Message from the President Welcome everybody to the 2015-2016 Annual General Meeting of Community Living – West Northumberland (CL-WN). This marks our 57th year in service to the community. This past year proved to be another follow-up success to the previous year’s supports and many activities. As President of CL-WN, I wish to thank the members, people supported and their families and caregivers, donors, funders (Ministry of Community and Social Services and Northumberland United Way), volunteers, staff, managers, Executive Director, and Board for a job well done! The success we enjoy is due to the dedication and hard work of all of these people so, once again, a heartfelt thank you. Remember to visit us online at www.communitylivingwestnorthumberland.ca and www.facebook.com/CommunityLivingWestNorthumberland Chris Godsell President of Community Living – West Northumberland Message from the Executive Director 2016 is quickly drawing to a close. As I reflect on the past year and look at the wealth of pictures, updates, and notes I’ve received, I am always amazed at how people continue to grow and get connected. Community members have rallied to support our new sports program, PULSE, by volunteering their time, making donations, participating in events, and sharing their space. Local police and OPP joined our Benchwarmers baseball team for two community baseball games. It was truly an amazing experience for everyone. This involvement from the police and plans for future events is very much appreciated. Passport, Link-Up, and Day Trippers continue to support people to participate in a variety of activities locally and on much anticipated trips out of town. We have also partnered with a local dance studio to provide hip-hop dance lessons, which has generated a lot of excitement!

At the Employment Assistance Resource Network (EARN), we were fortunate to receive federal funding for a second year which allowed us to increase the number of people we are supporting, and expand their employability skills and ability to work in competitively paid jobs. Amazing support from Trent University’s Psychology Department helped us finalize our Emotional Intelligence curriculum, Facilitator’s Guide, and Training Manual. Watch for this new training opportunity as we promote the benefits of Emotional Intelligence. The Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) continues to be very busy with their modernization projects. The projects continue to build on creating inclusive communities. This year MCSS introduced initiatives related to Sheltered Workshops which indicate a commitment to shift Ontario towards more inclusive options, such as employment and meaningful community participation. Through the Employment and Modernization Fund (EMF), which is part of Ontario’s three year $810 million investment strategy for developmental services, 23 projects were funded across the province to help developmental services agencies enhance their employment support programs. To better support people with disabilities, the Province has created the Partnership Council on Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities, which will work with and encourage employers to hire more people with disabilities. Over the next year, the government will develop a provincial employment strategy for people with disabilities. The government continues to build on its previous investments in social assistance by increasing social assistance rates by 1.5 per cent for people with disabilities relying on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). I would like to join Chris in expressing our sincere appreciation and thanks to everyone connected to our organization for their continued support. With your help, we are able to continue to support the members of Northumberland County. Cathy Timlin Executive Director of Community Living – West Northumberland

