HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 2

WELCOME BACK

I have waited so long to have you return to Mass. On behalf of each of our clergy team, we are most delightful that everyone will gradually be returning to worship together.

Throughout the COVID – 19 lockdown you have been wonderful about sharing with us your views how we should move forward. I personally appreciated hearing from so many of you about how you were doing. Your personal notes in your contribution envelopes, your cards, letters, the many, many emails and phone calls meant so much to me. I am glad a lot of parish-ioners acknowledged how important it was to me that somehow as many of us could stay con-nected during the challenging times we faced. Life seldom gives us a chance to recognize someone who influences us deeply. That was a blessing for many of us during the isolation to have a solemn time to reflect on how much we all truly mean to each other. Father John, Father Steve, Deacon Bill and April and Deacon John and Suzan want you to know how grateful we are to have you in our lives.

Welcome back to God’s House. Welcome back to our home where we encounter the Lord together. Your presence with our new parish family is nothing less than a blessing to us!

The Most Blessed Trinity

The central mystery of the Christian faith and life is the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity. Every Christian is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Blessed Trinity is known deepest when truly encountered within a disciple’s soul. How can this encounter happen?

1. Everything is possible for one who believes, still more for one who hopes and even more for one who loves.

2. We must keep our eyes fixed on God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit in everything we say, do, or undertake.

3. The holiest, most ordinary, and most necessary practice of the spiritual life is that of the loving presence of God.

4. Take full delight in and become accustomed to God Trinitarian, divine company, speaking humbly and conversing lovingly with God all the time, especially in times of temptation, suffering, aridity, weariness, and even infidelity and sin.

5. Withdraw from the external from time to time to adore God within and just enjoy the Trinity’s divine presence in peace for a few minutes each day.

Reopening our Churches AT THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE COVID -19 SAFETY TEAM

FATHER JOE HAS APPROVED THE FOLLOWING:

Please note: The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in effect.

All regularly scheduled Masses in our grouping began being offered publicly Monday, June 1. At this time, for your safety and because we cannot provide adequate sanitizing staff yet, we are still requesting that all Masses will be limited to 25 attendees per Mass. In order to attend a particular Mass, you MUST sign up to a list at SignupGenius.com and choose the Mass you would like to attend or call Greg at 412-661-0187, ext 113. For couples or family members who plan to at-tend as a group…PLEASE use a line for EACH family member so we can keep an accurate count for each Mass This is subject to change as we become more accustomed to know how to best handle larg-er crowds in our church buildings. Until further notice, the restrooms in our churches will not be available for use. We are very excited to welcome our parishioners back to our beautiful churches for Holy Mass but we want to be absolutely certain we do not overextend our capabilities. We are planning to learn from week one and proceed accordingly with government, diocesan and parish guidelines. Your patience is very much appreciated as these Masses fill up to capacity. Masses will continue to be streamed for home viewing if you are not able to attend one of these public Masses. Be aware that the churches are going to look a little different with signs and tape to direct you. There will be designated areas in each church for each individual Mass and you will be guided by an ap-pointed trained usher to that area upon entering the church. Daily Masses at Sacred Heart are in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 12:05PM. Daily Masses at St. Raphael are at 9:00AM except Wednesday at 7:00PM. The weekend schedule is as follow: At St. Raphael, 4:00PM on Saturday and 9:00AM and 11:00Am on Sunday At Sacred Heart, 4:30PM on Saturday and 9:00AM, 11:30AM and 7:45PM on Sunday. If you have any doubts about your physical condition, PLEASE for your safety and the safety of oth-ers, take advantage of the live stream!

We are doing our best to keep you as informed as possible about what’s going on in our parishes as we move toward our merge date in January 2021. We are continuing to publish all articles that are submitted and approved in our weekly bulletin. We realize that this is quite a bit of information, and so we leave it up to you as the reader to decide what you want to know. Thank you!

HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 4

Statement of U.S. Bishop Chairmen in Wake of Death of George Floyd and National Protests

