The Kansas Junior Livestock Show Board of Directors welcomes you to the 80th annuallivestock show and auction. We are excited that you have chosen to participate in theKJLS, one of the premier livestock shows in the region. The volunteer Board, show staffand other volunteers stand ready to provide you with a positive experience while youare at the show.

This show book contains the procedures and rules that are necessary to ensure a fair andpositive experience for all exhibitors. We encourage you to become familiar with the rulesand follow them. These rules will guide the actions and decisions of the administration,staff and judges during the duration of the show. If you have any suggestions for futurechanges to improve the show experience for our youth, please let us know.

We want you to have a good experience and enjoy yourself while at the show.Please conduct yourself in a manner that will reflect positively on your parents, leaders,community, and the show. MAJOR SHOW CHANGES FOR 2012Entry Deadline - August 15, 2012

Identification of Registered Ewes – A Tattoo WILL NOT be required.Goat and Lamb Exercising Area – Exhibitors of goats and lambs may use the areaimmediately north of Sam Fulco Pavilion for walking their animals.DNATesting – A DNA sample is required for all nominated livestock. Nose prints havebeen eliminated and ear notches for swine will not be required for the nomination process.Failed DNATests – If an animal fails a DNA verification test, the individual and/or fam-ily named in the declaration process will forfeit any premiums or awards for the animalin question and will be banned from current and future KJLS exhibition of any species.Pedigreed Breeding Gilt Show – The Kansas Junior Livestock Show will hold aPedigreed Breeding Gilt Show this year. For a complete set of rules, please refer toDepartment H.Commercial Doe Kid Show and Show Back – Each exhibitor may show two does.Showing of Goats – Goats must be shown with all four feet on the ground. Exhibitorsmay use a collar, a collar with a short lead, or a halter when showing. Medium/3mm orsmaller pinch collars will be allowed. Exhibitors may only briefly touch their animal withtheir hands to position legs or head. Using a leg or knee to encourage their goat to pushagainst them WILL NOT be allowed. (Interpretation – Goats can not be leg braced)Nomination Fee – Each nomination will cost $8.00 and makes an animal eligible for boththe KSF and KJLS. A nomination is not an entry for the show.2013 Show – Electronic ear tags will be required for nomination of all market animals.Skateboards & Scooters – Because of safety and liability concerns, skateboards andscooters will not be permitted on the grounds or in the three pavilions during the KansasJunior Livestock Show.Dogs in Show Barns – No dogs, except ADA service dogs will be allowed in the barnsduring the show.

1. Entry Deadline: Entries must be postmarked by August 15, 2012. Late entrieswill be accepted through September 1, 2012, but all late entries will be subjectto an entry fee of double the stated entry fee amount.

2. ADMINISTRATION OF RULES AND REGULATIONS: The Kansas JuniorLivestock Show Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and/or its RulesCommittee have the final and absolute right to interpret or amend the rules andregulations listed in this Show book. Any exhibitor who violates the followingrules will forfeit all privileges and premiums and will be subject to penaltiesordered by the KJLS Executive Committee.When necessary, special rules are published for each department. If there is aconflict between the special rules of any department and the general rules andregulations, the special rules will govern.Any complaint regarding eligibility or adherence to the rules must be made inwriting. $250 cash or a certified check must accompany a written protest form.The fee will be forfeited if the Protest Committee is not able to substantiate thecomplaint.

3. NON-TERMINAL SHOW: The Show will be non-terminal for all marketsteers, market goats and market lambs except those animals in the Auction ofChampions.All auction animals are terminal. Sifted lambs and goats may, at thediscretion of the exhibitor, be sold at base bid price or taken home. All marketswine unloaded at the grounds must be harvested.

4. EXHIBITOR ELIGIBILITY: The KJLS is open to any Kansas 4-H or FFAmember. The last year for participation in the KJLS for any 4-H or FFAmem-ber will be based on the calendar year an exhibitor turns nineteen (19). AllKansas 4-H members that have reached the age of seven before January 1st ofthe show year will be eligible to participate in the show.

5. PREMIUM AMOUNTS: Premiums will be paid to at least half the class, butwill not be paid past 10th place. Amounts will be based on a percentage of theentries per class. Kansas breed associations may offer additional premiums.

6. LIVESTOCK QUALITY: To maintain and improve the quality of livestock inthe Show, all animals will be inspected at the time of weigh-in and those notmeeting minimum health & quality standards will be sifted.

7. BREED CLASSIFICATION: The Classification Committee has the authority toscreen and classify animals. The decisions of the Classification Committee are final.

8. WITHDRAWAL TIMES FOR DRUGS, GROWTH PROMOTANTS, ANDOTHER APPROVED MATERIALS: Exhibitors, their parents, leaders, andinstructors have a serious responsibility to use animal health products, growthpromotants and any other approved materials with great care, only when need-ed and in correct amounts. Approved withdrawal times are set and must be fol-lowed to assure that meat customers receive wholesome food. A DrugWithdrawal Certificate is printed on the enclosed entry form. Market livestockwill not be allowed to show without a completed certificate signed by anexhibitor and parent or guardian. The withdrawal date for medications and legaldrugs will be the date of animal check-in.

