"I swear I would never have hit any-one, but her..."

As I sat in our couples therapist's of-fice, my husband spoke the words that would one day become his motto. State-ments were often preceded with, "I've never hit anyone," or "This wouldn't have happened if you had just ..."

This was my life for more than two years. We had known each other since 2010. The abuse didn't start until a year after marrying in 2012, after I confront-ed him about an infidelity.

Looking back on that first incident, I still think it was my fault. He told me he wanted to leave, stay with a friend that night, but I thought we should talk it out. My insistence on discussion led to being pinned down on the couch by my throat – he only stopped because I briefly lost consciousness. Episodes like this continued sporadically. I feel it was this inconsistency that led me to believe I wasn't really being abused.

It's not like the movies.The next morning, as I traced my fin-

gers over the thick bruises on my neck and arms, my husband apologized, but stated I should get counseling for my issues that led to his infidelity.

At the time, I thought the events of the night before were a fluke. He never laid a hand on me in the three years I had known him and as crazy as it sounds, it seemed like he had a valid point about my "issues.”

I separated from active-duty Air Force a few months prior and though I was still a Reservist, my confidence was rattled when I was unable to find a full-time job that matched the pride and stability my active-duty job afforded me.

I listened to him. I would get counseling, but only if he agreed to attend couples counseling. He agreed and even told the couples counselor about the "incident."

For a while, we were back to normal and seemed to be coping with our issues until we went out for beers with friends four months later. I made the “mistake” of mentioning how upset I still was

over his infidelity, as well as other acts of adultery I’d learned of from mutual friends.

When we got home, our discussion quickly escalated into an argument.

Feeling frustrated, I tried to walk away. He responded by grabbing my hair and dragging me across the floor.

As he dragged me, I sobbed, feeling idiotic for bringing up the matter. The episode was over as quickly as it began. He teared up when he saw how pathetic I looked on the floor and apologized, as-suring me it would never happen again.

It didn't happen every day or week.Things calmed for a few months after

this and though my husband ceased his sessions with our couples counselor, life seemed to be back to normal until my depression over my job status crept over me again.

He went almost a year without touch-ing me. The next three times were over issues I can't even remember. I began documenting each bruise and welt with my mobile phone camera to remind my-self I wasn't crazy. I kept telling myself, "It won't happen again. Even if it does, he's never once touched my face."

The last incident occurred a year ago. I came home from a friend's wed-ding he was unable to attend. I don't remember what led to the altercation, but I remember the blow to my face – mainly because it caused me to black out.

When I awoke five minutes later, the situation only worsened when he strangled me after I’d tried to run away. This left a mark, a particularly large one across the left side of my

face. I remember the next day at work I kept hoping someone would notice, but no one did. It dawned on me then even if they had noticed, would they honestly want to believe my husband was capable of abuse?

People don't want to believe they know the abuser or the abused.

Prior to this last hit, I always con-vinced myself these events weren't really abuse, mainly because they didn't happen every day. I compared my situation to people I felt had suf-fered "real domestic abuse.” They lived in fear every day, while I didn't know when to expect it. Though the events did cause bodily harm, the frequency wasn't enough to be "real" abuse – at least not to me.

It wasn't until I spoke to my best friend two weeks later I realized the severity of the situation I was in.

Me: "It only happened five times. ..."Her: "It should have never happened

at all.”One year later, I am fortunate I

am out of and safe from my abusive situation. I don't tell this story be-cause I want pity. Like most service members, I've survived my share of deployments to Iraq and Afghani-stan. I tell this story because the real danger of domestic violence is not the injuries your abuser inflicts on you. The real danger is how long you are willing to ignore it.

To report domestic abuse, people should contact their family advocacy office during normal duty hours. After-duty hours, people should call 9-1-1 or their local security forces squadron.

Members of the 502nd Civil Engineer Squadron have been working around the clock to keep the 12th Flying Training Wing mission operational at the Seguin Auxiliary Airfi eld in Seguin, Texas.

The construction has focused on alleviating a drainage issue that was causing fl ooding at the airfi eld.

“We had major fl ooding problems any time we had rain, which created a lot of issues with the drainage of the water and that impacted the fl ying operations,” said Christian De La Rosa, 502nd Civil Engineer Squadron and Joint Base San Antonio deputy base civil engi-neer. “It was basically shutting down the mis-sion at Seguin. Any time we even had a minor amount of rain, there was an impact.”

