Inferences – What are the characters/author really saying? Predictions – Do you think what you know will happen later in the story?

Annotating your reading. You will be expected to annotate while you read. It will be your choice as to how you do that. You may do this directly in your book, or you can complete the corresponding page in your packet. That will be your choice, you just need to ensure to mark and EXPLAIN your thinking for the following:

o Annotate 2-3 inferences that you make with the this code ?!o Annotate 2-3 questions you have while you read with the code of ? o Annotate spots where you are able to read like a writer and are able to visualize a

scene or description clearly based on word choice with the code o Annotate changes in any of the characters using the code of a stick persono Annotate changes in the evolution of the conflict with the code of the plot

Additionally, there will be several journal entries that you will record in writer’s journal. These are not outlined on the calendar above.

1) Having a loving family fulfills our basic human needs.2) All members of a group should be treated equally.

3) It is never alright to cover up the truth.

4) It is unnatural for people to have an attachment to someone they don’t really know well.

5) The purpose of life is to strive for, and eventually reach, our goals and dreams at any cost.

6) If someone shares a secret with you, even if it is about something illegal, it is never alright to tell anyone about it.

After completing the “Before Reading” column on your own, get into small groups and record your group members’ names on the back of this sheet. Using the chart below, as a group, tally the number of “yes,” “no,” and “?” responses for each question.

Once you have collected your data, discuss those issues about which your group was divided. Make your case for your opinions, and pay attention to your classmates’ arguments. It’s okay to disagree – it’s not okay to be disrespectful.

Journal Entries – Not all of these will be completed more than likely; however, we will reflect on the majority of these questions as we read. This may be in the form of a class discussion, a journal entry, or homework. Journal 1: Are dreams and goals important? Why? How do you think people feel when their dreams aren’t fulfilled? Do some people have unrealistic dreams? Why do you think this happens? Journal 2: What is the difference between being along and loneliness? Write about a time or situation in which you felt particularly alone or lonely.Journal 3: What do you think would happen if everyone were free to do whatever they pleased? How far should the government go to protect our lives? Journal 4: Is there really such a thing as true happiness? How would you define true happiness? Journal 5: Describe a time you wanted something so badly you would do almost anything to get it. How did it feel to get/not get what you wanted? Journal 6: What are the characteristics of a good leader? What are the characteristics of a bad leader? How can leadership be used for evil? Journal 7: Most people feel that honesty is the best policy. Is it ever okay to lie? If so, when is it okay? Journal 8: Sometimes the course of our lives can be changed in an instant. Whether it is a change for the positive or negative, it can sometimes bring surprising results. Discuss a time when major change was introduced into your life.Journal 9: What is courage? What makes a hero?Journal 10: Describe the room you would like to have if you were not allowed to “exist.” What would you want in it? Take into account that during the day, no one can know that someone is living in your house. Also include what you would do while other people are playing and having fun in the outside world, when you are not allowed to leave your house.

This will be checked at the conclusion of the novel. I will check this for completion one day after we finish reading the book in class. Do not procrastinate! Review this while you are reading and add to it. Do not wait until the day we finish to start thinking about the characters because you need proof of the trait you are using to describe them!
