From the PrincipalDear Parents and Friends

Welcome to Week 5.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our Junior Girls water polo team which defeated MFAC 15-1 in the grand final on Monday 4 November. Well done to players Katelyn Brown, Bonnie Jarrott, Makayla Jarrott, Lily Johannessen, Poppy Johannessen, Talia Marshall, Claire McCulloch, Samantha Perry, Jordan Turner and Saxony Walker who are in Years 5 to 8, on a fantastic season in which they were undefeated. The grand final was a rough and tough game, but the girls continued their unified approach and supported each other until the final buzzer sounded; a wonderful example of teamwork spanning the Primary and Secondary Schools. A special thank you to coach Kylie Johannessen who supported and inspired the girls every week.

Congratulations also to our Senior Girls basketball team which also won their grand final match against Caloundra SHS! The girls played hard to come away with a 44-19 win. Thank you to all parents, students and staff who went along to support the team and to Caloundra SHS for a good game. Well done to our ILC players and to their coach, Chloe Coughlin.

Prize Giving Night is Fast Approaching

Secondary School families are reminded that students in Years 7 to 12 are expected to attend Speech and Prize-Giving Evening on Thursday 14 November at Lifepointe Baptist Church, 186 Wises Road, approximately 300 metres north of the College entrance. It will be a wonderful night of celebration, with over 200 students being presented with awards. We do hope you have invited extended family and friends for what will be a great showcase and celebration of the talents and achievements of our students. Please be seated for the musical prelude from 6.10pm. Students in Years 7 to 9 are to be dressed in regular day uniform, with boys in ties. Students in Years 10 to 12 are to wear blazers. No hats are required. Please ensure that shoes are freshly polished. Please note that the relatively early start time, aimed primarily at assisting those with younger families, may create some difficulties with the timing of the evening meal. Please ensure that students have a substantial snack and are well hydrated before the event and note that the P&F is hosting a supper at

the conclusion of the program. As the program is informative and entertaining, and with respect for presenters and awardees, families are requested to stay for the duration of the evening, which has been designed to flow as expediently as possible. Speech night is a premier event on the College calendar where we celebrate the breadth of achievements for the year and acknowledge the graduation of our Year 12s. Thank you in advance for your support of this significant occasion.

Year 12 Valedictory Arrangements

Please note that, in keeping with College tradition and to honour our exiting Year 12 cohort, there will be a number of changes to routine next Friday 15 November. Year 12 student drivers will be permitted to park in the Drop and Go zone adjacent to the bus turnaround area. As this will create difficulties for other traffic in that area, it is requested that those using the Drop and Go area next Friday (morning only), do so at the designated zone adjacent to the Worship Centre. Thank you in advance for your co-operation and support.

In addition, on that Friday morning, all students (Prep to Year 11) will participate in the Walk of Faith ceremony, where our Valedictorians stroll through an honour guard, reflecting their Immanuel years and their development as they reach the “beginning of the end”. They finish this journey, literally and symbolically, at the steps to the Worship Centre, where they will engage with family and friends for the Valedictory Service.

Every blessing to the Class of 2019.

Years 3-6 Celebration of Learning and Year 6 Graduation

Our special Primary School evening will take place at Lifepointe Baptist Church on Wednesday 27 November, commencing at 6.00pm. Students will be required to wear formal uniform and will sit with their class teachers until the end of the evening. The Year 6 Graduation will be held as a separate event on Tuesday 3 December at 2.00pm in the Worship Centre and is for students in Years 5 and 6 and invited guests only. Please contact Lisa Bond in the Primary School Office T: 5477 3402 or E: [email protected] if you did not receive an invitation.

Australian Business Week (ABW) Enterprise Education

We are excited about our involvement in the Australian Business Week (ABW) Enterprise Education later this month. Australian Business Week (ABW) Enterprise Education programs incorporate computer-simulated business environments, along with trade displays, promotional videos, company reports and oral presentations. In the safety of a virtual world, our Year 10 students will assume management roles in running a hotel chain and make decisions (good or bad!) that affect business

performance. The program will replace the student’s regular curriculum for a one-week period (25-29 November), allowing students to immerse themselves in the virtual business world. Due to the experiential nature of the learning, rather than a lecture, it is invaluable in encouraging teamwork and a sense of responsibility, exercising decision-making skills and boosting confidence. Secondary School students are on the cusp of adult life, but often a very long way from having the skills and confidence they need to negotiate life as an adult. ABW can have a tremendous impact on these students, allowing them to experience the business world in an adult role, via a safe, simulated environment. At the successful completion of the week, including attendance every day, and involvement in the program, students will gain one QCE credit towards their Queensland Certificate of Education. We are grateful for the support of this program from some prominent Sunshine Coast business leaders and supporters of the College who will join us throughout the week as Business Mentors and attend on Friday 29 November as judges.

