TO everyoneaccording to their abilities

Repairing breathing apparatus,welding torches and safety glasses,cutting various types of gaskets andreading hydro meters, specializedlaundering, making deliveries,locksmithing, printing signs andcutting keys.

That's just a few of the jobs thesome 30 employees at the CopperCliff modified work centre are doing.

The modified work centre, located inthe former number two change houseat the Copper Cliff mill, providesmeaningful and gainful employmentwherever possible for thoseemployees who are no longer able toperform their regular jobs due to injuryor illness which has occurred either onor off the job.

Inco Metals has long maintained apolicy of employing as many peopleas possible who have permanentpartial disabilities, in work which is inkeeping with their abilities.

"At the modified work centre, weattempt to bring together the availablejobs and those permanently partiallydisabled people who can do thosejobs," explains John Rickaby,superintendent of central services inthe safety and plant protectiondepartment. 'We try to suit theindividual to the available job on thebasis of what he can do rather thanwhat he can't do."

The process of matching a partiallydisabled employee to a job whichbecomes available, begins with areview of eligible employees by therehabilitation co-ordinator, Joe Rossi,who maintains a listing of allpermanently partially disabledpersonnel in the division.

and contacts them by telephone. Atthis time he explains briefly the jobopening and its requirements to theemployee and asks him to attend aninterview at his office. There, Joeexplains the job more fully andarranges for the candidate to visit thejob site and meet the supervisor.

Should the person accept the jobopportunity, he is requested to obtainmedical clearance from his physicianand report to work.

Once he has reported for work, theemployee undergoes a period of re-orientation and training. During thistime he becomes acclimatized to the

Modifiedwork centreworking environment and is given theopportunity to test his physical andmental abilities.

There is close communicationbetween the company's director ofoccupational health, Dr. WallyWoychuk, and the employee'sphysician as to the employee'spresent capabilities and the type ofwork he can do. Should the employeefeel that he has recovered completelyfrom his illness or injury, he mayreturn to his original job provided hereceives consent and a return to workslip from his physician.

The centre's supervisor, GeneDankewich, maintains goodcommunications with his people as amatter of policy.

Each morning Gene sits down withthe employees to chit chat and, asGene says, "to observe eachindividual's ability, to find out how he'sfeeling and if he's feeling fit for thework he is to do that day.

"We try to operate with a buddysystem which involves the pairing ofthe employees," Gene adds. "Thismeans that no matter where theemployee is working, if he requiresphysical assistance he knows there'ssomeone close by who can help him.The same thing applies to theemployee learning the ropes. If hecan't solve a problem, say with repairwork, he can get answers from theveteran who has the experience."

"We all recognize and respect eachother's needs," Gene concluded."We're one big close family."

A big jobdone in record time

There are three kinds of people inthe world; people who make thingshappen, people who watch thingshappen and people who wonder whathappened. We're graciously endowedwith people from the first group."

Thus spoke Bruce Warren,machine shop coordinator. Hiseloquence was inspired by theexceptional work done bymaintenance mechanics in machininga special, 'rush" order of 1,100copper cooling fingers destined forthe smelter in Indonesia.

Cooling fingers are jacketsapproximately two feet long and fourinches square designed to have waterflowing through their interior. Installedin five rows around the walls of theelectric furnace in a one foot squarepattern, the fingers cool therefractory. The higher temperaturesrequired to smelt the lateritic ores ofIndonesia necessitates the use ofthese fingers to prevent the refractoryfrom burning.

Divisional shops was awarded thecooling finger project only after itoutbid several Canadian and foreignconcerns. Not only did it offer thelowest bid to perfor,m the requiredwork but divisional shops also agreedto have the job completed within thevery tight time constraints. Thatmeant machining 88 tons of copper inonly three weeks!

Work began in earnest onNovember 20. Everyone that wouldbe involved with the cooling fingersjob met in the divisional shopsconference room before the first drillbit began to turn to discuss theproject and its importance. Thereafterthe meetings were held, according to

Bruce, every three or four days tokeep everyone concerned posted onthe works progress.

