By giving an overview of a section of an epoch, and of defined topics from politics, culture, economy, and society, the lecture introduces students to the study of ancient history. In the seminar, principles, methods and tools of ancient history are taught through precise examples.

Lecture: written examination (60 min) or oral exam (15 min) as decided by the lecturer at the beginning of the course. Introductory Seminar: written examination (90 min) or source analysis (10,000-12,000 characters) as decided by the lecturer at the beginning of the course. Every module component must be passed. Module component retake examination: Retake of failed exam (60 min.) or oral exam (15 min.); revision of source analysis within 14 days. Module-retake examination: If several module-component retake examinations are not passed, there will be a final module retake examination in the form of a written examination of 60 minutes or term paper decided by the lecturer at the beginning of the course.

Final mark The final mark is made up of 100% of the mark from the written examination and the source analysis. The performance in the lecture is assessed as “passed/not passed”.

By giving an overview of a section of an epoch as well as of a selected topic from politics, culture, econ-omy and society, the lecture gives an introduction to medieval history. In the seminar, through a concrete theme, students will practice skills, independently work on questions, and answer them in a methodically and subject-appropriate manner. In source-based exercises, the principles of source criticism as well as handling of different medieval source types will be practiced. The students should gain insight into historical auxiliary sciences (such as palaeography, diplomacy, sphragistics, chronology, etc.) in order to become qualified to work with medie-val sources.