May 29, 2020 WASHINGTON – Seven U.S. bishop chairmen of committees within the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have issued a statement in the wake of the death of Mr. George Floyd and the protests which have broken out in Minneapolis and in other cities in the United States. Bishop Shelton J. Fabre of Houma-Thibodaux, chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism; Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church; Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development; Arch-bishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities; Bishop Joseph C. Bambera of Scranton, chairman of the Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs; Bishop Da-vid G. O’Connell, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, chairman of the Subcommittee on the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; and Bishop Joseph N. Perry, auxiliary bishop of Chicago, chairman of the Subcommittee on African American Affairs have issued the following statement: We are broken-hearted, sickened, and outraged to watch another video of an African American man being killed before our very eyes. What’s more astounding is that this is happening within mere weeks of several other such oc-currences. This is the latest wake-up call that needs to be answered by each of us in a spirit of determined conver-sion. Racism is not a thing of the past or simply a throwaway political issue to be bandied about when convenient. It is a real and present danger that must be met head on. As members of the Church, we must stand for the more difficult right and just actions instead of the easy wrongs of indifference. We cannot turn a blind eye to these atroci-ties and yet still try to profess to respect every human life. We serve a God of love, mercy, and justice. While it is expected that we will plead for peaceful non-violent protests, and we certainly do, we also stand in pas-sionate support of communities that are understandably outraged. Too many communities around this country feel their voices are not being heard, their complaints about racist treatment are unheeded, and we are not doing enough to point out that this deadly treatment is antithetical to the Gospel of Life. As we said eighteen months ago in our most recent pastoral letter against racism, Open Wide Our Hearts, for peo-ple of color some interactions with police can be fraught with fear and even danger. People of good conscience must never turn a blind eye when citizens are being deprived of their human dignity and even their lives. Indiffer-ence is not an option. “As bishops, we unequivocally state that racism is a life issue.” We join Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis in praying for the repose of the soul of Mr. George Floyd and all others who have lost their lives in a similar manner. We plead for an end to the violence in the wake of this tragedy and for the victims of the rioting. We pray for comfort for grieving families and friends. We pray for peace across the United States, particularly in Minnesota, while the legal process moves forward. We also anticipate a full investigation that results in rightful accountability and actual justice. We join our brother bishops to challenge everyone to come together, particularly with those who are from different cultural backgrounds. In this encounter, let us all seek greater understanding amongst God’s people. So many peo-ple who historically have been disenfranchised continue to experience sadness and pain, yet they endeavor to perse-vere and remain people of great faith. We encourage our pastors to encounter and more authentically accompany them, listen to their stories, and learn from them, finding substantive ways to enact systemic change. Such encoun-ters will start to bring about the needed transformation of our understanding of true life, charity, and justice in the United States. Hopefully, then there will be many voices speaking out and seeking healing against the evil of rac-ism in our land. As we anticipate the Solemnity of Pentecost this weekend, we call upon all Catholics to pray and work toward a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for a supernatural desire to rid ourselves of the harm that bias and prejudice cause. We call upon Catholics to pray to the Holy Spirit for the Spirit of Truth to touch the hearts of all in the United States and to come down upon our criminal justice and law enforcement systems. Finally, let each and every Catholic, regardless of their ethnicity, beg God to heal our deeply broken view of each other, as well as our deeply broken society.

THE TRAGIC EVENTS OF THIS PAST WEEK We cannot and will not ignore the tragic death of George Floyd. Silence is not an option. While we call for calm and non-violence, we also condemn hate in all its forms and stand together as Catholics to end injustice.

Please take time to read the Statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop Chairmen in the Wake of the Death of George Floyd and National Protests.

WHILE YOU WERE AWAY!

It was remarkable that our pastoral staff was able to accomplish as much as they did while you were away, and they were working from home. Our parishes have entered the Technology Age more than we ever imagined we would. As a means of updating you and staying accountable to you, we want to list the many projects that were completed or advanced while you were away. Although many parishioners are well aware of the items listed below, we feel it is im-portant to bring everyone up to date about them. If you have any questions or need for clarifi-cation, please do not hesitate to let us know by contacting our staff at [email protected] or call 412-661-0187. Someone will be happy to assist you.

Hearts on Fire for Christ

Our On Mission Pastoral Council will begin the preliminary process of defining our new parish vision and mission. Our vision and mission are meant to show who we are at heart, a people on fire for Christ and His Gospel. Some ways of passing on the fire for Christ in a substantial way include:

1. Initiate Alpha Method for Evangelization 2. Design a Plan for Vibrant Sunday Liturgy 3. Create Unity by Sharing Renewed Spiritual Vigor, Volunteers and Build-

ings and Resources 4. Conduct a Parish Week-long Mission 5. Establish Family Catechesis 6. Establish an Early Childhood Development Center at Saint Raphael

Campus 7. Add Ministries of Outreach 8. Create Alliances with Ecumenical and Community Agencies 9. Restart Neighborhood Food Bank 10. Develop a Transparent Communications Plan to Ensure Ongoing Finan-

cial Stability

As usual, feel free to approach your Pastoral Council members if you have ideas about our parish vision and mission or any other ways our parish can become more like Christ.

