Subsequently, the Author dis-cusses the synthesis of the most com-mon and industrially important poly-mers from polyolefins to polyacrylics,polyethers, polyesthers, polyamides,polynucleotides, protein and poly-
sacchandes.The discussion is at the advancedundergraduate a nd beginning graduatelevel. Only elementary knowledge oforganic, inorganic and physical chemis-try is necessary. Mathematical deriva-tions are kept to a minimum, while thechemical aspects of the polymerizationis emphasized,
The book’s strong point is the in-tegration of the chemistry into thekinetics of polymerization reactions.Unfortunately the treatment of thestructure of polymers before that of
their synthesis and polymerizationkinetics, as followed by the Author,does not permit a complete and moredirect coupling between physical chem-istry, kinetics, molecular structure andmolecular aggre gates in polymers mo r-
phology). The present book, whilecovering these aspects less deeply thanother textbooks, is more broad in scopeand contains more material than manyother textbooks now available on thissubject. A draw back of th e book whenused as a classroom text is the lack ofproblem set? and the tendency not toarticulate concepts through problems.The volume will be most useful as a
self-study textbook; it contains an ex-cellent set of references where detailedtreatment of m any concepts may befound.
In sum , the volume represents a val-uable addition to the already long listof textbooks in macromolecular sciencethat ha ve a ppeare d in recent years.

This book, which is the second edi-tion of the well known book, Measure-ment Techniques n Heat Transferoriginally published in 1970 is a re-view of measurement techniques andinstrumentation in experimental heattransfer. This reviewer has found thebook to be both useful and understand-able with respect to experimental mea-
surement techniques.Individual chapters are authored by
acknowledged experts in their areas ofresearch a nd this provides for very in-depth coverage. However, there is
some repetition in descriptions of tem-
perature scales which is no doubt at-tr ibutable to this multiple authorship.The re are more typog raphical errors inthe book than one might expect insecond edition. A major change in thesecond edition is the replacement of
the original three-part Chapter 2 ont emperatu re measurement by two s e parate chapters; Chapter 2 which de-
scribes platinum resistance thermom-
etry, and Chapter 3, which deals withthermocouple measurements. Thischange does not signiscantly alter thecoverage of these topics. The new edi-t ion has added an appendix on theInternational Practical TemperatureScale of 1968.
Chapter 1 deals with estimation of
errors in temperature measurement,particularly with regard to thermo-couples. Temperature measurementusing platinum resistance thermometry,thermocouples, and optical techniquesis considered in Chapters 2 through 5.Chapters 6 and 7 discuss spectroscopicand other techniques for temperaturemeasurem ent in high temperature gasesand plasmas. Transient methods forestimating surface hea t flux is the topicof Chapter 8. Experimental applica-tions of the analogy between heat andmass transfer by convection are men-tioned in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 isconcerned with measurements of ther-mal radiation. Measurement techniquesfor physical properties important forheat transfer are described in Chapters
and 12. Chapters 13 and 14 are de-voted to velocity measurements usingIaser-Doppler and cooled film ane-mometry.
