PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

GROWING WITH THE COMMUNITY

We are here to support the academic, social and

emotional development of our students to be resilient

to the challenges of a rapidly changing society.

A LITTLE TIME TO REFLECT I hope you enjoyed some quality time together and some special activities with family and friends during the recent holiday period. As term four commences it’s timely to reflect on last term and feel very satisfied with the outcomes of a number of major school programs, such as the whole school swimming program and the Senior and Junior Athletics Programs. We thank all staff, parents and students who contributed to the success of our various sporting adventures, and we particularly thank Mr Champion for his hard work and organisation throughout last term. We are committed to offering broad curriculum choices to our students but at all times we remain focussed on academic pursuits. The inquiry-learning model again prompted much interesting and relevant learning and deeper understanding for our students throughout last term. The showcasing of their learning by our students continued to be an integral part of the learning process. The student portfolios were maintained and were successfully shared with parents. The student led conferences, a feature of parent teacher interviews in grade 3 to 6 this year, were generally well received. Our regular and varied assessments of student learning indicate we are meeting the needs of our students and extending them appropriately. We again thank the many parents who supported our inquiry units, excursions, incursions and PFA activities last term but just as importantly in coming along to watch your children present their learning in a variety of ways across many curriculum areas. We look forward to your ongoing support this term in various ways that present themselves.

2013 NAPLAN RESULTS The results of our grades 3 and 5 students on the national testing (NAPLAN) were distributed to students and their families this week. We believe that students will be able to look closely at their NAPLAN achievements with their parents with a degree of satisfaction and pride and knowledge that they have done their best. The diagrams below are the Year 3 and 5 ‘School Summary Reports’ for the areas tested. The dark red boxes represent the school’s performance while the light cream boxes represent the State results. The horizontal line represents the medium score (mid-score). I think you will agree that our 2013 aggregated results in both years 3 and 5 are ones to be proud of. YEAR 3

YEAR 5

Our goals and priorities at CPS are to support our students from prep to year 6 academically, socially and emotionally. As a staff we regularly discuss our passions to ensure we are instilling a love of learning across many curriculum areas in the students whom we support and care for each and every day. NAPLAN is just one assessment of each child’s learning and we are committed to developing the whole child through a wide curriculum that extends well beyond what NAPLAN assesses. Fine results, as those above, are achieved because we support students to participate in more formal assessments such as this. Literacy and Numeracy are key curriculum priorities for us each day within our classrooms. As discussed previously, considerable professional learning for teachers occurs in Literacy and Numeracy. Teachers work hard to use all our teaching spaces in innovative and flexible ways, adopting collaborative, engaging and targeted teaching methods to ensure all students have better opportunities to be challenged at their point of need. We also continually monitor and review our progress as a team of teachers to ensure we always strive to be better at what we do.

DANCE AROUND THE WORLD CONCERT There were many thanks given on the night but once again we need to congratulate our students for the wonderful entertainment they provided in our Dance Around the World concert. Ms Bolger was so proud and most satisfied that the investment in this aspect of The Arts came to fruition in such a way. Great as the night was, of course it was the journey for the children that was most beneficial, learning their dances over eight weeks of lessons and then practising and preparing to put on a show. Thank you parents for your amazing support. Thanks, teachers for your hard work and thanks Bron and Footsteps Dance Company for your professional tuition. We now have a great DVD for sale. All details of how to order and pay for this DVD can be found in the following pages. AUDITORY PROCESSING PARENT SEMINAR Just a reminder that we have an audiologist, Leslie Tan speaking to interested parents at a seminar in the school hall on Monday 21st October from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Please let us know if you intend to attend. ENROLMENTS FOR 2014 Plans for 2014 staffing are underway and budgets are being organised. To ensure the best possible outcomes for students and teachers, I am keen to organise plans for 2014 as soon as possible. To support this planning please ensure your child has returned the form sent home last week which asks you if your child is remaining at Carnegie Primary School in 2014. The Orientation Program for 2014 Preps will be held on Friday 8th November, Friday 15th November, Thursday 21

st November & Thursday 28

th November. The first two sessions run

between 2.15 and 3.15 .The third and fourth sessions will be from 11.45 till 1.30pm. All 2014 prep students are invited. If you would like further details, please call into the office. SCHOOL FACILITIES

Work on the shaded, tiered seating area near our Learning Centre to enhance school

grounds and add another quality outside teaching and learning space to our school will commence in the coming weeks. The tender process was finalised recently and I look forward to seeing this come to fruition before the end of the year.

