FUEL RECOMMENDATION

You must use unleaded petrol with anoctane number (RON) of 91 or higher. Yourvehicle is fitted with a restrictor in the fuelfiller pipe which will not allow the use oflarge nozzle used for dispensing leaded fuelat filling station.

CAUTIONUse of leaded fuel in vehicle equippedwith catalytic converter is prohibited, because leads deactivates the pollutantreducing components of catalyticconverter and may result in permanentdamage to catalytic converter.

Petrol/Ethanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and ethanol (grainalcohol), also known as gasohol, arecommercially available in some areas.Blends of this type may be used in yourvehicle if they are no more than 5%ethanol. Make sure this petrol-ethanol blendhas octane ratings no lower than thoserecommended for petrol.

Petrol/Methanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and methanol(wood alcohol) are also commerciallyavailable in some areas. DO NOT USEfuels containing more than 5% methanol

CAUTIONExposure to heat when fully fuelled inthis manner will result in leakage due tofuel expansion. To prevent such fuelleakage, stop filling after the filler nozzlehas automatically shut off, or whenusing an alternative non automaticsystem, initial vent blowback occurs.

under any circumstances. Fuel system damageor vehicle performance problems resulting fromthe use of such fuels are not the responsibilityof MARUTI SUZUKI and may notbe covered under Warranty.

Fuels containing 5% or less methanol maybe suitable for use in your vehicle if theycontain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.

NOTE:If you are not satisfied with the driveabilityor fuel economy of your vehicle when youare using a petrol/alcohol blend, you shouldswitch back to unleaded petrol containing noalcohol.

CAUTIONBe careful not to spill fuel containingalcohol while refuelling. Fuelscontaining alcohol can cause paintdamage, which is not covered underWarranty. The fuel tank has an air space to allowfor fuel expansion in hot weather. If youcontinue to add fuel after the filler nozzlehas automatically shut off or an initialblowback occurs, the air chamber willbecome full.

OPERATING YOUR VEHICLE

w WARNING• Reduce your speed and change down

to a lower gear before going down along or steep hill. A lower gear willallow the engine to provide braking.Avoid riding the brakes or they mayoverheat, resulting in brake failure.

• When driving on slippery roads, besure to slow down before changingdown. Excessive and or suddenchanges in engine speed may causeloss of traction, which could causeyou to lose control.

• Make sure that the vehicle iscompletely stationary before youchange into reverse.

CAUTION• To help avoid clutch damage, do not

use the clutch pedal as a footrestwhile driving or use the clutch tokeep the vehicle stationary on a hill.Depress the clutch fully whenchanging gear.

• When changing gears or starting off,do not race the engine. Racing theengine can shorten engine life andprevent smooth operation.

BRAKING

The distance needed to bring any vehicle to ahalt increases with the speed of the vehicle. The braking distance needed, for example, at60 km/h will be approximately 4 times greaterthan the braking distance needed at 20 km/h.Start to brake the vehicle when there is plentyof distance between your vehicle and thestopping point, and slow down gradually.

wwwww WARNINGIf water gets into the brake drums, brake performance may become poorand unpredictable. After drivingthrough water or washing theunderside of the vehicle, test the brakeswhile driving at a slow speed to see ifthey have maintained their normaleffectiveness. If the brakes are lesseffective than normal, dry them byrepeatedly applying the brakes whiledriving slowly until the brakes haveregained their normal effectiveness.

OPERATING YOUR VEHICLE

2H 2-wheel drive high range (rear-wheel drive). This position should be used for normaldriving on dry, hard surface.

4H 4-wheel drive highrange (high speedfourwheel drive). This position providesgreater traction than 2-wheel drive. Usethis driving on slippery roads (wet, snow-covered, muddy roads etc.) or off road.

N Neutral. Engine power is not transmittedto the wheels.

4L 4-wheels drive low range (low speed fourwheel drive). Use this for climbing ordescending steep hills, or off road driving.

Press the clutch when shifting the transferlever. If you have trouble shifting the lever, trypressing the clutch again or move the vehiclevery slightly and try shifting again.

CAUTION• The transfer lever may be shifted from

“4H” to “2H” or from “2H” to “4H”during driving when the vehicle isgoing straight ahead only.