Farewell Pastor Kathrin

It is with a mixture of joy and sadness that I received Pastor Kathrin Koning’s resignation letter last month. I am joyful for the opportunity that has emerged for Pastor Kathrin in the Anglican Church of South East Queensland, to go through a process of formation towards ordination, but sad for our community who will be all the poorer for her departure. Kathrin will be ordained deacon on Saturday 7 December and her ordination comes with a license and appointment by the Archbishop to the position of Chaplain at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, beginning in January 2020.Kathrin has given twenty-five years of loyal and dedicated service to the College. She is an extremely capable and accomplished teacher and Department Head and, most importantly, through her role as College Chaplain, has developed warm and caring relationships with colleagues, students and parents alike. She will be greatly missed within the Immanuel community.

Immanuel College Council

At their October meeting, Immanuel College Council unanimously voted on the Office Bearers for 2020, as Dr Roger Morris had advised his decision to step down as Chair at the end of 2019. From January 2020, Mrs Amanda Yeates will be Chair of College Council and Mr Matt Webster will assume the Vice-Chair role.Amanda Yeates, a Civil Engineer, is also the Deputy Director-General, Infrastructure Management and Delivery for Transport

and Main Roads, Queensland. Amanda oversees the delivery of the integrated program of infrastructure projects and the maintenance and operation of the state-controlled road network. Matt Webster is a longstanding member of the Immanuel community, including serving as Youth Co-ordinator from 2004 to 2007 at the College; he now operates a property development business and also consults in organisational development in Australia and the Pacific.Thank you to Amanda and Matt for accepting these roles, and to Roger for his tireless work as Council Chair since November 2016. One of the main foci for College Council this year has been the new Strategic Plan for 2020 – 2024. We look forward to sharing the new strategic directions with our community early next year.

Immanuel Image

This year’s Immanuel Image yearbook will be distributed during the last week of November to all students via their classroom or Home Group teachers. If, for any reason, students do not receive a yearbook by the end of term (Wednesday 4 December), please ask for a copy at Main Administration.

Remembrance Day

Monday 11 November is Remembrance Day, celebrating more than a century since the signing of the armistice at the end of WW1, and I encourage all members of our College community to pause for a moment and give thanks to God for those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. Secondary School students will observe a minute’s silence in honour of the fallen during their Worship on Wednesday 13 November, and this observance will occur in the Primary School during a special assembly at 11.00am on Monday 11 November in the Primary School Hall. In addition, Year 11 students Keely Lamont, Britta Madsen, Harrison McHugh and Jack Trentepohl will attend the Remembrance Day Service at the Cotton Tree Cenotaph with their teacher Mrs Rita Rainnie on Monday 11 November to lay a wreath on behalf of the College. Poppies are available at the sub-school offices for those students who would like to purchase one. Lest we forget.Yours in Christ

Good-Bye = God Be with You!Last Friday, Year 12 students had their final day of lessons (… and a lot of treats, and lunchtime fun in wading pools!). By the time the next newsletter is published, they will have become Valedictorians, Old Scholars.

It’s such an exciting time of ‘lasts’; a time, too, of cheerful anticipation, while just as much laced with a sense of sadness as an era ends; plus, a hint of daunting at what lies ahead.

As it turns out, I’m graduating from Immanuel Lutheran College with the Class of 2019; and all the sentiments I’ve just listed resonate with and in me.

Looking back as I leave, gives cause for much gratitude at having been part of this vibrant and caring community, where highs and lows have interwoven our journeys. You have a firm place in my heart, and I shall delight in incidental meetings, as time goes by.

For now, I want to leave you with the verse that was at the heart of another event last Friday: Primary School worship:

“Don’t worry, because I am with you. Don’t be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you.

I will support you with my right hand that saves you.”Isaiah 41, 10

May this be your charter.

Whatever changes and challenges life brings, be it in your personal life or beyond; whether at the end of a given year or anytime else, we have a sure foundation in God.

Taking on human form in Jesus, God’s solidarity is ours; the gift of his Spirit closer than the air we breathe.

And so I wish you well, graduating Year 12 students, your parents and every single other person that makes up Immanuel. You have graced my work here with kindness, warmth and trust. Thank you!

Good-bye = “God be with you”.

Are you a ‘blamer’? As the pace of Term Four increases and we head towards the frantic silly season, I found the following article and short animation timely.

