6 Marks of Discipleship: Daily Prayer, Weekly Worship, Bible Reading,

Serving in and Beyond the Congregation, Nurturing Relationships,

and Giving a Tithe and Beyond.

“Worship is both the culmination of discipleship and the matrix from which discipleship is formed. Disciples

worship not out of obligation, but out of eagerness. (pg. 95 “Power Surge: Six marks of Discipleship for a changing

church. Michael W. Foss)

We continue our review of the 6 Marks of Discipleship as outlined in Michael Foss’ book “Real Faith for Real Life:

Living the Six Marks of Discipleship”. This month we take a closer look at the second mark of Discipleship: Weekly

Worship.

The Gift of Sabbath…Genesis 2:3

“The sacred meeting time called worship happens when God’s Sabbath gift to us meets our reverence, and praise is

our response to this giver and gift.” (pg. 41)

Our Soul’s Renewal… Psalm 95:6-7

“Without worship, we confuse the temporary satisfactions of pleasure for the eternal joy of God’s gift of purpose for

our lives. And our soul begins to shrink. In our culture, we have talked ourselves into the idea that weekly worship is

optional. Unfortunately, the Bible tells us something very different. Worship is essential. To be truly, fully human is to

worship—regularly.” (pg. 43)

Honoring God in Worship … Matthew 4:10

“Christian faith is deeply personal, but never private. We honor God when we worship with others in church. From

the beginning of time, God has sought a people to worship him.” (pg. 46)

Worship as Witness …Mark 12:42-44

“We do not witness to a perfect people. Instead, we witness to frail people who come with the hope of feeling the

changing touch of God…Christian worship is a silent but powerful witness to the world that hope still exists…” (pg. 51)

Worship as Weekly Compass … Hebrews 3:6

“Worship, for the disciple of Jesus, is not optional. It is essential.” (pg.53)

“When I practice worship as a spiritual compass, I strive to live a five-step process:

First step…reflect on the occasions of anger and hurt from the past week…name them before God…The second step is

for God to show me “my stuff”… The third step is to pray for the persons involved… The fourth step is to ask God to

tell me what would be a healthy response to those events… The last step is to develop a strategy for making amends

when that seems necessary…commit myself to acting on that strategy.” (pg. 55-56)

I hope that you find this outline helpful and may it encourage us to engage more in our weekly worship with God. May

we also better understand the importance and significance of worship, as a source of strength, comfort and direction for

our lives.

Peace, Pastor Mike

few moments of your time, you can give the gift of life for patients in crisis. Kitty Hagglund & Joanne Kopchik will be available at the after service coffees to sign you up.

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY Coming June 13th & 14th! St. John's will partner with Total Ministries Mobile Food Pantry to provide much needed food to

families in our area. WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Please put this date on your calendars. Sign-up sheets will be at various locations around the church as the date approaches. Volunteers are needed to organize, pack, and hand out the food bags. Let's have another successful event and feed a hungry Spartanburg!

Summer Music! We need special music for the

summer. There are opportunities

for instrumental music for Preludes

and for vocal and instrumental

music for the offertory time. There

is a sign-up sheet on the Music

Notes Bulletin Board in the hallway to the Fellowship

Hall. Please choose a Sunday, sign your name, and

share your musical gifts with the congregation. It is

important to have a choir in the loft for the summer.

We often have visitors who are not familiar with our

service and it is helpful to them, as well as to me at

the organ, to have a choir to help lead the service.

Please consider sitting in the choir loft to help. There

are no processions, no choir anthems, and we can find

a robe for you! Contact FRANKIE DEAL (978-7815;

Endowment Committee: The St. John’s Endowment Fund

Committee will soon begin taking applications for distribution for the 2018

campaign. This fund has been established to Engage God in Our Daily Life by

providing funds to worthwhile ministries, most of which are not directly

associated with St. John’s Lutheran Church.

