The Harmonica by ReadWorks

Lola's brother is in a band. They practice in the garage every day after

school. They make so much noise that Lola can't do her homework. She

bangs on the garage door. She shouts, "Be quiet!" But they don't even hear

her. Lola can't stand it anymore. She needs to go for a walk.

The woods behind Lola's house are peaceful. Just a hundred feet from her

house, her brother's noise fades away. There is a little stream just behind her

backyard. On weekends, she and her friends make paper boats to race in the

stream. They like to pretend they are pirates, racing on the sea. Next to the

stream, she sees a squirrel eating a nut.

"Hello Mr. Squirrel!" she says. The squirrel is scared, and runs away.

Lola hears a bird singing. It sounds like a happy bird. She wonders what kind

of bird it is. It is red, with a fuzzy head. Maybe it's a robin? She will have to

remember to look it up in the encyclopedia when she gets home. Lola tries to

sing along with the bird. She doesn't know the words to his song.

Something shiny beside the stream catches Lola's eye. She jumps over the

stream and picks it up. It is a thin rectangular box made of metal. There

she can't make it out. She wipes the grime off with her sleeve. It says, "Old

Fashioned Blues Harmonica." Lola has heard her brother's friends talk about

harmonicas. They are a very simple musical instrument. Anyone can play a

song on a harmonica, even without a band.

Lola rinses the harmonica off in the stream. With the dirt gone, it looks as

good as new. She dries it on her sleeve. Lola puts the instrument to her

mouth and blows. It makes a high-pitched, whistling noise. She moves her

mouth and blows again. Now the sound is deeper. She covers the back of it

with her hand. Now when she blows, it sounds different. She blows harder

and softer. She moves her hands and her mouth. Pretty soon, she is playing

a song. It may not sound as good as the bird's but the robin doesn't seem to

mind.

That night, Lola shows the harmonica to her brother.

"Cool!" he says. "My music teacher taught me how to play the harmonica a

little. Do you want me to show you?"

"Sure!" says Lola.

The next time her brother has band practice, Lola plays along. Now that she

has an instrument of her own, the noise doesn't sound so bad.

Day 1 Reading:

Vocabulary from "The Harmonica":

• instrument - a thing used for making music

o Many children learn to play a musical instrument in school. • noise - a loud, harsh or unpleasant sound

o I couldn't focus on my reading because there was so much

noise around me. • practice - to repeat something in order to get better

o I will practice the piano every day so that I can learn to play

well.

Show that you know what instrument, noise, and practice mean by writing a complete sentence using each word:

1. What is something that you have practiced in your life so that you

could learn to do it better?

2. What are some musical instruments that you know about?

3. What is a noise that annoys you?

BONUS: Circle the vocab words in “The Harmonica” story.

**Walk around the house pretending to practice the instrument of your choice.

Day 2 Math: Learning Target: I can identify the attributes of different shapes called polygons.

This week and next week you will be learning about flat (2-D) shapes called polygons. The

straight edges in polygons are all connected so they form a closed shape that has vertices and angles. Polygons have parts called attributes. These parts give each polygon its look and name. These parts include the edges, vertices, angles, right angles, and parallel lines. The parts we are focusing on this week are the edges, vertices and angles.

Read the vocab words and study diagrams below to help you fill out the table on the next page.

Vocabulary Word Bank:

Vocab Word Definition Example

polygons flat shapes with three or more straight edges that have vertices and angles

attributes the parts of a shape such as its edges, vertices and angles

See all the examples below

edges the sides of a polygon

vertices a shape’s corners where two edges come together (a single corner is called a vertex)

angles a figure formed by two edges coming together

right angle a square corner or an angle that measures 90 degrees

parallel lines lines that are always the same distance from each other and do not cross

Day 2 Writing: Writing the Body of a Letter

Learning Target: I can write the body (message) of a friendly letter.

The body of a friendly letter is where you write the message or the information you want to send. You ask and answer questions about who, what, where, when, and why. One way to begin the body is with a question or a question and a statement such as:

• How are you?

• How are you? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you. • How have you been? • How have you been? I miss you.

Here is an example:

How are you? I haven’t seen you in such a long time.

Now you try. Start a message to your teacher.

Next, tell your teacher how you are doing.

I am doing well, but I miss school.

Your turn. Answer it honestly. Use your own words.