• DO NOT operate the vehicle in 4H or4L on dry, hard surfaces.

• Make sure that you have shiftedcompletely into 4H or 4L byobserving that the 4WD indicatorlight is lit.

wwwww WARNINGDo not operate the vehicle unless thetransfer lever is fully engaged. Loss ofpower or transfer lever damage canresult from failure to completelyengage a position. Make sure you arecompletely familiar with the gearshiftoperation of your vehicle.CAUTION

If the instructions below are notfollowed, the transfer gear may bedamaged.• Bring the vehicle to a complete stop

before shifting the lever from “4H’ to“4L” or from “4L” to “4H”.

Servo assisted brakesYour vehicle has servo assisted brakes whichworks with the assistance of engine vacuum.

Page 46: 82C-74E-I TABLE OF CONTENTSmarutistorage.blob.core.windows.net/marutisuzukipdf/Gypsy.pdf · wheelalignment and tyre rotation, cleaning of injectors, adjustments of carburetor, ignition

46

82C-74E-I

wwwww WARNINGDo not switch off the engine whilevehicle is in motion, for example, whiledriving down a hill as this will causeloss of vacuum assistance leading toreduction of braking efficiencysubstantially.

If servo assistance is lost due to a stalledengine or other failures, the system is still fullyoperational on reserve power and you canbring the vehicle to a complete stop bypressing the brake pedal once and holding itdown. The reserve power is partly used upeach time you depress the brake pedal. Applysmooth and constant pressure to the pedal.Do not pump the pedal.

wwwww WARNINGOn loose surface where the wheels caneasily loose traction (such as gravel, etc.), the stopping distance required foryour vehicle may be greater than for acomparable vehicle with a conventionalbrake system. Allow for extra stoppingdistance when driving on loosesurfaces.

RUNNING-IN

CAUTIONThe future performance and reliabilityof the engine depends on the care andrestraint exercised during its early life.It is especially important to observe thefollowing precautions during the initial1000 km of vehicle operation.• After starting, do not race the

engine. Warm it up gradually.• Avoid prolonged vehicle operation at

a constant speed. Moving parts willbed in better if you vary your speed.

• Do not exceed 90 km/h in “4H” & “2H”and 50 km/h in “4L”.

• Start off from a stop slowly. Avoidfull throttle starts.

• If possible, avoid hard braking, especially during the first 300 km ofdriving.

• Do not drive slowly with thetransmission in a high gear.

• Drive the vehicle at moderate enginespeeds.

7-5

OPERATING YOUR VEHICLE

wwwww WARNINGEven without reserve power in the brakesystem, you can still stop the vehicle bypressing the brake pedal harder thannormally required. However, thestopping distance may be longer.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

CAUTIONTo minimize the possibility of catalystor other vehicle damage:• Maintain the engine in the proper

operating condition.• In the event of an engine

malfunction, particularly oneinvolving engine misfire or otherapparent loss of performance, havethe vehicle serviced promptly.

• Do not turn off the engine orinterrupt the ignition when thetransmission is in gear and thevehicle is in motion.

• Do not try to start the engine bypushing or towing the vehicle, orcoasting down a hill.

• Do not idle the engine with any sparkplug wires disconnected orremoved, such as during diagnostictesting.

• Do not idle the vehicle for prolongedperiods if idling seems rough orthere are other malfunctions.

• Do not allow the fuel tank to get nearthe empty level.

70F-05-005

The purpose of the catalytic converter installedon your vehicle is to convert exhaust pollutantsto harmless water vapour, carbon dioxide, andnitrogen. Use of leaded fuel in vehiclesequipped with catalytic converters isprohibited, because lead deactivates thepollutant-reducing components of the catalystsystem.

It is very important to keep the engine properlytuned. Engine misfiring, which can result froman improperly tuned engine, may causeoverheating of the catalyst. This may result inpermanent heat damage to the catalyst andother vehicle components.

w WARNINGBe careful where you park and drive;the catalytic converter and otherexhaust components can get very hot.As with any vehicle, do not park oroperate this vehicle in areas wherecombustible materials such as drygrass or leaves can come in contactwith a hot exhaust system.

IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY

The following instructions will help you improvefuel economy.

