June 1995 $750 , 000 gift to Sudbur y General three quarter million dollar check - that's $ 75 plus four zeros - went to Sudbury General Hospital in what was Inco's largest do- nation to a single Ontario medical facility. The donation, engraved on a giant stainless steel check, was a significant boost to the hospital's three-year cam- paign to raise $9.4 million to build a redeveloped emer- gency trauma and critical care area at the hospital. Ontario Division president Jim Ashcroft, in a brief check presentation ceremony at the hospital recently, said the trauma centre would help doctors pick up valuable sec- onds in those critical first few minutes of treating emer- gency/trauma patients. The team began Inco's hat trick by winning the provincial con- test in 1993. Last year, a Levack team kept the trophy in Sudbury. What's even more telling about the professionalism, dedication and skills of the Inco miner is the fact that only the narrowest of mar- gins separated the winners from the losers at the district competitions held in Sudbury to pick the best team for the provincials. In the stiffest competition in recent memory between the best squads from mining com- panies across the province, the team of Pierre Lauzon, Rick Beaulieu, Jim MacLellan, Moe Sanche, Lloyd Haney, Brian Vallier, Bob Neville and Richard Bleskie emerged vic- torious "Frood-Stobie pushed us over the top, but obviously it was the standard set by all Inco teams that put us into the record books," said Tom. In the' 80s,Inco was associated with ef-forts at the birth centre, car-diac rehabilitation centre anda campaign to make Lauren-tian Hospital the host hospi-tal for northern Ontario's firstregional cancer treatmentcentre. -

Jim added that the gener-osity of northerners in gen-eral is the major reasonfor the success of such cam-paigns.

The gift brings the traumafund within $2.5 million of itstarget, and hospital campaignofficials are hopeful that theInco donation and other siz-able personal and corporatedonations in the works willput the campaign over thetop within the next fivemonths.

In thanking Inco for its do-nation, campaign chairmanBob Brown said Inco has con-tinuously given support andencouragement to the cam-paign since it was begun sometwo and a half years ago inspite of the many distractionswhich have resulted from gov-ernment studies and restraintprograms.

"It is through the generoussupport and encouragementover the years, of corporationssuch as Inco, the communityand government, that Sud-bury has become a major pro-vider of health servicesthrough its hospitals and Can-cerTreatment Centre. Sudburyis also a centre for learningthrough Laurentian Univer-sity and Cambrian Collegeand tourism is enhancedthrough Science North.

He said Inco was in at thestart of these institutions andcontinually supports themboth financially and throughthe talents of its employees.

The Region of Sudbury willpick up $4.4 million of thetotal, the Inco donation andothers in the $5 millionpublic portion make up thedifference.

Jim said he sees Inco's par-ticipation in the campaign as"a vital expression of our so-cial responsibility as a corpo-ration," adding that' Inco hasalways tried to be a strong

chairman and chief executiveofficer Mike Sopko left withgraduating students, theirfamilies and Laurentian Uni-versity officials and facultyduring convocation exercisesrecently.

"The single biggest hurdlestudents will face as they crossthis threshold today is thespeed of change in our soci-ety," Inco's chairman andchief executive officer told the.students

Mike, who received an Hon-orary Doctor of Business de-gree at the convocation, saidit took from the time of Christto the middle of the 18th cen-tury for knowledge to double."It doubled again in the next150 years, and then again injust 50 years. Today it doublesevery four or five years. Morenew information hasbeenpro-duced in the last 30 years thanin the previous 5,000.

"You are graduating at atruly extraordinary time forthis community, for Ontarioand for Canada," he said."People at graduation ceremo-nies generally expect somewise thoughts from their guestspeaker, a distillation of wis-dom for life's road ahead. Ican only urge you to be able toinnovate, to roil with thepunches --and there will bepunches - and to strive forperfection."

Mike, who was describedin the convocation programas a "significant contributorto improving the global com-petitiveness of the Sudbury Re-gion," said Sudbury's relianceon the fortunes of the nickelindustry has lessened, a ben-eficial change that the univer-sity has helped to bring about.

"Sudbury has had a roller-coaster history, its fortunespegged almost exclusively tothe nickel industry," he added,"but that reliance has beenlessened as the region'seconomy broadened to be-come a public service area fornortheastern Ontario. Govern-ment departments, hospitals,educational institutions - in-cluding this university - haveall contributed to that benefi-cial change," he said.

Mike said he wasn't quitesure what prompted the honorof receiving the honorary doc-torate, but if it was to recog-nize the links between Incoand Laurentian, between busi-ness and academia, betweenindustry and educators, thenhe was very pleased indeed.

