SEARCHING by Pastor George

A pastor, at our sister church in Clinton, wrote a church editorial about “Change and the Unchangeable”. Bobb Barrick observed, “Technology and circumstances change but our basic needs as human beings remain the same.” I thought he was right on target. Even though we are sur-rounded by a swirl of changes, our basic needs are con-stant. There is not any gap between us and Bible times.

Christian leader, John R.W. Stott suggests that people are looking for three things: first, TRANSCENDENCE. People are looking for spiritual solutions and are willing to hear about God, faith and mystery. They may resist organized religion, but real spirituality is attractive. Stott says the sec-ond thing people are looking for is SIGNIFICANCE. Peo-ple want their lives to count. News programs feature folks who are “Making a difference.” People are hungry for meaning. The third desire is for COMMUNITY. We want a sense of belonging. Even in tough economic times, may folks give up high paying jobs in exchange for a better quality of life.

Regardless of our political opinions, family background, income level, age or education, we seek this trio of Tran-scendence, Significance and Community. We are hungry for a real relationship with God and with others. So are our neighbors, co-workers, friends and relatives. What Christ offers feeds us where we hunger and quenches our deep-est thirsts. We need to share our faith with humility, dili-gence, enthusiasm and clarity. People are already search-ing for what we have to offer.

Pastor George and Pastor Ron begin a four-week sermon series entitled “What If”. Don’t forget if you miss a message or want to revisit a message you heard, the weekly messages are uploaded to the St. John’s

website at: www.stjohnsumc-dav.com click on media.

PIECES OF GRACE I There are many things going on here at St. John’s all of the time. I sometimes struggle to keep up

with what is happening. I know that many who read this are shaking their head up and down as they read these words. As a pastor who has not been doing this for long, I struggle with how best to communicate with those that need to know what I have to offer.

There was time here at St John’s when the weekly bulletin and Tidings were the same. At some point they became separate. Now we have two services with no bulletins and a monthly Tidings. For me neither a newsletter nor a bulletin is effective for communicating. I send a devotional email every week that is only opened by about one quarter of the people who receive it. I have a web log that is only seen by a few people. We operate a video system and a web page for the church and still I have not been able to find the best way to communicate so people receive the knowledge that I have for them.

It seems that whatever solution I try I miss more people than I hit. Before I get too caught up in this I usually realize that I am not alone. The Hebrew Bible is filled with communication failures. The Good News is that despite all of our flaws and all of our short comings Jesus did come and did effectively bring his message of love. The bad news is that some people did not hear or learn what Jesus had for them. Until we are all perfected we will deal with shortcomings such as communication failure. All we can do until then is keep trying. Until next time…

Grace and Peace, RON

Ya'll come and help us kick off our fall events at Jesus Country on September 11th. We will celebrate with an outdoor service at 5:30 in the parking lot on the east side of the church. This is a fellowship night and instead of the usual pot-luck, we will have a meal prepared by St. John's United Methodist Women. It is a fund raiser to support Bidwell Riverside in Des Moines; one of the UMW's state projects. Bidwell Riverside takes in homeless women and chil-dren, has a child development center, and an emergency food pantry. They have been severely hit with flooding this spring and really need our help. So please come and join us for a spiritually enriching time followed by fun, food and fellowship.

INGATHERING by Wanda Cover

Our annual ingathering is in full swing! So far we have collected nearly 500 items for school kits and health kits, but we still need over 800 more items. We already have all the pencils, crayons, erasers, and bar soap that we need … thank you! We do still need all other items, es-pecially paper (8 ½ X 11 ruled pads or loose leaf), blunt tip scissors, and hand-held pencil sharpeners. Please continue to bring items and place them in the large bin near the welcome center (Perry Street Entrance). We will collect items through the end of September, then Boy Scout Troop 6 will assemble the kits. Thanks for your support!

FOOD PANTRY by Sharon Imming

School clothes are bought, supplies are in the backpacks and school has started. Now is the time to turn our thoughts to the hungry and less fortu-

nate. By St. John’s and God’s people helping each month with one item, we could have less and less people going hungry.

We didn’t make the goal of 500 items for July; but we did collect 433 items. August counts was 379. Food pantry needs: Jell-O, fruit cups, small can fruit, oatmeal pack-ets, small pancake mix, toothpaste, toothbrushes, micro-wave popcorn, and paper towels.

September 18th/19th is the next food pantry weekend. Let’s fill the baskets to overflowing. St. John’s you can do it and you will feel much better knowing you helped a family, child or individual.

BOY SCOUT NEWS by Wanda Cover

Wow … what a way to wrap up the summer, with the National Jamboree at Fort A P Hill, VA. Three scouts from Troop 6 attended, along with Scoutmaster Harold Cover. En route to Virginia, the Jamboree Contingent visited the battlefield at Gettysburg, PA, and saw many sights in Wash-

ington, DC. They experienced Sunday morning service at the National Cathedral, and attended a huge Methodist ser-vice at the Jamboree. Activities at Jamboree included climbing, rappelling (including a simulated rappel from a helicop-ter), and “Camp Thunder”, a new shotgun shooting activity with varied targets. Since shooting sports are Harold’s spe-cial interest, he was very excited about Camp Thunder. Because it was also the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts of America, there were many, many commemorative items given away. Closing ceremonies were spectacular, with a great talk by Mike Rowe of the TV show Dirty Jobs, skits, bands, and fireworks. Those of us who were left behind were happy to watch the closing via webcast … it was almost like being there! The weather was good, and it was a safe, fun trip. The participants are already talking about the next National Jamboree that will be held 3 years from now at the new and permanent location in West Virginia.

Our August campout was in Muscatine. Since the Cedar River was above flood stage we had to cancel our plans for canoeing, but we still had fun and a very relaxing campout.

Please remember our flag placement and Schnuck’s eScrip fund-raisers. Contact Luc Luckenbach or Harold Cover for more information. Thanks for your support and your prayers.
