5/12 barcelona student board newsletter may 2012
DESCRIPTION
Report from the CEMS Student Board, following their recent meeting hosted by ESADE Business School.TRANSCRIPT
Exciting times last week in Barcelona... Indeed, next to the impressive amount of high-level football games
going on and a truly poetic local holiday that is Sant Jordi the Student Board gathered in the Catalan city for its
first meeting of 2012. With this newsletter, the Student Board wants to share the latest news, while focusing
on the main projects we are working on and the major events that will happen throughout the CEMS alliance
in the coming months.
The Student Board was kindly hosted in Barcelona by ESADE Business School and we enjoyed very much the
discussions we had with the members of this outstanding academic institution. We got the chance to
elaborate on the topic of “Business Schools and their contribution to society” together with the author of the
book presented in Lisbon at the CEMS Annual Events, Alfons Sauquet, Dean of ESADE.
Among the main topics covered in this newsletter you will find many new projects that were started during
the meeting in Barcelona. We are very excited to see these grow in the coming months and have high hopes of
getting them ready before December when the CEMS Annual Events will take place in St Gallen.
Enjoy the newsletter and look out for opportunities to keep your CEMS experience up this summer. Looking
for suggestions? Why not connect with fellow CEMSies doing their internship in the same company or city as
you? Or take a trip with the Alumni Association to a nice and sunny destination? Let’s make the most out of
the CEMS network!

CEMS – THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE IN MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
A word from the Executive Team
MIM Affairs is pleased to announce that it welcomed two additional members during the Barcelona
meeting, Luciana Coelho (HSG) and Karol Górnowicz (SGH). The meeting was an opportunity for the
team members to discuss and prioritise new projects raised by students and in line with the current
developments at the head office level.
The core mission of MIM team remains to improve the CEMS MIM programme quality and learning
experience. It provides a link between students and other stakeholders. In this regard, the team has
been gathering feedback from all student board representatives and produced a report that was
submitted to the Head Office. Recommendations covered a wide range of topics and aim at pointing
out the crucial issues that students are facing in their respective schools.
Using the same methodology and following its quality mission, the team is currently working on a new
report regarding issues related to business projects. At least one student per school is or will be soon
surveyed about his or her business project experience. The report is expected to be made available to
the Head Office in the coming weeks.
Finally, the team is also contributing to the task force “learning objectives and implications for the
curriculum”. A workshop was held during the Barcelona meeting with the following theme: “innovation
in the MIM programme.” Several student board representatives contributed to a bright discussion,
which translated into some fresh ideas for the programme. Those ideas will be taken into consideration
when reshaping the MIM programme to keep CEMS at the forefront of the education world.

Update from MIM Affairs
Our most important session during the meeting
was on the topic of a central CEMS CSR theme.
The whole Student Board reached the
unanimous decision to implement such a theme
and voted for “Education”. The team will be
working on a document to explain the purpose
of such a theme and will brief all the CEMS Clubs
and the wider CEMS community in the next
months.
We also had one session together with Kevin
Titman (CEMS Communication Manager) on
providing an update of the CSR information on
the cems.org website. The content production
from the student perspective will be one of the
priorities of the CSR team in the next months.
All in all, it was a great meeting for the CSR team
and, as always, it was a lot of fun. [email protected]

CEMS Social Responsibility Team
The Barcelona meeting was quite an important
one for the CSR team. It marks a complete
makeover of our team; it provided us with
some great conclusions; and it allowed us to
plant some seeds that, over the next year,
might grow into interesting CSR projects for
the CEMS community. First of all we celebrated
the completion of our main project for the last
months: the first edition of the CSR Booklet.
The booklets are travelling to your schools with
the Student Board reps at the moment. If you
want to catch a glimpse, track down your rep
in the coming days!
Miguel, Alexandra and Roser (making up the
entire “old” CSR team) will all be leaving the
Student Board in the near future. We are
fortunate however to have recruited three new
members already. Sarianne, Paula and Cristina
will do a great job in continuing with the
projects that have grown close to us over the
last months. Given that we had a complete
turnover of our team, we spent a lot of time on
teaching our newbies about our recurring
projects (like the preparation of the Global
Values Statement and the production of the
CSR booklet, which we decided to make an
annual edition) and also selected a new team
leader: Cristina.

