all have used their God-given talents to
touch the hearts of audiences everywhere.
Meanwhile, The Actors Fund, this year’s
Pinnacle of Achievement honoree, has been
serving entertainers and performers in need for
over 130 years.
In 2015, The Salvation Army will
commemorate its worldwide Sesquicentennial
anniversary. We will celebrate those who have
given to The Salvation Army, as well as the suc-
cess and triumphs of those who have received.
We will use our first 150 years as a foundation
and a guide so that we may move forward in
continuing to serve people in the Greater New
York area. The future will undoubtedly present
new and different challenges, but with the
continued support from friends and colleagues
like all of you here tonight, we are confident
that we will meet those challenges and improve
the lives of those in our communities in new
and exciting ways.
We are humbled and grateful for the
work and sacrifices made by the people of
Greater New York and we are inspired by the
generosity of our donors. With your help, The
Salvation Army has tirelessly served countless
people and communities to meet basic needs,
engender change, instill hope, and provide a
foundation for healing and growth. We look
forward to doing the same in the New Year.
Merry Christmas and God bless you!

those who are in need. Thousands of people
across the Greater New York area stand united
in support of The Salvation Army’s mission as
we go about “Doing the Most Good.” We are
privileged to serve God by serving others and
we fight with conviction to battle against the
elements that keep people at the margins. We
serve our neighbors, friends, and family in an
effort to help rebuild lives with compassionate
care through a myriad of services, including
food, shelter, educational programs, and
spiritual support. We want the people of New
York to have a practical and lasting display of
love and support on the pathway of hope.
Tonight we celebrate New Yorkers help-
ing New Yorkers. Our honorees and special
guests exemplify the core mission of The Sal-
vation Army. Our Community Service Award

Dear Friends,
I want to send my heartfelt congratulations to The Actors Fund on receiving The Salvation Army’s Pinnacle of Achievement Award.
How wonderful that this great organization, which has gallantly performed “backstage” for so many decades, will be in the spotlight. As an actor, I can’t think of any recipient more deserving, or more appropriate, considering the sim-ilarities in the missions of these two beloved organizations. For people in need, crisis or transition, The Actors Fund and The Salvation Army have been there, treating all who turn to them with dignity and respect.
I wish I could be there to share in the festivities of your Gala and to give my standing ovation to The Fund as it is honored, but please know I am with you in spirit.
With warmest regards,
Vanessa Williams

letters from broadway!
To The Salvation Army & The Actors Fund,
Both of these organizations have been dear to me over the years. I served on the Board of Directors of The Actors Fund and remain a Life Member. I only left the board because I felt I couldn’t give enough quality time to their wonderful work. As for The Salva-tion Army, my interest and admiration began with the experience of my brother in 1967. During the terrible race riots in Detroit, my brother was in the National Guard and saw the action firsthand. There were a few trucks handing out coffee and doughnuts, but only for a price. The soldiers had been without food for almost twenty-four hours. These “mercy” groups were lucky to get out with their trucks intact… the soldiers were angry.
Only The Salvation Army was there giving comfort, hot coffee, and food, free of charge. And they gave to all, whether they were soldiers trying to keep the peace, police, firemen, or any civilians begging for help to save their homes. If people were in trouble,The Army was there for them. My brother is not a particularly religious man, but on that terrible night, he saw what real Christian good-ness could accomplish. It changed him for the better. And it cer-tainly reinforced my commitment to my fellow men and women. I feel privileged to be counted among the friends of The Salvation Army and urge others to join in their wonderful work.
Sincerely,
Edward Herrmann

the pinnacle of achievement award the actors fund
During the late 1800s, the united
States was still recovering from the
devastating effects of the Civil War.
Although the theater business was booming,
the theatrical profession suffered a tremendous
setback when President lincoln was assassi-
nated by an actor, John Wilkes Booth.
Prejudices against the profession existed
prior to that time, but lincoln’s death rekin-
dled the old hatreds and added more fuel to
the fire. Because of their low standing, mem-
bers of the profession were regularly denied
charity from most institutions, including many
religious organizations. It was not unusual for
them to be refused a decent burial.