9. BLOODANDURINE TESTS: The Executive Committee of the Kansas JuniorLivestock Show reserves the right to have a blood, urine, and/or tissue labora-tory analysis conducted on any animal entered in competition. If any analysisshows the presence of any amount of a diuretic, unapproved or illegal medica-tion, or a legal medication not meeting the withdrawal time as of the animalcheck-in date of the show, the exhibitor of the animal will forfeit all prizes andpremiums, and will be barred from future competition at the Kansas JuniorLivestock Show. The Kansas Junior Livestock Show shall be entitled to dis-qualify an exhibitor whose animal tests positive for any drug even if theexhibitor and the exhibitor’s parents or guardians are innocent of any wrong-doing and did not administer the drug. The Grand and Reserve GrandChampion of each species will be tested. All other entries are subject to testingat the discretion of the Board of Directors and management. All exhibitorsagree to submit any animal, breeding and/or market, entered by him/her toinspection by the Show’s veterinarian or their agent and agree to have the ani-mal submitted to tests as may be requested at any time. KJLS also reserves theright to have ultrasound, DNA, blood and/or urine laboratory analysis made onany animal entered for competition. The exhibitor, including his or her parentor guardian or FFAAdvisor or County Extension Agent, must be present dur-ing the collection for testing and must witness, seal and sign the sample; thusverifying the sample to be properly collected and prepared for analysis. Theanalysis of the testing laboratory shall be final and conclusive without recourseagainst KJLS or any officer, or employee thereof or any laboratory as approvedby the Executive Committee. The exhibitor waives any right of action whichhe/she might have for any action taken under this rule, and releases the KansasJunior Livestock Show and the laboratory from any and all claims or demandswhatsoever in connection with the inspection or testing of any such animal orruling or action taken by reason of the conclusion of such testing laboratory. Asbreeding animals are not entering the food chain, the USDAWholesome MeatAct does not apply; however, breeding animals will be closely screened for anyperformance enhancing compounds. This includes, but is not limited to, diuret-ics, steroids, anti-inflammatories, tranquilizers and painkillers.

10.APPROVED IDENTIFICATION AND NOMINATION DATES: Steers musthave been tagged on or before May 1, 2012. A completed nomination form andDNA envelope must be postmarked by May 1, 2012.

All registered heifers must be registered in the exhibitor’s name no later thanJune 15, 2012. Registration will be determined according to each breed associ-ation’s guidelines. Date of ownership is not necessarily the same as date of reg-istration. All heifers must be identified with a permanent tattoo correspondingwith registration papers. Original registration papers must accompany allbreeding heifers at check-in on Friday, September 21, 2012.All commercial breeding heifers must have been tagged on or before June 15,2012, and have been identified by official 4-H/FFA beef ear tag and legible tat-too. This is for heifers that are not eligible for registration with a breed associ-ation. A completed nomination form and DNA envelope must have been post-marked by June 15, 2012, in order to be eligible to show.Barrows must have been tagged on or before June 15, 2012, and have beenidentified by official 4-H/FFA ear tag number and breed. Purebred barrows earnotches must match those listed on registration certificate. Improperly or fresh-ly notched pigs will not be allowed to show. Pigs must be notched using theuniversal notching system recognized by the Purebred Swine Association. Acompleted nomination form and DNA envelope must be postmarked by June15, 2012.Pedigreed gilts must be in the name of the 4-H/FFA exhibitor or approved fam-ily nomination name on their registration certificate by June 15, 2012. Theymust also be tagged with an official 4-H/FFA ear tag by June 15, 2012.All market lambs must have been tagged on or before June 15, 2012. All com-mercial ewes must have been tagged on or before June 15, 2012. Market lambsand commercial ewes must be identified in the exhibitor's name by an official4-H/FFA ear tag number. For market lambs and commercial ewes to be eligi-ble for the show, a completed nomination form and DNA envelope must havebeen postmarked by June 15, 2012.All goats must be tagged on or before June 15, 2012, with an official 4-H/FFAear tag. A completed nomination form and a completed DNA envelope must bepostmarked by June 15, 2012.In all market species, each animal must be identified in a single exhibitor’sname and exhibitor’s number except if being nominated under a household (seerule 11). Each nomination will cost $8.00 and makes an animal eligible forboth the KSF and KJLS. Remember, nomination is not an entry for the show.

11.HOUSEHOLD NOMINATION/HOUSING AND CARE FORM: The house-hold nomination program is optional and intended for market animals only. Itis designed for exhibitors who legally reside in the same household and sharethe same legal address, while providing care for the project the majority of thetime of ownership. Youth may nominate as a household and will declare whowill show which animal when checking in. Once a form is on file, the house-hold nomination will remain in effect without annual renewal, unless addition-al exhibitors need to be added to a household.

The housing and care portion of the form is designed to certify that an exhibitoris providing primary care for their project the majority of the time and wherethat care is taking place. It is required for all nominated livestock. The form fea-tures two separate sections for youth who reside with their animal and thosewho do not. The KJLS reserves the right to inspect the premise to ensure ani-mals are housed as indicated.

12.EAR-TAG IDENTIFICATION: All market animals, commercial heifers, com-mercial ewes, commercial does must be properly identified with the Kansas 4-H ear tag with numbers identical to those submitted on the nomination form.Lost ear tags must be reported in writing by the agent or instructor to the nom-ination coordinator prior to the animal being brought to the Show.

13.ANIMALS PREVIOUSLY SOLD: Any animal previously sold at county orregional shows is NOT eligible for entry in this Show.

14.QUALIFYING WEIGHTS: To qualify for financial premiums, a market ani-mal's weight must fall within the following ranges: steers must weigh at least1,050 pounds, barrows must weigh between 230 - 290 pounds, lambs mustweigh 90 pounds or more, market goats must weigh 60 pounds or more, andcommercial doe kids must weigh 50 pounds or more.

15. SCALES: A set of “unofficial” scales will be made available to exhibitors ofswine, sheep, and market goats. No private scales will be allowed on the premises.

16.ENTRIES: Entries must be made on the 2012 official entry form found in thisshow book (photocopies are acceptable). All entries from ONE exhibitor are tobe made on one form, and only one exhibitor per form.All blanks must be prop-erly filled out with the correct department and division listed, and must beaccompanied by the correct entry fees. The Drug Withdrawal Certificate mustbe completed and signed for all market livestock. Entry of market animals byAugust 15, 2012, (September 1, 2012 for late entries) requires only the numberof animals to be shown. The specific tag number of the animals is not required.All market animals shown, however, must have been nominated. No addition-al entries will be allowed after the entry due date.