Avoid excessive idling:If you are to wait for more than a minute whileyou are parked, stop the engine and start itagain later. When warming up a cold engine, allow the engine to idle until the temperaturegauge pointer comes up to the “C” position. Inthis position, the engine is sufficiently warmfor starting off.

Avoid “fast” starts:Fast starts away from lights or stop signs willconsume fuel unnecessarily and shortenengine life. Start off slowly.

Avoid unnecessary stops:Avoid unnecessary deceleration and stopping.Try to maintain a slow, steady speed wheneverpossible. Slowing down and then acceleratingagain uses more fuel.

Keep a steady cruising speed:Keep as constant a speed as road and trafficconditions will permit.

Keep the air cleaner clean:A dirty air cleaner will cause the carburationsystem to supply too much fuel to the enginefor the amount of air being supplied. The resultis waste of fuel due to incomplete combustion.

Keep weight to a minimum:The heavier the load, the more fuel the vehicleconsumes. Take out any luggage or cargowhen it is not necessary.

Keep tyre pressures correct:Under-inflation of the tyres can waste fuel dueto increased running resistance of the tyres.Keep your tyres inflated to the correct pressureshown on the label on the driver’s side dooror door lock pillar.

TRAILER TOWING

Your vehicle was originally designed to carrypeople and a normal amount of cargo, not totow a trailer. Maruti Suzuki does not recommendyou use your vehicle to tow a trailer. Towing atrailer can adversely affect handling, durability, and fuel economy.

wwwww WARNING• Wear Your Seat Belts at All Times. The

driver and passengers should beproperly restrained at all times, usingthe seatbelts provided. Refer to the“SEATBELTS” section forinstructions on proper use of theseat belts.

• Never drive while under theinfluence of alcohol or other drugs.Alcohol and drugs can seriouslyimpair your ability to drive safely, greatly increasing the risk of injuryto yourself and others. You shouldalso avoid driving when you aretired, sick, irritated, or under stress.

IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 4WDVEHICLE AND 2WD VEHICLE

w WARNINGThis multipurpose vehicle has handlingcharacteristics that differ from aconventional passenger car. For yoursafety and that of your passengers, please read the following section verycarefully.

Your vehicle has higher ground clearance thanconventional passenger vehicle to make itcapable of performing in a wide variety of off-road applications. The higher groundclearance of your vehicle enables it to clearoff road obstacles such as rocks and treestumps that ordinary passenger vehicles cannot drive over. Specific design characteristicsgive it a higher center of gravity than ordinarycars. Consequently this vehicle will handledifferently than a vehicle with a lower centerof gravity. An advantage of the higher groundclearance is a better view of the road allowingyou to anticipate problems. It is not designedfor cornering at the same speed asconventional 2-wheel drive vehicles, or anymore than lowslung sports car are designedto perform satisfactorily under off-roadconditions. If possible, avoid sharp turns orabrupt manoeuvres. Failure to operate thisvehicle correctly may result in loss of controlor vehicle rollover.

ON PAVEMENT DRIVING

Since you will often use your vehicle on pavedroads, you should learn these guidelines foryour on-road driving.

Know your vehicleTake time to familiarise yourself with the uniquehandling characteristics of your vehicle. Firstdrive around in an area away from traffic.Practice turning the vehicle at a variety of speedsand directions. Get a feel for the greaterresponse in the steering that your vehicle hasover a conventional car.

Wear your seat belts at all timesThe driver and passenger should be properlyrestrained at all times, using the seat beltsprovided.

Slow down on curvesLearn to approach curves cautiously and at aconservative speed. Do not attempt to takecurves at the same speeds that you would in avehicle with a lower center of gravity.

Slow down in crosswindsThe stability of any vehicle will affected bystrong gusting crosswinds. This is especiallytrue with small 4-wheel drive vehicles becauseof the higher center of gravity. To minimise theeffects of crosswinds on your vehicle youshould drive slower under such conditions.

51

82C-74E-I DRIVING TIPS AND SAFE DRIVING

8-2

HIGH-SPEED DRIVING

When driving at a high-speed, pay attention tothe following:• Stopping distance progressively increases

with vehicle speed. Apply the brakes farenough ahead of the stopping point to allowfor the extra stopping distance.