The operation involvedmaintenance mechanics drilling twosmall ho'es about an inch and a halfin diameter in the end of therectangular copper finger. A larger,two and a quarter inch hole wasbored in from the side joining the twosmaller holes to form a coil.

A plug for the larger hole wasmanufactured and fitted into place.The finger was then tested for leaksusing 100 pounds per square inch air.The entire cooling finger, in the finalsteps of the operation, was steamcleaned, degreased and deburred, puton pallets and loaded into containervessels. The cooling fingers weretrucked to St. John, New Brunswickfrom where they will be shipped toIndonesia.

The most difficult part of theproject, Bruce reveals, was threadingthe copper. The cooling fingers aremade out of extruded copper, that iscopper that was forced through a dieblock to give it its shape. For someunknown reason this type of copperdoes not thread easily.

The problem was solved when themaintenance mechanics replaced thenormal clearance tap, used to cut thethreads, with a high clearance tap.Once we did that, Bruce says, we

had no problems at all.When the last pallet of cooling

fingers was ushered out of divisionalshops with a one or two day cushionbefore the December 23 deadline,there was no man happier thanRichard Dixon, a buyer for PT Inco inToronto and the man responsible forthe cooling finger contract.

Having visited the machine shopwhile work on the cooling fingers wasproceeding, Richard comments thatthe pride of workmanship was evidentamong those involved with theproject. 'I could see that they hadreally taken personal interest in themanufacture of the cooling fingers,

he notes. I could see that personalpride went into each unit beingdone.

Richard expected some problems,he confesses, only because themachine shop had never worked withthis type of copper before and otherswho had previously attempted thisproject had experienced horrendousproblems. He commended the

machine shop crew on their skilfullabors. Theyve done a job that hasbeen practically without problems.

With an ever growing list ofaccomplishments including trunnions,rotate drive housings and thrust rolls,could anyone really have expectedanything less when the machine shopboys applied themselves to coppercooling fingers? (Cont:nued on next page)

Shades of SheHey! Hints ofHawthorne' Bits of Blake! When anevent of either humorous or dubiousdistinction occurs at Creighton mine, itusua'ly becomes documented n theform of a semi-epic poem penned bythe ampooning lyricist of 3800 level,Louis Beres, a mine foreman.

One of Beres best works, entitledThe Gidi-ep Woe Randyjoy is a

mirthful tongue-in-cheek look at thenot-so-smooth development of ahybrid slusher known as the Randyjoy,a combination of the Rand and theJoy slushers.

The tale of the Randyjoy began in1978 when it was noticed there wasan overabundance of Joy motors instock. Bill Glogger, mines salvageequipment shop eader at theKirkwood mine salvage shop, devisedan adapter that allowed Joy motors tobe mounted on the Rand slusher. Thecrossbred machine worked well, so itseemed, passing inspections at thesalvage shop and the drill fitters shopat Creighton before beingcommissioned underground. Both Bill Gagnon and Bill Gloggeradmitted that over-looking the obvioushad them feeling a little stupid.Everyone turned their attentions tosolving the rotation problem. A lot ofpeople were stumped for some time.

The solution was sparked by a joke. Afellow employee telephoned to tell BillGlogger that his Randyjoy headachewould be relieved f he just turned thedrift around. It struck him then .. therotation would be rectified f the rollerswere reversed.The prob/em is now so/vedAnd its putting Out muckIt was fixed by the minersThey just never get stuckAnd we thought perhapsYou might /ike to knowWe now call this slusherO/d Gidi-ep Go

Louis served up the poem just afterthe rotation problem was solved and itimmediately became a hit witheveryone who read it from Creightonto Kirkwood.

Royce Simpson, a plate worker, firstclass, supplied a cartoon of theRandyjoy dilemma that complimentsLouis poem nicely. Its excellent,beamed Bill Glogger. 1 admire theguy who wrote it; he shouldn't be aminer. He should have had an awardfor the poem alone.