In 1879, a new theatrical paper The New York Dramatic Mirror arrived on the
scene. A young NYu freshman, harrison
Grey Fiske, submitted an article and soon after
was writing regularly for the paper. When one
third of The Mirror’s stock became available,
his father bought it and Fiske became the
paper’s editor. Knowing the critical problems
facing the profession, he immediately began
a campaign for an “Actors Fund.” Thanks to
Fiske’s persistence and foresight, The ACTOrS
FuND was founded on June 8, 1882.
A StRONG StARt
This newly created charity immediately
began providing assistance to individuals and
families. By 1887, it purchased a cemetery
in Brooklyn ensuring that no one would be
without a proper burial. The first Actors Fund
home on Staten Island was dedicated in 1902.
This was made possible, in part, by the success-
ful 1892 Fair, held at Madison Square Garden,
which raised over $163,000. This was the
first time that the profession was overwhelm-
ingly accepted by society. In attendance were
President and Mrs. Grover Cleveland, Mr. and
Mrs. John Jacob Astor, Andrew Carnegie, J.
Pierpont Morgan, and Cornelius vanderbilt.
Special Benefit performances around
the country and a series of hugely successful
fairs filled the coffers of The Fund so it could
continue to provide assistance to entertain-
ment professionals. The 1907 Fair, opened by
President Theodore roosevelt, raised nearly
$64,000. The 1917 Fair was opened by Presi-
dent Woodrow Wilson, who pressed a button
in Washington, D.C. The button unfurled
flags of the united States and its allies. The
performance was the Star Spangled Banner,
sung by louise homer.
In 1916, the Motion Picture Campaign
for The Fund created a “roman Spectacle”
production of Julius Caesar in the natural
amphitheatre in los Angeles. There were two
roman legions and hundreds of dancing
girls in the cast headed by William Farnum,
Tyrone Power, and Douglas Fairbanks. Fifteen
thousand dollars was sent to The Fund. The
Actors’ National Memorial Day was organized
in 1919 to thank the entertainment profession
for giving so freely of its time and talent to sell
war bonds. Four hundred thousand dollars was
donated to The Fund.
Nineteen twenty-seven brought the
first Fund benefit under the Actors’ equity
Contract. The play was Porgy. In 1928, The
Actors Fund home was relocated from Staten
Island to englewood, New Jersey. By 1959, the
home needed to be expanded. It was rebuilt
as a modern structure, which was dedicated
in 1961. The Percy Williams home closed
its long Island facility and constructed a new
wing at The Actors Fund home in 1975, fur-
ther expanding The Fund’s ability to provide
services to the elderly.
ChANGING tIMES
By The Fund’s Centennial there was a
tremendous need for a nursing facility as well
as for professionalizing the delivery of human
services to the entertainment community.
Thanks to two spectacular productions of
Night of 100 Stars in 1982 and 1984, which
featured hundreds of artists, The Fund raised
$1,801,000 most of the money needed to
construct a new nursing wing in englewood.
The new wing opened to great fanfare in 1988
as Philadelphia’s edwin Forrest home merged
december 1, 2014 15
with The Actors Fund home and contributed
$1,750,000 for construction and endowment.
When the AIDS crisis hit in the 1980s,
The Fund was there to help people in the
industry who were affected. It helped found
Broadway Cares in 1988, and established its
own AIDS initiative. In 1990, the third edition
of Night of 100 Stars raised $390,000 to help
meet the needs of those suffering with hIv/
AIDS. Broadway Cares/equity Fights AIDS
remains The Fund’s strongest partner in caring
for people with this devastating disease and
other health issues.
A PERIOD OF NEW GROWth
The 1990s was a dynamic decade for The
Fund. The Phyllis Newman Women’s health
Initiative was created. The Free health Clinic
was founded to provide health care to the
uninsured and under insured. The Aurora
(now The Dorothy ross Friedman residence)
in New York City and The Palm view in hol-
lywood were developed to provide affordable
housing to clients in need. The Actors Work
Program (AWP) was brought under The Fund
umbrella in 1998, and The Artists health
Insurance resource Center (AhIrC) was
created to provide a comprehensive Web-based
informational guide to health insurance.