Three adult children and a grandson make his life complete. Chris is proud to serve as Chair of the Board on the Community Living – West Northumberland Board. “It is my way of giving back to the community”. LYNN MCMILLAN – VICE CHAIR Lynn joined the Board of Directors in the summer of 2010. She is very aware of the important services provided to the community by Community Living West Northumberland. PATRICIA LYON, RN; MSc. – DIRECTOR Patricia graduated from St Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Peterborough. She completed a Baccalaureate at Ryerson and a Master’s Degree in nursing at University of Toronto. Patricia has had a varied career in acute care, long-term care and rehabilitation nursing. As a clinical nurse specialist at Toronto Rehab, Patricia specialized in Geriatric and Stroke Rehabilitation nursing. Currently, Patricia is employed at the University Health Network as a Nurse Researcher. Her most recent projects include program evaluation and research for the University Health Network (UHN). Patricia’s published research focuses on patient centered care and quality of life issues. Patricia is a strong advocate for person directed care. Throughout her professional career and personal life, she has supported persons with disabilities to celebrate their strengths and pursue their goals. Patricia is Secretary/Treasurer of the International Consortium of Parse Scholars, a nursing theory group. As well, she assists with the breakfast club at St. Joseph’s school. LISA ING – DIRECTOR Lisa joined the Board in December 2011. After studying and working several years in Toronto, Montreal, and overseas, she returned to Cobourg, where she was born and raised, to manage her family’s business which existed in the downtown core for over 80 years. Most recently, she worked in fundraising as the Resource Development Coordinator for Horizons of Friendship, an international development agency which supports community development projects in Central America and Mexico. She holds degrees from Bishop’s and McGill Universities. CATHIE HOUSTON - DIRECTOR Cathie Houston retired from a 27 year long career with Universal Studios Canada. For the last 10 years Cathie held the position of Director of Customer Service and Sales Administration for the Home Entertainment Division of Universal Studios. Cathie is Chair of the Vintage Film Festival of Cobourg and Port Hope, and a Board member on the Marie Dressler Foundation. Film old and new has always been a great interest in her life. She is also Treasurer on the Board of The Citizens’ Council of Hamilton Township. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my position on the Board of Community Living – West Northumberland and involvement in their volunteer opportunities tremendously over the past year. It has given me the chance to meet, work and celebrate with the many wonderful people Community Living – West Northumberland supports.” DICK MALOWNEY - DIRECTOR Dick Malowney is a retired Director of Education with the Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board. Dick spent 33 years in public education, serving in many roles, from teacher to principal, superintendent and, for almost 12 years, as Director of Education and Secretary of the Board. He has served with a number of Universities as Course Director, worked on a number of Provincial level committees and various professional associations. He was also elected as representative to the Ontario College of Teachers, where he served as Chair of a number of the College’s Discipline Tribunals. He has always been a strong advocate for public education and children’s issues within our community. Since his retirement he has been actively involved in a number of volunteer capacities. He served as the President of the Northumberland Children’s Aid Society, President of Northumberland

Respite Services, President of Northumberland Community Counselling, and to the Police Services Board of Hamilton Township. Provincially, Dick completed a term on the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies in the office of Vice President. He was also an active member of the Northshore Probus Club, having served on the executive in different capacities, including Vice President. Dick is a long time resident of Hamilton Township and lives with his wife Brenda and special son Braden. He and Brenda are first time grandparents to grandson Benjamin with their daughter Jennifer and her husband Paul. TERRY STANLEY – DIRECTOR Terry retired from 34 years of police work in June of 2014. His career was split evenly between the Ontario Provincial Police and the Cobourg Police Service. Most of his time with Cobourg Police involved duties as the Community Services officer. Terry was on a number of local committees serving an interesting range of folks from young children to older adults. Although being raised in Peterborough, Terry spent almost all of his adult life in Cobourg. He realized the need for volunteers and the services that Community Living has to offer. He does work and volunteers part-time with Community Care Northumberland and this blends well with work done by Community Living. Terry looks forward to being involved with the other great Board members and staff and having the opportunity to continue serving in this county. KATHERINE LENNON – DIRECTOR Katherine moved with her young family to Cobourg five years ago from Toronto in hopes of living a slower, more family-focused pace of life within a smaller community. They chose an old house that required a great deal of renovations and continues to keep them busy. Katherine joined the Northumberland Family Health Team as a Psychotherapist, and learned that she was carrying their third child! After several busy years, she made the difficult decision to trade in her full-time job for her own private practice to regain the balance between work and family time. Growing up, Katherine was always engaged in her community through fundraising, helping at St. Vincent’s Soup Kitchen throughout high school, and working in the non-profit sector after University. This has been an integral part of her life and represents an important sense of being connected to others. The community has been very warm and welcoming to her family, including her three young children. She was drawn to Community Living – West Northumberland (CL-WN) shortly after moving to Cobourg when her son Charlie, who has Down Syndrome, was only eight months old. Charlie has been a great source of joy in her family’s life and he possesses a natural charisma with all who come in contact with him. But naturally, when he was still a baby they had many questions and some concerns. When Katherine heard about CL-WN, she immediately wanted to connect with the organization and began volunteering over the next few months to learn about CL-WN from the inside out. She also had some of her questions answered, for which she is thankful. She is excited to now have the opportunity to further develop her relationship with CL-WN and the community as a Board member. “Everyone has a ‘risk muscle.’ You keep it in shape by trying new things. If you don’t, it

