FROM THE BOARD

Rex Heck – Second Vice President

There is still snow on the ground. Ski season is infull swing. And, we have already had our first drivingevent of the year. Eiskhana was attended by morethan 30 brave souls who endured high winds andcold to drive their Porsches on the ice at GeorgetownLake. The hardest part was driving an autocrosscourse where the wind kept moving the cones.

If you missed this event your next opportunity will bethe Autocross School & Autocross in April. Theschool is an excellent training experience. If you arenew to Porsche driving, you will learn what youPorsche will do in a safe and controlled environment. For experienced drivers, you can hone your skills. Keep an eye out for announcements. This event fills up fast.

At every Drivers’ Education event or Autocross, you will be asked to attend a mandatorydrivers’ meeting. Some of the items covered include the schedule, any last minutechanges, procedures unique to the event and, most important, safety concerns. If youmiss this meeting, you may be a hazard to yourself and others. That is why it is manda-tory. Also you may not be able to participate in the event at all. If you know you will belate to an event, contact the event chair beforehand to find out what you need to dobefore you can drive. Don’t wait until you arrive at the track; remember that the eventchair is also a participant and you will be affecting his or her ability to enjoy the activi-ties.

The summer track season is fast approaching. I took our blue car to the shop last weekto have it checked out and be ready to go. Speaking of tracks, as you have probablyheard Arapahoe County approved the Use for Special Review for High Plains Raceway. Also CAMA has closed on the land. We are now proud owners of a farmer’s field justeast of Byers. There is still a long ways to go to make it a usable track. One of the lastobstacles to completion of the track is money. One of the things I hate to do is ask peo-ple for money. I would rather enter turn 10 at Pueblo too fast than make this appeal. But now is the time. It needs to happen. I feel I will save enough on one event at HPRvs. driving to La Junta to pay for the maintenance on my car. Take a look at HPR flyerthat you received in the mail last month and open your wallet and let’s make this hap-pen.

I have been talking about high performance driving, but there is a much more to the clubthan that. There are ralleys, fun tours, membership meetings, and a host of other activi-ties. If you haven’t been to a membership meeting lately, stop by for some friendly cartalk with your friends, great snacks, and always, an interesting program. I look forwardto meeting you new members and seeing old friends at the next meeting.

8 RMR PORSCHERMR PORSCHE NEWS NEWS MARCH 2008

In high school, if not before, I was infatu-ated with cars, mostly sports cars. Wehad a sports car club using our parents’

station wagons and went to SCCA and CanAm racesin Michigan and Wisconsin as fans and volunteers.

My first car was a 1967 Firebird, only because the 356C Coupe my father and I test drove stopped becauseof an electrical gremlin during the test drive. My fatherdetermined that I should have something new andAmerican made. Hello Firebird. My whole life wouldhave been different.

Bob Brown from Storz was doing work on my Audiand made the suggestion that I should buy a usedPorsche. Made sense to me so off to Prestige I wentwith the advice to buy the newest one you can afford.Within a week I was the proud owner of an aventurinegreen ’95 993. I loved it.

Later in 1997 Nick Ham asked me if I was going to thePrestige Day at the Track. I had been invited but had-n’t really thought about it. He talked me into it andafter my first time on the track, with Nick as my instruc-tor, I was hooked. I asked how I could do this trackstuff more often and was told to join PCA.

I joined in 1997 and drivers’ education events becamemy passion. Kathy Fricke got me involved in chairingevents and convinced me to join the Board as SecondVice President. I moved up the ranks and was privi-leged to be RMR President in 2004.

During my seven years on the Board I was privilegedto serve with great people who exemplify the spirit ofvolunteerism and love for everything Porsche. Afterserving as Immediate Past President, I have been lessactive but hope to be more active next year. Thankyou to the Board of RMR for selecting me for thishonor. I am proud to join the group of RMR PorschePatrons.

SHAPING YOUR TURNS ON THE TRACK

Another subject which comes up frequently at DE events is how to deter-mine the most effective driving line through a corner. Each model ofPorsche reacts differently through the turns on the track; however, the driving technique for determining the best line though a corner is similar.

Initially, we teach the classic method of driving through a corner on the track;brake in a straight line, downshift as required, release the brakes, turn in toward the (late) apex andapply throttle through the remainder of the corner to the track out point..

Notice braking is the first action which sets up the cornering sequence. There are several brakingtechniques used for the different types of corners on the track which can be used to shape the driving line. By modulating the braking force, we can change the way weight is transferred tothrough the tires to the track and control the handling of the car through the corner.

For example, in an autocross, eiskhana or evasive driving maneuver where we want the car to over-steer and turn around very quickly; we stab the brake pedal which makes the car pitch and transfersweight to the front wheels. Then, we release the brakes and flick the steering wheel in the directionwe want the car spin, straighten the steering wheel and return to the throttle to transfer weight backto the rear wheels stabilizing the car and preventing it from turning around completely. A goodautocross or stunt driver can control the amount of oversteer precisely and turn the car around 180°in an amazingly short distance.