Then, write about what you have been doing and/or what you have been learning. Tell about something new or exciting in your life. Example:

I have been very busy doing schoolwork. I like watching all the video learning links. An exciting thing that is happening is a bird made a nest on my patio. It will be fun to observe the changes. I hope I can see the baby birds when they hatch! My mom isn’t very happy about the mess the birds are making though!

Your turn. Write some facts about yourself. (If you need more room, write on the back)

Now, wrap up your message with an ending. Example:

That’s what has been happening in my life lately. Please write back! I would like to know what you’ve been up to. I look forward to hearing from you!

Your turn. Write your ending.

Day 3 Reading:

Fluency Focus: Phrasing and Expression

When reading sentences, good readers “scoop” the words into phrases to make it sound like they are talking. When readers use good phrasing and expression, they are able to understand the text better.

Example sentence from “The Harmonica” with scoops:

“On weekends, she and her friends make paper boats

to race in the stream.”

TIP: When reading, take a small pause after

each scoop, then continue reading.

Task 1: Read the sentence below. Then draw in “scoop lines”

under each group of words, and practice reading the sentence.

“They like to pretend they are pirates, racing on the sea. “

Task 2: Use “The Harmonica” story to practice reading with expression and phrasing.

Day 3 Writing: Learning Target: I can write a complete letter with all five parts.

Hi kids! On Monday, you learned about the five parts that make up a letter.

Here are the five parts:

1. Date

2. Greeting

3. Body

4. Closing

5. Signature

You also learned about how a letter is organized and you practiced labeling the five parts

of a letter.

Did you know that when you are writing a letter, you can use your hand to help make

sure you have included all of the five parts of a letter?

We call this the 5-Finger Rule. Each finger represents a part of your letter.

• Thumb = Heading (Date) • Pointer finger = Greeting

• Middle finger = Body

• Ring finger = Closing

• Pinky finger = Signature

Hold up each finger one at a time to check that your letter includes all five parts.

For example:

✓ Hold up your thumb to check that you wrote the date (heading) at the top of your

letter. ✓ Hold up your pointer finger to check that you wrote a greeting. ✓ And so on . . .

2nd Grade: Learning Packet for the Week of May 4th-8th

There is an extension activity and video on the Ferndale School District website that you can do to help you remember this handy memory tool!

Today, you are going to write a complete letter (with all five parts!) using the body of a

letter that you wrote to your teacher on Tuesday. Simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Using the letter writing template provided, write the date on the heading line at the top right of your paper. Remember to put a comma between the day and the year! Like this: June 24, 2008

*Notice that June is capitalized because it is the name of a month.

Step 2: On the top left of your paper, below the date, write a greeting to your teacher. Always end your greeting with a comma, like this:

Dear Mr. Bloom,

*Notice that we start our greeting with a capital letter and Mr. Bloom is

capitalized because it is the name of a person.

Step 3: Using the body of a letter that you wrote to your teacher on Tuesday, copy the

sentences from each of the four boxes onto the lines below your greeting to form the body of your letter.

*Remember:

o Indent the first word of your first sentence. o Start each sentence with a capital o End each sentence with correct punctuation.

Step 4: On the line below the body of your letter on the right side, write your closing. The first word of your closing should have a capital letter and it should end with a comma, like this:

Fondly, OR Yours truly,

Step 5: On the line below your closing (NOT next to) sign your name, like this:

Darth Vader Congratulations! You just wrote a letter to your teacher!

Day 4 Reading: Find your packet from last week and re-read the “Barn Sour” story. Today we will be comparing the conflict of two stories, “Barn Sour” and “The Harmonica”. Good readers compare, or look at what is the same or similar, in the stories they are reading. Review:

Problem Solutions

“Barn Sour”

Jenny and Jake, her horse, had a conflict.

Jenny wanted to go somewhere that her horse did not want to go.

• Jenny pulled on the horse.

• Jenny listened to her Dad and realized she could not make Jake move.

• Jenny took Jake back to the barn.

Practice: Write in the problem and solution for “The Harmonica”

We can set up a one-time call or weekly sessions to help support you each step of the way.

Parent Support Groups A school counselor would facilitate a weekly online Zoom meeting between parents to share ideas, resources and get help with common "distance learning" struggles like academic work organization, social and emotional support, setting boundaries with your children, etc.

Weekly “Coffee with the Counselor” Q&A sessions Early Learning/Elementary: Tuesday 8-9am Middle/High School: Thursday 8-9am