God has commanded us to assist in the well-being of others. From Philippians

2:4 “Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also to the interest

of others” and Matthew 25:40 “ And the King will answer them, “ Truly, I say

to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me”.

In the recent past, distributions have been granted to groups such as St. John’s PEP, Boy Scouts, Hope

Ranch, Greater Spartanburg Ministries and Divinity Ministries. In each of these cases, funds from the St.

John’s Endowment fund help to support those in need and groups dedicated to supporting the betterment of

others.

As our team starts to assemble for this year’s drive, we need the names of groups with contact information to

contact to submit applications. Or simply ask a group that needs financial assistance with a special project.

The 2018 application will be ready soon and will be posted on the St. John’s website. Our team for this year

consists of Tricia Boyd, Cheryl Pettis, Kathie McKenzie and Benji Mills with advisement by Pastor Mike.

New this summer … Wednesday Prayer Services. To help promote the 1st Mark of

Discipleship, an opportunity for members to pray for each other will be given every Wednesday

from 12:15-1:00pm in the nave. This service is running until August 29th. Our regular Wednesday

schedule will resume on September 5th. During this summer prayer experience there will be soft

music playing in the background as participants will take a prayer guide that will help them pray

for St. John’s, pray for the needs of others as the Holy Spirit leads, and reflect upon what God is

saying to each person. There will be pages dedicated to embracing A.C.T.S. (Adoration/Praise, Confession,

Thanksgiving, Supplication/Intercession). There will also be a sheet containing those members and friends on our

church’s prayer list and an opportunity for each participant to lift up prayers for themselves. This will be a self-led

prayerful experience and open to everyone. Please make plans to at least try this unique opportunity to deepen your

relationship with God as we practice this 1st Mark of Discipleship…Prayer.

2018 Commitment Card God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance,

so that always having enough of everything,

you may share abundantly. 2 Corinthians 9:8

Daily Reminder of my/our Financial Commitment When we engage God in our daily life, we become grateful for the

many blessings bestowed on us. As we worship, share, respond, and

serve our Lord, we grow in our appreciation for the gifts we receive.

Following the direction of the Holy Spirit, we commit now this

amount of financial support for the ministries of St. John's in 2018.

The 6th Mark of Discipleship is "Giving a Tithe and Beyond", so that is why we remind you about your 2018 commitment card that you received last year. God has truly blessed us in so many ways and this is our opportunity to return thanks to God through our financial offerings. As we prayerfully do this we grow closer in our relationship with God because the Holy Spirit gives us the confidence we need as we face the unknown future. Thank you for making the time to be a committed steward of the gifts God has given you.

Wednesday Summer Bible Study Does it sometimes seem that

Bible place names are as hard to believe in as Tatooine or the Emerald City? The

Bible tells us about events that actually happened, and it’s far easier to realize what

was going on when we understand WHERE it really happened, both in relation to

other places of that day and to places in the 21st century.

The changes to the maps over time have been dramatic. On Wednesdays this

summer, we are going to look at the places where Bible events happened and see

where that is now and also notice what else happened in the same place. We welcome

friends of all ages to join us, one week or every week, to learn a bit more about Biblical Places.

We will enjoy multi-media presentation and fun discussion. This Bible Study takes place every Wednesday

(except July 4) at 11am-12pm in the PLC Conference Room, just before the Midweek Prayer Service at 12:15pm.

The Thrivent Choice® program is a charitable outreach program. Since 2010, more than $370 million has been distributed to more than 20,000 churches and nonprofits nationwide. We would like to thank all Thrivent members who have directed their Choice Dollars to St. John’s Lutheran church. The following is a brief explanation of the program. Choice Dollars Details The Thrivent Choice® program lets members recommend where some of Thrivent Financial charitable outreach funds go by directing Choice Dollars. Thrivent members become eligible for Thrivent Choice® based on Insurance premiums; contract values and Thrivent volunteer leadership. Summer break is here and our traditional Children’s

Sunday School curriculum has ended!

