My original plan was to take 2 ½ months off work, but about two months before my scheduled last day, I went into labor. I can’t explain the thoughts going through my head as I was rushed to the emergency room. When I got there, they told me that I was having contractions that were only four minutes apart and that there was a real chance for a premature birth. I was terrified, but they managed to stabilize my condition and stop the contractions, which kept me in the hospital for two weeks. (So much for staying at work another two months.) It wasn’t how I’d planned to leave work, and they told me I couldn’t go back until after my baby was born. Although I was stable, I was still close to giving birth, and any strain could mean it would start again. In other words, I had to have two months of bed rest until my due date, and I needed to always stay within five minutes of the hospital. Of course, we were busy at home remodeling and getting ready for the baby, so bed rest wasn’t as stress-free as the doctors imagined. Despite our best efforts, little Mia was determined to get here ahead of schedule. Fortunately, when I woke up with contractions for real, it was only five days before the due date. And since I had already gone through the first half of labor, Mia came quick and easy. Four hours after waking up, I was holding a strong, healthy baby in my arms who was already holding up her own head. I can already tell that Mia is going to be stubborn; she kept me out of work two months longer than intended, and we’ve gone through many types of bottles trying to get her to feed. But my family and I couldn’t be happier. Julian beams every time he looks at her, and our oldest daughter is an excited big sister, picking out Mia’s clothes for the day and rocking her to sleep at night. It may not have happened according to plan, but I was blessed with an easy final delivery and a happy, healthy baby. And since getting back to the practice last month, I’ve been able to tie up all the loose ends after my abrupt departure. I’m grateful for my family, for all of you understanding patients, and, of course, for the rest of the wonderful staff here who made it so easy on me this last spring. When you’re pregnant, events rarely go according to plan, as many of you who had an appointment with me in early March know.

(So much for staying at work another two months.)

It wasn’t how I’d planned to leave work, and they told me I couldn’t go back until after my baby was born.

Visit a hustling, bustling tourist trap and what do you get? Crowds of competitive travelers and a local population that is sick to death of them. Visit a place with happy people, and you get good service, friendly faces, and you’ll learn firsthand what Harvard researchers affirmed in a 2012 study: Happiness is contagious.

Luckily for the average traveler, the places that topped a nationwide Gallup poll and the United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report have plenty to offer in addition to cheerful locals.

THE HAPPIEST STATES IN THE U.S.

If we were to tell you that Hawaii is the happiest state in the country, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. And sure enough, Hawaii ranked first in overall happiness for the sixth consecutive year. The sunny beaches, rich culture, and perfect weather give tourists a taste of paradise that the natives enjoy all year long.

Next in line is a state that has little in common with the Aloha State. Alaska came in second place for the third consecutive year. With eight national parks, including Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic, Alaska’s 663,000 square miles are filled to the brim with the wonders of nature.

THE HAPPIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD

Denmark has long been the standard-bearer in this category. This year, it relinquished the title to its Scandinavian sister. Norway is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas on earth, most notably its western fjords like the world-famous Geirangerfjord and Nærøfjord. For the city wanderer, you’ll find choice seaside restaurants and walkable streets in towns like Bergen, the country’s second-largest city, which sports rainbow architecture and a 15th-century waterfront.

Knowing the heart of a destination begins and ends with its people. Tack on beautiful scenery and daydream-worthy activities, and you just found yourself the perfect vacation.

SWEATIN’ IN THE SUNSHINE

1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and jalapeno and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute.

2. Stir in quinoa, vegetable broth, beans, tomatoes, corn, chili powder, and cumin; season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce

heat and simmer until quinoa is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Stir in avocado, lime juice, and cilantro.

3. Serve immediately.

This healthy, tasty, filling dish is a cinch to make on a busy weeknight. And cleanup’s a breeze!

Recipe adapted from DamnDelicious.net.

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 jalapeno, minced

• 1 cup quinoa

• 1 cup vegetable broth

• 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed

• 1 (14.5-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes

• 1 cup corn kernels, frozen, canned, or roasted

• 1 teaspoon chili powder

• ½ teaspoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 avocado, halved, seeded, peeled, and diced

• Juice of 1 lime

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Coconut oil is one of nature’s great multitaskers. You can cook with it, bake with it, use it as a dietary supplement, apply it to your skin, and run it through your hair — all which deliver unique benefits. In this issue, we’re going to look at three of the most immediate benefits you can enjoy by using coconut oil.

Rejuvenate your skin. Instead of reaching for lotion or body oil, reach for the coconut oil. It’s a single ingredient, so you know exactly what you’re putting on your skin — which means you don’t have to worry about any sort of skin reaction. That is, as long as you aren’t already allergic to coconut! It helps keep skin hydrated and youthful-looking, plus it can treat symptoms related to dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and numerous other skin conditions. Just keep in mind, it cannot treat the base cause of any of these conditions.