In 2003, The Actors Fund Work Program
launched the “looking Ahead” program to
advise younger performers on how to plan
for their future. The Free health Clinic in
New York was expanded and renamed The Al
hirschfeld Free health Clinic in honor of that
great theatrical artist.
The Fund continues to evolve with
and respond to the particular needs of the
entertainment community. The Dancers’
resource, a program founded by Trustee
Bebe Neuwirth in 2007, provides services
that address the distinctive needs of dancers
facing health problems and injuries. In 2008,
The howl emergency life Project (helP)
was created to provide emergency financial
assistance and social-service support to artists
who have participated in the annual howl
Festival or who make their careers in New
York City’s east village and lower east Side
arts community. And in 2009, The Actors
Fund housing Development Corporation was
established as a subsidiary of The Fund, with
a mission to develop affordable, supportive,
and senior housing for the performing arts and
entertainment community.
Today, The Actors Fund is the national
nonprofit human-services organization that
provides for the welfare of all entertainment
professionals. The Fund helps people in film,
theater, television, music, opera, and dance.
It assists performers, as well as those who
work behind the scenes. Its broad spectrum of
programs include comprehensive social services,
health services, supportive and affordable
housing, employment and training services, and
skilled nursing and assisted-living care. The
Fund also makes emergency grants for essential
needs. Administered from offices in New York,
los Angeles, and Chicago, The Actors Fund’s
mission is to help “all professionals in perform-
ing arts and entertainment. The Fund is a safety
net, providing programs and services for those
who are in need, crisis or transition.”
The Fund’s future is bright and the new
projects and programs under exploration are
exciting. To quote founder harrison Grey
Fiske: “even in prosperous times, the need for
an Actors Fund arises.” N
16 the salvation army greater new york division 67th ANNUAL GALA
the community service award jameel mcclain
JAMeel McClAIN is one of the most
electric and versatile linebackers in the
National Football league. In 2012/2013,
Jameel helped the Baltimore ravens reach, and
ultimately capture, Super Bowl XlvII, and this
season he is projected to start for the New York
Giants with the hopes of leading “Big Blue”
back to the playoffs after a two-year hiatus.
While he is at a great place in both his career
and his life, Jameel did not get to where he is to-
day without hard work, incredible perseverance,
a big dream, and an even bigger heart.
In and out of Salvation Army shelters as a
youngster in North Philadelphia, Jameel knew
it was up to him to change his life for the bet-
ter, so he adopted “hard work” as his mantra.
he worked hard in high school, both academ-
ically and athletically, and earned a scholarship
to Syracuse university. While at Syracuse,
Jameel worked hard to succeed both on the
football field and in the classroom. however,
when the 2008 NFl Draft came around, Ja-
meel’s name was never called. Instead of letting
this deter him from his dream of playing in
the NFl, Jameel used it as motivation, worked
even harder, and earned himself a spot on the
Baltimore ravens roster the only undrafted
rookie to do so.
As a raven, Jameel recorded 192 tackles,
45 sacks, a franchise record two safeties, and
helped the team to numerous playoff appear-
ances and the Super Bowl. Toward the end of
the 2012 season, Jameel suffered a spinal cord
contusion and was told he may never play foot-
ball again. Instead of throwing in the towel,
however, Jameel continue to work, rehabbed
his injury, and stayed faithful that his NFl
story was not yet complete. After week seven
of the 2013 season, less than a year removed
from his injury, Jameel returned to the gridiron
and started for the remainder of the season.
That is just who Jameel is. In March 2014,
Jameel signed a new deal and will continue
living his story with the New York Giants.