Oldest mucking machine0. When does a mucking machinelast several times longer than amodern day marriage?A. Always.

While the spiralling divorce ratemight serve to give mucking machinesan unfair advantage in anycomparison of longevity, there is oneparticular mucking machine atCreighton mine nine shaft that willdefy just about any measure ofdurability. In fact, it is the oldestworking muck loader in the nation.

Recently, Atlas-Copco, a miningmachine manufacturer, launched asearch for some of the oldest muckingmachines.

It started very innocently, saidBob McLeod, Sudbury branch

manager for Atlas-Copco. 'It was avery simple request (from head officein Sweden) asking where some of theoldest mucking machines in Canadamight be,

Aware of the fact that a number ofthe machines were sold to Inco, Bobtook his quest to Creighton mine.Going by serial numbers he learnedthat number 772705 was operating indrift development on the 4800 footlevel. Number 772705 happened tobe the first mucking machinedelivered by the company inFebruary, 1961!

According to Bob it is unusual forthis type of machine to survive therigors of hard rock mining for over twodecades. We consider seven years

as the write-off value of muckingmachine, stated Bob, It s. hecontinued, a reflection of themaintenance operation of the mineand the miners who operated themachine over the years. We haveseen loaders, Bob recalled, that justget beaten to death. They dont lastvery long.

Isadore Izzy Seguin, a drift drillerfor the last 25 of his 33 years with thecompany, has operated old number772705 for a good part of its life atInco. 'It was 1966 that I first got myhands on it, he remembered. It wasin good shape and we kept it thatway, too.

Taking care of this machine for Izzymeans lubricating it regularly. It alsomeans washing it after every shift somuck will not accumulate. Whenanything goes wrong, he immediatelycalls in a drill fitter to rectify theproblem. Theyre good machines, Izzyassessed, that go through an awfulpile of muck, day in and day out.

Operating the loader properly alsohelps extend its life, he noted.Theres no trick to it," Izzy said. Its

just a matter of learning how to do itproperly. You've go to make sure youdont jump off the track too often.

When Atlas-Copco officials weretaken to the worksite underground toview the mucking machine, theyasked if it had been wiped to aspotless shine for the benefit of theirvisit. They were surprised to learn thatthis was the way it was always keptby the men operating it, Combine agood product with a goodmaintenance operation and goodminers who take care of it and youget a machine that just keeps onmucking.

Railway snow removalParalysis. It seems to be the intent fury on us. Roads are blocked,

interrupted. Battling the elements andkeeping 90 miles of vital railroad trackin the Sudbury basin open is the workof Inco's transportation department.

From the first snowfall to the lastmelt the transportation department has50 men, two snow plows, threemechanical switch brooms and threepayloaders poised to keep theimportant arteries linking thecompany's various operations open.

It is the crews on the trains whoinform the transportation foreman andthe dispatcher of which sections oftrack need to be cleared, says DannyBrazeau, a track foreman. The amountof snow dictates what kind ofequipment will be used.

A light snow cover that reaches thelevel of the rail, warrants the use of amechanical switch broom, a kind ofhuge roller brush that sweeps thetracks clean. Anything more needs asnow plow pushed by one of theengines.

In addition to the plow blade itself,the snow plows are equipped with awing" that allows snow to be pushed

oft to the side. Large build-ups of thewhite stuft are removed with one ofthe payloaders.

With the great lengths of railroadthat have to be maintained, it isnatural that some areas are moreprone to drifting and more difticult toclean than others. One such area,notes Danny, is the slag dump cut",a kind of winding alley at the east endof the Copper Clift smelter that theslag trains follow to go to the slagdump. Payloaders and trucks arecalled in every three or four snowfallsto remove the snow that builds upalong its restricted confines.

Thus continues the seasonalstruggle against whatever winter canthrow. Fortunately it is thetransportation crew that usually wins.