Primary SchoolIt was with much excitement that the major building works in this phase of our program came to a conclusion at the end of last week. I am certain you will agree that the refurbished Jasmine building, covered walkway and Primary School Quad, look spectacular – what a difference some grass makes! We are currently working with a landscape

designer to develop the vision for the Primary Quad as a play space, with works expected to take six weeks during the second half of 2020. In the meantime, we look forward to the grass settling, prior to being opened for play in the next week or two.

I sincerely thank parents for their support and patience during this phase of the construction which has caused significant disruption to pedestrian movement.

We find ourselves at the time of the year where some children are becoming quite tired and ready for holidays. Behaviour and expectations can start to slip. I would ask that parents continue to support us in reminding children that high standards of behaviour, both in and out of the classroom, are still to be maintained during these last weeks of the term including wearing our College uniform with pride, including boy’s hair worn at the appropriate length. Short term exemptions for uniform items can be obtained from Primary School Administration.

2020 Years 1-6 Class Orientation Morning

On Monday 2 December, all students in Years 1 to 6 in 2020, will take part in our orientation morning. The morning involves new and existing students in the Primary School spending a short period with their 2020 class teacher. It allows an opportunity for teachers to share information with their new class about the exciting year ahead at Immanuel, as well as begin that important community-building process within the classroom. Families will be notified of 2020 class placements in Years 1 to 6 in Week 8. Prep 2020 families will receive their class placement notifications in early December.

SCISSA

Tomorrow, students in Years 4 to 6 will participate in our final Gala Day for 2019. It has been an outstanding year of achievement for the Primary School across a range of sports and I am extremely proud of each student for giving their best when representing the College. Special thanks to Mr Michael Johnson and Mrs Maree Gilbert for their leadership and organisation of these important College events.

We will also welcome Mr Timothy French to the College in 2020 in the role of Primary School Co-ordinator (Wellbeing). Mr French joins us from Canberra, working most recently in a Student Engagement role for the ACT Government. He has a wealth of experience in pastoral care and wellbeing and will be a significant addition to the Primary School. We sincerely thank Mr Greg Forrest for his service acting in the role for Semester Two, 2019. I am certain you will agree he has done an outstanding job with our students in the area of pastoral care and wellbeing.

We will briefly farewell Mr James Harth at the end of this year as he completes his contract in Year 4. We are looking forward to welcoming him back later in 2020. Mrs Lauren Cronin will be taking leave for all of 2020 and will return to the College in 2021. Mrs Venz also remains on leave for the first half of next year. I would sincerely like to thank them both for their dedicated service to the College and wish them well for their continued period of parental leave.

Outdoor Education 2020

Vacation Care bookings are now being taken for the December / January holiday period. If you need care during the holidays, please contact Ms Tamara Scutts on T: 5477 3418 or E: [email protected] as soon as possible. A reminder that for Years P to 6, the final day of school for 2019 is Wednesday 4 December. School resumes for 2020 on Tuesday 28 January.

Primary School Stationery

The start of the school year is busy and occasionally stressful for families. We believe the way in which we as a Primary School ensure our students have the resources and stationery they require to engage in learning should be as easy as possible. Once again in 2020, our student stationery requirements will be managed by the College with parents not required to place a stationery order online with our supplier. This will ensure:

• All students start the year with everything they need • All students have the same quality of stationery and books • There is capped pricing so no difference in cost from year level

to year level • Peace of mind for parents • No waste with over ordering • The environmental impact of individual student boxes is removed

Students will only need to supply a pencil case of their own choosing and headphones (Airpods are not accepted). Please feel free to contact Mrs Jodie Hayat E: [email protected] if you have any questions.

Years 3 and 4 Camps

Students in Years 3 and 4 will enjoy camp this week and next respectively as part of their outdoor education program. Year 3 will attend camp at Luther Heights from today until Friday, and Year 4 students will head to Camp Currimundi from 11 to 13 November. It promises to be exciting for all involved. Special thanks to the

Years 3 and 4 teachers for giving up their family time to allow this invaluable outdoor education experience to occur for our students.

Thank you for the continued support of your child’s journey in the Primary School.

Australian Business Week – Year 10 (25-29 November)

Week 8 will see Year 10 students involved in a business simulation program called ABW (Australian Business Week). The ABW program is designed to encourage independent and co-operative learning skills and to develop an enterprise mindset prior to entering the workforce or proceeding to further study. Students will be divided into teams and will spend the week:

• Managing a business through a computer simulation; • Learning from guest speakers from business and the community; • Developing a new product of their own invention; • Creating a video and trade display to advertise that product; • Delivering a verbal and written report of the week’s activities; and • Interacting with business people and teachers as facilitators.

