TIME TO TAKE SOME TIME AWAY

Queenstown Lakes │ New Zealand

Taking time out – it can be a struggle.

Before you know it, your boots are dusty

and your pack needs a little love.

Work, commitments, responsibility.

We get it. But what if this year was

different? What if you started saying

“yes” more? Adventure is waiting.

It’s time to take some time away.

Mihiteria King hails from the real far North. Te Rarawa from the Hokianga and she’s proud of it. Forthright is another adjective that springs to mind to describe this articulate woman.

A trained psychotherapist, Mihiteria’s language is visually rich, peppered with many stories.

“You’ll never get a yes or no answer when you ask me a question, always a full story.” Mihiteria says, laughing, as she

takes me back to the Hokianga, for it’s up that way that you’ll fi nd the Waipoua forest - home of Tane Mahuta - New Zealand’s largest living Kauri tree.

Not surprisingly, a visit to the forest is on the list for many tourists.

It’s such a peaceful place she explains, that even the sound of people talking becomes an unwelcome distraction.

“Going in there, to greet Tane Mahuta, you wander from busyness to stillness. There’s a reverence - like going to nature’s cathedral. So I waiata, and the talking stops, down go the phones and they just start being, to be with the wairua, to be with nature, y’know?” Says Mihiteria describing a recent visit to Waipoua.

“The last time I went,” she continues, “I sang three waiata, and after, I offered a

mihi to those who’d gathered, to explain the words and why I sing. The way I see it, is that being there at that time was an opportunity to share knowledge and insight from my world, from te Ao Māori, to enhance their experience of being with the bush, the forest, te ngahere. I wanted them to have the best experience possible.

Funnily enough it’s this story which makes a lovely metaphor for the role she has at Stanley St, which she likens to a 'Cultural Anthropologist'. On one level she explains and shares insight informed by a Māori worldview and perspective for both clients and the agency alike. But on a much deeper level, you can see how the staff gravitate towards her and engage her with their stories and lives to realise the true value she adds.

This is in part because Mihiteria is such a good and empathic listener, but also because she helps bring a calmness to a business which at times is anything but.

Typically though, Mihiteria has her own view, describing her role as giving her mana to the agency and in turn bringing the mana of Stanley St to the client.

“It’s all about mana and relationships,” explains Mihiteria. “It’s about bringing the best of me, what I understand and know, so the client gets the best experience.”

Mihiteria may not describe herself as a secret weapon for NZ's largest independent advertising agency, but be left in no doubt that she is.

More evidence that Stanley St is the most integrated agency in every way they can be.

Broadcaster Scotty Morrison (Ngāti Whakaue) is passionate about te reo. In fact the only thing he’s probably more passionate about (apart from his family of course) is his beloved home town, Roto-Vegas. Mind you, Rotorua may as well have been the entertainment capital Las Vegas, given he grew up there with his famous rellies; entertainer Sir Howard Morrison and actor Temuera Morrison.

Scotty reckons all he inherited was tone deafness and two left feet, although the latter probably helped him with some hard-to-tackle footwork on the footy fi eld, where he proudly emulated his dad John by making the BOP rep team - as well as the NZ Māori team and NZ Sevens squad.

Growing up Scotty didn’t speak te reo Māori. Few did then. Things changed when he went to Waikato University in 1991. His fi rst grade? A “very lucky C-minus” (your secret’s safe with us mate).

Luckily for him he went fl atting in his second year with native te reo speakers. Survival kicked in as he quickly learned his fi rst words; E hika, nā wai taku kai i kai?(Hey who ate my dinner?) and Nāku ngāutauta kai i horoi inapō, e hoa (I did the dishes last night cuz).

For the last ten years Scotty’s taught Māori and The Treaty at universities, (Mastermind Fact: he’s also related to Treaty co-author Governor William Hobson) and enjoyed a career in broadcasting as host of Māori news show Te Karere.

He’s also given talks on te reo at Oxford, been an actor, and has co-written four books on learning te reo with wife Stacey. Oh yeah, for good measure he’s also hoping to achieve

a karate black belt with two of his kids this year.

