Even though I have been with First & Main for only 11 months, I can only imagine the positive changes those who have been with us since day one have seen. A lot has changed in two years: the needs of the community, staffing and the number of residents we serve has increased. August has been the busiest month that the community has seen since opening day. This is a popular time of year for residents and families to look for placement as children are heading back to school and the season is changing before the winter season comes into full effect. As the community grows, we thank each of you for continuing to welcome all of the new faces. First & Main Of Metro Health Village is looking forward to working with Nurse Practitioner Ranganath K. Athri, Dr. William Silverstone and Dr. Stephen Dallas to better serve the residents of the community. The philosophy of these three level up to our philosophy within our very own community. They take the time to listen to what the resident needs and what the staff needs to help keep residents healthy and comfortable. I want to thank the staff and community for making First & Main the best community to be a part of whether you are a resident, family member, staff member or visitor. We strive to serve the Wyoming and surrounding area and make it feel like home versus just a facility. Let us know how we can go above and beyond because after all, this is your home and we work for you.

We would like to thank everyone whodonated toys during our recent Car Showand Toy Drive. There were so manydonations that we were able to split thembetween two Child Life Programs.Residents from the first and second floorwere able to go to The Helen DevosChildren’s Hospital and visit the Child LifeProgram. Child Life Programs offer safe,stress-free places for patients and theirsiblings to play. In a hospital setting thisminimizes fear and stress, can helpprovide education prior to medicalprocedures and offer support duringprocedures, support the patient in thecontext of his or her family, culture, anddevelopmental stage, and provide supportfor families and siblings who may beaffected by diagnosis, illness, trauma, orgrief. We were able to explore the ChildLife Office/Library, and the first floor of thechildren’s hospital (which many of us havenot seen since the building completion).Thank you to everyone who participated inthis great event; we can’t wait to do itagain next year. If you would like moreinformation on the Child Life Departmentand their service or how you can donate tothe program, please contact the Child LifeServices Office at 616-267-0100.

Why Exercise IsImportant to SeniorsExercise enables us to remain

as healthy and engaged in ameaningful life as possible. Aswe age, our muscles weaken; ourbones weaken; ourcardiovascular and circulatorysystems are not as efficient; ourbalance lessens; our eye sightworsens. All our systems beginto decline. These natural deficitsof aging make us much moresusceptible to the dangers ofinactivity. In addition, once thebody stops moving, the rest ofthe organ systems are likely todecline and one can developpneumonia, infections, bedsores, and other life threateningillnesses. Finally, exercise helpselevate mood and mentalcapacity. Even if an elderlyperson is not on bed rest, arelatively sedentary lifestyle cancause these same effects but at aslower pace. We are meant tomove. We offer many fun andactive ways for everyone at First& Main to stay healthy. Join usin the Physical Therapy Gym forfun cardiovascular workouts orask us about our HURequipment. We also offer WiiGames that are a great formof exercise.

We had a BLAST Tie-Dyeing shirts for ourWoodstock Anniversary Celebration! Itwas a messy process, but the results wereamazing!

Tie-Dyeing is messy work, but worth it!Being careful and getting the right amountof saturation is key.

What a fun day to sit in the Courtyard andmake beautiful art that we can wear! Ican’t wait to see the results!

Story CubesStory Cubes have

taken our creativityto another level. Weroll the dice and

build our story based on thepictures we see on them. Thehighlighted words were the wordsgiven to us. Please enjoy our storywritten by Ruth, Martha andKayleigh.

Three amazing ladies enteredthis year’s Time TravelingOlympics. They are the reigningchampions and are trying to takethe gold for the 6th year in arow. Their secret to success istheir Submarine named Ravenwith its fast speeds and greatalarm system. The TimeTraveling Olympics have beenaround for 100 years since 3017.The way the Olympics work isyour team is given an artifactthat you must travel back intime and find the exact momentit was created. This year Martha,Ruth and Kayleigh were given atreasure map from the Vikings inIceland. The team loads up theRaven with all the suppliesneeded for the dangerousjourney. They strap themselvesinto their seats and got ready forthe plunge. Ruth was the ship’scaptain and Martha was thenavigator. Kayleigh was theirassistant and provided snacks.Ruth readied the engines whileMartha laid out the maps.“Everybody buckled up andready to Rock and Roll?” Ruthasked. Martha and Kayleigh gavea thumbs up and off they went.

They plunged under the waterand they were instantlyconfronted by a giant uglysquid. The squid wrapped hislong tentacle around thesubmarine. Everything isshaking off the shelves and theteam had no time to scream.Martha grabbed the camera andflashes the squid hoping to scareit away. The flash went off, theshaking instantly stopped andthe squid swam away. They allsqueal with happiness and thennotice they are approaching thebeaches of the times of theVikings. Ruth directs thesubmarine off the waves andonto the beach. The landing issuccessful and the team vacatesthe submarine.

They gathered their suppliesand started walking the beach. They noticed Viking Helmetsand goblets, always a good sign.As they were wandering theyused the map to guide them. They are just about to reach the“X” that marks the spot whenthey hear talking. They freezeand listen carefully. Two Vikingmen were talking. They all snuckaway and ventured back to theirsubmarine. As we approach thebeach we realize oursubmarine’s alarm system is“cawing” They race to it to findit’s in flames. They attempt tosplash water on it, it’s nothelping. Just then it began torain. After an hour or so the firewas put out. Ruth assesses thedamage. “It will take months tofix!” Well, I guess we will hangout here with the Viking men.