17.ENTRYFEES: The entry fee for steers is $35 per animal. The entry fee for mar-ket lambs, breeding ewes, commercial ewes, market goats, commercial doekids, barrows, gilts, and heifers is $15 per animal. Showmanship entry fees are$5 per division. Entry fees for entries postmarked after August 15, 2012,through September 1, 2012 will be $70 for steers, $30 for market lambs, breed-ing ewes, commercial ewes, market goats, commercial doe kids, barrows, gilts,& heifers and $10 for Showmanship.

18.CHECKS AND MONEY ORDERS: All checks and money orders sent to theShow as entry fees shall be made payable to: KANSAS JUNIOR LIVESTOCKSHOW.

19.NUMBEROFANIMALSTHATCANBE SHOWNBYAN EXHIBITOR:Anexhibitor may show a maximum of two (2) animals per project per species.

Example: Two steers, two heifers, two market lambs, two ewes, two marketgoats, two commercial doe kids, two market barrows. Due to space restrictions,only one gilt can be shown. This is a maximum of 4 beef, 4 sheep, 4 goats, and3 swine. Market animals brought to the Show must have been nominated andpre-entered. By paying a $8 per animal nomination fee, exhibitors are allowedto nominate more than two animals per species. The nominations must be post-marked by May 1, 2012, for steers and June 15, 2012, for barrows, gilts, lambs,market goats, commercial doe kids, commercial heifers, and commercial ewes.At the time of check-in, the exhibitor must determine which two animals willbe shown. Breeding animals brought to the Show must have been pre-entered.

20.ARRIVAL TIME AND DEADLINE FOR THE SHOW: No animals will bereceived at the Show prior to 10 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012. All sheepmust be checked in and weighed by 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, 2012.Market goats must be checked in and weighed by 2:30 p.m., Friday, September21, 2012.

21.Cattle and swine must be checked in by 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, 2012.NO ENTRIES WILL BEACCEPTEDAFTER CHECK-IN DEADLINES.

22.EMERGENCIES WHICH MAYAFFECTARRIVAL TIME AT THE SHOW:In the event of an emergency which could make entries late, the exhibitor (orparent, teacher, leader, agent) must call the Show Coordinator at 316-258-5753and get clearance for a late check-in.

23.BREED SIZE: Ten (10) head of any breed shall constitute a division. However,the Superintendent has the discretion to allow a division of less than 10 head ofa breed. Any breed with less than the number to constitute a breed division asdetermined by the superintendent will be shown in theAll Other Breeds (AOB)division. If there are less than ten (10) head in the AOB division, the superin-tendent will decide whether to show the animals as an AOB division or enterthem in the Crossbred division.

24.OWNERSHIP OF BREEDING LIVESTOCK: Breeding livestock may haveregistration papers in the name of two or more 4-H or FFAmembers in the samefamily. Please list only one name per animal on Show entry form. However,such livestock CANNOT be CO-registered in the name of an exhibitor and anadult, or in the name of an exhibitor and any flock, herd, farm or ranch.

25.EXHIBITOR CONDUCT: When animals are unloaded, control of animalspasses to the Kansas Junior Livestock Show and exhibitors will abide by Showrules. Exhibitors who do not follow the rules and policies will forfeit all awardsand premiums. Depending on the severity of the infraction, the ExecutiveCommittee may bar the exhibitor and members of his or her immediate familyfrom future Shows. An exhibitor shall not remove his or her animal from theshow ring prior to completion of judging of any class without consent of thesuperintendent.

26.GROOMING: Each exhibitor must groom his or her own animal and may useonly the assistance of an immediate family member (mother, father, legal

guardian, brother or sister) or of another 4-H or FFA member who is anexhibitor at the 2012 Show. This rule will be strictly enforced and any exhibitorviolating it will have their animal in question eliminated from competition.Anyone wishing to report unauthorized people grooming animals must sign acomplaint form at the Show Office (Sam Fulco Pavilion) that includes name ofthe owner, animal tag number, time and date of the observation. A committeeappointed by the Board will take action.Sheep/Goat Divisions: All market lambs, commercial ewes and goats must be“slick shorn”, above the knee and hock joints including the head, before arrivalon the show grounds. Amaximum of 0.2 (two tenths) inch of wool is permittedon market lambs and commercial ewes. A maximum of 0.4 (four tenths) inchof hair is permitted on market goats. Hair on the tail switch may be left on goats.There will be no shearing of market lambs, commercial ewes or goats allowedon any part of the grounds after arrival. Anyone found in violation will have hisor her electric clippers temporarily confiscated and that animal will be disqual-ified. Touch-up clipping with scissors or hand shears will be allowed. No arti-ficial coloring/use of adhesives is allowed on market lambs and commercialewes.No blocking tables or blow dryers are permitted on the grounds in thesheep/goat division.

27.EXHIBITOR T-SHIRTS AND BADGES: Each exhibitor will be provided anofficial Kansas Junior Livestock Show T-shirt and name badge. The badge is tobe worn by the exhibitor at all times while at the Show. The T-shirt is to be wornby the exhibitor when in the show ring.

28.SHOWINGOFANIMALS: Exhibitors must accompany their animals, care forthem and be present to exhibit their entries. If an exhibitor has two animals inthe same class or is involved in another KJLS function at the same time, he orshe, WITH THE PRIOR APPROVAL OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, mayhave another exhibitor assist by showing that animal. Exhibitors are responsi-ble for controlling their own animal(s) from the time they arrive on the groundsuntil the animal is loaded on a truck for the packer or taken home. No assistancemay be given to any exhibitor in the show ring except by authorized ring men.