"I think that Inco, born andbred here in Sudbury, has avery bright future as itbecomesincreasingly a global opera-tion," said Mike.

The convocation programdescribed Mike as a formerpresident of Inco's Ontario Di-vision based in Sudbury whohas retained dose ties withthis community while mov-ing on to higher offices exter-nally. According to the pro-gram, Dr. Sopko had contrib-uted greatly to developing andmaintaining links between themining industry and the uni-

He said no person can stayon top of the growth of knowl-edge any longer, nor even theflow of information every day.

"For its part, the nickel in-dustry has also changed," hesaid. "Inco miners must stillcompete with those down theroad at Falconbridge. But eachand every one of us also knowsourcompetition is increasinglyfrom the Norilsk complex inSiberian Russia and from anynumber of operators in thetropical laterite ore beltsaround the world. Even withinInco, which once sourced all ofits ore here in the Sudbury Ba-

He said Inco has new minesbeing developed in Sudburyand in Manitoba and Inco isexpanding its Indonesian op-eration. "Longer term, we arelooking to new projects in Bra-zil and in New Caledonia.

"In terms of the Ontarioeconomy, we are at what Ibelieve is an important cross-roads. Ontario has comethrough a recession unlike anydownturn we've experiencedsince the 1930s. After decadesof growth we've had to learnthat we cannot keep takinglarger pieces of the economicpie. In fact, we need to findways to slice the pie differ-ently. That in turn has causedenormous upheavals in theway most public institutionsoperate."

Female pensioners take no back seatin their contributions to Inco

I nco's female pensionersmay be outnumbered bythe men but their contri-

butions are just as valuable.From taking on men's du-

ties while men fought inWorld War II to caring for.Inco patients at the Copper'Cliff Hospital, women havemade their mark.

Eveline Bernier retired-,from the Copper Cliff Hospi-tal Kitchen and Cleaning staffin 1969 with 12 years senior-ity. But her Inco career actu-ally began in 1942 when sheworked three years at theCreighton Mine rockhouseand lamproom during thewar.

"It didn't count on my sen-'iority but I repaired and re-charged lamps while the menfought overseas,"said Eveline,75. "It was understood thatwe were to give up the jobswhen the men returned fromthe war - and it was onlyright since they had beenfighting for us."

Despite two back opera-tions ands knee replacement,Eveline makes a point of at-tending Pensioner Days everyyear.

"I used to be quite a danc-ing fiend," she smiled, "but Ican't do that any more. Myactivities are very limited andI'm lucky to be able to drive acar, but I enjoy coming toPensioner Days each year andseeing my old friends fromthe Copper Cliff Hospital."

Friends like Julie Stinson,77, a diet supervisor at thehospital who retired in 1967.

"Gardening, cards, hob-bies and volunteer work oc-cupymytime now," said Julie,who, until a year ago, volun-teered at the Inner City Homein Sudbury.

"I always come to thisevent because I have verygood memories of Inco.There's no kitchen at the hos-pital now. There's not evenan operating room. But atone time it was a completefunctioning hospital for Incoemployees and their families- and then for the entire com-munity in the early 1970s."

Another pensioner withfond memories of the hospi-•_al is 64-year-old registerednurse Rita Lapalme, who re-ired in 1985 from the Nickel-

Refinery."I had a very,good career

at Inco but I'm also enjoyingmy retirement," she said. "Ienjoy having time for myselfalthough I continue to bebusy. I haven't lost touch withInco because I still receive theTriangle and I still havefriends at the refinery. I cometo Pensioner Days every yearbecause it gives me a chanceto meet people I may not haveseen in years."

The trio of Copper CliffHospital graduates became afoursome when joined on thesteps of the Caruso Club byNorma Darroch, 71, who re-tired in 1984 as a registerednurse with OccupationalHealth.

said Wilma, who winters inFlorida and summers in Sud-bury. "I've only been retired ashort time but I tell you thatPensioner Days is a veryworthwhile event. You go yourseparate ways when you re-tire and it's rare foryour pathsto cross, so this is very, verynice."

The advent of the femaleminer had already begun be-fore retired and she views thesuccess of the moves as a posi-tive sign for the company.

"It's about time a predominantly male industry recognizes that women are capable of doing what were predominantly male jobs. This isgiving them an opportunityto do so. My own memories oInco are very good ones. I wa.,able to bid on a job in Training and I worked for a veryforward-looking supervisorwho made me a trainer -which at the time was a pre-dominantly male job. I wa<able to see and do things mostwomen never had the oppor-tunity to . I rode in the crane:atop the Copper Refinery anctravelled underground to thedeepest level of CreightonMine.

