Dear Members:
The spring equinox has past and the club’s focus is now on getting our facilities prepped and ready for our 73rd Annual Commissioning Day on the 7th of May.
As most of you must now know, Billy Friedman our long serving Dockmaster tendered his resignation this past month and we wish him the best in his new endeavor. Fortunately, Captain Eric Smith who was our Head Launch Driver has agreed to become Dockmaster. Eric and his team are now busy commissioning our launches, placing the club moorings and docks, as well as the many other items necessary to make our club ready for summer.
Speaking of Commissioning Day, please see the flyer included in this issue.
I wish to thank the Skeet Committee for an outstanding year. This spring we will have a cocktail party in our upstairs Salon to re-introduce Skeet’s annual awards ceremony. A date will be set shortly.
Presently, Elizabeth and I are tied up at the Bitter End Yacht Club in the company of Cruise Captain Robert Reyes and Trustee Jeanne Lafiteau. We are shoving off today for Norman Island and after that St. John. Dancing Bear III, will end this leg of the journey in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Fair winds,
Constantine Baris, Commodore

REAR COMMODORE’S
REPORT:Tony Miraglia
Dear Sagamore Members,
March was another busy Month at SYC. Big thanks goes out to Terry Swanson, Greg Santi and Steve Goldstein for making Bingo night so much fun. We will probably have another Bingo night this fall.
Irish Step dancing was enjoyable and it gave us a chance to introduce Irish coffee as a new drink at the club. Tim will gladly make you one anytime! Thank you Deanna and Kerriann for putting this event together. Kudos to Ernie Canedeo and Lou Pannullo for putting on another amazing Broadway on the Sound production! Close to 90 people enjoyed this event.
By now you should have received your SYC survey in an email, thank you for taking the time to respond to the questions. We value your input as this will help guide the Board to continue to provide value to all members.
Steve Fredrick will be entertaining us during dinner on Saturday April 8th.
Finally, the Food committee and Chef Rosario are working on the new Spring/Summer menu. It will include favorites plus a number of new items. Hopefully that will be in place by mid-April. As always, we ask that you please continue to make reservations online when you plan on dining at the club. It helps us manage food purchases and staffing for the evening."
Warm Regards,
Tony Miraglia Rear Commodore
Vice Commodore’s Report:Michael Mafucci
Dear fellow members,
I am pleased to see the expansion of volunteerism at the club. Groups of people are pitching in across all committees. The team work demonstrated is invaluable to our success. This is how we got where we are.
Good communication between a board and its members is vital. The Board needs to know what is being done right and what needs
improvement. Members need to know what direction the club is going in and how we are going to get there. The best time for both parties to accomplish this objective is at a general membership meeting. Our next meeting is Friday, April 21. Our tentative plans are to serve appetizers and have a cash bar. Details will be forwarded via email. We are planning an open dialogue forum which will be different than past meetings. Be sure to mark your calendar and bring your questions, ideas and concerns.
Now, it is time for boating! The shrink wrap is off the Mezzanotte and I am anxiously waiting for her launch. As many of you know the Mezzanotte is a power boat. I am planning on having her out on Wednesday evenings to join in the fun of "sail night" in our harbor. I invite all power boaters and friends to join in. The club is usually a bit out of control with 100 people at times crowding the bar and demanding service from our strained kitchen. Come early for dinner before the sailors get in from racing if you want to relax. Otherwise just come down for the fun.
Keep in mind, the parking lot will be filled with boats until the end of May so be prepared to park next door.
APRIL, 2017! !

Again thank you all for your continued suppot!
See you at the club.Best regards,
Michael A. MaffucciVice Commodore
Secretary’s Report:Alan Schaub
Dear Sagamore Members,
On Sunday, March 19th, Sagamore held the first of our Spring Open Houses. Although the weather wasn’t the best, six prospective members came out to enjoy our hospitality and learn about our club. The Membership Committee is following up with those who expressed an interest in joining. I would like to thank all of the members who came down to mingle and share their SYC stories and experiences with our guests.
The next Open House, on April 2nd, should be a bit more comfortable weather-wise and give prospective members a chance to walk around outside to enjoy the view and explore the facility. Please join us at the Open House and bring along
your friends and relatives to see what we have to offer.