On a road racing track, we probably don’t want as great an amount of oversteer as described above. However, by controlling when and how much weight is transferred from the front to the rear and thesteering input; we can change the handling of the car through the turn and “shape” the corner. Conversely, many students have told me their car won’t turn in or understeers on a particular cornerof the track. Often this is just a timing problem in the input the car receives driving through a corner. The driver brakes early, coasts a while, then, returns to the throttle slowly only to find the car pushesthrough the middle of the corner.

Remember this key point when thinking about driving through corners on the track. After the brakingphase when entering a corner, extra traction is available for a short period of time due to compres-sion of the vehicles suspension system. The extra grip is due to force developed by deceleratingthe weight of the car under braking. If the driver turns the car in during this time, the additional traction can be used to help the tires develop cornering force and prevent the understeer describedabove.

Maybe this is a little too technical, Visualize what happens when braking for a corner on the track. The car “sits” down and compresses the shock absorbers in the suspension. If the braking isabrupt, the nose of the car dips and the rear of the car raises up transferring an excess amount of

Page 13: 50TH NNIVERSARY Y EAR · 2017. 8. 25. · Take a look at HPR flyer that you received in the mail last month and open your wallet and let’s make this hap-pen. ... 303-803-5683 First

13MARCH 2008 RMR PORSCHERMR PORSCHE NEWS NEWS

weight to the front. When done correctly, the car “sits” down more evenly providing more traction toall the wheels before the shock absorbers in the suspension gradually allow the car to return to thenormal height. If the driver turns into the corner before the car returns to normal, more corneringforce is available.

Trail braking utilizes this principle to keep weight on the front tires while gradually turning the steer-ing wheel toward the apex of the corner. This helps the car to turn in better, but, also can cause thecar to rotate too much and spin if not done correctly! This is an advanced technique which is betterleft to the more experienced driver. Even some of the best Formula 1 drivers still feel braking shouldbe finished prior to turning into a corner.

Next, another factor which can be used in shaping a corner is to modify the driving line entering thecorner. I have observed many drivers which utilize the archetypal wide corner entry and late apexline without attempting different approaches to improve their ability to negotiate corners. For example, on a 180° corner (i.e. Turn 1 & 4 @ Pueblo) using a slightly skewed braking line canbe beneficial. The first benefit is the additional braking area before running out of track when enter-ing the corner! Secondly, the car needs less steering input through the corner which helps to main-tain momentum through the turn resulting in higher exit speed. Finally, by moving the entry line andturn in point more toward the center of the track and, the distance the car travels through the corneris decreased which takes less time. This last point was pointed out to me (Thanks, FredSchroeder) while running at Second Creek backwards through Turn 1 and really doesmake a difference!

In conclusion, it is important to try different driving lines and “shape” your corners on thetrack. These are the kinds of things which make for interesting conversation with yourPorsche friends in the pits while waiting for your turn to drive the track.

Grant Remington and Joe WarrenEvent Chairs

First, our thanks to all the participants; withspecial thanks to those that volunteered andmade the event possible. Unfortunately afew participants only got to drive on slick icebut did not get times due to the impact ofthe weather; we’ll get you great times nextyear – weather permitting.

January 26th was a bright but windy day.The ice was almost three feet thick, Grantlaid out a challenging course and even usedwater to ice the cones in place. There were38 participants with a wide range of vehi-

cles. About 28 participants got times before the sun came out and melted a thin layer of icefreeing the cones; then the wind picked up and blew the course away! The remaining partici-pants got to drive individually out on the ice and test their abilities and vehicles but we couldnot give out times due to the loss of the course. Some cones actually made it over the spillwayand were gone forever….

Those with unofficial ice driving bragging rights for the next year are:Steve Powers – fastest overall and fastest male with studded tires

Black Crown Victoria – 81 Seconds Andy Forberg – fastest male without studded tires and fastest Porsche

Blue 996 C4S – 84 SecondsLeanne Golledge – fastest female overall (without studded tires)

Black Audi 5000 (with a Corvette Engine) – 88 Seconds

Steve and his co-driver, Joe Carrera, were representing the Stevinson PorscheSales(&Racing?)Team. Next year we want to see them out on the ice in a Porsche, say aCayman-S with studded tires...

21MARCH 2008 RMR PORSCHERMR PORSCHE NEWS NEWS

February 3, 2008

I just love the feeling when a plan comes together! In January we have realized that emotion manytimes.

The biggest achievement this month was receiving unanimous approval of the Arapahoe County Boardof County Commissioners for our Use by Special Review (USR) application. Other than the printing of the official documents, wehave now met all the regulatory requirements to operate HPR. Bill Howard (RMVR) and his company Plan West Inc provided theBoCC with a very impressive presentation. We thank the County planning staff for their support and guidance. We are especiallygrateful to Bill for all of his hard work.