"It was an incredible edu-cation and I met some of thegrandest human beings in mylife."

Florence Husson maynever had ridden a crane nottravelled to the bottom o1Creighton Mine, but the sprypensioner has been just abouteverywhere else.

"I love retirement," shestated emphatically. "I'vedone a lot of travelling andhope to do some more. I'vebeen to the United States,across Canada , to Europethree times , Australia,Mexico , Hawaii - you nameit, I've been there.

Florence 's Inco memoriesare those of a fun workplaceand fun - loving co-workers.

Fred Gilpin , one of almost3,000 pensioners attendingthis year 's week-long Pen-sioner Days celebration, fig-ures his annual reunion withold Inco pals is more thanworth it.

"I've been coming here forthe past nine or 10 years,"said the 73-year-old pensionerwho retired from the CopperCliff Machine Shop in 1978."The Inco event comes atabout the same time as myannual navy reunion," saidthe wartime sailor , " so I usu-ally combine the two in a twoor three-week stay in Ontario."

Fred followed his daugh-ters out on the west coast whenhe completed his 39 Inco years.He said he became familiarwith the Vancouver area dur-ing his Navy days.

"I've talked with other Inco

people who live in B.C. fromtime to time, but mostly onlyon the phone. There's a lot ofInco people in B .C. but its abig province and they're scat-tered all over the place."

Talking about the old timeswith people he 's known since hewas a teen-ager is the highlightofhisSudburytrips. "I knowalotof people here . I played hockeywith a lot of them. We do a lot ofr9 "

He sees little difference be-tween the people he retiredwith and the "young guys"joining the annual celebra-tions. "Inco people will alwaysbe the some . The camarade-rie, the concern for each otherhasn't changed a bit."

Blondie, 62, a Mills main-tenance mechanic who re-tired in 1991 after 40 yearsservice , said all three havemet people they hadn't seenfor two decades. "This is theonly place you get the chanceto meet them again ," he said.

Technologies change; affections don 'tTimes certainly have

changed and computer-basedtechnology is leading mining,and virtually every other in-dustry, into the '90s.

One thing that hasn't'changed, however, is the bondbetween former employees ofInca's Computer Systems de-partment who renewed old of-fections on the final Friday ofPensioner days at the CarusoClub in Sudbury.

'There was nothing likethat department,' recalled KayKuzniar, who retired 10 yearsago as a keypunch operator."In the keypunch room we all

,-respected one another, westud behind one another in

times and bad and wed a lot of fun."

If the rapid pace of chang-ing computer technologyseems mind boggling today. itwas no lesssoin years gone by.

"We went from punchcardtabulating equipment to per-sonal computers," said RaijaLuoma. "And as each changecame we simply went with theflow."

That ability to adapt servedthe department well saidformer systems supervisor DonDanko. "In our case, we grewwith the development of com-puting," he said.

Retirement, the gangagreed, has allowed them togrow in different directions,but thanks to events like Pen-sioner Days - never com-pletely apart.

"When it rains, all the wa-ter just pours down the rockinto the pond," said watertreatment plants supervisor EdZickar. "When this was only acreek and "we had heavyrainfalls, it frequently over-ran the treatment capabilityof the Nolin plant, So far, thisproblem " has been elimi-nated."

While the pond's surround-ings would need more green-ery to complete the'postcard'setting, Inco's environmentaleffortshave alreadyhadacon-siderable 'greening' effect on

the area. At least part of therock outcrop has been seededand fertilized through Inco'saerial seeding program.

"You can see some of thatnow," said Ed, as he pointedto large brown patches on therockface, "but In a few yearswe expect it to look a lot bet-ter."

"Appearance, however, isn'tthe only benefit of siterevegetation. "When thegrowth starts to take hold andmultiply, it will trap a lot ofthe water that today washesdown the rock," he said.

Butappearance is onlyskindeep. In fact, the water treat-ment strategy requires as littlewater in the reservoir as possi-ble.

"We need water retentioncapacity to hold the runoffwhen we get storms and heavyrainfalls," said Ed. "Thatmeans we're better off with nowater in the reservoir."

While the relatively inex-

pensive cost (about $200,000of installing the reservoirmade the project very worthwhile, the 'savings' are almosimpossible to measure. "We'ntalking about comparing dol.lars against untreated watergetting past us," said Ed"That's worth a lot more thardollars. It's hard to estimate.'

Because the pond site is ita natural basin, Iarg(amounts of silt were collectechere over the years. "The poncis on top of a huge amount o^silt," said Ed. "We had to drivEdam pilings down 60 feet tcsecure them."