All of which means he’s a busy man - wearing lots of different hats. And clothes - like his favourite 3 Wise Men kit, which includes this suit (The Harley, $700 includes 2 pairs of pants), shirt (The Vanguard, $120/3 for $300), shoes (The Santana $230/2 prs for $333) and belt ($60/3 accessories for $150). It all goes particularly well with the awesome whalebone Kotiate - given to him by Stacey – that he wields here.

Yep it’s a busy life but a great life Scotty reckons - “Every day I get to have a positive impact on the normalisation of Māori language. How good is that?”

Well said mate. Now read on for a bit more that he’s well written too.

SOME OF THE journeys in this issue of Kia Ora are a little different. We still visit fascinating destinations – the red centre of Australia, sports-mad Chicago and the Islands of Tahiti, for example – but we also take a trip back in time.

To celebrate Air New Zealand’s 80th birthday we look into the airline’s history, from early predecessor Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL) through to today. It’s an excursion from old-school luxury (imagine being served caviar and lobster, or having beef Wellington carved at your seat) through to today’s fresh thinking, like the innovative Economy Skynest sleep pods. There are plenty of human stories too. You’ll meet generations of the same family who work for the airline, as well as employees who’ve been with the company 40-plus years.

Entrepreneurs find inspiration in some interesting places, and one of our business stories has a great example. Inventor Mark Stolten had his lightbulb moment in a physiotherapist’s waiting room. A poster of the inner workings of the human body helped him transform his toy bricks into a flexible building system. Matt Philp’s story reveals how he pulled it off.

Jo Bates“There’s a dynamic energy that’s driving new ways of thinking and doing in Christchurch,” says Jo Bates who wrote our business story about a hemp venture in the city. “The guys at The Brothers Green exemplify what this new city is about – people pursuing what they are passionate about, and many are creating business and initiatives that are sustainable.”

Jacqueline Loates-HaverE D I TO R

Sharon StephensonThe hardest decisions writer Sharon Stephenson had to make in the Tahiti islands of Bora Bora and its lesser-known neighbour, Raiatea, were which idyllic beach to swim at, which tropical fruit to gorge on and which cocktail to drink at sundown. “Tahiti is about relaxation to the power of 10. It’s where you go to unplug in lovely surroundings.”

Alice Neville“My nieces and nephews were eager to help me research the Auckland feature,” says Alice Neville. “Viewing my city through the eyes of a child has reinvigorated my love for the place. I’m now gazing with innocent wonder at birds and trees, and assessing cafes and bars for kids’ menus and buggy access, as well as whether they’ve got decent IPAs on tap.”

TO SAY I’VE had a challenging start in the aviation business is an understatement. No one could have predicted the effects of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that have impacted many businesses here and overseas. But it is at times like this you can’t underestimate the collective power of your people, key partners and customers to work through challenges together.

There’s no doubt we have a great team and it has been evident to me since joining, how dedicated and passionate Air New Zealanders are. Their ability to rally together in tough times shows the sort of ‘can do’ attitude that’s been a hallmark of our history.

When I took up the role of Chief Executive Officer in February this year, I let customers know I was really keen to get their feedback on how we can make our airline even better. Within a month I had more than 8000 customers take the time to share their views with me. What a terrific level of engagement!

And all this comes on top of more than 2000 Air New Zealanders sharing their perspectives on what more we can do to delight our customers.

It’s such a privilege to lead a company that customers and staff feel so passionately about supporting. Needless to say, there are a bunch of recommendations coming out of all this feedback, so expect to see further positive enhancements to the

Greg ForanA I R N E W Z E A L A N D C E O

airline as our 80th anniversary progresses. On 30 April 1940, we took our first

flight to Sydney as TEAL, and as we gear up to celebrate this great milestone, what has stood out for me is that people have always been at the heart of the airline – alongside our pioneering spirit and innovative approach to doing things differently and challenging the norm.

Our latest invention, the Economy Skynest – a working prototype of sleep pods for long-haul travel – is just another example of the sort of outside-the-box thinking we’ve become known for. When it was unveiled, the Skynest made headlines around the world.

It’s an honour to lead a company that has had care of people, innovation and a deep connection to Aotearoa and Kiwis as cornerstones of its business for 80 years. I look forward to being able to turn my attention to the future and where to next for our airline.

Kia ora and welcome
