Learning Technologies

Thinking with technology

Integrating ICT Classroom Teacher

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Certainly technology should lead student learning through engagement, providing connection & us Technology should be a tool to help educators meet the educational needs of all children. As such, technologies cannot function as solutions in isolation but must be thought of as key ingredients in making it possible for schools to address core educational challenges1. But while they may have abundant computers, schools may not use them in the best ways to enhance learning. A great deal depends on the levels of planning, structure, preparation, and evaluation of the potential impact that technology will have on teaching, learning, and achievement. It is the eleaders in schools that have control of that potential impact for smooth and seamless access to teaching and learning with ICT.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability

Students develop ICT capability as they learn to

use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school, and in

their lives beyond school. ICT capability involves students in learning to make the most of the

technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and

limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment.

Computer based technologies offer students and teachers the opportunities to access vast resources and the opportunities to explore new, exciting and powerful ways of teaching and learning.

Tips for Computer Co-ordinators (In no particular order!) So you have been convinced to take on the role as computer co-ordinator. Here are some tips from a non-techno teacher who has stumbled through the role and managed to gain some kind of equilibrium in the school. Computer Maintenance Companies • Make sure your school network is well managed. Don’t pay an outside company unless it is good value! Also it makes sense to have standard equipment that can be fixed remotely etc.

Your team: Make the most of your team. Select those who are talented and helpful. They will be your lifesavers on many occasions! Computer Co-ordinator is just that – a co-ordinator. Organise a team to work with you. The more you can share the load the better.

• Staff Communication. Create a staff distribution list on your email so you can easily email updates and information to all staff. Remember to include your SASS staff as well. Report back to staff asap. Pass on information. If there is no time at the staff housekeeping meeting, type a quick summary and email everyone the CC summary and Powerpoint.

Training: Attend every training day. It is important to find out information and it is great to network with other CC’s. If you can bring another staff member from your team all the better as it helps to make decisions and lightens your load. Perhaps bring a different member of the team each time.

Be organised. Document everything. It may take a little time now but later it will save time when you need instructions or details. Create an excel sheet with all your technology assets and details. Data included can be room number, staff responsible, type of technology, model number, serial number, date received, purchase details, printer cartridges used. This can be a timesaver when you have to order cartridges etc or when you are on the phone to IT and need information. • Make a list of helpful phone numbers. • Make a list of passwords and keep in a secure area. Make sure the Principal either has a copy or knows where it is. • Make a list of the server address for your school, the CPC server address and the IP range for your school.

Outside Collaboration: Join a good forum. You will learn lots on the forum, have a few laughs and also have the opportunity to ask questions. The people on the forum are quite happy to answer questions no matter how simple!

Don’t let the turkeys get you down. Keep smiling when it’s supposedly all your fault. Manage the boss. Discuss with your Principal on how best to use the Computer Co-ordinators budget. Decide whether it is best to have a few hours a week to deal with computer issues or have two or three whole days per term off class to accomplish tasks. A combination of both might work eg: one hour every week (in addition to your allocated RFF) and two days per term plus CC days. Remember you will need additional days during peak times such as installation of equipment eg VC room or new deliveries or tidying the server at the end of the year. The CC budget is to be used to relieve you off class so you can accomplish the role.

• IT help are always willing to give instructions on how to do simple tasks. Type each set of instructions word for word (it is usually the obvious step you forget later on) and save the instructions with a specific name in a technology instructions folder on your school’s server. This will be a great resource for both yourself and anyone else in the school helping you.

Locate a copy of the map of the school with all official room numbers on it. (The SAM will have one.) Make a list of web shortcuts so you can still access essential applications eg OASIS, EMU, Email when the portal is down. • Have the IT service desk website link bookmarked so you have easy access. Use the online forms to log calls. Give as much information as possible as this will speed up results. IT will email you with the job number. Create a folder in your staff email for jobs. They will always be there then for future reference. • Decide whose role it is to check server data back-ups are being completed each week

When new technology equipment is delivered, record on the excel sheet the details (serial no. etc) straight away in case they are damaged or stolen. Send a copy to your SASS staff to enter onto OASIS Assets Register as well. • Become familiar with the network setup in your school. Cable or Wireless? How many data outlets in each room? Location of hubs in your school etc.

Audits: Conduct an audit of technology in the school. Kill two birds with one stone...take a SAO with you and the OASIS assets register so you can do the assets stocktake for auditors at the same time. As CC you are not legally allowed to do the audit. The Office staff will be grateful for your help. • Ask your Teacher Librarian to print off a shelf list of Computer Software the school has and locate site licences. • Locate all accompanying packages. Label everything with date of arrival (if it hasn’t already and if you know). This will help when trying to find packs for later use and work out which computers are out of warranty.

Labelling It is useful when new equipment is installed to put each item’s books, spare cords etc in individual envelopes or bags and write on each then put them altogether in a box. Label the box before storage.

What Policies do you need?: With your committee: locate your school’s policies for : Internet use, Loaning technology Technology Scope and Sequence, Permission for Photography, Video Conferencing, Work with your committee to update or develop these policies and procedures. Have a clear list of students who do not have permission for photography, VC etc. Work with your committee to develop a short and long term technology plan for your school.

Publicity: Volunteer to speak at the P&C meetings. Provide them with information to get them on board. They can be a great help to finance technology. Perhaps organise one of your team members to give talks about technology at school, cyber safety, helping their children effectively research. Include your Teacher Librarian on your technology team. They have a wealth of knowledge in OASIS, forums, blogs and are the ICT research specialist in the school.

School Webpage: Liaise with your school’s web editor. If that is you, enlist help from students and staff to make it a team effort and give a sense of ownership to the students. Encourage staff to experiment with new technology, particularly VC’s and Blogging.

Superceded technology Don’t be afraid to get old technology off your network. Don’t hoard old technology, cords etc. Cull old manuals, software and equipment.

Respect staff who are hesitant to embrace change> Be active in sharing information, great websites and great things being done by your staff. This will create a positive work environment. Offer to help reluctant staff through team teaching.

Coordinate: Above all remember you are just the co-ordinator of a team. You cannot do this by yourself. Use the Computer Co-ordinator budget effectively. You will need the time to tackle these tasks. Delegate where possible. Make the most of networking opportunities and the forum. There are plenty of teachers taking on this role with little experience. Those with more experience are willing to help and give advice if asked. Every school does things differently however there is plenty of support for you out there. Good Luck!