• On rainy days, “Aquaplaning” can occur.“Aquaplaning” is the loss of direct contactbetween the road surface and the vehicle’styres due to a water film forming betweenthem. Steering or braking the vehicle while“Aquaplaning” can be very difficult, and lossof control can occur. Keep speed downwhen the road surface is wet.

• At high speeds, the vehicle may be affectedby side winds. Therefore, reduce speedand be prepared for unexpected buffeting, which can occur at the exits of tunnels, when passing by a cut of a hill, or whenbeing overtaken by large vehicles, etc.

DRIVING ON HILLS

• When climbing steep hills, the vehicle maybegin to slow down and show a lack ofpower. If this happens, you should changeto a lower gear so that the engine will againbe operating in its normal power range.Change rapidly to prevent the vehicle fromlosing momentum.

• When driving down a hill, the engine shouldbe used for braking by shifting to next lowergear.

w WARNINGTry not to hold the brake pedal downtoo long or too often while going downa steep or long hill. This could causethe brakes to overheat, resulting inreduced braking efficiency. Failure totake this precaution could result inloss of vehicle control.

CAUTIONWhen descending a down hill, NEVERturn the ignition key to the “OFF”position. Emission control systemdamage may result.

DRIVING ON SLIPPERY ROADS

Under wet road conditions you should drive ata lower speed than on dry roads due to possibleslippage of tyres during braking. When drivingon icy, snowcovered, or muddy roads, reduceyour speed and avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt braking, or sharp steering movements.Use 4-wheel drive high range (4H) for bettertraction.

Snow ChainsIf you use snow chains to increase tyre traction, observe the following precautions:

• Choose a safe place away from traffic toinstall the chains.

• When installing the chains carefully followthe manufacturer’s instructions.

• Install the chains on the front tyres.• With the chains on, drive only at slow and

moderate speeds.• Use 4-wheel drive high range (4H) for better

traction and directional stability.

DRIVING ON WET ROADS

CAUTION• When driving on wet roads, avoid driv-

ing through large amount of standingwater on the road. Large amount ofwater entering the engine compart-ment may cause damage to the en-gine and or electrical components.

• If stuck in deep water, do not start tillwater level drops.

• Water is incompressible substance, water inside engine is harmful tothe engine.”

52

82C-74E-IDRIVING TIPS AND SAFE DRIVING

8-3

wwwww WARNING• Make sure your tyres are in good

condition and always maintain thespecified tyre pressure. Refer to“TYRES” in the “INSPECTION ANDMAINTENANCE” section for details.

• Do not use tyres other than thosespecified by MARUTI SUZUKI. Neveruse different sizes or types of tyreson the front and rear wheels. Forinformation regarding the specifiedtyres, refer to the“SPECIFICATIONS” section.

• Never use oversized tyres orspecial shock absorbers andsprings to raise (jack up) yourvehicle. This will change thehandling characteristics.

• After driving through water, test thebrakes while driving at a slowspeed to see if they havemaintained their normaleffectiveness. If the brakes are lesseffective than normal, dry them byrepeatedly applying the brakeswhile driving slowly until the brakeshave regained their normaleffectiveness.

OFF ROAD DRIVING

Your vehicle is designed primarily for off-roaddriving. When you leave the pavement, youwill encounter driving surfaces of all kindswhich may change continually as you drive. In almost every case you will need to be inthe 4-wheel drive mode. Consequently, off-road conditions call for different drivingtechniques than from paved roads.

Steep incline requires cautionAlways inspect hills before you attempt to driveup them. Know what is on the other side andhow you will get back down. If you have anydoubt that it is not safe, do not attempt to driveover a hill. Never drive your vehicle up anextremely steep incline. Coming down a steephill can be trickier than getting up one. Keepthe vehicle heading straight down the hill onlow gear. Do not lock the brakes. If the vehiclebegins to slide, accelerate slightly to regainsteering control.

Wear your seatbelt at all timesAs in the case when you drive on thepavement, you and your passengers shoulduse the provided seatbelts at all times whendriving off the road.

Do not drive across the side of hillsTravelling across the side of a hill can beextremely hazardous. Most of the vehicle’sweight will be transferred to the downhill tyres, which could result in the vehicle rollingsideways. Whenever possible, avoid thispotential hazard. Also, if you have to come outof your vehicle on a sidehill always get out onthe uphill side.