St. Raphael – Sacred Heart Faith Formation Announcement for First Communion

After many weeks of prayer and expectation, we are delighted to announce the celebration of First Communion. Next Sunday, June 14 and Sunday, June 21 [at 2:00 pm] there are the two special Masses for the children and their immediate families at Sacred Heart Church. The current guidelines for safety – as given in “Moving Forward Together” – for example “social distancing” and masks – will be carefully followed. Nevertheless, these will be glorious days of rejoicing. On Saturday morn-ing June 13 and June 20, parents and children will gather in Sacred Heart Church for immediate prep-aration. Some parents have requested an individual First Communion due to health concerns. For families who wish to wait a little longer, a First Communion will take place in September.

There are 43 children from St Raphael - Sacred Heart and 8 from other parishes who are in-cluded at this Banquet of Life. The incomprehensible love of Jesus the Good Shepherd reaches out to each child and each family!

We are grateful to the teachers, catechists, aides and all who have worked behind the scenes to make these festive days possible!

From Sacred Heart Elementary School: Kate Taylor – principal, April Hahn and Erica Acklin – teachers

From St. Raphael – Sacred Heart Faith Formation: Michael Steich – catechist, Marta Pecina, Isabel Volpe and Sofia Volpe – aides

SOLEMN CLOSING OF THE SAINT ANTHONY NOVENA

Tuesday, June 9, 2020. This week we will conduct the closing services of our Novena to the Beloved Saint of Padua. It has been quite an unusual year for us who make this annual devotion. Thanks to livestreaming, more people than ever joined us for the Novena, so this was a blessing from heaven. We are very happy so many were able to do this.

This Tuesday evening Saint Raphael Church will be open for the Novena. Please be careful if you will attend. The church will be safely sanitized and prepared. All the CDC guidelines must be followed. At the same time, we will livestream as usual.

For those who attend in church, we will provide blessed Saint Anthony bread. The priest or seminarian will distribute the bread while wearing plastic gloves. Each small loaf will be packages in a plastic bag. This year, we are not able to distribute any bread made by our parishioners. All the bread will be pur-chased from a bakery. If a parishioner wants the priest to bless their own homemade bread, they must keep the basket in the pew with them and the priest will bless the bread from the altar. Thank you for your understanding.

To Live Stream the Novena, you need to click on the following link and connect to your own Facebook Ac-count: https://www.facebook.com/105616694431715/live/ If you do not have a Facebook account you can use this Facebook Login information: User Name: pghstream-ing, Password: shsr2020 You will find the Novena Prayers on our website at the following link: https://bestpghparish.org/saint-anthony-novena

7 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

Congratulations to our Graduating High School Seniors!

Come and see the beautiful sign at the entrance of both Churches!!

Who is Saint Barnabas

Saint Barnabas was born in Cyprus. His Jewish parents called him Joseph. According to the tradition of the early Christians, he is among those commissioned by Jesus to preach. He is therefore one of the prominent Christian disciples in Jerusalem and was given the honorary title of Apos-tle (Acts 14:14). Together with Paul, he undertook missionary journeys, making many converts. Barnabas appears mainly in Acts of the Apostles, and Paul mentions him in some of his epistles. Acts 11:24 describes him as "a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith". Barnabas participated in the Council of Jerusalem, which dealt with the admission of Gentiles into the Christian community, a crucial problem in early Christianity. Paul and Barnabas proposed that Gentiles be allowed into the community without being circumcised. Christian tradition holds that Barnabas was martyred at Salamis, Cyprus and the founder of the Cypriot Orthodox Church. Most of the time, Barna-bas is identified as the cousin of Mark the Evangelist. His feast day is cele-brated on June 11.

Thank You Councilwoman Deb Gross June 1, 2020

Dear Councilwoman Gross:

Thank you and your staff for the support you gave to the Sacred Heart Ele-mentary School eighth grade graduates’ parade on May 29, 2020.

Without your help, this wonderful event would never have happened. I am personally grateful, and I know I speak for all our School Community in express-ing our gratitude.

I will acknowledge your help in our parish bulletin which is currently reaching about 1000 families online.

Please know of my support for you too. Truly yours, Reverend Joseph M. Mele Administrator

If you need to schedule a Mass Intention, please call Barb at 412-661-3100, ext 110. Each weekday Mass that is concelebrated by our priests can have up to three Mass intentions (one for each priest to offer). If you take a look at our Mass intentions list for the week, you will notice that we have many openings since no day this week has three intentions. While we work on pinpointing our new Mass schedule, we realize that scheduling Sunday Masses may be a bit trickier at this time, but many weekday Masses are still available. Please contact Barb at 412-661-3100, ext. 110 if you wish to schedule a Mass intention.