I am proud to state that we now own the land to replace Second Creek. This purchase was consummated after five plus years, numerous property searches, an untold number of meetings and a lot of hard work by too many people to list in this letter. Manythanks to Tom Ragonetti (SCCA) and Jim Johnson of his firm for ensuring that CAMA was properly protected by all the closing doc-uments.

The land and permit acquisition were not even the most significant accomplishments this month. Since placing an offer on this prop-erty many concerns existed over water availability. Our change-of-use application for the existing well on the HPR property wasapproved last week. We now have a permit allowing for more water than we could ever need for commercial, domestic or irrigationuses. This is a big deal as we had all but conceded to the fact that we would have to haul water to the site. A few months back, aMercedes Club member, Reiner Haubold approached us after a fundraising meeting offering his expertise in water management. That expertise proved extremely valuable as he knew the right steps and proper questions. With the persistence of Bob Darcey(RMVR), the two patiently applied and reapplied after each denial until finally the old records for the well were found and aDepartment of Water Resources Geologist finally concluded that Reiner was correct, ruling that the well was eligible for commercialdesignation. Awesome job and both deserve many thanks.

The many members of the CAMA clubs also reached a major milestone in January as the ‘fundraising thermometer’ has surpassedtwo million dollars and is now at $2,094,000. So far we have 178 contributors who have purchased ‘Bricks’. The ‘Bricks’ start at$1,000, which is a small portion of a race weekend in Hastings or Pueblo. Have you inscribed your Brick yet?

The design, engineering and construction team have also had a busy month. The site tours and discussions in December resulted insome minor modifications to the entry and exit of the front straightaway along with the bobsled turns. Safety concerns were oneaspect but improving the fun factor has been the greatest dynamic.

Construction costs are still a major variable to be finalized. Grading estimates have fluctuated dramatically as we have madechanges to track layout and run-off areas. Estimates on compaction rates of the farmed soil have also impacted these calculations. To provide the group with the needed tools to properly determine grading and asphalt requirements we have recently hired a crew toprepare an accurate topographical survey of the construction areas. Also extensive soil sampling was recently completed and thatdata will soon be available. We anticipate that this data overlaid with the completed design, will enable the group to finally be ableto determine the best combination of dirt compaction and asphalt thickness, allowing us to obtain firm construction quotes soon.

Your clubs’ boards of directors, their CAMA representatives, our many volunteers and advisors have nearly completed their task tomake HPR a reality. Now it is up to the club members. Inscribe your ‘Brick’ today!

PORSCHE 911 GT3 RSRMOST POWERFUL RACING 911 – SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED FOR 2008

The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR launches into the new model year with extensive modifications, with itsNorth American debut scheduled this month at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring – round one ofthe 2008 American Le Mans Series.

The most powerful race car based on the Porsche 911, which last year scored wins at the 24 hourraces of Le Mans and Spa, the GT2 class win at Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, and an overall victo-ry at the Nuerburgring 24 hours, competes in the GT2 class at international long distance races. Themost distinguishing visual feature of the new GT3 RSR is the front end which received majorimprovements to the aerodynamics. The majority of innovations, however, are hidden under theweight-optimized body.

The first American team to announce that it will compete with the 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is theSonoma, Calif.-based Flying Lizard Motorsports squad, which will enter the GT2 class of the American LeMans Series with three of the new 911 race cars. Porsche factory drivers Joerg Bergmeister, Wolf Henzlerand Patrick Pilet will join veteran Darren Law and Lizard owners Seth Neiman, Lonnie Pechnik andJohannes van Overbeek in the team’s effort to win its first ALMS GT2 championship.

Other American Le Mans Series Porsche 911 GT3 RSR entrants plan to announce their plans anddriver teams shortly.

Aside from the additional spoilers on the front apron, new flicks, optimized air ducting with newly-designed side air outlets, generate more downforce and reduces drag. The rear end including therear wing was taken from last year’s race car. Extensive changes to the suspension dynamicsincrease mechanical grip considerably. The range of possible suspension set-ups have beenincreased.

The 3.8-liter boxer engine of the GT3 RSR remains unchanged apart from slight improvements todetails. It delivers 465 hp (342 kW) at 8,000 revs per minute and delivers a maximum torque of 430Nm at 7,250 revs. The rev limiter of the efficient six-cylinder kicks in at 9,400 rpm.

Much of the know-how in the GT3 RSR’s totally new gearbox has come from the Porsche RSSpyder LMP2 prototype. The sequential six-speed unit, developed by Porsche engineers, is consid-erably lighter than its predecessor. Internal friction was substantially reduced. The flat angle of thedrive shafts allows teams a wider range of suspension set-ups.

Including the GT3 Cup and the GT3 Cup S, the GT3 RSR is the third race car based on the Porsche911 offered by Porsche Motorsport. Thirty-five units of this fastest and most powerful 911 long dis-tance racer are being produced in Porsche’s R&D and Motorsports headquarters Weissach,Germany, and are currently being delivered to customer teams around the globe. The price of theGT3 RSR is $510,065.