29.HERDSMANSHIP: Exhibitors are expected to keep their exhibit area neat,clean, and dry. This includes individual stalls as well as the aisles.

30.PAYMENT FOR ANIMALS SOLD: Checks in payment for animals sold willbe mailed to the exhibitor approximately three to four weeks after the Show.Payment for animals on which drug tests are conducted may not be made foreight to ten weeks after the Show.

31.SPREADING EXHIBITOR LOSS: So that any exhibitor may not suffer exces-sive loss as a result of an animal being condemned because of an injury or acci-dent, the management reserves the right to spread this loss over all animals sold.A fund will be created to take care of such losses by deducting an amount notto exceed 2 percent (2%) of the sale price of each animal. This regulation does

not apply to any animal which has been disqualified as a result of unethicalpractices. The basis of settlement with the exhibitor of an animal condemnedbecause of injury or accident will be seventy-five percent (75%) of the floorprice per pound for all animals of the same species.

32.NO PREMIUM PAID ON CONDEMNED CARCASS: The ExecutiveCommittee (for the Show or as an agent for any donor of premiums or prizes)will allow NO PREMIUM TO BE PAID to any exhibitor of a market animalwhose carcass is condemned by an official inspector because of any unethicalpractice such as giving by mouth or injection of any prohibited medication orthe physical alteration of such carcass. Further, any exhibitor whose animal'scarcass has been condemned for any reason listed in this Show book will bebarred from future Kansas Junior Livestock Shows. The KJLS reserves theright to condemn and/or disqualify any animal, or carcass, found violating theuse of drugs, chemicals or feed additives. The exhibitor will forfeit all auctionproceeds and receive no money from the condemned carcass. The class placingwill not change.An exhibitor of an animal testing positive for any drug or med-ication or unapproved chemical will forfeit all rights and privileges to exhibitin future shows.

33.OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS AT SHOW: Sometimes it is necessary tomake a change in the Show which involves a rule change. In such cases, offi-cial announcements will be made. These announcements take precedence overwritten policy or procedures.

34.RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE: All entries are accepted with the under-standing that neither show management nor any officer, person or organizationshall be held responsible for any damage or loss that may arise.

35.HANDLING OFANIMALS: All animals will be handled in a humane mannerin accordance with accepted animal husbandry practices.Drenching is only permitted in your pen.Soft muzzles are only permitted in sheep and goat pens. Muzzles must beremoved from sheep and goats anytime they are taken from their pen.Goats must be shown with all four feet on the ground. Exhibitors may use a col-lar, a collar with a short lead, or a halter when showing. Medium (3mm) orsmaller pinch collars will be allowed. Exhibitors may only briefly touch theiranimal with their hands to position legs or head. Using a leg or knee to encour-age their goat to push against then WILL Not be allowed. (Interpretation –Goats can not be leg braced)

36.USE OF ANIMALS IN JUDGING CONTEST: Any livestock entered in theShow may be used in the Mid America Classic Livestock Judging Contest. IfExhibitor refuses, all premiums will be forfeited.

37.TRUCKAND TRAILER PARKING: The majority of trucks and trailers are tobe parked northeast of Sam Fulco Pavilion. Some vehicles will be parked in lotssouth of Sam Fulco Pavilion. Any vehicles or trailers parked in fire lanes willbe towed at owner’s expense.

38.FANS: No fans will be permitted in the aisles and alleys.39.FUTURITYANIMALS: Futurity calves purchased by out-of-state buyers dur-

ing the KJLS may not return to the Show and compete for futurity money.40.Skateboards and scooters are not permitted on the grounds or in the pavilions

at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show.41.Dogs in Show Barns – No dogs, except ADA service dogs, are allowed in the

show barns during the show.SALE POLICIES

1. SWINE:All barrows unloaded will be harvested. Sifted barrows will be sold ona grade and yield basis. NO BARROWS MAY BE TAKEN HOME.

2. SIFTEDANIMALS: Sifted lambs and goats may, at the option of the exhibitor,be sold at the base bid or taken home.

3. AUCTION ANIMALS: The top 2 steers, barrows, market lambs and marketgoats chosen from the Champion and Reserve Champion of each breed orcrossbreds, will be sold in theAuction of Champions. However, each exhibitoris limited to one (1) animal per species in the Auction of Champions. If anexhibitor has two animals in the top two of a species, the higher placing animalwill qualify for the sale. The third place animal will then qualify for the sale.Auction of Champion animals cannot be decorated. They are to be exhibited inthe sale ring as they were shown in the show ring.

4. ORDER OFAUCTION: Steers, Market Goats, Barrows, and Lambs5. ALL AUCTION ANIMALS ARE TERMINAL: Animals purchased for busi-

ness or home use will be harvested at designated processors located in theWichita area. ABSOLUTELY NO ANIMALS MAY BE TAKEN HOMEFROM THEAUCTION SALE.

6. SELLING WEIGHTS: The selling weights shall be the official set of “weigh-in” weights.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

General

1. All animals that are required to have a health certificate must be identified by eartattoo, metal ear tag or registration number.

2. Animals with active lesions, ringworm or multiple warts will not be permitted toshow.

3. Market steers, lambs, barrows, breeding ewes, and market goats do not need ahealth certificate.

Cattle: An official health certificate issued within (30) days of the exhibit mustaccompany all heifers.A negative brucellosis test is not required for heifers.

Swine: Health certificates are not required.Sheep and Goats: Health certificates are not required.

MARKET STEER RULES

1. Bedding will be provided for all beef exhibits.

2. All blocking chutes will be placed in the area provided and assigned by theSuperintendent.

3. Age limits for show steers will be based only on the development of the teeth. Allsteer entries must have two first temporary incisor teeth (baby teeth) and no visiblepermanent teeth. Any evidence of tampering with tooth development will be causefor the exhibitor to forfeit any premiums or prizes, and be barred from future partic-ipation at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show. The Superintendent reserves the rightto mouth any steer.

