Handouts:

3"x3" Handouts - There are 6 to a page. These little handouts can be used in numerous ways. They are the perfect size for the girls to use on their bulletin boards at home, taped in their locker at school, they can be collected throughout the year and made into a little book by punching holes in the corners and using a key ring to attach them each week. If your YW use class journals or smash books, these are the perfect size to tape into their individual books.

"Bearers of Heavenly Light":

This talk by Elder Uchtdorf is really beautiful! It was given at the Priesthood Session in October 2017. Divide the talk up into groups as explained in the lesson. Hang up the following board strips on the board. After the groups have had time to read their sections and discuss it within their group, write under each board strip what the girls learned from their sections. If appropriate, you can ask them if any of them have felt spiritual darkness and what they did to feel the light again. How can they be that light to others who are going through a dark time?

Face to Face:

I think this is a great video to show for this lesson! In my experience, if you want the class to answer questions after watching a video, then make sure you ask them the question BEFORE the video begins! That way, they can be looking for the answer. You can even give them a journal card from above or a piece of paper to write on so they remember what they want to say.

My favorite part of this video was when President Eyring told the youth that on Sundays, right before the Sacrament, to not only reflect on what they did wrong, but to think about all of the things they did RIGHT that week. It is so important to teach our Youth positive self talk!

Give one of the worksheets below to each of the girls in your class. If the budget allows, you could also hand out a little notebook to each girl. Encourage them to bring their worksheet/notebook to Sacrament next week and write down things they need to work on and the positives that they did during the past week. If they feel uncomfortable doing this at church, this could also be a good "before church" activity. Then when they take the Sacrament, they are already prepared and know what they need to be thinking about. After a few weeks, remember to follow up with the class to see if any of them have had any experiences they'd like to share about this activity. Make sure you are doing it yourself, too!

you'd like to read more about this, I wrote a blog post about it. Click here. My daughters also deal heavily with mental illness. My oldest daughter has had her fair share of suicidal thoughts. There have been two periods of times where she had to be on constant watch. We wouldn't have even known she had gotten to that point if her best friend hadn't reached out to me. I will forever be grateful for this friend who knew it was more important to tell the parents than it was to keep a friendship. My daughter was grateful for it in the end and was never mad at her friend.

This talk from President Holland has brought my family so much comfort. It was a pretty ground breaking talk in the church. Before this talk, mental illness wasn't talked about like it is now. Bishop's didn't have the resources to help those struggling and many people were told to "pray more" or "force yourself out of bed". The people in the mental illness community were so grateful when President Holland gave this talk! If you haven't already seen this, click here to go to the Church's website page on preventing suicide. There are many wonderful resources on this site.

Coming from someone who has dealt with this first hand, I want to express how important it is to help the Young Women understand compassion in situations like this. Yes there are those kids who say they're going to kill themselves every time they get upset or when they want attention. But that doesn't matter!!! My other daughter broke up with a boy awhile ago, and he threatened to kill himself. She told me this like it was a joke because she said he says it all the time. I called the school and talked to the counselor. His parents were very grateful that someone told them and got him into counseling right away. They had no idea he was having those thoughts. I hope you can help the Young Women in your class to be nonjudgemental in these situations and to be patient if their friend or loved one gets depressed. Don't give up on them! If all you can do is pray for them, then please continue to pray!

I've included this talk as one of the printables. I believe it is one of those talks that we each need to have to refer to often. There is also a poster of one of the quotes from this talk.

I created the worksheet to help the girls study this talk. Have them look for the ways that Elder Holland teaches us about how to best respond in these situations. Then have them think of someone they know who is struggling (it may be themselves) and have them write down a few ways that they can help that person.

"Like a Broken Vessel":

One section of this lesson is about Elder's Holland's talk, "Like a Broken Vessel" and suicide. I cannot express enoughhow timely this is right now. Our Youth are dealing with this in abundance right now. Ask any teenager you know ifthey know someone who as committed suicide or someone who has talked about committing suicide. I guarantee you, they all do.

My family has unfortunately had our fair share of mental illness. My husband's brother committed suicide a little overtwo years ago, leaving his three teenage children. There is no easy answer or quick healing from something like this. If

Teaching Tips:

There are a few videos in this lesson that are new for this year. They are all wonderful! I would make sure to give thegirls time to talk during this lesson. Let them ask questions and take time to listen to their experiences. I truly believethat this is one of those lessons where the girls can really learn from each other. If you have a Young Woman in yourward that you know has overcome a big challenge in her life, this would be a great opportunity to have her come in andspeak to your class if she feels comfortable. You as the teacher could also be ready to share some personal experiencesof times in your life that you've been able to rely on the Lord to overcome a challenge or get through a trial. It's good forthe girls to know that their leaders have had trials and that no one is free from challenges or problems.