Efforts to control spillage althe Nolin plant have greatl)reduced the problem over thepast five years, but it wasn'tuntil a dam was installed thatit was virtually eliminated.

Water plants operator DoucTaylor said the area looks to-tally different from what he wasused to. "I didn't know slagcould look so good," he said.

What was once one of themore unsightly Inco proper-ties has recently become aregular stop-over for geese,ducks and other birds.

"It's nice to see them landhere. It's quite a contrast fromthe surrounding slag androck," said John, who visits allthe Inca water plants on hisregular janitorial rounds. "Itkind of makes you feel goodabout our engironmental ac-complishments."

John is talking about a 22-million gallon water storagereservoir behind a new con-trol structure installed up-stream of the Nolin WasteWater Treatment Plant. Thestructure, a kind of small dam,has so far reduced to zero theincidents of untreated watergetting by the plant while giv-ing the bleak slag and blackrock outcrop surroundings adefinite facelift.

The reservoir retains waterduring heavy rainfall so thatit can be fed to the treatmentplant at controlled flow ratesthat do not overwhelm theplant and let untreated waterbypass the plant.

That's why Inco's watertreatment experts prefer thereservoir empty - and ready toaccept as much water as pos-sible.

But for John, it's the aes-thetic improvement that'smade the biggest impact. Hesaid it was the most dreary ofthe plants he'd visit. "It sure isnicer to come here now, to seethe birds land and take off,"he said. "This says somethingpositive about our environ-mental efforts. It makes youthink we are accomplishing Doug Taylor, John Behun and Ed Zkkar view surroundings that used to be black rock and slag.

Outside participation in emergencytable-top exercise is key to success

W rogram run by well-trained and highly motivatedpeople, Inco expanded its con-tinuing training program byincluding police and fire serv-ices from the community inthe latest table-top exercise --Exercise Oobleck - sponsoredby the joint Emergency Pre-paredness Task Force.

"It was excellent havingoutside agencies participatingand we plan to continue jointtraining sessions," said emer-gency preparedness coordina-tor Ellen Heale. "If we are to beeffective in our emergencypreparations, we must workclosely with our neighbors togive them the help and infor-mation they require so theycan better help us in time ofneed."

The training session, heldat Inco's Copper Cliff Club,was designed to test the abil-ity of participants to developplans, solve problems andmake decisions in critical situ-ations.

"I think everyone learns alot during these kind of exer-cises , expeciallyan apprecia^tion for the level of activityand responsibilities. After It'sover, participants take partin a debriefing where the ex-erase is reviewed and evalu-ated. It can be a real eyeopener and problems can of. ,ten be traced to, a lack ofprocedures, inadequate cotn-m unications or a host of otherchallenges."

Angele and classmateDereck Gelinas spent the after-noon with Danielle Tardif ofMines Technical Services andConstruction.

"We watched a movie aboutunderground and Danielleshowed what she does under-ground," said Angele. "She alsoshowed us maps of miningplans and procedures whichwas interesting because Ihadn't realized what it was allabout. It feels good to seewomen working under-ground."

"I explained to them howsciences and mathematics areimportant for the type of job Ido. In Grade 8 they're still quiteyoung but at least they're moreaware of the job requirementsnow than they were when theycame in."

As for as future career plans,Greg declared he has a lot oftime to make up his mind butat least he was shown whatsome people do for a living.

"I think they were quite im-pressed," said Dave, a surfacetraining instructor, of his twoyoung visitors. They asked alot of questions about educa-tional requirements and aboutadvancements in the plant interms of both people and tech-nology."

Because of a scheduleddown day at the Smelter, thestudents saw the converter aislebut were unable to see the tap-ping of matte or slag, or theturning of converters, saidDave.

He did expose them to themodernization of the plantduring a visit to the DCS roomwhere No. I and No. 2 flashfurnaces are computer moni-tored along with emissions andconverters.

"I think Career Day was agreat idea that should happenagain next year," said Dave."A lot of these youngsters knowInco makes nickel but this givesthem a better insight into ourcompany. We're not a candyfactory here, we're an indus-try. But we're a modern indus-try-and things have certainlychanged."

Career Day '95 was organ-ized by Ray Joly of Human Re-sources and Public Affairsplacement student SuzyDobinski in cooperation withthe local school boards.

The morning portion of theday was spent at the CopperCliff Club where Debi Duval-Rosato of Quality and HumanResource Development talkedto the students about security,safety, Workplace HazardousMaterial Information Sheets(WHMIS), the environment, thecompany and its history.

"From where I stand the daywas a complete success," saidChristine Morin, theGrade 8 teacher at St.Augustin School.