Avoid sudden reactions in mud, ice, or snowWhen off-road conditions are slick, extraalertness by the driver is required. Reduceyour speed and avoid sudden movements ofthe vehicle, as you would for similar conditionson the pavement. Driving in deep snow or mudcan cause a loss of traction and an increasein resistance to the vehicle’s forward motion.Use 4WD low gear (4L) and maintain a steadybut moderate speed with a light touch on thesteering wheel and brakes under suchconditions.

wwwww WARNINGIn addition to the warnings listedabove, the following are important foroff-road and on-road driving.• Do not let anyone else drive your

vehicle unless they are also awareof these handling differences.

• Do not use worn out tyres.• Do not use 4-wheel drive for normal

driving on dry, hard surfaced roads.

CAUTION• Do not overtax the engine with higher

engine speed.• Wash your vehicle (including the

underside) after running throughsand, water pools, muddy spots, andoff-road areas.

• Bring the vehicle to a complete stopbefore shifting the transfer leverbetween 4WD high range (4H) and4WD low range (4L).

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR SAFE DRIVING

Starting1. Adjust the driver’s seat for the proper

driving posture.

2. Adjust the rear view mirror so as to obtainthe best possible rear view.

3. Before moving off, look forward and backto confirm safety.

4. Don’t start quickly, for it is dangerous andwastes fuel.

General driving1. Be sure to stop before the stop light and

stop sign. When moving into theintersection without any traffic lights orsigns, drive slowly to confirm safety.

72F-08-002

Exercise care in handling your vehicle. Beconscious of not only your own safety but alsothe safety of others on the road, and thus enjoythe best and most comfor table drivingexperience.

This section contains basic rules for safedr iving. Read it carefully for goodunderstanding of the content so that you canenjoy safe and pleasant driving in your MarutiSuzuki vehicle.

72F-08-008

2. Always follow other vehicles at a safedistance in order to prevent a rear-endcollision, should the vehicle ahead makea sudden stop.

3. Turn ON the turn signal at least 30 metersbefore making a turn or changing the laneso as not to be hit from behind.

4. Before entering a corner, decelerate to asafe speed. Don’t apply brakes duringcornering, or a cornering skid may occur.

5. When overtaking other vehicles, watch outfor the oncoming vehicle and carefullyconfirm the safety.

6. Don’t attempt zigzag driving which willhinder your control over the vehicle andcause an accident.

8-5

Braking1. Use the parking brake when parking your

vehicle and shift the gear shift lever intothe first gear or reverse gear position forthe sake of safety.

2. Don’ t use handbraking unlessunavoidable. It causes the vehicle toskid and a rearend collision occur. It is

72F-08-015

72F-08-011

especially dangerous when the tyres areworn, for they allow a larger skid.

Use foot brake in three stages

(1) Warn the vehicle behind you(2) Gradually apply the brake.(3) Bring the vehicle to a halt.

3. When driving on a downhill, try not to applythe brake but use the engine brakeeffectively. Overuse of the footbrake mayresult in total brake failure.

4. Avoid reckless high speed driving and tryto drive at a safe speed suitable for theroad conditions while maintaining aconstant speed.

5. The higher the speed, the narrower thedriver’s visual range becomes. In such astate, it is difficult to anticipate any hazardand the driver feels much fatigued.

6. Never do sharp handling during highspeed driving. You will lose your controlover your vehicle.

7. When overtaking or changing the lanewhile driving at a high speed, keep anample vehicle-to-vehicle distance.

Long distance driving1. Be sure to perform safety checks before

starting a trip.

2. Take rest at certain intervals to preventan accident which may occur when youare sleepy or tired.

MARGIN FOR SAFETYIt is important to allow yourself a margin forsafety during driving so that you can cope witherroneous or unexpected driving of otherdrivers. For that, observe the following.

• Drive at a safe speed.• Maintain a sufficient distance between

your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.• Don’t force yourself to overtake other

vehicles.• Don’t make quick start, hard steering or

sudden stops.• Allow an ample time in the driving

ENGINE OIL AND FILTER

70F-07-004E

Specified oilBe sure that the engine oil you use comes underthe API classification of SF, SG or SH. Selectthe appropriate oil viscosity according to theabove chart.