While his own hard work and perse-
verance have earned him tremendous oppor-
tunities in life, Jameel knows that he did not
get to where he is today without the help of
others. To honor those who have helped, and
to uplift those who are less fortunate, Jameel is
committed to giving back to the community.
reaching back to his own personal experience
with homelessness, while in Baltimore Jameel
built a strong partnership with The Salvation
Army as an ambassador of its annual red
Kettle Campaign. utilizing the reach of The
Salvation Army, as well as other community
programs, Jameel also spearheaded his own
annual philanthropic events the “53 Fami-
lies Dinner,” “Jameel McClain Coat Drive,” and
“Kicks for Kids” campaigns. And, even when
working on his platforms, Jameel can always
be found volunteering at the various charity
events of his teammates.
Now in New York, Jameel looks forward
to continuing this tradition of community
service. No matter where his career and life
take him, one thing is certain: Jameel will make
a difference and inspire others to do the same
along the way. N

Brass banding in The Salvation Army is as synonymous with The
Salvation Army as the red kettle at Christmastime. Since The Sal-
vation Army’s inception in the late 19th century, brass bands have
supported The Army’s mission throughout the world, from the smallest of
Salvation Army centers to the largest concert halls.
Founded in 1960, the GreATer NeW YOrK YOuTh BAND has
travelled far and wide, supporting Salvation Army work and spreading the
message of Jesus Christ through music. In addition to tours throughout
the united States, the group has travelled to Canada, Argentina, england,
holland, Italy, Jamaica, Scotland, Spain, and, most recently, Costa rica.
Bandmaster Gordon Ward has conducted the group since 1981,
succeeding famed conductors Terry Camsey and Derek Smith. he is now
joined by Christopher Ward in the leadership of this group.
Famous alumni include Philip Smith, Principal Trumpet of the New
York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Stephen Bulla, recently retired Chief
Arranger of the White house Orchestra and u.S. Marine Band.
From the Plainchants of the early Catholic Church to J.S. Bach’s
Mass in B minor, the human voice has always played an important role
in Christian Ministry. The GreATer NeW YOrK YOuTh ChOruS
was formed in 2005 by Gavin Whitehouse, its present leader. As with the
band, the chorus draws on its membership of young people, ages 13-30,
from throughout the Greater New York area. The group has also travelled
with the Youth Band throughout the u.S., as well as to Canada, Argenti-
na, Spain, and Costa rica. N

special guest performer tony yazbeck
TONY YAZBeCK was born in
riverside, California. As a young
boy, he was captivated by the golden
age of movie musicals, especially the films of
Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. At the age of
four, inspired by these two masters, Tony was
convinced that he could emulate his idols and
started dancing. This training continued, and
after relocating with his family to Pennsylvania,
Tony auditioned for the Tyne Daly revival of
Gypsy and was cast on the spot as a Newsboy
and debuted on Broadway at the age of 11.
Tony spent two years with Gypsy, first at
the St. James Theatre, and then moving with
the show to the Marquis Theatre. This run
provided quite an education, in theater and
life, where Tony learned from the best, soaked
up the feeling of the Broadway community,
and cemented his love for performing. After
Gypsy, Tony expanded his studies to encompass
a broad spectrum of performing disciplines,
attending performing arts high school, and later,
studying at Point Park university and Cincin-
nati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).
Moving to New York City in 2000, before
he had even finished unpacking or landed an
apartment, he was cast in the national tour of
Annie Get Your Gun, starring Marilu henner,
and turned right around and departed for the
road. Beginning in 2001 when he settled back
in New York City, Tony began to amass an im-
pressive list of credits on Broadway, Off-Broad-
way, with National Tours and regional theaters.
Tony’s Broadway and tour credits in this new
chapter of his career include the Trevor Nunn/
Susan Stroman revival of Oklahoma, Never Gonna Dance, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and
numerous City Center encores! productions.
After laying this groundwork, Tony made
the decision to focus on principal and leading
roles and before long was cast in the role of Al
in the original revival cast of A Chorus Line. As
a result of his involvement with A Chorus Line,
Tony is featured in the documentary film, Ev-ery Little Step, which recounts the story of this
landmark musical interwoven with the casting
of the revival company. Tony had an amazing
year in the show and departed A Chorus Line
to play Tulsa in Gypsy in the critically lauded
production, starring Patti luPone. This move
fulfilled the dream of playing Tulsa that Tony
had held since childhood and his first Broad-
way experience with the show. Tony’s perfor-
mance of Tulsa generated many accolades and
garnered him an Outer Critics Circle Award
nomination. Moving forward, Tony has main-
tained a presence as a leading man in New
York with starring roles on Broadway in Irving
Berlin’s White Christmas (Phil Davis) and
Chicago (Billy Flynn), along with rave reviews
for his portrayal of Gabey in On the Town at
City Center encores!
