The atmosphere is the gaseous layer that covers the Earth. It is made up of layers with specific functions according to their temperature, height, composition and other characteristics.

The troposphere is the lowest layer. It is in contact with the Earth’s surface. It contains 90% of all the atmospheric gases and almost all the water vapor.

It is 7km thick at the poles and 16km thick at the tropics.

All atmospheric phenomena is generated in this area and it is here where life on Earth takes place.

Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, where the thin ozone layer absorbs the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

It is around 50km thick .

Ozone (O3) is an inorganic molecule. Its odor is sharp, similar to chlorine. It can damage respiratory tissues in animals if breathed directly.
