WARNING: Read and understand allinstructions. Failure to follow allinstructions listed below, may result inelectric shock, fire and/or serious personalinjury.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONSWork Area• Keep your work area clean and well

lit. Cluttered benches and dark areasinvite accidents.

• Do not operate power tools inexplosive atmospheres, such as inthe presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools createsparks which may ignite the dust orfumes.

• Keep bystanders, children, andvisitors away while operating apower tool. Distractions can causeyou to lose control.

Electrical Safety• Double insulated tools are equipped

with a polarized plug (one blade iswider than the other.) This plug willfit in a polarized outlet only one way.If the plug does not fit fully in theoutlet, reverse the plug. If it stilldoes not fit, contact a qualifiedelectrician to install a polarizedoutlet. Do not change the plug inany way. Double insulation eliminates the need for the three wiregrounded power cord and groundedpower supply system.

• Avoid body contact with groundedsurfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is anincreased risk of electric shock if yourbody is grounded.

• Don’t expose power tools to rain orwet conditions. Water entering apower tool will increase the risk ofelectric shock.

• Do not abuse the cord. Never usethe cord to carry the tools or pullthe plug from an outlet. Keep cordaway from heat, oil, sharp edges ormoving parts. Replace damagedcords immediately. Damaged cordsincrease the risk of electric shock.

• When operating a power tool

outside, use an outdoor extensioncord marked “W-A” or “W.” Thesecords are rated for outdoor use andreduce the risk of electric shock.

to a stable platform. Holding the workby hand or against your body isunstable and may lead to loss ofcontrol.

• Do not force tool. Use the correcttool for your application. The correcttool will do the job better and safer atthe rate for which it is designed.

• Do not use tool if switch does notturn it on or off. Any tool that cannotbe controlled with the switch isdangerous and must be repaired.

• Disconnect the plug from the powersource before making anyadjustments, changing accessories,or storing the tool. Such preventativesafety measures reduce the risk ofstarting the tool accidentally.

• Store idle tools out of reach ofchildren and other untrainedpersons. Tools are dangerous in thehands of untrained users.

• Maintain tools with care. Keepcutting tools sharp and clean.Properly maintained tools, with sharpcutting edges are less likely to bind andare easier to control.

• Check for misalignment or bindingof moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that mayaffect the tools operation. Ifdamaged, have the tool servicedbefore using. Many accidents arecaused by poorly maintained tools.

• Use only accessories that arerecommended by the manufacturerfor your model. Accessories that maybe suitable for one tool, may becomehazardous when used on another tool.

Service• Tool service must be performed only

by qualified repair personnel. Serviceor maintenance performed byunqualified personnel could result in arisk of injury.

• When servicing a tool, use onlyidentical replacement parts. Followinstructions in the Maintenancesection of this manual. Use ofunauthorized parts or failure to followMaintenance Instructions may create arisk of electric shock or injury.

SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES

DANGER! Keep hands away fromcutting area and blade. Keep your

second hand on auxiliary handle, ormotor housing. If both hands areholding the saw, they cannot be cut bythe blade.

• Keep your body positioned to eitherside of the saw blade, but not in linewith the saw blade. KICKBACK couldcase the saw to jump backwards. (See“Causes and Operator Prevention ofKickback.”)

• Do not reach underneath the work. The guard can not protect you from theblade below the work.

• Check lower guard for properclosing before each use. Do notoperate saw if lower guard does notmove freely and close instantly.Never clamp or tie the lower guardinto the open position. If saw isaccidentally dropped, the lower guardmay be bent. Raise the lower guardwith the Retracting Lever and makesure it moves freely and does not touchthe blade or any other part, at all anglesand depth of cut.

• Check the operation and condition ofthe lower guard spring. If the guardand the spring are not operatingproperly, they must be servicedbefore use. Lower guard may operatesluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a buildup of debris.

• Lower guard should be retractedmanually only for special cuts suchas “Pocket Cuts” and “CompoundCuts.” Raise lower guard byRetracting Lever. As soon as bladeenters the material, lower guardmust be released. For all other sawing, the lower guard should operateautomatically.