The first General Membership Meeting of 2017 will be held on Friday, April 21st at 8:00p.m. A notice will be sent out to the membership prior to the meeting with information about what will be covered.
This year’s Commissioning Ceremony is on Sunday, May 7, at 3:30 p.m. The 2017 Membership Roster Books and Member Packets will be available at that time, so mark your calendar and save the date.
Fair Winds,
Alan Schaub [email protected]
Treasurer’s Report:Kate Zucconi
Dear Sagamore Members:
By now all members should have their 2017 membership dues paid in full. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Please continue to keep your bar and food invoices up to date, this will ensure financial health and reduce expenses.
I am happy to announce that a revamped Chandlery is up and running. Please see the following note from Chandlery chair, Kathy Maffucci:
“As you think about shedding those Winter clothes, look at Sagamore’ s New Chandlery to refresh your Spring wardrobe! Items are in the display case in the entrance of the club. Details can be found in the Chandlery catalog book along with order forms. Please see Tim at the bar to place an order or contact one of the committee members: KathyMaffucci: [email protected]; Maryellen Miraglia: mmiraglia [email protected]; Marilyn Pagano: marpag3@ hotmail.com; Tricia Gillen:[email protected]."
Many thanks to Kathy, Maryellen, Marilyn and Tricia for this transformation which gives us new merchandise options and makes it easier to purchase. This is a great way to support your club and expand our brand.

SKEET REPORT
I’m sure I speak treason, but some part of me wishes skeet was just beginning not ending. That would mean it’s December. But I can feel the weather change, so I guess it’s April. No worry, December will find us again.
Skeet has enjoyed one of its finest seasons. Good times with good people. We also had first-time shooters who I know are looking forward to coming back.
Thanks go out to many people: the Sagamore board; Tim, our most excellent bartender; Chef Rosario, who came out with lunch specials and a few surprises, dumplings among the favorites; and, Billy Friedman who unloaded our supplies.
Special thanks to our Skeet committee, Chair Brad Kelher, Rich Meyer, Enzo Zucconi, Andy Schlock, and Jeff Taylor. Thanks also to Gary VanDis and Bob Austin who worked behind the scenes, setting up, breaking down, and keeping our bay clean of shotgun caps.
Our unofficial top shot is Bob Austin. Sagamore shooters won two of four club shoots, with one more scheduled for April. Most important was the good fun, and the guests who passed through our doors and saw what Sagamore is all about.
See you next season.

Junior Sailing for 2017
Sagamore Junior Sailing is pleased to announce the Junior Sailing program for the 2017 season. The program will once again be operated out of our club on the protected and beautiful waters of Oyster Bay, utilizing our ever-expanding fleet of Optis, Blue Jays and 420’s. The program, designed for 8 to 16 year olds, adheres to the guidelines set by the Long Island Sound Junior Sailing Association and will be operated and overseen by experienced and certified instructors. Sagamore Junior Sailing offers two, four and eight week sessions, five days a week, from 9:30 AM until 4:30 PM. Our first session will commence on June 26th and we will operate continuously through August 18th.
We are incredibly excited about the Sagamore Junior Sailing program. As the days get longer and the average daily temperature is on the rise, you will find the team preparing the sailing equipment for the quickly approaching Summer Season. With new racing sails for 50% of our Optis, the 420s still in great shape, adding another Blue Jay to our fleet and bringing the 12 kayaks back to the club, we are making sure we will be ready for the 2017 season long before the children arrive. Our inventory of instructor’s equipment has grown with the addition of a 19ft RIB as a faster chase boat. While the sail boats and equipment are in good shape, we can always use volunteers who are mechanically inclined as many hands make light work of any chore.
This year we have four very well qualified instructors. All of our instructors have raced, and interestingly enough, raced with each other as skipper/crew in various events. We are thinking of running an Oyster Bay Instructor challenge, and bet that our instructor team stands a great chance of beating a team of instructors from any other program in Oyster Bay, including Oakcliff!
Our top priority presently is for housing for one more very experienced instructor. She is a college senior from Minneapolis and we really want to hire her, but need space for her to live. Several of our instructors have cars, so we are not so concerned that she be housed within walking distance.
