2nd Sunday of Easter– Divine Mercy Sunday April 8, 2018

The Pastor’s Keyboard—Msgr. Richard Huneger First Reading: Acts 4:32-35

Responsorial: Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24

Second Reading: 1 John 5:1-6

Gospel: John 20:19-31

“You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are

those who have not seen me, but still believe!”

. St Joseph School has seen a lot of good things happening this year. Major changes in cars or computers are often "under the hood," and only indirectly noticeable from how things behave at the "what you see is what you get" level. So too in this case. During the last year Principal Deb Dewar has spearheaded the 2018 Catholic School Accreditation Process at St Joseph, just as she did at Sacred Heart in Medford in 2016-17, before coming to us. It's a lot of work. She has tackled 2012 Accreditation Report Recommendations, including bringing intervention skills on board for children needing extra help, tightening the bolts in the Math curriculum for better follow-through in scope and sequence, and overhauling the writing component of Language Arts (new 6+1 Traits Writing Pro-gram, November 2017). Being an educator means constantly being faced with a moving target as the surrounding culture, family systems, and demographics, continue to change. The School has also strengthened its Religious Formation efforts, 1) continuing the Faith and Life curriculum that has been in place for some years, 2) supporting our wonderful Morning Prayer service held each day at 8:10am in church (but Mass on Wednesdays), and 3) welcoming Sister Raquel and Sister Martha, as well as Fr John Arcidiacono, for classroom visitation on Thursday mornings. Scheduling is one of the trickiest things for a principal, who has to keep so many irons in the fire from stepping on each other's toes. So many minutes are to be devoted to each subject area per day, per week, varying by grade. This year school begins at 8:00am (15 minutes earlier than before), to meet these require-ments, but ends at the same time as previously. Because of 20 years of teaching at Sacred Heart in Medford at the Middle School level, our prin-cipal has had a lot of experience with this new part of our program. She has a heart for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). In 2014 we began adding Grade 7, then 8, but Grades 7-8 were in the upper classrooms in the Gym – in 1956, 1st Grade classrooms! Last Fall all grades and programs (except P.E.) were consolidated into the main school building, along with a dedicated Science Lab (funded by Salem Catholic Schools Foundation, and St Joseph School Auction generosity). Classroom grouping enabled easy access by all grades to the Lab, and better opportunities for interaction among faculty. Figuring this out was not easy. The Lab is getting equipped with Chemistry and other modules (more to come). Meanwhile, several Strategic Planning Committees have been brainstorming. One of those com-mittees is the Tech Committee. A complete overhaul and re-integration of the Technology program is being undertaken and rolled out for pilot testing this Spring and tweaking this Summer. We will be heavily integrating use of technology into classroom assignments in all subject areas, using a new curriculum, starting with the Sacred Heart, Medford, K-8 program, tweaked according to Archdioce-san Guidelines and Oregon School Library Information Literacy Standards, and borrowing ideas from a New York K-12 Technology "encyclopedia." This huge project needed help. * Salem Catholic Schools Foundation (2017) funded, among other things, the $16,500 expansion of high-bandwidth wireless block wide (everyone can log on, no hickups), and purchase of 50 new ChromeBooks for one-on-one all-day every-day use by Middle School Students; existing Chrome-Books (also funded by SCSF two years ago) will hand-me-down to Grades 3-5 for use as needed during the day in-classroom. Grades K-2 will continue to use the Media Lab desktops for basic intro-ductory skills. This grant also pays for ChromeCast units connected to all digital projectors, making them all wirelessly accessible. The SCSF Grants in 2016 and 2017 also paid for the polished con-crete flooring (hallways) and new tile flooring (classrooms) to replace the old asbestos layers of flooring beneath, and the aging carpet above, throughout the school. * Salem Catholic Schools Foundation (2018), $113,673, has blessed us with $12,500 to com-pletely replace the over-20-year-old network wiring, for greater basic system stability, not to mention with $68,182 to replace the ancient fire-alarm system, as required by the Fire Marshall, and $32,991 to replace and repair a failing section of roofing (south end of building). * JSK-Tech is donating new faculty computers for Grades 1-6. A Major Gift ($20,000) is letting us get needed new Science Textbooks ($17,000), and miscellaneous printers, cables, a few document cameras, some needed SSDs and DVD units for the new faculty boxes, etc. ($3,000). It is breathtaking to consider how much has been accomplished in just a few months! Still need-ed: a charging cart (for ChromeBooks), and Gym Stage Wireless Sound system for Drama. Any takers out there, who might want to polish the apple and put it on the Principal's Desk?

This campaign connects people with Christ, here and around the world in developing countries,

through the internet, television, ra-dio, and print media. And fifty per-

cent of funds collected remain in our diocese to fund local communica-tions efforts. Your support helps spread the gospel message! To

St. Joseph Parish Religious Education The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A) is the process for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacra-ments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The parish community is encouraged to invite those interested to explore this process, and also to support them in prayer as they continue in this spiritual journey with Jesus Christ and His Church. Anyone interested in becoming Catholic may attend these meetings during the year to learn more information about the RCIA process and the Catholic faith. Contact the parish office for further information.

Week of April 8 – Divine Mercy YouCat: Question 327 – How can the common good be promoted? Question: How long is the Easter Season? Virtue: Tolerance Saint: Faustina Faith Tid-Bit: God’s merciful love is the Good News of the Gospel, and the reason why Christ suffered, died and rose again. The Catechism goes so far as to say that, “The Gospel is the revelation in Jesus Christ of God’s mercy to sinners” (CCC 1846). God’s mercy reached down to us in our sinful state and sent us a Savior, who took on human flesh so that we might have life with him. -Formed.org

BUILDING A CULTURE OF VOCATIONS THE SECRET OF A VOCATION, Pope Benedict XVI told youth, “lies in the capacity and in the joy of distinguishing [God’s]

voice, of listening to and following His voice. But to do this, it is necessary to accustom our heart ot recognize the Lord, to hear Him like a person who is near me and who loves me.” Moments of “interior silence in the day-to-day routine” are essential, he

said. “But once one has learned to hear this voice and to gener-ously follow it, one fears nothing, he or she knows and feels

that God is with him or her, and that He is a Friend, Father, and Brother.”

Amigo, Padre y Hermano".