Snowmobiles:A way Of life for Elmer Heikkila

There is hardly a day gone by,whether it be winter or summer, rainor shine, that Elmer Heikkila hasn'tbeen thinking about snowmobiling.He'll be the first to admit with a wrygrin at his wife, that he lives for hishobby.

"It wasn't always so," says Elmer, aprocess laborer at the Copper Cliftmill. Up until 1964, he was an avidskier. An injury however, forced himoff the slopes. At the same time, thepurchase of his home in thebackwoods of Long Lake introducedhim to a less rigorous sport his entirefamily could enjoy together.

In 1974, Elmer and a few othersnowmobilers formed the Broder-Dill

Snowmobile Association, of whichElmer is now president. But it wasn'tlong before everyone concernedrealized there wasn't a safe place totravel on their machines - awayfrom subdivisions, traffic and water.

So with this in mind, and a smallgrant from the Ministry of NaturalResources, they began work on whatis now known as the Killarney Trail.Starting at Long Lake, Elmer, his fivesons and a couple of friends blazedtheir way with chain saws through thebush that first summer in thedirection of Killarney. In thebeginning, all the work was to bedone by hand, the rough terrain toomuch for machinery.

"We carried the logs, some ofthem 35 feet long, on our backs,"says Elmer. "It was all done byvolunteers - took every weekend,my two weeks holidays, daylight todark for two summers to completeour 38 miles of the trail (a Killarneyclub was in the process of coming upto meet us)."

"Blazing the trail would have beeneasy," says Elmer, "if it had been theonly job required of the men." But asthings go, it wasn't. A goodsnowmobile trail offers safe ridingaway from open water. And aroundevery corner, it seemed, there was acreek, a swamp or a river. Along theway it became necessary to

construct bridges, 12 hand-hewnbridges, some with a span of over150 feet. In building the last one, nearKillarney, the crew was able toemploy a tractor and jeep, the trailbehind them now as smooth as aroad.

Last year with close to 45 miles ofgroomed trail completed, there wasonly one project left to complete - arefuge station near Killarney forweary or stranded snowmobilers.

"Our chalet is hand-built, made oflogs from the area. It measures 20feet by 20 feet, complete with busseats for beds, cooking utensils, astove, an axe, saw and a guest bookfor visitors. All we ask is that theyleave it as they found it."

"The trail and chalet are openyear-round," says Elmer, "and wouldmake an ideal nature trail during thesummer months for hikers."

"It's wilderness out there," saysElmer. "We've seen a few bearsourselves. They came right up to ourtent at night. You could hear themsniffing around but they neverbothered anything. Except once -they took our coffee, jam andmargarine. Why they took the instantcoffee - I don't know."

Several times a year Elmerconducts snowmobile trainingcourses through the Ministry ofNatural Resources and CambrianCollege. The majority of his studentsare teenagers, seeking to obtain theirsnowmobile drivers' licences.Although safety is the main point ofthese courses, a few tricks forsurvival are thrown in for goodmeasure.

"We advocate the buddy system,which is to take someone with you. Inthat way, you aren't stuck by yourselfif your machine breaks down. If youcan't do this, tell someone where youare going. After driving for an hour at15 miles an hour, you're 15 milesfrom home. You can't walk that farout of the bush in eight hours. Mostlikely you'd start sweating and perish.If you've told someone where you'regoing and you break down, just staywhere you are and build a fire. Thenmake a shelter. It won't be long

before they find you.""Building a fire when stranded is

essential," says Elmer. "And so arewaterproof matches, something whichmany people forget to pack. A littletin foil will help to deflect the heat.For stubborn fires that just won't staylit, a small rag dipped into the gastank of the snowmobile will help whenadded to the kindling."

People think that something likewine will warm the body, but itdoesn't. All it does is bring the bloodcloser to the surface of the skin, Allyou're really doing is cooling the bodyinside as well as out. But if a personis going to do it anyway, they should

not overdo it. If they are caught theywill be charged with impaired drivingand could lose their licence."