"Before going to Inco thestudents thought they kneweverything there was to knowabout mining. However, thereaction I got after the CareerDay was that they had not re-alized the complexity of suchan enterprise and how manydifferent types of jobs were re-lated to mining.

"All the students were im-pressed with their mentorsand all enjoyed the morningpresentation. It really madethem feel that people atInco have a sincere interest inhelping them make a wisecareer choice."

new golf tour for youthwill do for that sport

what the highly successful22-year-old Inco Cup - thelongest-running corporateskiing sponsorship in NorthAmerica - has done foryoungnorthern skiers.

"We believe this programwill take junior golf in North-ern Ontario to a higher leveljust like Kate Pace and theKreiner sisters who came tonational prominence afteryears on the Inco Cup cir-cuit," said Inco's Ontario Di-vision president Jim Ashcroft."We may see some of Cana-da's top new golfers gradu-ate from this tour."

Inco and the Northern On-tario Professional Golfers' As-sociation joined in the effortto attract more young play-ers to golf and to provide anadded boost for some 1,200young golfers in 30 clubs fromWawa to Noranda, Que.

Called the Inco NorthernOntario Junior Golf Tour, itwill be open to male andfemales who play at partici-pating clubs in the NorthernGolf Association.

The tour opens in BlindRiver on June 28.

Tom Clark, NOPGA proat the Cedar Green Golf Clubin Garson, said the tour an-swers the increased demandfrom golf clubs across thenorth for their junior maleand female golfers to gaincompetitive experience.

"We believe this is a tre-mendous way to expose moreyoung players to golf," Mr.Clark who is chair of the jun-ior golf tour.

Tony Evershed, NOPGApro at Sudbury's IdylwyldeGolf and Country Club, saidthe tour provides young ath-letes the opportunity to de-velop both as athletes andindividuals.

Ontario Hydro sells approximately $80 million of electricity to Inco ayear. There has been a concentrated effort by both companies to maxi-mize the efficiency of Inco's consumption. The customer Service Divisionhas been created to assist customers like Inco with their cost reductionefforts. There are several categories of technical services that are availablefrom Ontario Hydro:

1. Basic Energy Measurements:Without interrupting the power to the customer's process, provide

real time measurement of current, voltage, power factor, frequency andenergy.

2. Load Monitoring:Load monitoring can be accommodated on single pieces of equip-

ment or entire processes. Most instrumentation can be accommodated(e.g. pressure, temperature, electrical parameters, etc.) Studies of variouslength (e.g. pressure, temperature, electrical parameters, etc.) and studiesof various length (e.g. days, weeks, months) and time base (e.g. 1, 5, 15-minute data) can be performed. Typical loads that have been studiedinclude: ventilation fans, cooling tower fans and pumps, compressors andblowers, pumping and dewatering systems, electrical distribution, crush-ers and conveyors, hoisting equipment.

3. Power QualityThe use of electronic equipment that is sensitive to poor power quality

has increased in recent years. Metering services are available to assist withthe identification of power quality programs. Specifically, the followingcan be investigated: harmonics, voltage sags and surges, short durationoutages, impulses and general disturbances.

40 Years AgoInco's second most important product, copper, reaches the consumerin

many different shapes and sizes, said the Triangle, and is used to makemany different products.

Transported as blister copper in a molten state in hot metal cars to theCopper Refinery, it is processed to a purity of 99.98 per cent plus beforebeing melted again and cast into a variety of forms.

The most common is the horizontal cast wire bar, which fabricates rollinto rod, then draws it into wire. Larger cross-section wire bars are rolledinto thin metal strips, which are then used in the manufacturing ofindustrial electrical equipment.

Other refined copper products consumed by manufacturers are cokes,billets, silver-bearing cakes, cathodes, ingots and copper shot.

Cakes are primarily rolled into sheet copper while billets are extrudedthrough dies to form various sizes of seamless pipe.

Silver-bearing cakes are rolled into special sheets which are used byphoto-engravers and for the fabrication of automobile radiators.

Cathodes are used mainly for alloying purposes, as are ingots, andcopper shot is used by the chemical industry.

Sudbury district functioning efficiently, it was one of the biggest mainte-nance organizations in the world and it was responsible for servicingmining , metallurgical and auxiliary equipment ranging all the way from200-ton underground crushers to delicate electronic instruments andcontrols.

Supported by a staff group of 100, planned maintenance was dividedInto 10 ' line' groups comprised of superintendents, general foremen,foremen and tradesmen, each with its own supporting staff of chiefmaintenance planner, zone planner, preventive maintenance coordina-

tars, materials coordinators, schedulers and clerks.To cope with a flood of new techniques, equipment and increased

production demands resulting from huge expansion programs, the pla nnedmaintenance system had been organized three years before.

