DOE Roadmap, Version 2010
US Department of Energy 2010 Multi-Year Plan for SSL
• LEDs consist of several layers of semiconductor material
• Light is generated in the PN junction when a voltage is applied
• LED light is monochromatic; the color depends on the materials used
• There are two material systems (AlInGaP and InGaN) used to produce LEDs in all colors from blue to red
• No moving parts, nothing to break
• Primary degradation mode is discoloration of lens or encapsulant
LED: Theory of Operation

Conversion to White Light
The LED chip is then mounted in a package and a yellow phosphor is applied to the top surface of the chip. The blue light generated by the LED chip is converted by the yellow phosphor to white light. The package is topped with a lens help direct and shape the light for the intended application.
Blue (or UV) + Phosphor = White

• The human eye is extraordinarily sensitive, so small process variations in chip wavelength; phosphor thickness, concentration, composition; and/or deposition conditions make a big perceived difference in white light CCT & quality

• Chromaticity binning
– Some defined “box” in the white area on or near the Black Body Locus
– Bin sizes (x, y coordinates) varies by supplier
• Brightness or LF binning
– Minimum luminous flux (most suppliers)
– Bin sizes/flux range varies by supplier

ETENDUE, LIGHT CONSERVATION
Light as with all forms of energy must be conserved in a system. This principle is called Etendue. The simple approximated form of Etendue is:
Etendue = area * solid angle
XLamp XP Standard White
• Industry’s highest performance lighting-class LEDs
– XP-G: Up to 148 lm @ 141 LPW; up to 493 lm @ 92 LPW
– XP-E: Up to 130 lm @ 116 LPW; up to 291 lm @ 84 LPW
• Design flexibility with one footprint
– Reduce system cost by using fewer LEDs & fewer optics
– Easily create different price / performance levels
• Superior optical control – put light where it is needed
– Small optical source size works well with reflector & TIR solutions

Reference: Distributed Phosphor in MX6
• While the illuminating area of the MX6 is several times larger than the XP E, for example, there is also a large gradient within the area
• Therefore the beam angle will be much larger, but will not be proportional to the entire emitting area
• As with the previous case, care must be taken to blend the intensity from the different chips together in the beam

Cree’s Test Configuration Per IES LM-80-2008
Temperature of solder pad of lamps is independently actively controlled by fluid flowing through heat sink.
Temperature of ambient around lamps is actively controlled by air flowing through chamber
Lamps are mounted to MCPCB’s.
• During test, the temperature of the solder pad of the lamps and the air around the lamps is the same
• Per LM-80,
− For 55ºC testing, the TSP of the lamps and air are both at 55ºC
− For 85ºC testing, the TSP of the lamps and air are both at 85ºC
(LED) Ambient Temperature, Defined (XR, MC) • “Ambient temperature” here is the temperature of the air
surrounding the LED lens and reflector
• It is not the temperature outside of the fixture, luminaire or housing
• Photons will affect thermocouple readings, so measurements should be taken outside of the light emission region
• This can be measured at a distance beyond the LED thermal boundary layer, typically a 12mm dia hemisphere around the LED, with no obstructions.
• If there are obstructions inside this area, a maximum, unobstructed distance should be used.

Measuring Solderpoint
Thermocouple Attach to Solderpoint Process: • Ensure thermocouple tip is in good mechanical contact with exposed metal at the junction
of the component and PCB
• Attach thermocouple using either highly conductive epoxy (ex: Arctic Silver Adhesive) or solder directly to exposed metal
• Tip: Use tape to hold thermocouple in place and relieve stress on thermocouple
• Tip: Bend thermocouple to press against solderpoint/component
Copyright © 2010, Cree, Inc. pg. 51
Solderpoint Thermal Epoxy Tape
Copyright © 2008, Cree, Inc. pg. 52
2) Measure Solder Point Temperature
• Almost impossible to measure the solder point directly
• Temperature probe measurement from PCB directly below the LED or next to the LED is usually good enough
Copyright © 2008, Cree, Inc. pg. 53
3) Measure Voltage & Current
• Measure voltage across & current through LED
There is nothing like a good start
• Simulation is sometimes the best way to get a design started
• Then build-and-test to verify and improve
• Building and testing takes time, where a simulation can be run in hours
• In streetlighting, it is impractical to do iterations in hardware
Streetlighting References
LEDs must come
• In Germany, ca. 8% - 10% of all energy demand is due to street lighting.
• The proportion of Mercury based lamps in germany is over 33% of the total 10 Million Streetlamps.
• The EU is reacting, Mercury lamps lose EU-certification in 2015 and must be replaced.