• Always observe that the lower guardis covering the blade before placingsaw down on bench or floor. Anunprotected, coasting blade will causethe saw to walk backwards, cuttingwhatever is in its path. Be aware of thetime it takes for the blade to stop afterswitch is released.

• NEVER hold piece being cut in yourhands or across your leg. It isimportant to support the work properlyto minimize body exposure, bladebinding, or loss of control.

• Hold tool by insulated grippingsurfaces when performing anoperation where the cutting tool may

642743-00 CS1030 CS1040L 4/13/06 10:06 AM Page 3

4

contact hidden wiring or its owncord. Contact with a “live” wire will alsomake exposed metal parts of the tool“live” and shock the operator.

• When ripping, always use a ripfence or straight edge guide. Thisimproves the accuracy of cut andreduces the chance for blade binding.

• Always use blades with correct sizeand shape (diamond vs. round)arbor holes. Blades that do not matchthe mounting hardware of the saw willrun eccentrically, causing loss ofcontrol.

• Never use damaged or incorrectblade washers or bolts. The bladewashers and bolt were speciallydesigned for your saw, for optimumperformance and safety of operation.

• Kickback is a sudden reaction to apinched, bound or misaligned sawblade, causing an uncontrolled saw tolift up and out of the workpiece towardthe operator.

• When the blade is pinched or boundtightly by the kerf closing down, theblade stalls and the motor reactiondrives the unit rapidly back toward theoperator.

• If the blade becomes twisted ormisaligned in the cut, the teeth at theback edge of the blade can dig into thetop surface of the wood causing theblade to climb out of the kerf and jumpback toward operator.

• Kickback is the result of tool misuseand/or incorrect operating proceduresor conditions and can be avoided bytaking proper precautions as givenbelow.a. Maintain a firm grip with both

hands on the saw and positionyour body and arm to allow you toresist KICKBACK forces. Kickbackforces can be controlled by theoperator, if proper precautions aretaken.

b. When blade is binding, or wheninterrupting a cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold thesaw motionless in the materialuntil the blade comes to a

complete stop. Never attempt toremove the saw from the work orpull the saw backward while theblade is in motion or KICKBACKmay occur. Investigate and takecorrective actions to eliminate thecause of blade binding.

c. When restarting a saw in theworkpiece, center the saw bladein the kerf and check that the sawteeth are not engaged into thematerial. If saw blade is binding, itmay walk up or KICKBACK from theworkpiece as the saw is restarted.

d. Support large panels to minimizethe risk of blade pinching andKICKBACK. Large panels tend tosag under their own weight. Supportmust be placed under the panel onboth sides, near the line of cut andnear the edge of the panel.

e. Do not use dull or damagedblade. Unsharpened or improperlyset blades produce narrow kerfcausing excessive friction, bladebinding, and KICKBACK.

f. Blade depth and bevel adjustinglocking levers must be tight andsecure before making cut. If bladeadjustment shifts while cutting, itmay cause binding and KICKBACK.

g. Use extra caution when making a“Pocket Cut” into existing wallsor other blind areas. Theprotruding blade may cut objectsthat can cause KICKBACK.

SE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: Some dust created bypower sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other constructionactivities contains chemicals knownto cause cancer, birth defects or otherreproductive harm. Some examplesof these chemicals are:

• lead from lead-based paints,• crystalline silica from bricks and

cement and other masonry products, • arsenic and chromium from

chemically-treated lumber (CCA).Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type

of work. To reduce your exposure to thesechemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that arespecially designed to filter out microscopicparticles.• Avoid prolonged contact with dust

from power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and otherconstruction activities. Wearprotective clothing and washexposed areas with soap and water.Allowing dust to get into your mouth, eyes, or lay on the skin may promoteabsorption of harmful chemicals.WARNING: Use of this tool cangenerate and/or disburse dust, whichmay cause serious and permanentrespiratory or other injury. Always useNIOSH/OSHA approved respiratoryprotection appropriate for the dustexposure. Direct particles away fromface and body.CAUTION: Wear appropriate hearingprotection during use. Under someconditions and duration of use, noise from this product maycontribute to hearing loss.