Oil Level CheckIt is important to keep the engine oil at thecorrect level for proper lubrication of yourvehicle’s engine. Check the oil level with thevehicle on a level surface. The oil levelindication may be inaccurate if the vehicle ison a slope. The oil level should be checkedeither before starting the engine or at least 5minutes after stopping the engine.

Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe oil off with a cleancloth, insert the dipstick all the way into theengine, then remove it again. The oil on thestick should be between the upper and lowerlimits shown on the stick. If the oil levelindication is near the lower limit, add enoughoil to raise the level to the upper limit.

RefillingRemove the oil filler cap and pour oil slowlythrough the filler hole to bring the oil level to theupper limit on the dipstick. Be careful not tooverfill. Too much oil is almost as bad as toolittle oil. After refilling, start the engine and allowit to idle for about a minute. Stop the engine, wait for five minutes and check the oil level again.

Changing Engine Oil and FilterDrain the engine oil while the engine is stillwarm.1) Remove the oil filler cap.2) Place a drain pan under the drain plug.3) Using the correct spanner remove the

drain plug and drain out the engine oil.

Tightening torque:5.0 kg-m (36.5 lb-ft)

w WARNINGThe engine oil temperature may be highenough to burn your fingers when thedrain plug is loosened. Wait until thedrain plug is cool enough to touch withyour bare hands.

wwwww WARNINGNew and used oil can be hazardous.Children and pets may be harmed byswallowing new or used oil. Keep newand used oil and used oil filters awayfrom children and pets.Continuous contact with used engineoil has been found to cause (skin)cancer in laboratory animals. Briefcontact with used oil may irritate skin.To minimize your exposure to used oil, wear a long-sleeve shirt andmoistureproof gloves (such asdishwashing gloves) when changingoil. If oil contacts your skin, washthoroughly with soap and water.Launder any clothing or rags if wetwith oil.Recycle or properly dispose of used oiland filters.

ENGINE COOLANT

Coolant Level CheckCheck the coolant level at the reservoir tank, not at the radiator. With the engine cool, thecoolant level should be between the “FULL”and “LOW” marks.

60G-09-039E

Adding CoolantIf the Coolant level is below the “LOW” mark, more coolant should be added. Remove thereservoir tank cap and add coolant until thereservoir tank level reaches the “FULL” mark.Never fill the reservoir tank above the “FULL”mark.

CAUTION• When adding or replacing coolant,

use a high quality ethylene glycolantifreeze and anticorrosion dilutedwith distilled water. If the lowestambient temperature in your area isexpected to be -150C (50F) or above, make the antifreeze concentration ofthe mixture you use at least 30% butno more than 50%. If -160C (30F) orbelow, make the concentration atleast 50%. If the 50% concentrationdoes not provide adequateprotection against freezing, followthe instructions on the antifreezecontainer to obtain the desiredfreezing point.

wwwww WARNINGIt is dangerous to remove the radiatorcap when the water temperature ishigh, because scalding fluid and steammay be blown out under pressure. Waituntil the coolant temperature haslowered before removing the cap.

Brake PedalCheck if the brake pedal stops at the regularheight without “spongy” feeling when youdepress it. If not, have the brake systeminspected by your MARUTI SUZUKI dealer. Ifyou doubt the brake pedal for the regular height, check it as follows:

With the engine running, measure the distancebetween the brake pedal and floor wall whenthe pedal is depressed with approximately 30kg (66 lbs) of force. The minimum distancerequired is 75 mm (3.0 in). Since your vehicle’sbrake system is self-adjusting, there is no needfor pedal adjustment. If the pedal to floor walldistance as measured above is less than theminimum distance required, have your vehicleinspected by your MARUTI SUZUKI dealer.

wwwww WARNINGIf you experience any of the followingproblems with your vehicle’s brakesystem, have the vehicle inspectedimmediately by your MARUTI SUZUKIdealer.• Poor braking performance• Uneven braking (Brakes not working

uniformly on all wheels.)• Excessive pedal travel• Brake dragging• Excessive noise• Pedal pulsation (Pedal pulsates

when depressed.)

NOTE:When measuring the distance between thebrake pedal and floor wall, be sure not toinclude any floor covering in the measurement.