atrophies. Make a point of using it at least once a day.” Roger Von Oech

THEATRE WORKS DRAMA GROUP

The Theatre Works Drama Group was developed in 2007, operating out of Silver Works Hall in a local church, and performed for people at Community Living – West Northumberland. In the years since, we have relocated and begun renting space at the Northumberland Players Firehall Theatre in Cobourg. We meet every Friday to rehearse and present our play at the theater. Family and friends are invited to come out and see us in action! There have been many different plays over the years, including Snow White, Peter Pan, and The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ring.

In recent years, we have had the opportunity to write plays as a group inspired by other popular stories or plays. Ideas are generated by the group and put into a script with the help of Community Living – West Northumberland Drama Group support staff. Our early plays were short in length, generally five to ten minutes, but over the years the plays have evolved both in content and in length.

The production you’ll see at this year’s AGM, “Mr. and Mrs. Annoying,” was written by Theatre Works member Thomas Patfield. Roles were cast by audition; parts were cast based on experience and interest in the part, among many other variables. This is always a very exciting part of our process and it is done for each production.

We are fortunate to have a volunteer who records each of our plays and every cast member receives a DVD of the play.

Theatre Works instills independence and self confidence in each of its members by enabling people to express themselves in an environment free from judgement, while encouraging the thoughts and ideas of all our members. True friendships and connections are made in our group and we learn so much from, and about, each other. This is a time for all of us to explore our creative side and see just how far each of us can push ourselves in our own dramatic world!

As with any program, our members hope to transition into truly integrated groups in our

Page 11: 57th Annual General Meeting - Asurtec · ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 Mission Statement/Service Principles Agenda ... Guide, andTraining Manual. Watch for this new training opportunity

community. This is an experience that Theatre Works actively encourages. So far, Theatre Works has seen several members move towards joining Northumberland Players by auditioning for roles and joining the cast of their productions. This is a major accomplishment and we all celebrate the achievement alongside these folks!

Theatre Works gets more ideas and new members all the time, and we are very excited to see what 2017 will have in store. We hope you can attend more of our productions in the future!

“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” Muhammad Ali

AKTION CLUB NORTHUMBERLAND

Aktion Club Northumberland has had a successful year as we continue to develop leadership skills to support our community on both local and international levels. We currently have eight active members and are in the process of recruiting more individuals to join us as we head into 2017.

This past year we have had several successful fundraising events which gave us the opportunity to work together as a team and give back to organizations in our community. In March, Aktion Club Northumberland joined Big Brothers Big Sisters for their Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser and raised $546.00. We purchased five Bed kits through Sleeping Children Around the World and donated them to children in the Philippines. We held a Bottle Drive this past May and raised $185.00 which Aktion Club members donated to Victim Services of Peterborough and Northumberland. Lastly in June, we ran our annual car wash and raised $305.00 to put towards future service endeavours in the community. Overall, it was a very successful start to 2016 and Aktion Club Northumberland is looking forward to another year of serving our community.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2016

HELMS/ PULSE We are no longer participating in the HELMS program and have decided to facilitate our own sports program. The people we support have voted and it was a landslide decision for our new name: PULSE (Participation, Unity, and Laughter through Sports and Exercise). Members of the Cobourg Police Services and Ontario Provincial Police joined the Community Living – West Northumberland baseball team, The Benchwarmers, for two games over the summer. A great time was had by all! Fundraisers The organization hosted the last ‘Step Into Spring’ fund raising event in partnership with Sir Sandford Fleming College which raised $1,245.00 in support of Northumberland United Way.