I have been liaising with the DEECD Facilities branch over recent months and I have

been notified that we are to receive an additional Mod 5 double portable to cater for increased enrolments in 2014. If plans go as I wish this portable will be ready to occupy for the commencement of the 2014 school year and will be two year 4 classrooms. This new portable will be housed next to the current far portable. I will keep the community informed of progress.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES Year 1 to 6 pupils will resume on Thursday 30th January, 2014. Preps will commence on Friday 31st January. Please note the following dates in next year’s diary. The 28th and 29th January are scheduled pupil free days for 2014. On these days teachers will participate in professional development in preparation for a smooth start to the school year. LOTE LANGUAGE SURVEY Thank you to the many families who responded to our LOTE survey, gauging people’s interest in a switch of our LOTE Language program from Italian to Japanese. Although there was greater support for Japanese by parents (84 – 66), staff (14 – 10) and students (160 – 87), a decision has been made, in consultation with School Council, that there is not an overwhelming support for change at the moment and so the status quo should continue. There were some quite strong opinions articulated for both options so we believe we should further inform the community of the guidelines and opinions of the Department of Education (DEECD) and others over the next 12 months and re-visit the possibility of various changes to our LOTE program again sometime in the future.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY Friday 25th October is World Teachers’ Day. The UNESCO has declared World Teachers’ Day and it is a great opportunity for us to say ‘Thank You’ to the teachers at our school and acknowledge their professionalism and commit-ment to ensuring the students at Carnegie Primary School are cared for and well supported in their primary school education. FRIDAY MORNING ASSEMBLY Parents who have been able to join us at the end of last term will have noticed that we have asked all parents to remain outside while students and teachers enter the hall in preparation for the assembly. Once all classes are inside and settled, we’ve then invited parents in. It is quite intimate but there is space for parents and visitors down sides of the hall with most finding a spot at the rear of the hall. We thank parents for their support of this as it does make for a much smoother start to this assembly. SUN SMART FOR TERM FOUR By now all students should be wearing their sun smart hat when playing outside at recess and lunch breaks. School hats can be purchased from our Uniform Shop. Your support for this school rule is greatly appreciated as it is important we educate our students about sun smart protection strategies and the harmful effects of the sun during our warmer weather. Please note that caps are not sun smart hats.

WORDS OF WISDOM – Practice rather than preach. Make your life defined by your ideals not the negation of others.

PARENTING IDEAS BY MICHAEL GROSE – Developing Gratitude In the materialistic age in which our children are growing up, it’s common for them to expect plas-ma TVs, overseas holidays and marshmallow strewn babycinos as givens. But rising levels of affluence seem to have had an inverse effect on our kids’ levels of gratefulness. For example – when was the last time any child you know wrote a thank-you note for a gift, or said (without prompting) a heart-felt ‘thank you’ for dropping them at the train station when it was raining?

As adults, our feelings of gratitude – for health, for family, for good food and even something as simple as a sunny day – generally tend to increase. Gratitude allows us to celebrate the present. It magnifies positive emotions. But for kids, whose sense of entitlement can be epic, the power of gratitude is not only in magnifying the positive but in also blocking the toxic and negative emotions such as envy, resentment and regret. We know that grateful kids are happier and often more satisfied with their lives. Gratitude comes more naturally to some kids than others but environment can play a major role. 1. Learn to limit children's commercial

consumption and commercial activity and to maintain experiential activities that engage them in topics that they are curious about or interested in.

2. Encourage children and teens to write simple yet effective thank you notes or letters that acknowledge the efforts of teachers and coaches in their lives. Adults could also remind teens to text ‘thank-yous’ to friends who have been there for them, stood up for them, or helped them in important ways.

3. Some general but necessary habits that adults can practise and which are especially helpful early on (say with children as young as three) is to model gratitude and thankfulness regularly as well as encouraging and reinforcing such behaviours in children.

4. Help kids to process benefits with ‘grateful lenses’. That is, help them understand the importance of intent, cost and benefit when someone does something kind for them.

5. Tune into your child's interests and strengths. Nurturing this in them will give them even more to be grateful for.

Science and Sustainability News

Environmental Action Last term Grade 1s and 2s investigated many aspects of sustainability and took action to make an improvement to water and energy conservation, waste recycling and biodiversity. Gisele in Grade 1 became passionately concerned with the protection of sharks and wrote a letter to The Australian newspaper. As it is yet unpublished, I thought I would share it with our community. Dear Editor

Hi my name is Gisele and I am 7 years old in grade 1. At my school we’re learning about sustainability. When I heard that people kill sharks to make shark fin soup I was upset because it is very cruel. My focus is bio diversity on oceans. My sustainability teacher (Ms Knight) was a scientist. She knows a lot about sustainability. So I just thought I could write my letter just so people could stop killing these beautiful animals.

Thank-you

Gisele

There are many ways we can become involved in making our world a better place.

Nude Food National Day October 16th

Carnegie PS is a proud participant in this initiative and it would be great to see everyone in the school bring a nude food lunch on Wednesday 16th October. To celebrate, children will eat in their house colour groups for an outside picnic. Nude Food lunches are a regular part of our school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and many children bring Nude food every day.

Having the right container/s makes this easier and it is surprising how simple it can be once you get into the habit. What an easy sustainable action to reduce waste, such as plastic-wrappers going into landfill.

After School Care News:

Welcome back to a new term. Hope you all had quality time with your families and are

well rested for a new term.

Being Term 4 the children are required to wear a hat when going

outdoors. Going by past situations, children tend to leave their school

hats in their classrooms. So could you please provide an additional hat

for after school care, so that your child doesn’t miss out on going

outdoors? Also if you need to change your days please advise the co-ordinator in order to fill out

the appropriate paper work (in this instance a new booking form will need to be filled

out).

Also during the holiday program a scooter accidently went missing. It is a red razor

power wing. If anyone knows of its whereabouts please contact the service. The

family in question would really appreciate its safe return.