4. Steer classes will be divided according to breed and weight, depending on the num-ber of entries.

5. At time of weigh-in, steers will be breed classified by state breed representatives. Alldecisions of the classifiers are final. Steers failing to meet breed standards will beshown in the “Crossbred” division.

6. The Steer Show is a “no fit” show. “No Fit”, at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show,is defined as using no adhesive, glue, paint or powder products.

7. Nose prints are not required; however a completed nomination form and DNA enve-lope must have been postmarked by May 1, 2012.

8. Minimum weight for steers is 1,050 pounds.

9. Steer weigh-in will be held Saturday, September 22, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. in theOutdoor Arena.

10. All exhibitors of market steers must give their intent to either sell at the base bid ortake their animals home. This intent must be given at weigh-in. No change will beallowed after that time.

11. Steers must have registration papers at the show or they will show in the crossbredclass. All papers and tattoos will be checked at the show. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Premiums will be paid to at least half the class, but will not be paid past 10th place.Amounts will be based on a percentage of the entries per class. Kansas BreedAssociationsmay award additional premiums.

DIVISION 11 - ANGUS STEERS

Special Angus Steer Rules:

1. To be eligible to show, steers in the Angus Division must have official registrationpapers and corresponding tattoo.

2. Steers must show typical Angus type as determined by the Classification Committee.

3. The decision of the Classification Committee is final.

4. The show reserves the right to blood type any steer.

DIVISION 12 - HEREFORD STEERS

The Kansas Hereford Association will provide an additional $50 in premiums for theHereford steer class.

Special Hereford Steer Rules:

1. Entries are open to Hereford steers sired by a registered Hereford bull and whosedam is registered with the AHA or is a purebred commercial Hereford. Steers do notneed to be registered but a steer certificate is required to show as indicated below:

* Hereford steers must have a steer certificate issued by the American HerefordAssociation. An application may be obtained by writing to the American HerefordAssociation Youth Department.

2. Steers must show characteristics typical of straight-bred Hereford cattle. All steerswill be subject to inspection by a KHAcommittee and are required to meet minimumstandards for type, quality and conformation. The committee will check tattoos tosee that they correspond to the record of certification and will have the final author-ity to determine eligibility of steers for the Hereford show. Ineligible steers will bechanged to the “Crossbred” division.

DIVISION 13 - SHORTHORN STEERS

Shorthorn steers must be 15/16 Shorthorn and have a Kansas Shorthorn Association ver-ification form or American Shorthorn Association purebred registration certificate.

A special class of Shorthorn steers, which were purchased in the 2011 futurity sale, willbe shown. The Kansas Shorthorn Association will make awards to the exhibitors of thehighest placing futurity steers as follows: 1st-$1,000; 2nd-$400; 3rd-$300; 4th-$200, 5th-$100. The Shorthorn futurity steer show back will be held following the heifer show backon Saturday afternoon. One half of the money will be awarded in cash and half in a cer-tificate, dated for two years, and to be used for the KJLA Shorthorn Futurity Sale.

DIVISION 14 - LIMOUSIN STEERS

The Kansas Limousin Breeders Association will provide an additional $100 in premiumfor the Limousin Steer class. Each Kansas Junior Limousin Association member whoexhibits a steer will receive $20 from the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association. Limitone payment per individual.Limousin steers must be 50% or higher, sired by a registered Limousin bull or out of aregistered purebred Limousin cow. Steers need not be registered, but exhibitors must pro-vide a completed KLBA steer certificate obtained from the breeder, by contacting Karen

BREEDING HEIFER RULES

1. The Heifer Show is a “no fit” show. “No Fit”, at the Kansas Junior Livestock Showis defined as using no adhesive, glue, paint or powder products.

2. All heifers must be accompanied by an official health certificate issued within thirty(30) days of exhibit. A negative brucellosis test is not required for heifers.

3. All heifers must be registered in the exhibitor's name no later than June 15, 2012.Registration will be determined according to each breed association’s guidelines.Date of ownership is not necessarily the same as date of registration. All heifers mustbe identified with a permanent tattoo corresponding with registration papers.Original registration papers must accompany all breeding heifers at check-in onFriday.

4. ALL HEIFERS must be born after January 1, 2011, and no later than December 31,2011. Individual classes will be divided into as nearly equal numbers according toage after all exhibits have been checked into the Show office. Aminimum of 10 headis required per breed.

5. All commercial breeding heifers must be nominated by June 15, 2012. This appliesto heifers that are not eligible for registration in a breed association.

6. Additional premiums will be paid to heifer exhibitors by Kansas Breed Associations.

7. All breeding heifers will be released immediately following the last Heifer Showclass.

8. The Classification Committee has the authority to screen and classify animals. Thedecisions of the Classification Committee are final.

DIVISION 31 - ANGUS HEIFERS

The Kansas Angus Association will offer $750 in additional premiums in the AngusHeifer classes.