We are thinking outside of the box this year and are trying

something new and FUN! Each Summer Sunday has a different

theme (see schedule) and there will be hands-on activities and

plenty of learning to keep kids involved and energized! Each

Sunday will be led by a different person who may have special

expertise in the topic! Kids Pre-K through 5th are encouraged to come and have fun while getting to know

everyone better! Our youth members will be assisting on Sundays as well. Pastor Mike has tied in a Bible lesson

for each Sunday theme which he will go over in the children’s sermons. All generations are encouraged to hop

downstairs at 10am to see what excitement is happening! This is a summer to HAVE FUN with our focus to grow

everyday disciples! Contact Erica McCarthy [email protected] with questions.

Another summer for improving the children’s wing! This time we are painting interior classrooms and would love anyone with painting skills to help out! It’s not all work?there are definitely moments of playing around and great conversation too! Please contact Erica McCarthy at [email protected] if you are a willing helper in the month of June! Exact date TBD.

Vacation? What vacation?! Summer doesn't mean the end of Sunday School!

Once again this summer, the ADULT CLASSES will be joining together in the PLC during the Sunday school hour for learning,

discussion, and fellowship. We have two video-based classes lined up: Jeff Lageman and Benji Mills lead Saying Yes: The Practice of

Christian Discernment, by Albert Haase, followed in July by the classic Making Sense of Scripture, by David Lose, in a small group

discussion format. In addition, young adults and young families have the chance to sit with Pastor Mike each Sunday in the

Fellowship Hall for informal chats about topics that resonate in their lives-- engaging God while raising kids, growing a marriage, and

balancing everything can be a challenge. Bring your questions for conversations about all the ways God is faithful and present daily.

Join us Sundays beginning June 3 until September 2 for either of these thoughtful, faith-forming gatherings.

Fireside Chat with Pastor Mike … This opportunity will be geared toward Young Adults and Parents of young families. This group will

gather in the fellowship hall and follow an informal conversational format as we discuss topics that the group will come up with

during their first meeting. The hopeful outcome of this experience is that the participants will grow deeper in their understanding of

how to better engage God in their daily life experiences.

HISTORY IN ACTION or . . . A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!

JUNE 2018

Robin Hunsinger

Pictured below are a group of soldiers receiving communion in the South Pacific. The following article was found on

the back cover of an October 3, 1943 Sunday bulletin in our church archives. The title is 'When We Take Communion'

and it is a reminder of the best way to commune in church.

We can't afford to be careless or

thoughtless about communion. This is the

most sacred thing in our lives. We should

do some serious thinking about ourselves

before we come to the Lord's Supper.

There are many evil things which we have

done, and many good things we have failed

to do. When we get a clear idea of our

shortcomings, we eagerly desire

forgiveness. This is the right state of mind

in which to come to communion.

In our service of public confession we

openly admit our faults. We declare our

confidence in God's willingness to cleanse

us of all unrighteousness. We say that we

wish to begin a new period of effort in holy

living. No one should come to communion

without this confession.

When the administration of communion has begun, you may have to wait for some time before it is your turn

to go to the altar. These moments are too precious to waste in trivial thinking. Open the service book to one

of the psalms, such as the fifty-first, or read some of the hymns in the sections for repentance. Say a prayer

asking that God will make you fully conscious of your need of a larger measure of His grace.

As you receive the bread and wine at the altar, concentrate your thought on the words being said, "Take and

eat, for this is the body of Christ, given for thee. Take and drink, this is the blood of the New testament, shed

for thy sins." Let your faith in Christ take full possession of you. The Lord Jesus comes to you with His

loving, strengthening power, as He has always come to believers.

Upon returning to your pew, bow your head in a glad prayer of thanksgiving. You have received spiritual

energy for new life. The conclusion of the service is a splendid expression of the congregation's

thanksgiving for the great gift just received.
