5/6 Science at St Marys On the 31st of August we did science week. For science we go to St Marys. On the second week we learnt 3 activities, my
favourite activity was at station 3 when we made the Exothermic and Endothermic reactions.
To do the experiment we put 2 table spoons of Calcium Chloride Anhydrous in one corner of a plastic zip lock bag then we put
1 tablespoon of baking soda in the other corner.
Next we poured 15ml of Universal indicator into the centre of the plastic bag and sealed it completely.
We needed to rock the zip lock bag back and forth to cover both powders with Universal indicator.
It started to turn pink and one end was warm and the other was cold. Once it mixed more all of the liquid turned warm, the
air in the bag got warm and started getting hot. A minute later it started making the liquid hot too. There was a gas that made
the bag expand, it expanded so much it almost popped but we unzipped the bag. It was still warm once we had unzipped it
but it got cold later.
Altogether it was a fun day and I hope we do it next year.

Grade 5-6 Science at St Marys
On the 24th and 31st of August, grade 5-6 went to St Mary’s to use their excellent science labs, we
have one last lesson on Thursday. We have been learning about chemistry and how to use Bunsen
burners. The first experiment we did was using Bunsen burners, egg white, butter and water. The
second trip we focused on chemical reactions, we did three different experiments and we learnt
that to make a chemical reaction the two chemicals must like each other. We have learnt a lot
from the past two lessons and look forward to our last one on Thursday.

5/6 Science at St Marys - Bunsen burner
We did an experiment on butter and egg white,
there was a little bit of butter in a test tube and a bit
of egg white in another. We put them on the top of
the Bunsen burner when it was on high and the
butter turned into a liquid and the egg white turned
hard. Later we wrote down
the results.