Completely new approaches and sweeping changes had to he made tolong- established practices and attitudes, but Inco maintenance wasresponding well to the challenge, said the article.

Through more formalized planning, scheduling and preventive main-tenance , better use was being made of the huge store of knowledge andexperience and the supervisory and trade skills of maintenance planning,even though all benefits had not yet been realized.

15 Years AgoMore than 100 athletes from throughout Northern Ontario partici-

pated in the first Northern Ontario Regional Games for the PhysicallyDisabled ever held in Sudbury at Laurentian University between May 23and May 25.

Sudbury athletes did themselves proud in many events. Danny Boucher,a 21- year-old wheelchair athlete who could bench press more than 400pounds, won five gold medals in his specialties in class three: shot-put,javelin , discus, basketball and, of course, weightlifting.

Other Sudbury athletes who rose to the challenge were Andre Martel,a class four athlete, took home a gold medal in the javelin, a gold inwheelchair basketball and a silver in weightlifting; and Rick Prudhomme,who came third in class two weightlifting and struck gold in shotput andjavelin.

All the athletes were looking forward to the provincial games later that-summer in Sault Ste Marie, and for those who were good enough, thenational championships and the world games.

It's . almost like entering another world.The old Electrolytic Nickel Refinery is in the decommissioning process and

safety is paramount in everyone's mind. Ever since in the spring of 1993, crewshave done a great job removing old tanks, cleaning up hazardous areas andsafely removing and recovering the contents according to environmentalstandards.

The safety precautions have paid off. There have been no on-the-jobinjuries since the process began.

A new fire break corridor, one of the major objectives of the project, has nowbeen completed. This access corridor, combined with the new cement block firewall, ensures the safety of the operational Cobalt Hydrate Plant in the eventof an emergency.

Everything next to the plant, explains team leader Nick Markovich, hasbeen gutted two bays wide and three stories high, leaving only the structuralsteel. Emergency vehicles can also gain access to this corridor through largedoors which open on to Davis Street.

This has also been a busy spring for the Cobalt Refinery Product Actionteam which has produced good ideas now making a difference in safety andproduction quality. They are changing the gas pump in the de-gassing kilncircuit.

The gas pump, explains team leader Rod Skelton, is used to circulate inertgases through the cooling chamber to cool the cobalt rounds before discharg-ing. Existing pumps have seals that wear easily, causing air leakage which,

in turn, can cause cobalt to discolor due to oxidation. The proposed gas pump,however, has seals that can be purged with inert gases. Thus any leakage will notdiscolor the product.

But this isn't their only success storyThe team, which began working together last December of, has already made

a difference in the packing area. Following an ergonomics study of the area. anew chair was installed and the chute redesigned to make the work environmentsafer and more-efficient for the operator.

The teams next step is to examine how to provide better ergonomic seatingin the Cobalt Refining overhead crane.

The members of the Cobalt Product Action Team are Ray Alexander, MauriceBeauregard, Paul Dion, Bill Jennings, Bill Kromkamp, Jim Orosz, Rodney Skelton(team leader), Al Smith, Dave Souder and ergonomics student Teresa Chan.

Into Port Colborne also extends d warm welcome to their two new summer co-op students. Chan is an ergonomics student who will continue the work of LoraBruyn. Sabena Butt is an engineering student working on a special project onutilities upgrading.

With summer just around the corner, administration's Bob Reyburn hascompiled some more tips on cycling safety from the Highway Traffic Act tipshighlighted steps motorists should take in order to ease the potential of automo-bile and bicycle accidents.

Investments and Taxes'Marginal tax rate'. 'After tax income'. These are phrases that are heard

often when radio columnists discuss decisions about how and where to put yourmoney. Everyone seems to assume we all know what they mean. And who wantsto ask the obvious question?

Investment decisions based solely on tax issues are usually not the mostprofitable decisions. However, tax issues need to be considered when making aninvestment decision.

I'm going to start by defining each of these terms, and then look at what effecttax considerations have and why on investment choices for someone living inOntario.

Marginal Tax RateSimply put, marginal tax rate is the percentage of each extra dollar you earn

that goes to taxes. In Canada, there are three graduated levels of basic federaltax rates. This means that the first $30,000 or so of income is taxed at one rate,the next $ 30,000 at a higher rate and any additional income at an even higherrate. Then there are other federal and provincial taxes based on this basicfederal rate. If your taxable income is in the mid-range, between $30,000 and$60,000, then for 1994 you paid 44 per cent income tax on every dollar oftaxable income over $30,000.