Why to use optics?
Proper optics are often just as important part of a good quality product, than other key components like the LEDs and drivers. Using suitable high quality optics, you achieve better beam control:
• More efficient lighting. Less LEDs, energy and money needed. • Reduction of glare caused by ”point source” and wide angle • Possibilities to make more uniform light with different ambience
and cutoffs. • Needed for illumination standards in many applications such as
Street lights, aviation lights and medical lights. • Freedom for design. (side emitting lenses, asymmetrical lenses, compact
size) • Finished look and LED protection
October 2010 © Ledil Oy
What to know about LED optics? • LEDs come in various different packages and work
differently in near-field, resulting different light output with the same optic.
• With LEDIL source optimized opitcs you can achieve the best results in: Efficiency, light control, uniformity, compact size and easy and accurate instalation.
• The bigger the optic compared to the source, the more accuracy and control can be achieved.
• The optimal form factor of the optic is determined by the LED source and lens output requirement.
• In some cases lenses are better performing, more cost efficient and suitable than reflectors and vice versa.
October 2010 © Ledil Oy
Lens vs. Reflector Control with surfaces
Typical Lens
Efficiency: 94% Peak: 70x Interfaces: 0-1
Efficiency: 92% Peak: 100x Interfaces: 2-3
+ More possibilities to control light + Cheap and compact for small sources + Sealable solutions possible with only one piece
Typical Reflector
+ Cheaper and lighter for big LED arrays + Good efficiency with different sources, even if poor optical design

Polycarbonate Used in lens holders, reflectors and some lenses
Quality of materials used by ledil
Light transmittance: Good 88% UV resistance: Fair, but not recommended for long term outdoor use as optical component Temperature resistance: Good Operation temperature limits -40°C - 130°C Our polycarbonate reflectors with protective lacquer are recommended to be exposed under 105°C If high pressure or impact is applied to a lens, the recommended temperature range is less.
Adhesive tape Automotive grade polyurethane (PU) double side adhesive tape. 0.4mm thick Service temperature: -40°C - 120°C The expected lifetime of the adhesive tape is over 20 years. Suitable for outdoor and indoor use. Good weather and UV resistance. Not recommended to be used as main adhesive in applications exposed to heavy vibration. Customer is kindly required to test the tape in their application.

What is required from a good streetlight optic.
• High total efficiency and good ”usable efficiency”, meaning that the light is directed where it is really needed.
• Good illuminance and luminance uniformity. Depending on the road type and requirement, uniformity is measured from illuminance (lux, fc) or/and luminance (cd/m2). Illuminance is the measurement on the surface from the luminaire, whereas luminance is measuring how the human driver sees the road behind the wheel.
• Glare is caused by the direct light from very wide angles. (75degrees and higher) Too much glare will reduce visibility and discomfort.
• Some surround light is required, it also adds flexibility for streetlight setups.
• Light has to fulfill different requirements in the most common street light configuration setups. The requirements are similar allover the world, but the differences have some impact on the most common street lighting setups.

What is required from a good streetlight optic.
• In the US market, IESNA type classifications are used to categorize light beams to help the lighting planners to choose luminaires for installations.
• The classifications do not tell how efficiently and uniformly the luminaire illuminates the road in any case, so even very poor quality streetlights that do not fulfill any requirements easily can be categorized as IESNA type light distribution. However, making the lamp to fall into the desired IESNA type category should be beneficial in the US market.

Street lighting with
Ledil optics
• Ledil has developed a great understanding about Street lighting optical needs together with customers. • Ledil has a number of STRADA street lighting standard lenses and some customer exclusive designs. • Strada lenses are optimized for many different LED packages. • Symmetrical and asymmetrical • Ledil has also designed a patent pending reflector system for some of the new high power LED arrays. • Ledil will release a streetlight array lens in early 2011. These simple modules are planned to be used without additional protective glass.
October 2010 © Ledil Oy
Best Performing Streetlight Optics Today • Strada-T has designed for the demand of fulfilling the toughest Street light requirements all over the world. • Excellent luminance and illuminance uniformity. • Well controlled beam, very little stray light. • Typically 70% - 80% of the light is on the street side, only 20% - 30% for optimal surround light. Total efficiency well over 90%. • Very little glare. Fixture shade is not always needed. • Beam designed for most typical street installations with added flexibility. Good results when road width is approximately the pole height.
• Protective cover losses from 5% (spherical PMMA) to ~18% (flat PC without anti-reflective coating)