What's happening
in our classrooms
In Kinder
English:
We are learning to hear syllables in spoken
words
We are learning to hear and say the w
sound
Maths:
We are learning about heavy and light
Social:
We are learning to flush the toilet and
wash our hands when we finish
We are learning to listen to questions and
answer them
Prep Learning Intentions
English We have all identified our individual writing goals such as remembering to use a capital letter at the start of the sentence, write all the sounds we hear in words and use finger spaces between our words. We are starting to use our writing goals to help us with our learning by checking them at the start and end of our writing. We are learning to ‘chop up’ words to assist with our reading e.g. finding ‘ing’ and ‘ed’ at the end of words. Maths We are continuing to learn how to solve number stories. We are also investigating the number 10 and all the different ways we can make 10. Art: We are sharing our artwork with our peers and experiencing being an audience where we respond to others’ art making. My education: We are continuing to learn about what it means to be different and ways that we accept and include others in different situations. Science In our Science unit, Weather in my World, we are learning about the air, Sun and wind. We are learning how the characteristics of weather affect our daily lives.
Grade 1/2 Learning Intentions
English:
We are learning to use the inferring
reading strategy to understand text, putting together what we know and clues from the pictures and words.
Maths:
We are creating arrays to develop our understanding of multiplication.
We are exploring the properties of 3D shapes
Science:
We visited a waterfall and used our senses to observe how water moves.
Grade 3/4 Learning Intentions
In Literacy we are learning about perspective and how to write in 1st person. We used our class novel to explore this particular style of story-telling and engaged our senses to help activate our prior knowledge with regard to what we already know about our chosen animal. In Numeracy we are continuing our work around multiplication and division and the relationship between them. We have created hop scotch grids to practise our skip counting, multiplication and division facts. We have been using a 5x5 grid system to challenge ourselves with mental computation and speed when solving problems with the 4 operations (+, - , x and / ) In STEAM we have continued creating a Rube Goldberg machine, using simple machines to achieve a simple task in an overly complex manner. This ongoing project uses the design thinking model to challenge student thinking around creating, failing , modifying and testing…and it’s lots of fun too. In HASS (Humanities and social sciences) we are trialling a ‘flipped classroom’ teaching strategy where students view a number of short videos in their own time so they can complete related activities and follow up learning tasks during class time. We are using the history of two world navigators, Flinders and Baudin to learn this approach.
Grade 5/6 Learning Intentions
Maths year 6: To write correct number
sentences using brackets and order of
operations and chance and probability.
Maths year 5: Strategies to find unknown
quantities in number sentences and chance
and probability.
Spelling: Applying knowledge of spelling
generalisations to spell new words. The
suffixes 'tion', 'sion' and 'cian'.
English: Writing a narrative of the Day in the
Life of a child in their chosen country.
HASS: Year 6: Working on projects about
Asian countries and comparisons to Australia.
HASS: Year 5: Working on projects about
North American or European countries.
Science: Visiting the lab at St
Mary's experimenting with changes to
materials.
Learning intentions for Indonesian
In kinder we will be continuing with the ELLA program which is currently focusing on fruits and body parts.
In Prep we are learning how to greet others at different times of the day using appropriate forms of address.
In 1/2 and 3/4 we are learning how to respond to classroom instructions and developing vocabulary around classroom object nouns.
In 5/6 we are creating and participating in a wayang kulit performance.
Duduklah/ Sit down please. Silahkan masuk/Feel free to enter or come in.
Learning intentions for Music
In Grade 5/6 music we are learning to:
Listen to and distinguish music in 3/4 time
Identify structure in pieces (instrument order - texture)
In Grade 3/4 music we are learning to:
Listen to and distinguish music in 3/4 time
Begin to understand musical families
In Grade 1/2 and Prep we are learning to:
Listen to and share thoughts/ideas about music heard
Learn to a respectful audience member
From the Principal It has been a busy term to date and I want to thank the school
community for making me feel very welcome at Bicheno Primary
School. We have a great school and I am most impressed with our
students’ passion for learning and that we do have a Friendly
Respectful Learning environment. I was particularly proud of our Year
5/6 students’ interest and excellent behaviour up at the Science
laboratory at St Mary’s District School. Special thanks to St Mary’s staff
for welcoming us into their school. Thank you also to the staff and
students of St Marys who visited us with their musical expertise and
enthusiasm. Some great collaborative learning.
As mentioned in our last newsletter we were very fortunate to have an
External Review of our school competed last week by two highly
experienced educators. On behalf of our school community I have
thanked them for their professionalism and feedback. I would like to
share some of the areas identified by the External Review team where
the school is doing well:
“Many stakeholders noted that the small size of the school
contributed strongly to strong positive interpersonal relationships
both within and external to the school. These mutually respectful
relationships were internally reflected in the strong school values.
Students noted that their school was a safe place that they held in
high regard with many excellent features in the grounds and within
classrooms.
The panel noted the productive curriculum links between the Little
Penguins child care centre and the Kindergarten.
Leadership was described by many stakeholders as open, skilful,
supportive, responsive and optimistic. Several stakeholders noted
that they perceived that the school was communicating well with the
community and was moving in a positive future direction.
Extracurricular activities including the music program, STEM at St.
Marys and the art studio project were noted positively by all
stakeholders.
The culture at Bicheno was described by parents as resilient, positive
and nurturing.”
The External Review report also identifies possible areas for future
consideration which will be very useful as we build our 2018
Operational Plan. The report will be available for school community
members once it has been signed off by Learning Services North.
Due to a full newsletter this week, I will attach the full 2017 NAPLAN
Summary Report for Grades 3 and 5 at Bicheno Primary School in next
week’s newsletter.
Finally, just a reminder that if any parents have concerns we definitely
have an open door policy and welcome you to make an appointment
with either classroom teachers or myself as we all are responsible for
modelling our strong school values of ‘Friendly Respectful Learning’ to
our children.
Have a great day!