Each team will compete against the others to operate a business simulation over a two-year period. In order to succeed, students learn all the basics of business operation from profit and loss through to planning and marketing. On the last day there will be a trade display by all the companies. The program is an intensive learning experience which aims to be challenging, enjoyable and very rewarding for all involved.

Final Week Program – Years 7 to 9 (2-4 December)

During Week 9, a special end-of-year program has been devised for our students in Years 7 to 9. This will aim to maximise teaching and learning time, and also offering a selection of meaningful and enjoyable activities that provide a fitting end to Term Four. Please note that students will complete their final exams for Mathematics, Science and Humanities during this week. In addition, opportunities will exist for guest speakers, House activities, sports, music performances, a Worship service, digital coding and more. The week is designed to offer students a range of rich learning experiences and is considered compulsory in terms of attendance and participation. I trust it to be a valuable and fun end to the year for our students.

This month on SchoolTV - Resilience

Resilience is one of those skills that all kids need and should have. It refers to their ability to cope and adapt in situations when confronted with challenges such as adversity, trauma, tragedy or even stress. It is essential to their mental health and wellbeing as part of their journey to adulthood. It is a skill that can be learnt from an early age through the support of an adult role model.

Being resilient does not mean that your child will not experience any difficulties. But it will better equip them to manage those situations. Over-protective parenting can be viewed as being unhelpful towards the building of resilience. Although this may be a natural instinct, potentially experiencing failure is all part of the process. Encouraging children to take healthy risks will help them trust their capacity to deal with uncomfortable situations and increase their capacity for courage.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will gain an understanding of how to support their child’s brave behaviour to help them adapt and build resilience. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact College Counsellor Tarnya Mitchell on T: 5477 3430 for further information or seek medical or professional help. Here is the link to this month’s edition https://immanuel.qld.schooltv.me/newsletter/resilience

Share the Dignity – “It’s in the Bag” On Saturday 23 November, between 10.00am to 12.00 noon, we are holding a Share the Dignity – It’s in the Bag morning tea in the Environmental Centre at Immanuel Lutheran College. We will be serving coffee, tea and cake for $5.00 with money raised being used to purchase more items to fill bags. We will also raffle a Clarins pack valued at over $200.00, a massage voucher, a facial voucher and more. If you know of a business that would like to donate something, please let me know. Please save the date and invite your friends.

Donations from this initiative will be given to women who are homeless, at risk or experiencing domestic violence. The first year we did this we made 57 bags and last year, we made 115 bags. This year we want to hit the 150 mark! All donations are used to support local women. It’s about Sunshine Coast women helping Sunshine Coast women with purpose, fun and celebrating friendship.

The concept is simple. Choose a handbag you no longer use and fill it with items that would make a woman feel special. Pop in a thoughtful note or Christmas card to show that someone cares. You can donate any items to make up bags or choose from the list of essential items below. When you see toothpaste or shampoo on special, throw one in with your groceries. It’s that easy! You can make up a bag or bring items to fill bags. There will be a table where you can write a note to pop in each of the bags.

If you would like to help in any way, or have any questions, please contact me via E: [email protected] or T: 5477 3457. Donations may also be left at the College Shop.

Thank you.

Tuckshop Volunteers

We are looking for more volunteers for our tuckshops. If you are able to help fill a few spots for the rest of this term, (highlighted in yellow) please let us know. The more volunteers we have, the more baking and food preparation can be done on site. No experience is needed as tuckshop staff are more than willing to assist. We welcome any time you can give, whether it is once a week, fortnight, term or month, if only for a few hours. We have grandparents, dads, aunties, uncles and mums, and all are welcome. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents and become part of our College community. Please consider volunteering in 2020.

We need help from drop-off time – 8.30am to about 1.45pm. A tasty morning tea and lunch is provided. You do not have to handle money. Duties are to serve the students, fill lunch bags, make sandwiches, or cook a batch of cupcakes or spaghetti bolognaise. Your help ensures that more, healthy cooking can be done in the tuckshop.

Please come and join our team! If you would like further information, please contact me. You are assured of a very warm welcome

2020 Uniform ChangesIn 2020, a new hat will be introduced for students in Prep to Year 6. This hat will replace the current formal hat and also the sport hat. As the Year 4 to 6 formal hat will be phased out at the end of 2020, existing stock has been marked down from $40.00 to $20.00 – under cost price!

In 2020 a unisex braid hat for students in Years 7 to 12 will be introduced. In 2020, Year 7 students will be issued this hat, with all students expected to wear the new hat from 2021. Current stock of formal hats will be sold at $50.00 which is well under the cost price of $95.00 for those students in need of a replacement hat.