Focusing back on our students, our emphasis is still on having an educational, fun and safe summer. We are looking at more outside regattas this year, and are in the process of putting together a “travel team” trailer so we can get a whaler and either 420’s or Opti’s to events in Connecticut and Eastern Long Island safely and professionally. Next month we will share intended out of area regattas and dates, but for now if you want to see when the popular junior events are, you can go to http://jsalis.org/regattas for a current listing.

Now for the parents. In order for our program to continue to be successful and well attended, we look to our members to spread the word to friends, family and neighbors for our future sailors. In order to help make this happen, we are offering all of our members a $50 referral credit for every child that they introduce and register with our program. In addition, we are now offering a 10% discount to all member registrants for a four week program and a 15% discount to all members for our eight week program. Word of mouth has certainly been our best advertising over the last several years and we are looking for more happy sailors to fill our fleet this year.
There is nothing better than seeing our children sailing on the bay and developing their skills and friendships out on the water. The Junior Sailing Committee is looking forward to welcoming your children to our program this year. For more information, please check our tab on the SYC website, http://www.sagamoreyc.com/junior-sailing/, email: [email protected], or feel free to contact Bill Peterson @ 917-544-8792.
And … we still have more to say!
This month we want to share the bio of our new head instructor.
Alison Knoles, Head Instructor
Alison began sailing at the age of seven and has six years of coaching experience. She grew up sailing Optimists and Lasers at Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, Michigan. Alison has competed in numerous National and International Championship Regattas; including Miami World Cup in the Laser Radial and 470, Collegiate Dinghy Nationals, Thistle Nationals, and Snipe Women’s Worlds. As a college freshman she won Navy Women’s in the Laser Radial and was awarded University of South Florida Division I Women’s Varsity Sailing Best Newcomer of the Year. For the past 3 years she has been a guest coach with the Wounded Warrior Sailing Program held in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Alison has taught and coached at many yacht clubs, including Port Washington YC, St. Petersburg Sailing Center and Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, Michigan. Her references included Dawn Riley from Oakcliff.
Alison has successfully completed the challenging US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Level II training, demonstrating that she is one of the best qualified instructors on Long Island Sound. Alison is very enthusiastic to help develop and be a part of the Sagamore Junior Sailing Program.
As part of her interview process, Alison was asked why, when she was qualified enough to make a run for the 2020 Olympics,
she would be willing to teach at Sagamore. “I love what the sport of sailing has given me. I get tremendous satisfaction out of introducing younger students to sailing – infusing them with some
! APRIL, 2017
11
of the love of the sport that I have. Sagamore is the kind of program where I can foster a fun and safe learning environment to create lifetime sailors.”
By the way, to give you some idea of how well qualified our instructors are:
• One has completed US Sailing Level 2 training• All have completed US Sailing Level 1 training• All have completed Safe Boating powerboat courses• All are CPR/AED certified• Two are certified Life Guards• All have taught in at least one other program before• All have raced 420’s and 470’s, as well as many other boats• All have had at least some contact with Oakcliff, either as a friend, an acorn, or as part of
their 470 team.• Three have had experience with The Waterfront Center• Two are looking toward a 2020 Olympic bid• All have raced together as skipper/crew with at least one other of our sailing instructors• All have specifically looked to Sagamore as a chance to pass the love of sailing onto
younger sailors. Can you imagine how awesome it would be if we could get them out on Wednesday nights a few times? Did you say you were interested in a private racing coach? We will provide bios of the other instructors in next month’s Scuttlebutt.
Even though it is still a little cold out, Sagamore Junior Sailing has activities on the calendar. On April 7 at 4:30, Oakcliff has invited our junior sailors to a special event to hear a presentation by Gino Morelli, who has designed and raced a number of high-speed “foil” boats (like in the America’s Cup boats.) This year there will be a fleet of them at Oakcliff and we highly recommend that our young sailors take this opportunity to see what this new and fascinating development in sailing is all about. Todd Field has agreed to be there to chaperone and escort our junior sailors from Oakcliff back to Sagamore, and provide some snack (possibly pizza?) afterwards, to make pickup by parents very safe and easy. Todd suggests that current or past junior sailors 12 and over attend. They need not be current members of the sailing program or even of SYC. For details or reservations, please contact Todd at [email protected] or call him at 631 425-1422.