Law Enforcement Torch Run People supported and staff joined the annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run again this year alongside the Ontario Provincial Police, Port Hope Police Services, and the Cobourg Police Services.

Vocal Group Our Vocal Group hosted Christmas and spring concerts for family and friends this year. These concerts are a real source of enjoyment for friends and family. Newsletter Our “News from Community Living – West Northumberland” newsletter continues to be a big hit and is circulated every three weeks.

United Way Funding The organization received United Way funding again this year to continue the work of the Lakeshore Family Network, the Multi Sensory Room, the Summer Child & Youth Initiative, and support for Caregiver Education sessions. We would not be in a position to provide these services without the support of the Northumberland United Way!

Summer Program This year’s Summer Child & Youth Initiative offered six weeks of themed camps that were a huge success and our returning summer students provided full support for up to nine youths each week. Community Activities We added two new opportunities to the community activities roster this year: an active stretching class at the YMCA offers people with limited mobility a chance to enjoy a work out in a small group setting, and laughter therapy was launched this fall with great success!

Page 14: 57th Annual General Meeting - Asurtec · ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 Mission Statement/Service Principles Agenda ... Guide, andTraining Manual. Watch for this new training opportunity

Multi Sensory Room The Multi Sensory Room is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year! Over the past decade, we have trained 485 people to use the room and have had 10,344 sessions in the room. Each year the number of sessions in the room increases. We are delighted with the success of this project!

Facebook In May 2016 we launched our Community Living – West Northumberland Facebook page. Like our page to stay up to date on our services, events, and photos. Find us at:

www.facebook.com/CommunityLivingWestNorthumberland Martial Arts A group of men in the martial arts group were invited to join the “Ontario Breaking Competition” which involved four weeks of practice to hone their skills to break boards using the techniques learned through the Cobourg Tae Kwon Do center. The group members were welcomed into the martial arts community as equal participants. The men won trophies and gained a new respect for their abilities!

Volunteer Work This past year we have had 47 people working at 26 volunteer sites throughout our community. This impressive effort amounts to 9,262 volunteer hours over the year for non-profit organizations

Staffing Update Over the 2015/2016 year we welcomed Carrie Wilson, Charlena Edgeworth, Nicole Michelakos, Sibyl Getz, and Patty Gourd to the Community Living team.

We wished Diana Dennee well for her retirement; we appreciate her commitment and her many years of service with our organization. We all miss her but know she is enjoying her time with family and friends.

We said goodbye to two members of the relief team, Diane Dewey and Michelle Lafferty, and we wished them well with their future endeavors. We also wished Carrie Wilson well as she moved on to a new opportunity. Marita Royce has moved on to new ventures after 26 years of employment with our organization. Marita’s time with us has had great value and she is missed by people supported and staff alike.

You’ve left us too soon

Lindsay Juryn

In our Social Recreation support area we were saddened to lose people this year. Lindsay Juryn was with us for years and was involved in a number of support areas throughout our

organization. We remember her passion for babies and she loved jewelry, especially her beads. Despite being a tiny woman, Lindsay had an incredibly strong will!

Susan Roth

We also lost Susan Roth this year. Susan was with us for many years, starting with the early years when the organization operated as Arc Industries. Susan loved to socialize and loved being

involved in her community. She adored her lunches out and would spend countless hours walking. She loved spending time with her many friends and her family.

Tom Parker

We were taken by surprise at the passing of Tom Parker. He spent his last day in this world with us and he had such a great day! While we cherish this memory, we will deeply miss Tom’s

kindness and sensitivity to his peers and the staff members. He loved to have fun and had a great sense of humour. Tom loved to go out and particularly treasured his trips to McDonald’s and

time spent with his family.

Lindsay, Susan, and Tom are missed by many friends, families, and staff members.