Now that the Killarney Trail iscompleted, Elmer has another projectto think about. In the future, he andother association members hope tobegin work on a trail which will runfrom the Killarney Highway toEspanola where it will hook up with aproposed cross-Canada trail alreadyin existence from Sault Ste. Marie toSpanish and from southern Ontario toBritt. The only problem they might runinto, says Elmer, is building bridgeslarge enough to span open watersuch as the Spanish River.

Hot water savingsat Creighton

Can you get into hot water savingenergy? Certainly, say members ofthe Creighton Mine EnergyManagement Committee, who havedevised automatic showers that willsave considerable amounts of waterand heat in that area's dries.

"We were looking at ways to saveenergy," relates Ray Condie, areamaintenance superintendent atCreighton, "when it was suggestedthat we could save a lot of money bysaving water in the showers."

The committee figured that theshowers at Creighton ran an averageseven and a quarter hours per day.This was because the mine has avery extended shift change due to the

great depth of its shaft. Calculationsshowed that each man used 60gallons of hot water. This works outto a total of 72,000 gallons of hotwater per day at nine shaft.

The committee began investigatingautomatic shower shutoff systems toreplace the existing system. Twodifferent types available on themarket were tried and found to beinadequate. Dave Butler, JoeCappeUetti and fellow committeemembers addressed themselves todesigning their own unit.

They devised a system consistingof an electrical push button operatinga solid state time switch whichcontrols a solenoid valve. So instead

of the manually controlled "gang"shower, each shower head isactivated by means of a push button.It gives an individual three minutesworth of hot water each time it ispressed. The duration of the averageemp'oyee's shower at Creighton is sixminutes.

All 76 showers at the Creightonnumber 9 shaft dry were converted tothe new system by the end of lastDecember. Now each batherconsumes only 24 gallons of waterinstead of 60. Considerable savingsare being realized in water andnatural gas used to heat the water.Implementation of the devices costover $40,000.

The committee also improved themethod of dispensing soap inshower rooms. The small dispensersscattered throughout the room werereplaced with an air pump whichsupplies soap under pressure.

So far both the water and soapinnovations have worked admirably.OSHE and ASHE committees havereported great employee acceptanceof the new systems. In an effort tomake other energy managementcommittees aware o this energysaver, Ray and his associates hosteda meeting at Creighton where it wasexplained and exhibited. Each willdetermine if Creighton's new systemcan be applied in their own areas.

The Spencer sevenWhen the Tnangle ran a story of

two families that had six brotherseach, all working at lnco, AdegeSpencer, an operating shaft boss atSouth mine, could honestly say "wegot them beat." You see, there areseven, that's right, seven members ofthe Spencer clan with the company.

Aldege, 59, is the senior member ofthe bunch with 42 years of serviceunder his belt. Rolly, 56, a car repairman in the Copper Cliff car shop, andWilbert, 58, an electrician in thelocomotive shop, both have been withInco for 40 years. Leo, 54, acarpenter at Frood mine, has 38 yearswhile Len, four years younger, is afirst class maintenance mechanic with35 years of association with Inco. Bob,

40, a mechanic first class at thecopper refinery and Roger, 34, abrakeman in transportation, round outthe Spencer septette with 23 and 17years of service respectively.

The sons of Fred Spencer, aveteran of 41 years with the company,these fellows are part of a broodnumbering 12 who were raised inCon iston.

Aldege remembers the large familyliving in a house through theDepression that was slightly too smallfor the numbers it held. "I remembersleeping three to a bed during theDepression," Aldege recalls.

While Aldege tries to keep track ofhis brothers and sisters with the

occasional telephone call, theygenerally all meet at special eventssuch as anniversaries, weddings,Christmas and New Year's gatherings,and at their respective camps duringthe summer.

Second generation Incoites whohave amassed over 2 1/3 centuries ofservice, the Spencer's have 21children among them. One, Chris, adrafting technician at generalengineering, is Rolly's son andrepresents the third generation of thefamily with the company.

