NOV 12 Laura Byrne’s flute playing has been described as “effortless, powerful and engaging.” Highly regarded on both sides of the Atlantic, Laura is based in Baltimore, Maryland and is a two time recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council grant in solo performance. She has performed throughout North America and in Ireland. Her recordings include two solo albums, an acclaimed duo recording, “Forget Me Not “ (2014) with NY based fiddler Rose Flanagan; and “Crabs in the Skillet” (2011) with the Old Bay Ceili Band. Liz Carroll was born in Chicago of Irish parents. She’s a junior and senior All-Ireland Fiddle Champion; has toured as a solo artist and with the Greenfields of America, Trian, String Sisters; and as part of the duo Liz Carroll & John Doyle. She’s featured on eleven albums and has appeared on many more. Liz is a recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship Award (1994). In 2010 she became the first Irish-American musician nominated for a Grammy. In 2011 she became the first American-born composer honored with the Cumadóir TG4, Ireland’s most significant traditional music prize. Her new collaborative album is companion music to a recent exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago “Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690-1840 – The Music.” Marla Fibish A San Francisco native, Marla has become one of the prominent voices of the mandolin in Irish music. She is a dynamic performer and a sought after teacher. In addition to the mandolin, Marla plays mandola, tenor guitar, bouzouki and button accordion. She also sings and writes music, and is known for her musical settings of works from a variety of poets. Marla’s main musical endeavor is a collaboration with her husband, guitarist Bruce Victor, under the name Noctambule. Pauline Conneely was born in Bedford, England to Irish immigrants hailing from Connemara and County Longford. Her parents passed their love of Irish music on to Pauline and her brothers and sisters. They studied with Brendan Mulkere, originally from County Clare, who filled their house with music when he came to teach. Pauline came to America in 1988 as a dancer and musician with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and moved to Chicago in 1989. She is one of the finest Irish banjo players in America. She has shared the stage and has become close friends with most of the well-respected Irish artists performing on the world stage today. Known to have a wicked sense of humor, and a story always at the ready, Pauline is at her most comfortable when playing her beloved banjo with other Irish music lovers. Rose Conway Flanagan Traditional Irish Fiddler from Pearl River, New York. Her students have included several All-Ireland winners and medalists. She has been an instructor at the Alaskan Traditional Music Camp, Catskills Irish Arts Week, The Swannanoa Celtic Gathering, the O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat in the US, DeDanaan Camp in Vancouver, BC, and Scoile Eigse in Cavan, Ireland. Rose has taught workshops at the NE Tional, CCE conventions and at the Musical Heritage Center at the Fiddle & Pick. Rose and flutist, Laura Byrne, recently recorded “Forget Me Not, Traditional Irish Music On Fiddle And Flute.” John Walsh was born in the Bronx, NY – otherwise known as Ireland’s 33rd county. At the age of 10, his family moved to Kilkenny, Éire where he took up guitar and was lucky enough to be surrounded by a rich musical heritage and learned a variety of musical styles. John currently runs St. Canice’s Backyard, his recording studio, and performs with his band, Jameson’s Revenge. CONCERT THURS. NOV 10 MEET THE INSTRUCTORS! Manhattan Trans-fer, Lyle Lovett and she played for the Pope. She has toured with Celtic rock band, “Ceili Rain” and bluegrass band,

“Crucial Smith.” Gretchen has taught at many music camps over the years including Alaska Trad Music Camp, CO Roots Camp, Acoustic Music Camp and Mark O’Connor’s Fiddle Camp. In 2008, she founded the Musical Heritage Center, AKA the Fiddle & Pick, where she is an educator & direc-tor of events featuring traditional music workshops. She teaches private lessons & hosts inclusive multi-level jams. Her love for traditional music (Irish, Bluegrass, Appalachian Old-Time), inspired her to form her ensemble, “PLAIDGRASS.”

Suzi Fowley Perri & Ben Alexander Suzi has been playing drums of one sort or another

for over 30 yrs. She played in a bagpipe band 18 years then moved towards a more free form of drumming, teaching herself the bodhran and learning buttonbox accordian. Suzi’s dance background and love of rhythm enables her to teach folks how to make the Bodhran talk. Her sweetie, ‘Chef Benito’ is the cook in charge for this weekend. The couple recently moved from Alaska to the warmer climate of Gladwin, Michigan.

Andy Kruspe Hailing from Huntsville, AL, Andy is a bodhrán player who has

performed with several Celtic artists throughout the Southeast. He is also active as a clinician and teacher, and is the author of two books: The Bodhrán Primer and Playing the Tune. Find out more about him at www.andykruspebodhran.com.

Gretchen Priest-May grew up in South Bend Indiana. In 1995 she moved to Nashville, TN. She has per-formed on the Grand Ole Opry, and with artists including Kathy Mattea,

Total Beginner: no experience needed or those who play a wee bit; learn the basics here I Beginner: some proficiency with the instrument; can tune instrument; can pick up small phrases by ear; can play

up to a dozen tunes (in any style) II Intermediate: mastered basic skills; can tune instrument; can pick up phrases easily by ear; keep time; play the

principle scales & chords cleanly; know how to play tunes with confidence; basic ornamentation and familiarity with the Irish genre; understands and plays several jigs and reels

III Advanced: comfortable with instrument and able to focus on style, arrangement and left- and right-hand ornamentation and able to play many jigs and reels with confidence. Fiddlers should be experienced in bowing ornamentation, bowing rhythms and variations. Remember – being be an expert in another genre of music doesn’t necessarily mean you are ready for an advanced Irish class.

Tim May has toured with Patty Loveless, Eddie Rabbitt, & has been a regular on the Opry with Mike Snider’s OldTime String Band. He was voted Nashville

Reader’s Poll Best Instrumentalist in Nashville in 2012, and in the Top 3 in 2013. Tim played on Charlie Daniels’ 2005 track of ‘I’ll Fly Away’, a song nominated that year for Country Instrumental Grammy. Tim plays mandolin, mandola and mandocello on the recording “PLAIDGRASS” amongst many other recordings. He co-authored The Flatpicker’s Guide to Irish Music, The Flatpicker’s Guide to Old Time Music, The Mandolin Player’s Practical Guide to Scales and Arpeggios, the eight volume series Flatpicking Essentials, and is in demand as a roots music teacher.