Registration Certificates are required for all purebred barrows when the animalsare weighed in and the papers are checked at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show.Registration certificates will not be accepted for purebred barrows if the certificateis still in the breeders name and the exhibitor’s name is simply written or typed inthe “transfer to ______” category on the certificate. Breed associations reserve theright to pull certificates of animals without proper breed characteristics.

d. Purebred barrows must be nominated on the official 4-H/FFA nomination form bythe June 15 nomination deadline.

e. The registration certificate must be transferred to the name of the 4-H/FFA mem-ber or approved Kansas 4-H/FFA family nomination name by June 15.

f. A representative of the National Swine Registry, Team Purebred and/or appropri-ate Breed Association will be on hand to assist with registration certificate verifi-cation and breed classification. They will also pull DNA samples on BreedChampions and Reserve Champions as well as the Grand and Reserve GrandChampion over all (if from a purebred division) to test for the stress gene, verifyparentage and to ensure breed purity.

g. All Duroc, Chester White, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire barrows are to theguaranteed negative of the stress gene to exhibit at the Kansas Junior LivestockShow. Berkshire barrows must be listed as stress negative on the pedigree or test-ed as stress negative to exhibit at the KJLS.

h. If an exhibitor questions whether or not their purebred barrow is stress negative, astress test can be completed at the exhibitor’s expense prior to the show to ensurethat the barrow is indeed stress negative. If the purebred barrow fails the stresstest, it can be moved to the crossbred division at weigh-in time at the show.

i. A barrow enrolled in a particular breed may be changed to the crossbred divisionbefore the end of weigh-in at the KJLS. A barrow originally nominated in thecrossbred division will not be allowed to switch to a purebred classification afterthe June 15 nomination deadline.

j. Purebred barrows must meet all registration eligibility requirements of their respec-tive breed associations. NSR and Team Purebred field staff or qualified representa-tives will inspect all purebred market barrows and pedigrees for breed eligibility.

k. Any purebred barrow that fails the DNA tests for the stress gene, parentage veri-fication or breed purity will forfeit all premiums and awards. Showmanship stand-ings, however, will not be affected by failed test results. If premiums and awardsare not returned, the exhibitor will not be allowed to compete in future KansasJunior Livestock Shows.

2. All market barrows (entered and/or sifted) will be harvested.3. When exhibitors arrive on Friday, tag numbers are to be turned in at the swine check-

in area.4. Weighing and sifting will begin at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, September 22 in Sam Fulco

Pavilion. Minimum weight of barrows will be 230 pounds; maximum weight will be290 pounds, with a 3-pound variance at weigh-in time.

5. Barrows failing to make the minimum weight limit of 230 pounds and barrowsexceeding the weight limit of 290 pounds will be shown as super lightweight or superheavyweight animals. These animals will not be eligible to be shown as champions.Hogs weighing below 230 pounds and over 290 pounds are subject to severe pricediscounts.

7. All barrows must be identified by an official 4-H/FFA ear tag number and breed.Purebred barrow ear notches must match those on their registration certificate.Improperly or freshly notched pigs will not be allowed to show. Pigs should be earnotched using the universal notching system recognized by the purebred swine asso-ciations.

8. A qualified veterinarian will also sift out late cuts or other quality defects. All deci-sions of the committee are final.

9. Shavings will be provided for bedding of barrows on a ONE-TIME basis.10. Oil, powder or other treatment, which may interfere with packer dressing of car-

casses, are not permitted.11. Sam Fulco Pavilion (Swine Barn) will be closed from 12:00 midnight - 5:00 a.m. on

Friday and Saturday nights. The barn will be off-limits to all individuals with theexception of show officials.

12. The first and second place animals of each class will be subject to a 12 pound weighback. Any animal not making the 12 pound weigh back (either light or heavy) willbe placed at the bottom of the class.

13. Barrows will not be permitted to leave the building for any purpose following check-in on Friday. Failure to comply will result in a disqualification from the Show.

GILT RULES

1. Entries must be registered Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire, Landrace, Berkshire,Chester White, Poland or Spot Gilts that are farrowed on or after January 1, 2012.Due to space limitation, each exhibitor will be limited to enter and exhibit 1 (one)pedigreed breeding gilt.

2. Pedigreed gilts must meet all registration eligibility guidelines for their respectivebreed associations. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to be familiar with these guide-lines.

3. Entries must be owned by 4-H/FFAmembers and registration certificates must be inthe exhibitor’s name or approved family nomination name by June 15 and will notbe accepted if the certificate is still in the breeders name and the exhibitor’s name issimply written or typed in the “transfer to _______” category on the certificate.Note: A faxed copy of registration certificates will only be accepted if it is faxeddirectly to the Kansas Junior Livestock Show from a national breed associationoffice.

4. Pedigreed gilts must have an official 4-H/FFA tag by June 15 nomination deadline.5. A representative of the national Swine Registry, Team Purebred and/or appropriate

breed association representative will be on hand to assist with registration certificateverification and breed classification. Breed associations reserve the right to pull cer-tificates of animals without proper breed characteristics. If a certificate is pulled, thatgilt will not be allowed to show.

6. All breed champions, reserve champions, and/or randomly selected gilts may beDNA blood tested by breed association representatives for presence of the stressgene, parentage verification and breed purity based on their respective breed guide-lines. Any gilt that fails these DNA tests will forfeit all gilt show premiums andawards. Any premiums/cash awards due will not be awarded until all test results areverified by breed association offices.

7. This show is non-terminal for pedigreed breeding gilts and no floor price will be pro-vided for the gilts. All exhibitors are asked to remove their gilts from the barn no laterthan 3:00 p.m. on Sunday so barrows can be loaded out.

8. Breed classes will be offered as follows and will be broken by age if numbers war-rant it. A Champion and Reserve Champion will be selected for each breed. MARKET LAMB RULES

1. Only wether lambs are eligible to show in the market lamb show.2. Weighing, sifting and breed classification of market lambs will begin at 4:00 p.m.

and end at 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, in Sam Fulco Pavilion.3. Sam Fulco Pavilion (Sheep Barn) will be closed from 12:00 midnight - 5:00 a.m. on

Friday and Saturday night. The barn will be off-limits to all individuals with theexception of show officials.

4. Market lambs must:a. Weigh at least 90 poundsb. Have lamb teeth in placec. Be free from testicle and castration scar tissue

5. All market lambs and commercial ewes must be "slick shorn," above the knee andhock joints, including the head, before arrival on the grounds. A maximum of 0.2(two tenths) inch of wool is permitted.