There have been a lot of family actsover the years at Inco but it isdoubtful indeed that any can matchthe Spencer seven.

St. Patrick's DayFor some mysterious reason, St.

Patrick's Day brings out the wee bit ofIrish in all of us. On March 17 we dona patch of green or maybe sing a fewbars of "We're off to Dublin in thegreen".

March 17 is the anniversary of thedeath of St. Patrick in 461 AD. St.Patrick, the patron of Ireland and asaint of the Roman Catholic Church,was born around 389 A.D.

According to legend, St. Patricklead an adventurous hfe. At the age of16 he was captured by Irish pirateswho took him from Britain to Ireland

as a slave. There he tended the flocksof an Ulster chieftain.

During the six years as a slave, St.Patrick underwent a spiritualtransformation. Upon escaping fromhis captors, he fled to the coast oflreand where he boarded a ship forBritain.

He decided to devote his life toreligious work and made his way tothe monastery of St. Martin in France.After spending almost two decades onthe continent, preparing himself for hiswork, St. Patrick was commissionedby Pope Celsine to work in Ireland.

He returned there in 433 AD. as abishop.

The saint worked zealously to bringChristianity to the pagan Irish. Hisattempts were so successful that hecame to be known as the one whofound Ireland all heathen and left it

all Christian." It is believed hefounded more than 300 churches andbaptized more than 120,000 peopleduring his ministry.

One of the best known legends toldabout St. Patrick was his ability tocharm the snakes of Ireland into thesea where they drowned.

Another popular legend maintansthat St. Patnck used the shamrock toexplain the Tnnity to the Insh people.The three leaves represented the threepersons of the Innity and the stem onwhich they grew symbohzed thegodhead.

Some of St. Patnck's own wntngsare the earliest surviving documents ofInsh history. The most notable is hisConfession, written n defense of hisministry and the main source ofinformation on his life.

A further source of nformaton onSt. Patrick's Day and related activitiesis Sudburys Shamrock Club. Theclub, which was established in 1959,has close to 40 members,approximately three-quarters of whomare Inca employees. All were eitherborn in Ireland or are of Irish descent.

'One of the main purposes of theclub is to provide moral and financialassistance for other Irishmen whocome here from Ireland,' explains PatGeraghty, presdent of the ShamrockClub and a maintenance mechanic atthe smelter. "We are also dedicated topreserving the culture and we do thisby holding social activities for thewhole family such as dances andpicnics."

Adds fellow member and one of thefounders of the club, Pat Weir, amaintenance planner at the smelter,'Were like a family who looks after

each other and helps each other out."

The club also makes donations frommoney raised at its social activifles tovarious charities and healthorganizations in the Sudbury area.

The organization keeps its culturalflavor by stipulating that only thoseborn in Ireland may sit on the club'sexecutive. If at least one familymember is of nsh descent, the restare welcome to join.

Club members are busy makingpreparations for their big day whichthey will celebrate officially March 13at a dinner dance at the Steel Hall nSudbury. There will be liveentertainment throughout the evening.

So if you feel that wee bit of Irishcoming out sooner than expected,partake of the festivities March 13.

Fifty-three years ago the presidentof Branch 76 of the Royal CanadianLegion, J.J. Ferry, asked RudyardKipling to compose an inscription for aproposed memorial plaque. Thefamous writer penned these lines:We, giving al gained all neither

As a result of a new program introduced at Port Co/borne called theMaintenance Area Concept System, new shop facilities in the E. N. P.department are now operational. The EN. R. is the first building to haveits own shop area. Previously, all maintenance personnel reported to acentral area. The refurbished area of the building has large workingspaces, a new lunchroom, a tool crib and offices for supervision. Several computer-based equipment controllers are being installed at thePort Colborne nickel refinery. In order to properly service this newequipment electricians and instrument technicians are being trained on aspecial training controller. Gaty House of the instrument shop is shownsetting up the special training unit This unit will not only teach employeeshow to repair the controllers but also to install and program them.

