Prep II Week 13 Timetable Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 15 minutes Dictation As we do not have any spellings this week we are going to focus on our dictation. Come and listen to Camilla reading us a limerick. Remember the top tips for dictation:

• Write as neatly as possible even though you are going to be writing at speed

• Check your work when the teacher reads the whole text through

• If you miss a sentence, leave it out and follow along at the teacher’s pace

30 minutes Read To Your Child Read two or three books to your child. After each book, chat about your favourite parts of the book. Invite Your Child to “Read” Look at a book with your child. Practice looking for tricky words. Make sure you look at the comprehension tips.

30 minutes Phonics Over the last few months we have worked through a number of digraphs and split digraphs. I would like you to write a list of as many digraphs as you can and as many words that fit with the digraph. See my example below. Oi- Coin, soil, point, spoil, voice, toilet etc. Ai-Rain, Spain, Train, Plain, complain etc How many digraphs and split digraphs can you remember? Maybe you can make your own phonics book. You can also play this super fun buried treasure game to practise your blending with the digraphs.

30 minutes Handwriting This term we have been working very hard with our black and yellow thinking hats to self-improve our handwriting. We know that it is very important that we continue to use the joins we are so confident with in our handwriting. Listen again to our Michael Rosen poem from yesterday, Three Limericks. We can see the verses of the poem underneath. I want you to think about the joins you need to practise and choose the verse that contains the most of these. You can use my joins to help you consider how they should be formed if you need to.

30 minutes Independent reading Encourage your child to read independently for 30 minutes. Ensure that they have got a comfortable space and have chosen a book of an appropriate level for independent writing.

45 minutes Maths Project WALT: Measure length using centimetres (cm) and metres (m) as our standard units of measurement. I would like you to put your white thinking hat on and write down everything that you already know about length and measurement. I would like you to choose some objects around the house that you can measure the length of. The first step is to estimate the length. Remember that 1m=100cm and 1cm=10mm. I would like you to record your estimations and measurements in centimetres today. You can record your estimations on our measuring fun sheet. The next step is to measure and see how close you were with your estimation. When you are using your ruler or tape measure, remember the importance of accuracy. Ensure that you place each item at the very start of your measuring tool.

45 minutes Creative Writing WALT: we are learning to write a story (narrative) using a beginning, a middle and an end. This week we are looking at writing a narrative. A story. I would like you to write a story about a plane crash. Similar to the one we wrote before. Have a listen to the sound clip attached and the photograph. Write down 5 words about how the sound of the airplane flying through the sky makes you feel. Next look at the image of the plane. What could have happened? Where could the plane be? Write down a few ideas. Write down some adjectives that may help you describe the image. Let’s have a go at introducing our setting (airplane) and location (where the plane has crashed) You could also add in your characters. Remember this is just the beginning of the story so we only need to introduce

45 minutes News WALT: write a newspaper article about a volcanic eruption somewhere in the world. When you are writing your own newspaper article follow the tips below:

• Make your headline short and snappy.

• In the first sentence sum up what the story is about.

• Write your report in the third person (about someone else) and the past tense.

• Split your newspaper report up into paragraphs to help the reader clearly understand the information

• If you use quotes to make your report more interesting, don't forget to use speech marks!

• Use a photo with a caption to give the reader more information.

• Fill your newspaper report with both facts and opinions. Facts give the reader all of

45 minutes Volcanic eruption Today we are conducting a volcanic eruption experiment. First, let’s remind ourselves what a volcano is by exploring volcanoes with National Geographic. Let’s create a volcanic eruption together.

You will need:

• Washing up liquid • Vinegar • Plastic cup • Bicarbonate of

soda • Red food colouring

*You could build a paper Mache volcano and put the cup inside the crater for extra effect if you like! As you work through the different stages of the experiment you may want to use this volcanic

45 minutes Story telling time To build on our learning from this week’s research project we would like you to conduct a search for a traditional tale from the country that you have researched. Your task is to then either record a video of yourself telling this story through acting or interpretive movement. Another option is to create a comic strip or a story board to retell this tale.

Once you have completed your estimations and measurements have a go at the worded problems on your sheet. Now apply your knowledge of measurement to this fun problem solving challenge 'A rod and a pole.'

the characters and the setting. Use your 5 senses to describe people and places. The middle is the most exciting bit... it’s when something MUST happen! What happened to the plane? How did it crash? Where did it crash? What happened to the characters? You can role play the middle of your story with your adult and use the story mountain planner to draft your ideas. Write the ending of a narrative so that it captures the audience’s attention. The ending is the part when we solve the problem. How are you going to get home? Will someone rescue you? Is a helicopter on its way? Do you walk across the jungle to safety? Remember to use the story mountain to help you!

eruptions recording sheet. Before we conduct the experiment can you make a prediction about what you think will happen? STEPS

1. Combine the vinegar, water, dish soap and 2 drops of food colouring into the empty soda bottle

2. Eruption time! Pour the baking soda into the mixture and take a quick step back

During step 2 is a great time to complete your observations. When the reaction has finished you can write your hypothesis.

1 hour Maths Number Today we are going to be looking at fractions. We know that if we have a pizza and we cut it into 2 we are left with 2 halves, if we cut it into 4 we are left with 4 quarters. When we see a written fraction we must remember that the top number is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator.

To calculate a fraction of a quantity we need to divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator. For example, to work out

2/3 of 33 I would divide by 3 which equals 11, and multiply by 2 which equals 22. Have a go at finding the fractions of these quantities. You can use the division strategy that you are most confident with to support you, this might be grouping and sharing or the bus stop method. Challenge!! Can you complete this fractions wall activity to apply your learning from today’s activity.