6. There will be no shearing of market lambs or commercial ewes allowed on any partof the grounds after arrival. Anyone found in violation will have his or her electricclippers temporarily confiscated and that animal will be disqualified. Touch-up clip-ping with scissors or hand shears will be allowed. No artificial coloring or use ofadhesives is allowed on market lambs.

7. No blocking tables or blow dryers are permitted on the grounds in the sheep/goatdivision.

The 2011 Grand Champion Market Lamb was shown by Curtis Hewlett, Independence.The 153 pound Crossbred was purchased by Southwestern Remodeling,

8. Soft muzzles are permitted in your livestock pen only. Muzzles must be removedfrom an animal any time they are taken from their pen. Drenching is only permittedin your pen.

9. All market lambs must have an official 4-H ear tag number in the exhibitor's nameand completed a nomination form with a DNA envelope.

10. Breed Classification - During check-in, all market lambs will be classified by breedinto the proper Division, regardless of the breed designation on nose print cards. Thedecision of the Classifier is final.

11. One bag of wood shavings or chips will be provided for each pen. Additional bagsare available. Following the Saturday Sheep Show, any animal that is held over mustbe stalled in pens with natural bedding. (NO MATS)

12. Communicable Disease/Club Lamb Fungus - Sheep will be visually inspected by aShow veterinarian for sore mouth, infectious skin lesions (ringworm) and generalhealth. This will be done as you check your sheep in starting at 4:00 p.m. until 7:00p.m. on Friday, September 21. (All blankets must be completely removed from allsheep. Any lamb found to be infected with active fungal lesions or other health prob-lems must be removed from the building. Any sheep may be required to undergo asecond health inspection at the Superintendent’s request.

13. All exhibitors of market lambs must give their intent to either sell at the base bid ortake their lamb home. This intent must be given at weigh-in.

14. Once lambs have been checked in, they may be tied for drying purposes to outsiderings attached to Sam Fulco Pavilion. The area immediately north of Sam FulcoPavilion and the street can also be used as an area for walking lambs. Lambs are notpermitted to leave this designated exercise area. Failure to comply will result in dis-qualification from the Show.

15. Showing and Handling of Sheep - An exhibitor and a lamb may be disqualified fromthe Show for using showmanship techniques which are deemed excessive or areinhumane treatment of an animal. This shall include but is not limited to the liftingof the front legs from the ground by pulling the animal from the head and neck.Disqualification applies to the animal being shown at the time of infraction and alsodisqualification will be administered by the Superintendent or the Superintendent'sdesignate but can be initiated by the Show judge. During the judge’s inspection orhandling, all four feet of the animal are expected to be in contact with the ground.

16. Each exhibitor is responsible to check in his/her base bid lamb(s) at the gathering penbeginning at 4 p.m. Saturday. Lambs will be accepted until the completion of theSheep Showmanship Contest.

MARKET GOAT RULES

1. Weight: All goats must weigh a minimum of 60 pounds and can be any breed or com-bination of goat breeds. No maximum weight.

2. Identification: All market goats must be tagged on or before June 15, 2012 with an offi-cial 4-H/FFA tag.Acompleted nomination form and DNAenvelope must be postmarkedby June 15, 2012.

3. Goats must be shown with all four feet on the ground. Exhibitors may use a collar, acollar with a short lead, or a halter when showing. Medium/3mm or smaller pinch col-lars will be allowed. Exhibitors can only briefly touch their animal with their hands toposition legs or head. Using a leg or knee to encourage a market goat to push against anexhibitor WILL NOT be allowed. (Interpretation – goats cannot be leg braced).

4. Teeth: All goats must have baby teeth in place with no visible signs of permanent teeth.The decision of the mouther is final.

5. Shearing: All goats must be “slick shorn” with an equal amount of hair above the kneeand hock before arrival on the grounds. A maximum of 0.4 (four tenths) inch of hair ispermitted. Hair on the tail switch is permitted.

Shearing is not allowed on any part of the grounds after arrival. Anyone found in vio-lation will have his or her electric clippers temporarily confiscated and that animal willbe disqualified. Touch-up clipping with scissors or hand shears will be allowed.

6. No blocking tables or blow dryers are permitted on the grounds in the sheep/goat division.

7. Horns: Wethers are suggested to be dehorned. However, if horns are left, they should betipped and rounded.

8. Grooming: Artificial coloring, paint, adhesive, or powder will not be permitted for useon wethers during the entire show.

9. Only wethers are allowed to show in the Market Goat Show. Any animal exhibitingcryptorchid characteristics (testicle and/or castration scar tissue) will be disqualified.

COMMERCIAL DOE KID RULES

1. All doe kids must be tagged on or before June 15, 2012, with an official 4-H/FFA tag.A completed nomination form must be postmarked by June 15, 2012.

2. All doe kids must have baby teeth in place with no visible signs of permanent teeth. Thedecision of the mouther is final.

3. Shearing: All goats must be “slick shorn” with an equal amount of hair above the kneeand hock before arrival on the grounds. A maximum of 0.4 (four tenths) inch of hair ispermitted. Hair on the tail switch is permitted.

4. No registration papers are required.

5. The doe classes will be split by weight as necessary. All commercial doe kids mustweigh a minimum of 50 pounds. All breeds and crossbreds are combined.

6. Commercial doe kid’s horns should be tipped.

7. All does must be identified with an official USDA premise Scrapie ID tag. Inspectionwill take place at the Health Check Station.

Please refer to Rules 1 – 15 in the Market Goat Show for any rules not addressed in theabove 7 rules.

PREMIUMS FOR COMMERCIAL DOESPremiums will be paid to at least half the class, but will not be paid past 10th place.Amounts will be based on a percentage of the entries per class.

DEPARTMENT J - SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST

Each species will be divided into a Junior (13 & under) and Senior (14 and over)division, according to the exhibitor’s age on January 1, 2012. For specific ques-tions, contact the appropriate Superintendent.