The Fort Erie Y W C. A. has received permission to hold exercise classesat the recreation hall at the Port Colborne nickel refinery. The classes,called Aerobics in Motion, are open to the public and have been sowell attended that two other classes are tentatively planned to startup in April.

Canadian Ski PatrolIt wasn't long ago that members of

the Canadian Ski Patrol System wereseen exclusively on downhifl slopesthroughout Canada. Now, with thegrowing popularity of cross countryskiing, patrollers have taken theirvaluable service to the nordic trails.

John Filiatraut. a blue-eyed athleteof medium proportions, employed asa train dispatcher with thetransportation department, is vice-president of the nordic division ot thelocal branch of the Canadian SkiPatrol and an active ski patroller. He,along with two other individuals, GaryDesabrais, a drift driller at Copper CliffSouth mine, and Lorne Corlett, anemployee with Ontario Hydro, formthe nucleus of a young, expandingorganization.

On many weekends throughout thewinter, this trio can be found at theirbase at Rocky Mountain Riding Ranchpracticing first aid and rescuetechniques. Other times they are onduty at loppets, such as the onesponsored by Inco, or cross countryski competitions, ready to help injuredskiers.

With more people cross countryskiing over more kilometers of ski trailson faster skis, embellished with moresophisticated waxes, the number ofaccidents on trails has risen markedly.So has the need for nordic patrollers.The basic difference between a'pine

and nordic patrolling is in removing avictim," stresses John. 'It's a matter ofmoving someone a hundred metreson a hifl, versus taking a person outfive or ten ki'ometers over roughterrain."

The training of a nordic ski patrollerconsists of a first aid course takeneach autumn, various seminarsthroughout the year and a twodaytraining session where recruits aretaught how to remove a victimproperly. They use a rescue toboggandonated by lnco and a collapsibleframework in their packsacks that,along with the skis, can be fashionedinto an effective rescue sled.

Intermediate skiing ability is one ofthe prerequisites of nordic patrolling.That means, defines John, being ableto ski a fairly difficult series of trailswithout falling and hurting oneself, thatis, being able to ski under control.

The great distances patrollers mustski over a winter, in some casesseveral hundred kilometers, practicallyensures their development into veryproficient skiers.

In his experience as a patroller,John has encountered a variety ofinjuries on the trails. Sprains, scrapesand the occasional separated shoulderare the type of wounds cross countryskiers inflict upon themselves. Themost frequent problem suffered byskiers, John continues, is frost bite.

People out for a pleasurableafternoon ski, rarely pack extraclothing or other necessities so thatthey are caught unprepared for thecold. Lengthy exposure to cold mayinduce a rapid cooling of bodytemperature, a serious, life-threateningcondition known as hypothermiawhich calls for immediate first aidmeasures.

John and his associates haveturned their attention to conductingthe country's first junior nordic skipatrol program. Youngsters betweenthe ages of 12 and 15 are trained inrescue techniques in a three-phaseprogram. Five junior age skiers weretrained this winter.

Van pool growsThe vanpooling fleet at Inco

has grown by three, bringingthe total number of vehicles onthe road to six. The new vanswere brought into service inJanuary and all serve the longdistance area west of Sudbury.

Two carry passengers toCreighton mine from theMassey area, while the thirdtravels to the Copper Cliffsmelter complex from NairnCentre.

With each van carrying 12people to and from work thereare now 72 people who enjoythe benefits of vanpooling.

Bob Zadow, vanpoolcoordinator, estimates that a

van travelling an average of 80kilometers a day saves about22,000 litres of fuel per year.He adds, The companyremains committed tovanpooling. Whether or not weput any more vans on theroad will depend on response.It depends on the number ofpeople who apply, We'relooking for the commitment of12 people in one specificarea."

The emphasis, Bob adds, isstill in the long distance areasand van allocations will bemade on a first come firstserve basis. Any employeeinterested in vanpooling shouldcall 675-9550.