After Tax IncomeAfter tax income is the other side of the coin. It is the additional income that

is yours after all the income tax has been paid. In the case of the example I'musing, it is 56 percent. However, all income is not the same and after tax incomecan vary depending on the type of income you are earning. This is where theinvestment decision takes tax issues into account.

There are three basic types of investment income: interest, dividends andcapital gains. The same amount of cash received from each of them gives a widevariety of after tax income.

Why don't we just invest in items that pay dividends? The reasons for invest-ment choices are as diverse as the people making investment decisions. Incomeis just that, it is the money you money earns.

interestInterest income is usually thought to be very safe and sure. You lend your

money and the borrower pays you for the privilege of using it. If the amount you'lend'is less than $60,000 per bank or trust company, then your principal isinsured even if the borrower goes out of business. Because interest is closest toa Isure thing', the return is lower, and the government does not encourage youto have your money working this way. Businesses, and banks have an obliga-tion to pay interest. This obligation does not apply to dividends or capital gains.

Capital GainsCapital Gains income is often thought of as insecure and speculative. Once

the investment is`made, earning Capital Gains is beyond the control of theindividual investor. You buy shares and then the value of the whole companymay increase because of market forces, good management or product demand.You have nothing to do with this. The reason for a higher after tax income onCapital Gains than on interest is the desire of government to encourage this typeof investment, and a recognition of the greater uncertainty of increased income.

DividendsDividends, the payments to shareholders, have the highest after tax income.

One reason for this is that when the corporation pays dividends it pays themafter it has paid tax on its profits. If there weren't some incentive for investors,the money paid out in dividends would be taxed twice. Only dividends paid byCanadian corporations are given this treatment. Dividends paid by othercorporations are treated more like interest income. Another reason for thehigher after tax income is that the government would like us to invest inCanadian corporations, and the way the dividends are treated for tax purposesis an incentive to encourage this. Once again, there is more risk in buying sharesthat pay dividends than in investing to earn interest. Companies pay interestbefore they pay dividends, and amounts borrowed are repaid beforeshareholdersget their investment back.

The difference in after tax income reflects the difference in the risk level of thethree types on investment income . It also reflects the government's encourage-ment of some kinds of investments over others. Should you invest only in scaresfor the dividends? Your best choice is probably a balance to earn all three typesof income. The safety of interest, and the potential for higher after tax incomeof dividends and capital gains.

"When we come to the end of life , the question will be,'How much have you given ?' not 'How much have you gotten?'

Large corporate donations always grab the headlines. But it is oftenthe smaller, less newsworthy contribution that conveys the breadth of acompany's commitment to improving the quality of life in a community.

Three recent partnerships with outside non-profit groups and charitiesunderscore the social role in the Sudhury region played by Inco and itsemployees every week of the year.

It was not unexpected that neighbors would get upset when theSudhury and District Association for Community Living decided to openits second group home for developmentally handicapped adults inWalden.

After all, it took a while for the neighborhood to embrace the firstgroup home in Lively when it opened in 1990.

"The move out here in the country kind of got people on the edge,"says Corey Doherty , the association 's manager of residential services."They weren 't sure what to expect, what it all meant. So, naturally, wehad lots of questions , lots of concerns coming out."

But five years in town creating a rapport with the high school . banks,public literary, neighbors and even the local politicians helped.

One of the first things they planned in the new co-ed home was anOpen House in May for neighbors and friends . A steady stream of visitorshighlighted by Walden Mayor Terry Kett toured the home and met thefive adults who range in ages from 19 to 64.

"Since then , everything 's been just fabulous and the neighbors arewonderful ," says Corey.

At the time , she showed off two new bedrooms converted from a one-car garage in the modem bungalow . Inca's annual donation paid for therenovations.

"I know the addition has helped solve some internal problems withspace. With two more rooms , people aren 't in each other 's face so much.So it's really good for them ," she adds.

Cush donations are fine. Yet it's the passion and the purpose of Incopeople behind the scenes that so often make a special event memorable.

Take the initial running of the Inco Walden Firecracker 5 km RoadRace.

If it hears any resemblance to the old Onaping summer run, then it'sdeliberate. That's because the folks behind the run are the same.

Slated for Saturday, July 1 from the St. James School in Lively, the run,like Onaping's, is the brainchild of Ron Poirier , a buyerwith Purchasing,Warehousing and Traffic.

A competitive runner himself, Ron is transplanting the run to Livelywhere he now lives and is marketing the day, with Inco as a majorsponsor, as a family and fitness attraction.

"The work is well worth it," he says of the day that features theKinsmen 5KM family walk, Sling-Choker's 1 km children's fun run andthe Inco race. "We want to promote the day as a fitness rather than acompetitive day. We want to reach the kids so that fitness becomes a wayof life."