Give your hair extra luster. The plant-based fatty acids in coconut oil help alleviate dry hair, dry scalp, and dandruff. At the same time, it can help reduce the effects of everyday damage, including sun damage. Use coconut as-is, or combine it with an essential oil for an extra punch. Apply it about 30 minutes before showering and let it set, then wash it out of your hair! Just be sure not to use your typical shampoo to wash away the oil. Let the hot water take of it. It may take a little longer to wash away the oil residue, but you’ll be left with soft, clean hair.

Freshen your smile. When swished around in the mouth, coconut oil can reduce bacteria, whiten teeth, and freshen your breath. It’s all thanks to coconut oil’s antibacterial properties — and the fact it literally pulls bacteria away from your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues, as you swish it around. All it takes is a tablespoon of oil and about 5-20 minutes. Once you’re done, spit the oil into the trash. That may sound a little gross, but avoid spitting in the sink. The oil may solidify and cause a clog.

There’s only one kind of professional grade raw 100 percent alkaline coconut oil in the world, which is the kind we sell to our patients at Wrigleyville Dental. Check it out at skinnyandcompany.com, and then try some or pick up a jar the next time you come in!

In every aspect of contemporary life, convenience is a major priority. We’re busier than previous generations, and we need services that can keep up with our hectic schedules. Entertainment is on demand, food can be delivered to your door in ready-to-cook portions, and you can have a taxi at your location with a few taps on your phone. It’s no surprise, then, that cosmetic dentistry has become much more convenient in recent years. Patients are able to get the smile they want in record time. Let’s take a look at some of the latest and greatest from the world of cosmetic dentistry. INVISALIGN. You’re an adult with a career. Yes, you need straight teeth, but you don’t want to look like a big 12-year-old with braces. For you, Invisalign may be the way to go. We map out your mouth with laser technology and create a series of retainers that progressively get straighter as your teeth move into their correct positions. Invisalign retainers are clear and removable, meaning you can eat and drink without the hassle of braces. And if you start treatment before the end of July, we’ll throw in a free whitening — a $199 value!

DENTAL IMPLANTS. It wasn’t so long ago that the only treatments for tooth replacement were bridges, crowns, and dentures. These

are cumbersome, invasive procedures that look artificial and have long recovery periods. With the advent of dental implants, and now mini dental implants, replacing a tooth is easier than ever before. When you opt for implants, you won’t need temporary replacements while your permanent fixtures are being made. Because implants are placed directly into your jawbone, they don’t need to be removed. And at Wrigleyville Dental, we test bio-compatibility of all implant materials before the procedure. That way, we know that your unique body chemistry will be compatible with the implant. A WEALTH OF WHITENING OPTIONS. If you want white teeth, it pays to do it right — through your dentist. We offer options such as, custom-made trays and Magic Mud whitening powder and toothpaste. Magic Mud is an all-natural whitening product made with activated charcoal that works wonders, and it won’t damage your teeth or cause you pain if your teeth are already sensitive. We love that whitening product. If you are interested in whitening your teeth, visit our office and we can go over several options that best suit your needs and your teeth.

As the summer sun begins to beat down, your excuses to avoid working out go up in smoke. Not only does the heat provide more opportunities to get out and sweat, it also gives you a chance to get creative with your exercise routine. Here are some ways to mix it up and get outdoors.

Take advantage of hills. According to Fitness Magazine, a study from California Pacific Orthopedic and Sports Medicine found that “outdoor exercisers lost an average of 7.43 pounds and 6.17 percent of body fat in eight weeks” due to the constant challenge of “inclines, declines and obstacles.” Instead of ramping up your treadmill, find a hill around your home. Ideally, you want the incline to be between a 6- and 8-percent grade. After a thorough warmup, do a series of all-out sprints up the length of the hill, recovering on your walk back down.

Try the park bench press. Next time your daily jog leads you into the local park, find a sturdy park bench. The elevated nature of the bench makes it perfect for all sorts of body-weight exercises. The possibilities are endless. Try doing squats, double- and single-leg, using the bench as a support. Then, sit on the bench with your hands on either side of your hips. Slide your rear off the bench, supporting yourself with your hands, and do 12 to 15 dips, bending your elbows up and down. To get your cardio in, do a series of step-ups to the bench, followed by box jumps. Then you can continue your jog as a cool-down.

In the sun, all yoga becomes hot yoga. Yoga is already excellent for increasing flexibility and strength, but add in the heat of the summer sun and it becomes even more effective. Set up your yoga mat anywhere the sun beats down and start your favorite yoga routine. Switch positions slightly faster than you would in a normal session — this will add a cardio-boosting element to your yoga practice and increase blood flow, compounding the positive effects of every stretch.