• Snagging the lower guard on asurface below the material being cutcan momentarily reduce operatorcontrol. The saw can lift partially out ofthe cut increasing the chance of bladetwist. Ensure there is sufficientclearance under the workpiece.

• When necessary to raise lower guardmanually, use the retracting lever.

• KEEP THE BLADES CLEAN ANDSHARP. Sharp blades minimize stallingand kickback. The use of dull and/ordirty blades can increase the sawloading causing the operator to pushharder which promotes twisting.DANGER: LACERATION HAZARD.KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM CUTTINGAREA. Keep hands away from blades.Never place hands in front of or behindthe path of the blade while cutting. Donot reach underneath work while bladeis rotating. Do not attempt to remove cutmaterial when blade is moving.

• SUPPORT LARGE PANELS. Largepanels must be supported as shown(figure 1) in this manual to minimize therisk of blade pinching and kickback.Material supported only at the ends(figure 2) will lead to blade pinching. When cutting operation requires theresting of the saw on the workpiece, thesaw shall be rested on the larger portionand the smaller piece cut off.

• USE ONLY CORRECT BLADES ANDBLADE ASSEMBLY COMPONENTSWHEN MOUNTING BLADES. Do notuse blades with incorrect size holes.Never use defective or incorrect bladewashers or bolts. Follow blade assemblyprocedures.

• ADJUSTMENTS. Before cutting be suredepth and bevel adjustments are tight.

• SUPPORT AND SECURE THE WORKPROPERLY. Insure that the material tobe cut is clamped (figure 3) and solidlysupported and balanced on a strong, stable and level work surface. Supportthe work so that the wide portion of thesaw shoe is on the portion of thematerial that doesn’t fall after the cut ismade. Never hold cut off piece by hand(figure 4 ). KICKBACK from blade pinchcan result. Keep both hands on saw atall times.

• STAY ALERT AND EXERCISECONTROL. Keep body positioned to oneside of blade. Always maintain a firm gripand control of saw with both hands. Donot change hand grip or body positionwhile saw is running. Take precaution toavoid injury from cut off pieces and otherfalling material during operation.DANGER: RELEASE SWITCHIMMEDIATELY IF BLADE BINDS ORSAW STALLS

GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK• KICKBACK CAN BE CAUSED BY the

saw blade becoming pinched, twisted orbound while cutting, or when the sawstalls. When the blade becomes twistedor misaligned in the cut, the teeth at theback edge of the blade can dig into thetop surface of the wood causing theblade to climb out of the cut and movesuddenly back toward the operator.

TO REDUCE THE RISK OF KICKBACK• Keep a firm grip on saw with both hands

at all times.• Stay alert – exercise control.• Support long overhanging materials. As

the material is cut and weakens, it willsag, causing a pinched blade.

• Support large panels as shown (Fig. 1).Material supported only at the ends (Fig.2) will lead to blade pinching.

• Avoid sawing overhead. Material cansag and will pinch blade.

• Keep blades sharp and clean.• Use fence or straight edge guide when

ripping. Be careful as the cut off strip cansag or twist, closing the cut and pinchingthe blade, leading to KICKBACK.

• Don’t force tool. Wood variables such asknots, hardness, toughness, wetness, pressure treated and freshly cut greenlumber can heavily load the saw whichcan lead to stalling. Push the saw slowerwhen this occurs.

• Don’t remove saw from work during a cutwhile the blade is moving.

• Allow saw to reach full speed beforeblade contacts material to be cut.Starting the saw with the blade againstthe work or pushed forward into cut canlead to stalling or sudden backwardmovement of saw.

• Never attempt to lift saw when making abevel cut. This leads to blade bindingand stalling.

• Always secure work to preventworkpiece movement during cut.

• Do not try to force saw back on line ifyour cut begins to go off line. This cancause KICKBACK. Stop saw and allowblade to coast down to a stop. Withdrawfrom cut and start a new cut on the line.

• Set depth adjustment of saw such that

one tooth of the blade projects below theworkpiece as shown in (figure 8).

• Do not back up a rotating blade in thecut. Twisting the saw can cause theback edge of the blade to dig into thematerial, climb out of the work and runback toward the operator.

• Avoid cutting nails. Inspect for andremove all nails from lumber beforecutting.
