• Analyze a variety of texts to create an opinion about the use of Native American Mascots in schools/sports teams, including evidence from The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

• Explore the concept of the individual vs. the community by looking at Junior’s struggle in the text.

• Prepare for a Socratic Seminar discussion on social issue through persuasive/argument writing.

• Participate in a real-world discussion on a social issue.

INSTRUCTIONS

• Gather your materials (packet of articles/cartoons etc., research, book)

• Decide what your position will be. What is your claim (opinion)about the topic?

• Identify evidence from the articles read in class, the novel, and your own research to support your position.

• Write your argument (see rubric and handout) – cite textual evidence!