Whether on Broadway or elsewhere, Tony
continues to seek out new and interesting
opportunities to create with challenging artists.
he joined a gifted ensemble of actors from
Chicago and New York and got to exercise
his comedic chops when he played the dual
roles of Wally Winston and Doucet in Animal Crackers at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. In his
continuing quest to create with like-minded
artists, Tony collaborated with another dream
ensemble of actors, under the masterful
direction of Tina landau. utilizing landau’s
viewpoints technique, Tony created the role of
Andrew in ricky Ian Gordon’s autobiograph-
ical musical, Sycamore Trees, at the Signature
Theatre, receiving a helen hayes Award. Soon
after, Tony was thrilled to be asked to join
landau again when he appeared in landau’s
Antony and Cleopatra at hartford Stage.
While welcoming new opportunities to
stretch and create, and endeavoring to find new
and challenging work of any sort, Tony is at
heart a song-and-dance man and continually
searches for new vehicles to challenge him in
that vein. recently, he had the opportunity to
create the role of Captain Billy Buck Chandler
in a new revival of My One and Only at Con-
necticut’s Goodspeed Opera house, where,
along with the great personal joy of performing
this tour-de-force role, he was rewarded with
great notices and a Connecticut Critics Circle

private coaching and master classes in acting,
audition technique, and dance. In recognition
of his success with students, Tony is presently
part of the prestigious YoungArts program of
the National Foundation for Advancement in
the Arts, where he has had the opportunity
to teach young artists, as well as to serve as
assistant director to Bill T. Jones on his many
YoungArts concerts.
Tony would like to thank his family and
his friends for their immense support and
belief that the dreams of a child can come
true. he is truly blessed to be part of such a
wonderful art form. N
Award. Immediately following this personal
milestone, Tony moved on to the famed St.
louis Muny Theatre, where, as Don lock-
wood in Singin’ in the Rain, he relished the
opportunity to recreate Gene Kelly’s signature
role and sing and dance in the rain in front of
11,000 theater goers each night.
Tony has had the privilege of performing
at Carnegie hall and many of the fine night-
club and concert venues in New York City. On
television, Tony has been featured on As the World Turns, All My Children, and in the first
season of the NBC hit series, Smash, about the
creation of a Broadway musical.
This past summer, Tony starred in Kiss Me Kate at the royal Albert hall in london,
which was filmed by the BBC and will air at
Christmastime. In August, Tony made his solo
show debut at 54 Below with his song and
dance show, The Floor Above Me.
Tony is currently starring in the critically
acclaimed revival of On the Town as Gabey at
the lyric Theatre on Broadway.
Tony has always believed in perform-
ing with truth, courage, and vulnerability
and having that be the forefront of what is
communicated, either on stage or on film.
Tony has a gift for teaching young artists and
has found great joy sharing what he can with
these students as often as possible through

In 2015, The Salvation Army will celebrate
its worldwide SeSQuICeNTeNNIAl
or 150th anniversary!
It was on July 5, 1865, that a former
Methodist minister named William Booth
founded the movement that would evolve into
what we know today as The Salvation Army
changing the world of charitable faith-based
giving forever.
One hundred and fifty years later,
Salvation Army officers, soldiers, and lay staff
serve in 126 countries, speaking 175 languages,
providing basic-needs and other programs
and services to millions of men, women, and
children throughout the globe. Meanwhile,
The Salvation Army red shield, Christmas
red kettle, thrift stores, and emergency-service
canteens have become universal icons of caring
and compassion, while The Army’s work with
the poor, hungry, homeless, veterans, disaster
victims, and so many others has been
lauded, and honored, throughout the
world.