Marketing & Communication
Dear CEMSies,
My name is Pavol Dzurjanin, the Student Board representative for Rotterdam School of Management and
the new team leader of our team. First of all, I am very pleased to welcome Anna Mátyus, the new
representative from Budapest, who has hit the ground running and immediately prepared this semester’s
CEMS merchandise for the online store even before her first Student Board meeting in Barcelona last week.
Talking about merchandise – your orders have been successfully processed and handed over to the
suppliers. You can pick them up from your local CEMS Club in the second half of May. Now let us give you a
little insight into our upcoming projects!
Since CEMS has been on the map for some time now and there are many accomplished alumni with
interesting profiles, we would like to bring to your attention some of the successful CEMS alumni out there.
You can therefore expect to have a look into a life of a CEMS student many years after graduation as well as
find out which aspect of CEMS remains most valuable throughout your future career.
The Student Alumni Mentorship Programme (SAMP) is also slowly getting off the ground. However, as the
regional CEMS communities vary largely in size and relative position to the school, don’t be shy to get into
contact with CEMS alumni working in your area of interest through social or professional networks. Our
team will be sending out a short how-to guide to make your networking experience as easy as possible.
Finally, we would like to remind you that you can always share your CEMS experiences or advertise for
CEMS events on the official Facebook and Google+ CEMS page by sending an e-mail to this address:
[email protected]. These can be invitations to an event hosted by your local CEMS Club,
social activities for students and alumni or a seminar that took place in your country. It is a great way to
promote both your school and your local CEMS community within the alliance.
We wish you a successful completion of the semester and good luck on your exams!

The Globalisation Team The Globalisation Team has been sinking its teeth into many projects this past term! Through a Corporate
Partner mapping and an analysis of student satisfaction between CEMS alliance schools in Europe and
outside Europe, the team has gained a strong understanding of the obstacles currently facing students at
newer CEMS schools. With this analysis in mind, the team hopes to share its results regarding courses,
Corporate Partners and information dissemination with administrators and CEMS clubs alike in order to
determine targeted solutions to the issues presented by students.
Additionally, the team worked with Procter& Gamble to better understand their interaction with CEMS
schools across the alliance. Through understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the collaboration
with various schools, the team hopes the analysis will help P&G to ensure that all CEMS students are
enjoying a consistent experience. Experiencing the same great programming throughout CEMS!
Looking to the future, the Globalisation Team will be working closely with Head Office to determine new,
exciting schools for the global expansion of the alliance. Furthermore, the team is also working to develop
targeted promotional activities for prospective students in the newer CEMS schools. In addition to
increasing CEMS’s e-presence online, the team is hoping students will help support “student ambassador”
initiatives while on terms abroad by helping to promote their own schools to prospective students while
abroad.
For any suggestions or any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the Globalisation
Team at [email protected]

CEMS Club Support Since the meeting in Lisbon in December the CEMS Club Support Team has mainly focused on the ongoing
support of the CEMS Clubs, updating their support packages and mapping the Regional Events, as well as
preparing the new communication platform Podio.
In Barcelona, the team had to say goodbye to two devoted members, Nadya Sheynina and Annie Nguyen, but
was pleased to welcome Damla Taskin, Chris Glaser and Dennis Surya. The new members quickly got up to
date on the current projects, and are already showing to be valuable assets for the team.
The team is still working on a new platform, Podio, in order to support CEMS Clubs around the globe more
efficiently. Podio is an online working platform that will improve the communication between CEMS Club
Presidents and CEMS Club Support Team. It will be used as a knowledge repository, a place to share best
practices, ask your question and get support on different issues.
We also started to discuss the CEMS Club Awards and the CEMS Club Conference (CCC) for 2012. This years’
CCC aims at gathering all the CEMS Club Presidents, to create team spirit, to improve collaboration and
communication as well as to share best practices. The CCC will be held in Budapest on 14 - 15 of November,
providing an interesting start to the Career Fair for the presidents. At the Annual Event in St. Gallen, the CEMS
Club Award will again be handed out to the best performing CEMS Club.
Lastly we are happy to announce that we will start working on a Best Practice Booklet, displaying events
organized at the different CEMS universities. The aim of this booklet is to let the different Clubs share
experiences and events they are proud of, and at the same time providing inspiration for the other Clubs.
While working on these projects, the CCS team members will of course continue to stay in touch with the
Clubs. You can find your coach here:

looking into all aspects of CEMS Club life in order to improve the CEMS experience for everyone. We greatly
appreciate any knowledge sharing, best practices or recommendations to make this task more efficient and
fulfilling. We thank you for your future contributions and look forward to working with you!