70F-07-031E

Parking brakeCheck the parking brake for proper adjustmentby counting the number of clicks made by theratchet teeth as you slowly pull up on theparking brake lever to the point of fullengagement. The parking brake lever shouldstop between the 3rd and 8th ratchet toothand the rear wheels should be securely locked. If the parking brake is not properly adjustedor the brakes drag after the lever has beenfully released, have the parking brakeinspected and/or adjusted by your MARUTISUZUKI dealer.

CORROSION PREVENTION

It is important to take good care of your vehicleto protect it from corrosion.Listed below are instructions for how to maintainyour vehicle to prevent corrosion. Please read and follow these instructionscarefully.

Important Information About Corrosion

Common causes of corrosion1) Accumulation of road salt, dirt, moisture, or

chemicals in hard to reach areas of thevehicle underbody or frame.

2) Chipping, scratches and any damage totreated or painted metal surfaces resultingfrom minor accidents or abrasion by stonesand gravel.

Environmental conditions which acceleratecorrosion1) Road salt, dust control chemicals, sea air

or industrial pollution will all accelerate thecorrosion of metal.

2) High humidity will increase the rate ofcorrosion particularly when the temperaturerange is just above the freezing point.

3) Moisture in certain areas of a vehicle for anextended period of time may promotecorrosion even though other body sectionsmay be completely dry.

4) High temperatures will cause an acceleratedrate of corrosion to parts of the vehicle whichare not well ventilated to permit quick drying.

This information illustrates the necessity ofkeeping your vehicle (particularly theunderbody) as clean and dry as possible. It isequally important to repair any damage to thepaint or protective coatings as soon as possible.

How to Help Prevent Corrosion

Wash your vehicle frequentlyThe best way to preserve the finish on yourvehicle and to help avoid corrosion is to keep itclean with frequent washing.Wash your vehicle regularly during the winterand immediately after the winter. Keep yourvehicle, particularly the underside, as clean anddry as possible. If you frequently drive on salted roads, yourvehicle should be washed at least once a monthduring the winter. If you live near the ocean, yourvehicle should be washed at least once a monththroughout the year. For washing instructions, refer to the “VEHICLECLEANING” section.

Remove foreign material depositsForeign material such as salts, chemicals, roadoil or tar, tree sap, bird droppings and industrialfall-out may damage the finish of your vehicle

if it is left on painted surfaces. Remove thesetypes of deposits as quickly as possible. If thesedeposits are difficult to wash off, an additionalcleaner may be required. Be sure that any cleaneryou use is not harmful to painted surfaces and isspecifically intended for your purposes. Followthe manufacturer’s directions when using thesespecial cleaners.

Repair finish damageCarefully examine your vehicle for damage tothe painted surfaces. Should you find any chipsor scratches in the paint, touch them upimmediately to prevent corrosion from starting. If the chips or scratches have gone through tothe bare metal, have a qualified body shop makethe repair.

Keep Passenger and luggage compartmentsclean.Moisture, dirt or mud can accumulate under thefloor mats and may cause corrosion.Occasionally, check under these mats to ensurethat this area is clean and dry. More frequentchecks are necessary if the vehicle is used offroad or in wet weather.Certain cargos such as chemicals, fertilizers, cleaners, salts, etc., are extremely corrosiveby nature. These products should be transportedin sealed containers. If a spill or leak does occur, clean and dry the area immediately.

Store your vehicle in a dry, well-ventilatedarea.Do not park your vehicle in a damp, poorlyventilated area. If you often wash your vehiclein the garage or if you frequently drive it inwhen wet, your garage may be damp. Thehigh humidity in the garage may cause oraccelerate corrosion. A wet vehicle maycorrode even in a heated garage if theventilation is poor.

wwwww WARNINGDo not apply additional undercoatingor rust preventive coating on or aroundexhaust system components such asthe exhaust pipes, etc. A fire could bestarted if the undercoating substancebecomes overheated.

Cover your vehicleIf you cannot regularly park your vehicle in agarage, we recommend you use a vehicle cover.Years of exposure to midday sun can cause thecolours in paint, plastic parts, and fabrics tofade. Covering your vehicle with a high-quality,“breathable” vehicle cover can help protect thefinish from the harmful UV rays in sunlight, andcan reduce the amount of dust and air pollutionreaching the surface.