'All the water we have is all the water we've ever had. The rain that falls has already visited the ground and been used before. Our water is continually being recycled.'
The 3/4 class has been reading a story called “The camel who crossed Australia” by Jackie French. It is written from the camel's perspective. We decided to do our own story in 1st person. We had to choose an animal and write a story about that animal as if we were really them. (Grace Briggs)
Sea otter I gently float through the murky water. The brown depths seem to sink below me. Down, down, down… there’s a fish! I reach out,
claw my paws around it and… got it! The water ripples in the most particular way. Then when I see Glider and the gang coming
towards me, I do a summersault in happiness. Finally, finally there’re here!
Maybe I should start from the beginning. When I was born and
still very young, my mother abandoned me. But before she left, she gave me a name. It’s Slick. My mother was so special to me. Partly because she was my mother and partly because she could
talk. But the she left me. So I started taking care of myself.
About one year after I was abandoned, another little sea otter came up to me and brushed his furry, warm body against my side.
Then his mother came to collect him. I think she must have known because she also collected me. I went to live with them and
have ever since.
When I got to four years of age, Mama, [that’s what I call her], encouraged Glider and I out of the burrow to play a game. When
we finished and tried to go back in she pushed us out again. I thought that she didn’t want us anymore but Glider seemed to
understand and took off. I was about to do the same but I heard a voice behind me.
I whirled around. It was Mama! “Slick, I was just wondering if you could, well, talk. If you can, could you do it now? No, Ok just wondering.” She turned to go but I stopped her. “Wait!” I said “I
can talk”. “Ok come with me then”. She said
Slick came back three years later. He was seven. “Glider!?” “Where are you?” “There you are”! Glider appeared with a group. “Hey guys”! I cried before I remembered me voice. My
secret is out.

Dolphin I gently swim through the water, as I blow bubbles. All my friends gather round and we chatter “bubble bubble” I swim up to the surface and show off my skills to the others. I dive back down and see a big fish I aim for him and I only just got it, I swallowed it down in one big gulp mmm… that taste great! I can feel the water shimmering along my body, as I swim as fast as I could. I can smell sea water freshness’s of the afternoon air as I come up for a breath.
The sun has finally travelled across the sky. It’s time to head home, but when I get home it’s not like it should be. There’s a big shark and everybody knows sharks eat dolphins. Everybody knows the deal and what to do so we swim as fast as we could and we find are hiding places. We are now all safe. It’s time for dinner which is fresh fish I is so good!
Okay I think it’s about time I introduce myself I got born in captivity but a group of dolphins got re-leased including me I felt a lot better I could feel the ocean calling for me, and I couldn’t what to get out there. But first I had to stay with Mum and Dad it was finally time to get out there I was sad to say good bye It was really sad but as time went by I got used to it that’s a little bit about my life. I am now 8 years old and when I get older as the years go by I will remember my life experiences.

CLIFF THE CLOWN FISH
Hi my name is Cliff and I live in a big anemone with my friends. I’ve always wanted to go
to the big drop off. My mum and dad live in a big, big anemone next door to me and my
friends. Their anemone is way bigger than my friends and I. Mum and dad always said
how beautiful the big drop off was.
I just needed to wait until the worker clown fish finished the fence, so that baby clown fish don’t fall down the drop off. Of course older clown
fish can just swim over the fence but that would still be very dangerous, because once a year a small whirl pool will start in the middle of the
drop off.
HOOARRRRHH
The wise clown fish blew into the legendary sea horn, it had only happened once before and that time went down in history. I
started to swim to the wise clown fishes anemone. When I arrived there I swam through the crowds to find my family. It took
ages but I finally found them.
The wise clown fish announced “I’m afraid there was a bid whirl pool that has destroyed the big drop off. OH NO, what can we
do now? Cried the crowd.
Everyone swam off and went back to their homes. I went to my anemone and then decided to go for a swim. I found a part of
the reef I’d never been to before and saw a deep hole. It was lined with coral on the sides. I swam down and found a friendly
eagle ray. I think I had discovered a new drop off…maybe this one was just as beautiful.