1. The Contest is open to any KJLS exhibitor. Any exhibitor may enter the con-test by paying a $5 entry fee per division. The showmanship contests will beheld immediately following the selection of each Grand Champion marketanimal. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to be on time for the show-manship contest. Each participant must exhibit his or her own animal.

2. Late Entries: Late entries for showmanship will be accepted throughSeptember 1 but will be subject to a $10 Entry Fee per division. There will beno entries accepted on site.

3. Classes: Classes will be a random sort within the age divisions. Exhibitors arerequired to show in their assigned heat.

4. Animals used in Showmanship: The animal that a youth may use for show-manship must be shown in the show.

5. Premiums: No premiums will be distributed to the exhibitors in showmanshipclasses. The KJLS will award one ribbon to the top 5 exhibitors in each agedivision. Showmanship entry fees will be utilized to cover the costs associ-ated with providing a showmanship opportunity for all exhibitors.

6. Selection of Winners: The judge will have the right to select as many or fewyouth as they would like from each class to participate in the finals of the agedivision of showmanship for the species. Only the top five youth competingin the finals for their age division will be ranked 1 – 5.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st - 5th places for each species in each age division.

NATIONAL CODE OF SHOW RING ETHICS

The Kansas Junior Livestock Show is a member of the International Associationof Fairs and Expositions and abides by their National Code of Show Ring Ethics.

Exhibitors of animals at livestock shows shall at all times deport themselves withhonesty and good sportsmanship. Their conduct in this competitive environmentshall always reflect the highest standards of honor and dignity to promote theadvancement of agricultural education. This code applies to all exhibitors whocompete at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show.

All youth leaders working with exhibitors are under an affirmative responsibili-ty to do more than avoid improper conduct or questionable acts. Their moral val-ues must be so certain and positive that those younger and more pliable will beinfluenced by their fine example. Exhibitors who violate the code of ethics willforfeit premiums and awards and shall be prohibited from future exhibition.

The following is a list of guidelines for all exhibitors and all livestock in com-petitive events:1. All exhibitors must be present, upon request of fair and livestock show offi-

cials, proof of ownership, length of ownership and age of all animalsentered. Misrepresentation of ownership, age, or any facts relating thereto isprohibited.

2. Exhibitors shall provide animal health certificates from licensed veterinari-ans upon request by fair or livestock show officials.

3. Exhibitors are expected to care for and groom their animals.

4. Animals shall be presented where they will enter the food chain free ofviolative drug residues. The act of entering an animal is the giving of con-sent by the exhibitor for show management to obtain any specimens of urine,saliva, blood, or other substances from the animal to be used in testing.Animals not entered in an event, which culminates with the animal enteringthe food chain shall not be administered drugs other than in accordance withapplicable federal, state and provincial statutes, regulations and rules.Livestock shall not be exhibited if the drugs administered in accordance withfederal, state and provincial statutes, regulations and rules affect the animal’sperformance or appearance at the event.

If the laboratory reports on the analysis of saliva, urine, blood, or othersample taken from livestock indicates the presence of forbidden drugs ormedication, this shall be prima facie evidence such substance has beenadministered to the animal either internally or externally. It is presumedthat the sample of urine, saliva, blood, or other substance tested by thelaboratory to which it is sent is the one taken from the animal in question,its integrity is preserved and all procedures of said collection and preser-vation, transfer of the laboratory and analysis of the sample are correctand accurate and the report received from the laboratory pertains to thesample taken from the animal in question and correctly reflects the con-dition of the animal at the time the sample was taken, with the burden onthe owner, exhibitor, or absolutely responsible person to prove otherwise.

At any time after an animal arrives at the event, all treatments involvingthe use of drugs and/or medications for the sole purpose of protecting thehealth of the animal shall be administered by a licensed veterinarian.

5. Any surgical procedure or injection of any foreign substance or drug or theexternal application of any substance (irritant, counterirritant, or similarsubstance) which could affect the animal’s performance or alter its naturalcontour, confirmation, or appearance, except external applications of sub-stances of the hoofs or horns of animals which affect appearance only andexcept for surgical procedures performed by a duly licensed veterinarian forthe sole purpose of protecting the health of the animal, is prohibited.

6. The use of showing and/or handling practices or devices such as strikinganimals to cause swelling, using electrical contrivance, or other similarpractices are not acceptable and are prohibited.

7. Direct criticism or interference with the judge, fair or livestock show man-agement, other exhibitors, breed representatives, or show officials before,during, or after the competitive event is prohibited. In the furtherance oftheir official duty, all judges, fair and livestock show management, or othershow officials shall be treated with courtesy, cooperation and respect and noperson shall direct abusive or threatening conduct toward them.

8. No exhibitor shall conspire with another person or persons to intentionallyviolate this code of ethics or knowingly contribute or cooperate with anoth-er person or persons either by affirmative action or inaction to violate thiscode of ethics. Violation of this rule shall subject such individual to disci-plinary action.

9. The application of this code of ethics provides for absolute responsibility foran animal’s condition by the exhibitor whether or not he or she was actual-ly instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal incontravention of this code of ethics.

10. The act of entering an animal is the giving of consent by the exhibitor to havedisciplinary action taken by the show committee without recourse against theshow committee. The act of entering an animal is the giving of consent thatany proceedings or disciplinary action taken by the show committee may bepublished with the name of the violators in any publication of theInternational Association of Fairs and Expositions, including Fair andExpositions and any special notices to members.

11. The act of entering of an animal is the giving of verification by the exhibitorthat he or she has read the Code of Show Ring Ethics and understands theconsequences of and penalties provided for actions by the code. It is furthera consent that any action that contravenes these rules and is also in violationof federal, state, or provincial statutes, regulations, or rules may be releasedto appropriate law enforcement authorities with jurisdiction over suchinfractions.
