For my invite, I knew I wanted to do the 80/35 Music Festival. I love music and I felt like I could do something cool with it. I had no idea what I was going to do however. I looked at the line up for the festival and there were lots of indie bands per-forming. I decided to look up posters for indie bands on Google images and I found lots of bizarre illustrations. I loved it. They looked so cool so I knew what I was going to do.

When I got to illustrating the invitation, I just kept thinking bizarre and odd. I had lots of fun with it. This is not what I typically draw but I had a blast drawing all those bizarre illustrations. At the critique, everyone seemed to like the one with the monster where you open his mouth gateway fold style so I went with that.

For the envelope I wanted to keep going with the bizarre theme. I also wanted to add a bit of psychedelic vibes in the en-velope. For the colors I took some inspiration from some really cool pieces of art I found on Google images. Some of the piec-es of art were what I like to call a “Super-flat hybrid”. Super-flat is an art style that go to be really popular in Japan in the 80s and on. It is known for using bright pastel colors and having a lot going on in the images. There are many anime and manga artists who are relatively well known super-flat artists. I wanted to have the bright colors and a lot going on like the super-flat art but I wanted to use more vibrant colors instead of only pastel colors.

For my proof of the envelope and card, nothing was really set in stone. I was mostly messing around with the colors. The layout was going to stay pretty much the same minus the parts where I done goofed like when some of the panels were upside down or reversed. I knew the colors needed to be changed in parts and I needed to tie the card together with the envelope bet-ter. You also pointed out that my letter was sort of bland by comparison to my bright and colorful envelope so I needed to add some flare to the letter itself so it can stand together with the envelope without looking boring. I also wanted to make it so the little monster would be peeking out of the envelope.

I tried to use a pale green color for the background of the envelope hoping to make the illustrations stand out more but it just didn’t work for me so I used a more vibrant green and I really liked how it turned out. I also decided to add psychedelic swirls on the monster card to tie it in with the envelope and to make the card more interesting. I also added a handwritten font for the inside of the letter and hand-drew the header of the card.

In the end I was pretty happy with how it turned out. The felt paper added a nice texture to the letter and the super smooth paper worked well with how i envisioned the monster’s skin would feel. I was a very time consuming en-devour hav-ing to hand-draw all of the illustrations but I think it payed off in the end,