Today, in the u.S., The
Salvation Army operates more than
7,500 centers found in nearly every
community throughout the country,
events are being planned to mark the anniver-
sary. Foremost among these is a Sesquicenten-
nial Weekend, July 3-5, 2015, honoring The
Salvation Army’s founding date ( July 5th).
early plans for the weekend include a concert,
featuring Salvation Army musicians and other
musical guests ( July 3rd); a dinner cruise and
river view of Macy’s fireworks display ( July
4th); and a sunrise service held in lower Man-
hattan’s Battery Park, at the site of the plaque
commemorating the first official landing of
The Salvation Army in America ( July 5th).
There will be numerous opportunities for
individual and corporate donors and volunteers
to support these Sesquicentennial activities,
the Sesquicentennial anniversary campaign,
and the exciting plans we have in store in the
future for our programs and services support-
ing the people and communities of the Greater
New York area. visit our website at www.

a century-and-a-half of service to the world: a salvation army timeline
1879 The Salvation Army’s oldest official em-blem, the crest, is unveiled.
EARLY 1900s The Salvation Army red shield is first introduced, its origins believed to be rooted in Canada. The red shield goes on to become the most recognizable, year-‘round symbol of The Salvation Army.
1829 William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, is born April 10th in Nottingham, England.
1865 Booth founds the move-ment that will become The Salvation Army—known in its earliest days as The Christian Mission—in July. With the spirit of a profes-sional soldier, he battles against overwhelming social ills, biased public policy, and ignorance as he ministers to society’s poor and marginalized.
1880 Salvation Army Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven “Hallelujah Lassies” arrive in Battery Park, New York City, from England on March 10th, marking the first official “landing” of The Salvation Army in America. Railton and his “troops” serve as the foundation for the work of The Sal-vation Army in the Greater New York area and across the nation.
1878 William Booth officially renames
The Christian Mission “The Salvation Army,” and its members become known as “Salvationists.”
Brass instruments, a staple of The Salvation Army’s ministry
in the decades to come, are used for the first time.
1898 The Salvation Army be-gins its relationship with America’s armed forces as Salvation Army officers accompany troops to the Philippine Islands during the Spanish-American War.
1900 The Salvation Army’s first major U.S. disaster response takes place in Galveston, Texas, when Salvation Army officers from all over the country are sent there to serve in the aftermath of a cata-strophic hurricane that destroys the city.
1891 Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee places a kettle at a ferry landing in San Francisco to collect money to buy Christmas dinner for the poor. McFee’s efforts would evolve to become one of The Salvation Army’s most endearing symbols and well-known fundraising campaigns — the red kettle at Christmas.
1917 During World War I, Salvation Army
“Doughnut Lassies” (female Salvation Army volunteers) serve doughnuts on the frontlines to American troops in France. The simple doughnut would be-come a symbol of all The Salvation Army was doing to ease the hardships of fighting soldiers on the frontlines. This effort would serve as the basis for Salvation Army “National Donut Day” 21 years later.

a century-and-a-half of service to the world: a salvation army timeline
1965 The Salvation Army celebrates its centennial anniversary.
2001 “Operation: Compassion Under Fire” — The Salvation Army’s emergency response to the World Trade Center terrorist attacks of September 11th — is unprecedented in the history of Salvation Army disaster services. From September 2001 until May 2002, when recovery operations officially conclude, The Salvation Army serves over 3 million meals, utilizing the efforts of more than 7,000 officers and staff, and more than 32,000 volunteers, representing a total of almost 1 million volunteer hours.
2005 The Salvation Army introduces
its “Doing the Most Good” brand promise to accompany its red
shield logo.
2007 The International Social Justice Commission, brought into being by the General of The Salvation Army, opens in Manhat-tan and serves as The Salvation Army’s strategic voice to advo-cate for human dignity and social justice for the world’s poor and oppressed.
2015 The Salvation Army celebrates
its worldwide 150th anniversary.
1934 Evangeline Booth, fourth daughter of William and Catherine Booth, becomes the first female General (international leader) of The Salvation Army. Previously, she had served as Salvation Army USA National Commander from 1904-1934.