Fora first event, Ron is hoping to attract 100 runners, 150 walkers andabout 75 children.

Inco runners expected for the race portion include Willy Metson ofDivisional Shops, Bill Narasnek of North Mine, Vince Perdue of Millsand Transportation, Paul Groves of Purchasing, Warehousing andTraffic and Paddy Walsh of Frood-Stobie.

In 1996, Bruce Mines celebrates the 150th anniversary of its originsas the first copper mining town in Canada.

For six years, a hardy band of volunteers calling themselves theCopper Town Committee has been building a mining/tourism display otfHighway 17 at Bruce Mines to commemorate the community's miningheritage.

One part of the display features historical mining equipment such asa Jacobs Hammer Mill, a Fraser & Chalmers jaw crusher and two slusherswith scrapers.

The other revives one of the original Bruce Mine workings which wasknown in the 1840s as Simpson's Shaft (named after George Simpson,governor of the Hudson Bay Company at the time). There, they have

constructed a horse whim for raising the ore , an open log headframe anda small shack for displaying maps, tools, rock and mineral specimens.

There are two Inco ties to Bruce Mines today, one historical, the othercontemporary.

Owned by the Mond Nickel Company in 1915, Bruce Mines was deeded15 years later to the International Nickel Company of Canada in Sudhurywhich took much of Bruce Mines material as flux ore.

For the mining equipment display, the organizers heard that, as partof Inca's decommissioning and reclamation efforts, we'd come across asteam-driven water pump and a steam-driven mine hoist at the oldSultana Mine.

After shopping it around to no interest in Sudbury, the company giftedthe equipment to the Copper Town Committee. True to their resourcefulways, they came to Sudbury with a five-ton truck to get it on display for thesummer tourist season.

"The whole project hasn't cost the community anything," says RandySweetman , a business consultant on the committee. "We're recreating atypical 1848 mining display and we're doing it all through volunteers. Forwhat we've done so far, we figure it would cost well over $1 million."

Sweetman, incidentally, came to Bruce Mines via Voisey Bay where hehad been mayor of the nearby community of Nain and director ofcommunity development for the Labrador Inuit Association.

He went to Nain a single man and left in late 1986 married."The long winters were really enjoyable. I used to travel the coastline

by skidoo from Nain to Goose Bay, 1,000 kilometres return, depending onthe route you took and if there was open water," he recalls. "Wintersweren 'tthat long, broken up by caribou hunting and greatspring fishing."

Whatever happened to.. ?Charlie Quinn is a voice out of the blue. When last we heard of the 40-

year Creighton Mine veteran, he was wintering in Florida. Seventeenwinters straight until he took a break the last two years. Still hale andhearty at 78, Charlie is a safety man from way hack and called in abouta recent Incontact TV show featuring Divisional Shops . He was curiouswhy employees weren't wearing hard hats. Charlie, who retired in 1976,should be happy to know that hard hats aren't required in the shops sincethere's no danger of being hit from overhead ...There are moments whenDavid Butcher , who retired in 1991 as a construction leader with 27 years'service, would like be back at work at the Frood-Stobie complex since hemisses his buddies and Inco. Busy with spring cleaning and pointing,David says he's in fine health ...Neil Feeley didn't take long to settle intoretirement. Superintendent of Smelter Services, Neil just retired lost ve arafter 30 years with Inca and immediately took to the rood. First come ajaunt to Nova Scotia last spring and then came a western adventure toVancouver and Alaska. His first winter on pension was spentat McClellandArena pumping iron, jogging the streets in the South End, curling withInco pensioners, swimming at the Dow pool and studying computers atCambrian. He's probably on the road again to Nova Scotia.. . Beforecalling it a day in 1991, Manfred Baader was a senior estimator withGeneral Engineering going on 21 years. Now, Manfred is occupied withstained glass work and woodworking in the winter and golfing off with hisfriends come summer ...Thomas Scobie was a switchman for 23 years atthe Creighton Complex when he chose to retire in 1991. For Thomas.retirement means not having to plan anything. He keeps old age at bayby staying active at the YMCA and taking up karate. He also has shortvisits in mind for family hack in Temiskaminq and in Oakville ...For 19years, Sue Flynn was head cook at the Copper Cliff 1 tub. Four years innlo,Sue retired and only recently has she gotten into the swing of retirementlife. Her days are now filled with babysitting and taking neighborsshopping... Now, he wishes everyone could goon retirement. Bill, whose only complaint is that he no longer receivesdouble time or holiday pay, keeps busy doing odd jobs around the houseand some travelling.