Suggestion plan awards$2630 The biggest pay out in this edition of the suggestion plan went to Murray Jewitt of the

Clarabelle mitt for his idea of using splice kits on magnetic separation cables to stop oil fromrunning through the cables into the switchroom gear. This saved on the replacement of entirelengths of cable when problems with oil occurred.

$545 William Glogger and Raymond Poulin from Garson mine combined their talents to design anew vent cap for slusher air motors. The old variety of vent cap broke frequently and wasgenerally replaced with a small perforated plug that did not allow enough air to be released.The new vent cap performs better and cuts down on materials as well.

$500 The removal of heavy slimes from Copper Cliff South mine was a problem that attracted theattentions of Edward Harper. Where electric and air pumps had failed Ed proposed to use aclam arrangement. Now heavy slimes are being removed in a safer, more reliable fashion.

$395 Too much time was being used installing and removing a work staging when repairs weremade to crushers decided Boris Larivere of Creighton mine. He proposed that acombination work staging and muck deflector door be attached below the swing jay onto thewall. When the crusher is operating it acts as a deflector and stops buildup on the floor. Whenthe crusher is down the plate swings over the discharge hole, hangs on a safety chain and actsas a work staging. This effectively eliminates the time consuming work of installing andremoving a staging. It shortened crusher down time and improved safety around the crusher.

$390 Garnet Schruder of Garson mine addressed himself to the problem of controlling ore in theore pass to prevent wet muck from running' and suggested installing an air cylinder abovethe ore pass slide. This pushes a plate down to stop the muck from running and eliminatesmuck runs and the labor needed to clean them up.

$375 The ball mill grates in the separation section of matte processing were difficult to remove forinspection because of build-ups, noticed Moe Papineau. He suggested instalhng carbon steelgrates in the discharge end of these mills to prevent build ups. This idea was found to savematenal and to improve safety.

$350 Elisio Curridor of the Clarabelle mill earned a suggestion plan award for the modifications heproposed to the crusher bowl hopper. The hopper had been bolted to the bowl with vanousbolts until he suggested welding lugs on the bowl and using a flat bar bolted to the feedhopper and bowl. Since no holes have to be redrilled when changes are required. the deasaves time and labor.

$305 Raymond Gagnon and Bob Simon of divisional shops discovered that the left hand threadon the coupUng end of the SRL pump shafts allowed the nut to back off and break the housingcovers. They recommended that the thread be changed for a right hand SKF nut and washer.This prevents the nut from backing up and eliminates the need to buy a new housing coverevery time this equipment is in for repairs.

$225 After a trial period it was found that ceramic tiles proved a superior material for use as skirtingon conveyor transfer chutes at Clarabelle mill. The old material had to be replaced frequently.The tiles last longer and save on downtime. The idea to change materials on the chutesbelongs to Stuart Dickson and Douglas Morrison of the Clarabelle mill.

$220 Nat Bradley of matte processing advised that the discharge lines of the no. 36 and no.37 Denver pumps should be rerouted. The rerouting was found to eliminate spills and wear onthe Denver pumps, saving material, energy and labor costs.

$200 Finding that the end blades on certain roasters wore out too rapidly, Joe Clark of the CopperCliff smelter submitted the idea of installing inserts on the blades. This prolongs the life of theblades cutting material and labor costs.

$150 Problems associated with overheated gnd banks on the number three cottrell and theirmnaccessibihty for servicing were circumvented when Brian King and Copper Cliff smeltersuggested the gnd banks be moved to the operating room and mounted at a convenientheight.

$150 Denis Landry of Levack mine recommended that the band saw's steel table in the salvageshop be modified to factate the cutting of heavy wall pipe. His design provided a safer, moreefficient method of cuthng pipe.

$150 Pau' Thompson of Levack mine designed a cylinder plate for installing track air switches thateliminated air switches from moving in the old ties and allowed for easy maintenance ofswitches,

$150 Calvin McFarlane from Garson mine solved the problem of water entering main telephonejunction boxes in the power raise and corroding connections by proposing that the boxes besealed and eve! boxes be installed.