LET’S PUT THE YACHT INTO THE YACHT CLUB
AN INVITATION TO ALL SAILORS AND CREW
The sailing season in Oyster Bay is about to begin. All Sagamore members are invited to participate. Crew positions are almost always available and arrangements between skippers and crew should be made several days before each race. Skippers new to racing are welcome to join an experienced skipper for a few weeks in order to learn the ropes, jargon, rules, radio procedures, courses, etc. There is an excellent video of the action during the 2015 season at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B61GKAfifyoISWRfbTNnUUFwWjg/view.
Our sailing program consists of a vibrant Wednesday evening series of 20 races starting in early May and continuing thru September 20. There are also several weekend races including Execution Run, the Alzheimer's Regatta, Race to Dinner, the Commodore’s Cup and possibly a few others. In addition, our Fleet Captain, Robert Reyes, has planned several cruises including a cruise to the city in June, a long cruise “out east” in July and a few others as well. Power Boaters are welcome to join any of the cruises, however, they don’t need to leave quite as early as the sailors.
For the racers, the annual orientation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 26 at 1930 Hrs (7:30 PM for landlubbers). At this meeting we will explain our schedule, go over some of the rules, talk about our vastly improved scoring system and answer any questions anyone may have.
Wednesday night sailing begins the following week on May 3 with the practice race. The next ten Wednesdays comprise the Spring Series which is immediately followed by the Summer Series for the following ten Wednesdays. The first gun is always at 1830 hrs (6:30) and the start is usually at buoys 1/1a which are just East of Red Nun 6 off of Billy Joel’s house, aka Moses Point. Should the wind gods be uncooperative, the start may be delayed 15 minutes and moved to Area Bravo which is north of the Dolan compound on Cove Neck or to a temporary mark near Seawanhaka.
Wednesday night courses are usually between 2 and 6 miles long and are all within Oyster Bay. Weekend courses are longer and generally go out to the sound and one includes an Execution, pirates, cannons, costumes and a long sail West. On Wednesdays, everyone is generally back at the club by about 2030 (8:30) and most stay for Rosario’s dinner and maybe a drink from Tim.
Wednesdays are supposed to be casual and informal however competition is unavoidable. The fleet, which consists of as many as 25 boats, is divided among three divisions. The Spinnaker division is known as Blue and the non spinnaker division is divided between Yellow (faster) and Green (slower).
! APRIL, 2017
13
In the Blue division everyone chases the elusive Black Pearl skippered by Past Commodore Capt. Mike Gehrling. In the Yellow Division, there was a rumor that Jack Bernstein’s Luff Story would not race this year since she was badly beaten by Bill Mullen’s Arrows last year. That rumor is untrue and Luff Story will race this summer however there is another rumor that Arrows will be moving to the Spinnaker division to either get away from Luff Story or to chase Black Pearl.
There is even competition in the more relaxed Green Division, aka the “Wine and Cheese” boats. Club Secretary Alan Schaub’s Concerto in Sea won a couple of races last year, thanks largely to the aggressive tactics of his crew, namely club Treasurer Kate Zucconi. This is probably the most appropriate division for new sailors and skippers who have not done much racing.
Race results are normally available in less than an hour thanks to our inimitable race committee and Principal Race Officer (PRO) Todd Field. He and his crew compile the data, enter it into a laptop and have results for the skippers to argue about. Todd’s commentary is often the best reading of the week. All are invited to join the Yahoo Group: Sagamore Racing to read results, post “crew available” or “crew needed”, get updates and enjoy Todd’s rather amusing reviews of the races.
All members and families are invited to join the fun. All sailors are encouraged to read this article from Sail Magazine about racing a cruising boat. It’s loaded with valuable information: http://www.sailmagazine.com/racing/how-to-race-your-cruiser/.
For more information about Sagamore’s sailing season please do not hesitate to call me at 917 602 4810 or e mail at [email protected] or Sailing chair Andy Scoltok at [email protected] or Past Commodore Darren Martin at e mail: dmartin@advantagefunding or cell at 646 210 3361.
