Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the preparation time. What does it mean to be an active Catholic? Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating they are parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. To receive such a letter, one must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to a stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations. In a community as large as St. Raphael, one means of verifying participation is through the regular use of parish offertory envelopes. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time, please at least note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued participation, and you will not be noted as "inactive" on our parish roster. January 17, 2021

Scammers are targeting Fr. Mike once again! We have received calls that SCAMMERS are using Father Mike’s photo in these fraudulent emails that are still being received by our parishioners. Be vigilant and do not respond to these scams! Please know that Father Mike will never ask you for a favor, money, and/or cards via email or texts.

Father Mike recommends The Wild Goose for you:

Do check out the Wild Goose series on Formed. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can do that today. It’s free to the Parish. The Wild Goose series is truly a work of the Holy Spirit from 4PM Media and The Ministry of The Wild Goose. “Wild Goose” was a term that the ancient Celts had for the Holy Spirit. It is a 14-part series featuring Fr. Dave Pivonka and various interviews. Shot in various locations from Niagara Falls to the California desert, The Wild Goose invites viewers to an encounter, or a renewed encounter, with the Holy Spirit. ST. RAPHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND JANUARY 17, 2021

Our Family Prayer for Justice and Human Dignity Loving and faithful God, we come to you, Father, to ask that through your Son, Jesus, and in communion with the Holy Spirit, you help us in the battle against America’s “original sin” of rac-ism that divides us from being the Body of Christ that we are called to be as your children. We implore you to give us your wisdom, so that we may build a community founded on the Gospel message of the life and dig-nity of all people from the womb to the tomb, and to live in com-munion like the divine communion of the Holy Trinity. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith, to love one another regardless of skin color, ethnicity and national origin, just as Jesus loves us. Bless and protect all of us as we live out our faith in being “instruments of your peace” as St. Francis said. Fill us with a thirst for justice and righteousness. Hear our prayer and give us the courage, compassion, and per-severance to root out any form of injustice within our communi-ties and to bring the healing love of Christ to all in need. Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of our Church, hasten to help us and intercede on our behalf, so that our Archdiocese can contin-ue to witness to the Gospel message of life and dignity of all people. Amen.

New Winter Bible Study Bishop Robert Barron explores the EUCHARIST, the gift of Christ's Divine Life that we can receive at every Mass. Using videos, study guides, and group discussion, we will take a deep look at this Holy Sacrament, the central mystery of our faith. The 6-week study from January 12 - February 16 will meet on Tuesday mornings via Zoom from 10:30AM-12:15PM. Please contact Dorothy Welsh [email protected] (301-526-5779) for questions and register. Study Guides can be ordered from www.wordonfire.org.

Do you want to be a Catholic? Or, at least, learn more about the Roman Catholic Church? RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the place for you! In meetings, virtual or physical, by phone and email discussions – you can make new friends who will help guide you and answer your questions and other new friends who are inquirers like you.

If you want to know more, call Linda Poindexter, 240-864-2542 and leave a message. I promise you will get a return call! Or email [email protected]

In the past, RCIA has typically offered weekly meetings with other seekers (those who have never been part of a Church, those that have been in other Christian communities and are seeking more, those who are curious!), and with members of a Team who find great pleasure and satisfaction in being friends and guides for Seekers.

This year may be quite different – in the “meetings” – some of which may be Virtual, some individual by phone, perhaps some together but in a large enough space to be “socially distant”. The Holy Spirit will help us adapt!

In this most difficult, puzzling and even frightening time, the Church remains to nourish spiritually its members, to

encourage and help our world and always to welcome with open arms those who have felt the call to become Catholic

Christians and to know the love of God in Jesus Christ in their lives.

Made in God’s Image: Pray and Work to End the Sin of Racism

Over the coming weeks we will continue to share sections of ‘Made in God’s Image.” Please join Cardinal Gregory and the faithful throughout the archdiocese in praying and working to proclaim Christ’s love for all people and to work for justice for all. Life Giving Dialogue Approaching, speaking, listening, looking at,

coming to know and understand one another, and to find common ground; all these are summed up in one word “dialogue” If we want to encounter and help one another we have to dialogue.” Fratelli Tutti #198 Listening to learn allows us to discern together the paths that should be taken, act in synergy with everyone's gifts; and protect against the isolation of opposing sides or of individuals. (Adapted from the Directory for Catechesis, 289). Active and fruitful dialogue are necessary for fostering conversion of heart and mind that will lead to respect for the dignity of every human person. Best Practices for dialogue that leads to conversion and action:

If possible, find an undisturbed space and set aside distractions.

Offer a prayer to the Holy Spirit to give light and truth to the

dialogue

Look the person in the eye

Listen to understand what the other person is saying - try to

suspend pre-conceived notions

Communicate empathetic responses non-verbally

Be aware of words that trigger your emotions and do not let

them distract you from the point being made. Common trigger

words are: racism, prejudice, privilege

Listen especially carefully when the other person is saying

something that triggers your emotions or something with

which you don’t agree - listen to understand not to respond

Be patient. Story telling (history telling) takes different forms in

every culture. It may take some people longer than others to

share their story and/or experience

Don’t interrupt - but if you are not sure you understood correctly,

wait for a pause to ask clarifying questions

Echo back what you understood the other person say

Only after attentive listening, engage in the reciprocal dynamic

of responding

End the dialogue with a moment of gratitude - thanking the other

person for sharing their story and/or experience

Following the conversation, take to prayer the words or images

that stood out for you – as you pray the Our Family Prayer for

Justice and Human Dignity