1947Friends and supporters of The Salvation Army in Greater New York gather for the first time to celebrate the holidays and acknowledge the efforts of good people, marking the begin-ning of what would become an authentic New York holiday tradition that continues to this day — The Salvation Army Greater New York Division Annual Gala.
1954President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaims November 28-December 4, 1954, as the first National Salvation Army Week, declaring, “Among Amer-icans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedi-cation to the cause of human brother-hood.” Today, National Salvation Army Week takes place each year in May.
1939 As World War II approaches, The Salvation Army co-founds the
interfaith movement that leads to the formation of the United Service Organization, or USO.

Every neighborhood has a story to tell … and secrets to reveal! Our “Saturdays in the City with The Salvation Army” walking-tour series uncovers these stories,
and more, while exploring some of New York City’s most compelling neighborhoods and landmarks.
Debuting in 2011, the walking tours have grown steadily in popularity, attracting people of all ages
and ethnicities, each united in a common interest in learning more about the historical and cultural
attractions of the communities in which they live and which comprise this great, diverse city.
Previous tours in the series have included Harlem; Brooklyn Heights; the Chelsea Meat Packing
District; the “Three Squares” (Union Square, Gramercy Park, and Madison Square Park); Times
Square and the Theater District; Chinatown, Little Italy, and “Little Ireland”; and the mid- and
south-end areas of Central Park.
Early registration is recommended! For more information, or to reserve your place on the spring tour,
contact Sharon Smith Ibello at (212) 337-7345 or at [email protected].
All proceeds from the tours benefit Salvation Army programs for individuals and families in need in the Greater New York area.

FIRST OFF, WHAT IS GIVING TUESDAY?
Giving Tuesday is a national day of giving supported by a conglom-
eration of nonprofits, corporations, and other community-minded
organizations, designated each year for the Tuesday after Thanksgiv-
ing. Just as retailers come together for “Black Friday” and the online
shopping community for “Cyber Monday,” the giving community joins
forces for “Giving Tuesday” a kind of unofficial “kickoff ” to the
holiday giving season.
Last year, The Salvation Army Greater New York Division, a
founding partner in this special movement, chose Giving Tuesday to
launch its newest holiday initiative, the Red Box Campaign.
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE RED BOX CAMPAIGN?
This unique initiative provides multi-item gift boxes a veritable
Christmas-in- a-box! — for individuals and families in need through-
out the Greater New York area. A typical Red Box contains items
such as non-perishable foods, chocolates, tote bags, hats, gloves, socks,
toiletry kits, toys, and more.
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THIS YEAR’S RED BOX CAMPAIGN?
Individuals, groups, and companies have the opportunity to purchase
Red Boxes either online, via mail, or right now tonight with the
assurance that all donated boxes will be distributed in time for Christ-
mas to the families and individuals they’re meant for.
There are several ways to support this exciting campaign, which runs
through Christmas Eve:
: Visit SalvationArmyNY.org and click on the Red Box Campaign
logo
: Fill out the cards at your seat at this evening’s Gala and drop
them into the red kettle at your table
: Mail your donation to “Red Box Campaign,” 120 West 14th
Street, New York, NY, 10011
A donation of $65 will help provide one Red Box for a family in need; $130 will provide two Red Boxes; $325 will provide five; and $650 will provide ten. Ultimately, there is no maximum amount that can be given to those in need.
WHAT IMPACT WILL MY DONATION HAVE?
Considerable! Your Red Box donation(s) will brighten the holiday
season for struggling New Yorkers all across our area. Imagine the joy
these struggling families and individuals will experience when they
realize they have a Red Box, filled with food and gift items, to open
this Christmas?
You can help make this campaign our second annual a rousing
success! In this season of giving, let’s all come together in support of
our neighbors in need!
TOMORROW, DECEMBER 2nd, IS GIVING TUESDAY!
SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THOSE IN NEED BY JOINING
THE SALVATION ARMY’S 2014 HOLIDAY RED BOX CAMPAIGN!
