Homework Policy

Students are required to complete 50 minutes of homework a night. In addition, 30 minutes of reading homework will be assigned Monday – Friday.

Late/ Missing Homework Policy:

5 points will be deducted every day an assignment is late. - Students have 2 days to turn in a late assignment before that assignment will be

recorded as a 60. - Students will have 5 days to turn in a late project before that assignment will be

recorded as a 60.

Once a student has 2 late assignments, every assignment after that is automatically a 60.

Late assignments do not accumulate from class to class.

Late/Missing homework assignments will be immediately communicated in the agenda.

The second day an assignment is late; the student will be required to call his/herparent letting them know that the assignment has not been turned in.

Course: Reader’s Workshop

Teacher: 5th Grade

Prerequisites and Standards: Each student must have the ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.

Materials: - Just Right Text- Reader’s Notebook

Grading:A: 100 - 93 Assignment Weight:B: 92 – 85 Tests: 55%C: 84 – 77 Class work/Quizzes: 35%D: 76 – 70 Homework: 10%F: Below 70

Each student’s grade will be based upon participation in the mini-lesson, independent reading, student/teacher conferences, and take-home reading. Using a 4 point rubric, each student will have the opportunity to earn 24 points biweekly for the 6 weeks grading period. Rubrics will be sent home on a biweekly basis in Tuesday Folders. Additionally, reading logs will be assigned weekly to assess independent reading and comprehension at home and will be send home weekly in Tuesday Folders. Students will also have a test every Friday comprised of the Time For Kids newspaper as well as other items covered during the week.

Course Content:- Building a Love For Reading- Concentrating on Important Reading Behaviors and Strategies- Literature Discussion Groups- Test Preparation- Reading Projects/ Teacher’s Choice- Non-Fiction Unit of Study- Genre Studies- Character Unit of Study

Misconduct Policy:All students are expected to behave in a way that shows respect for himself/herself, as

well as others. The student code of conduct, which is spelled out in the Union County Handbook will be followed.

Attendance Policy:All students are expected to follow the County Board of Education Attendance policy.

All students with excused absences (parent or doctor) will be allowed opportunity throughout the six weeks to complete any missed assignments. If there is a problem with completing make-up assignments, please see the teacher for further discussions.

Materials: - Writer’s Notebook- pencil

Grading:3: Writing exceeds expectations.2: Writing meets expectations.1: Writing is below expectations.

Each student’s grade will be based upon participation in class discussions and activities, use of writer’s notebook, use of the writing process, and completion of final writing projects in both writing and content area classes.

Course Content:- Narrative Writing- Personal Essay- Informational Text- Persuasive Essay- Writing to Convey Ideas and Information- Literary Essay- Teacher’s Choice