Due to the slope of the land, 502nd CES members had to regrade the area to channel water off the runway.

“We worked at any and all times they al-lowed us to which included evenings, week-ends, early mornings and even half days; whatever was available,” said De La Rosa. “At the point that we started it was almost a bath-tub, but when we fi nished it was the concave shape that we needed. Now when it rains the

water runs off and no longer pools.”The Seguin Auxiliary Airfi eld plays a sig-

nifi cant role in the 560th Flying Training Squadron's mission to train instructor pilots who will go on to train the next generation of fi ghter and bomber pilots.

“As an instructor pilot it’s nice to have the option of using the Seguin Airfi eld, especially when I have a student that needs to get a lot of landings in,” said Capt. John Skypeck, 560th FTS runway supervisory unit training standardization offi cer. “Using the Seguin Airfi eld is more effi cient, we typically get 1.7 times more landings in (compared to fl ying at JBSA-Randolph.) Being able to get more patterns in means I can get more training done.”

By utilizing in-house engineering support, the 502nd CES was able to reduce impact on the fl ying mission and complete a majority of the project at a fraction of the cost.

The construction cost 10 percent of what it would have cost if the work was contracted out, De La Rosa said.

“It’s a great success and it shows the capa-bility that our shops have for construction and earth moving,” said De La Rosa. “We throw challenges at our guys and they overcome them. It’s their mantra and we really appre-ciate everything that they do.”

There comes a time in every Air Force members’ career when they face a life-altering decision: what to do when their active-duty days are over.

For many enlisted members and offi -cers, continuing to serve their country as Air Force Reservists offers one option.

Air Force Reserve Command special-ists assigned to Air Force installations worldwide provide active-duty members with all the information they need to ar-rive at that decision and take the steps necessary to become a reservist.

“We talk to active-duty members about continuing their service to their country and tell them what the Air Force Reserve has to offer,” said Master Sgt. George Higgins, AFRC in-service recruiter at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. “They’re able to keep wearing the uniform and are entitled to the Reserve’s benefi ts.”

Higgins, who served on active duty for four years before becoming a Reservist

more than a decade ago, said active-duty members can apply for one of two pro-grams if they intend to serve in the Air Force Reserve.

The Palace Front program allows all members to transition to the Air Force Reserve once they have completed their enlistment contract, while the Palace Chase program gives enlisted Airmen an opportunity to join the Reserve when they have fi nished half of their fi rst active-duty agreement, he said. Offi cers must com-plete two-thirds of their fi rst active-duty contract before they can enter the Reserve through the Palace Chase program.

Briefi ngs provide enlisted members and offi cers with the information they need to chart their future following sep-aration from active duty, Higgins said. They include Palace Chase and Palace Front briefi ngs as well as a session called the Informed Decisions briefi ng. He also counsels Airmen individually.

“The “Informed Decisions“ briefi ng is just to inform all fi rst-term Airmen, 12 to 18 months from their date of separa-

tion, about the programs and opportuni-ties available to them if they do decide to separate,” he said.

At JBSA-Randolph, the Informed Decisions briefi ng occurs the fi rst or

second Tuesday of each month in build-ing 66, Higgins said.

Air Force leaders have faced issues such as aging aircraft, bird strikes and encroachment for decades, relying on counsel from various sources to help guide them to the right decisions regarding these and other serious problems.

Sometimes a historical perspective is warranted.History offi ces, located at major command and wing

levels, provide commanders and other leaders with the historical data they can use to make those choices.

“The wing historian is focused on capturing perfor-mance of our operational mission in order to give com-manders the information they need to improve combat capability,” said Lane Bourgeois, 12th Flying Training Wing historian. “We capture the operational history of the unit today – especially the important issues – so it’s here for tomorrow.”

Bourgeois, who has served as an Air Force historian for nearly 20 years, both on active duty and now as a civilian, said the relevant issues addressed by the history offi ce are found in the wing’s annual history, a multifac-eted document that informs leadership.

Although most histories cover one fi scal year, the most recently completed history spanned two fi scal years – from October 2013 to September 2015. The 187-page document contains 60,000 words, more than 300 supporting documents, 16 major topics and 16 appendices.

“Encroachment was a big part of this history,” Bourgeois said. “The history offi ce has traced it since the 1970s, when it was a big issue. Now it’s become an important issue again.”

Because encroachment started gaining promi-nence again near the end of the 2014 fi scal year due to rapid growth in surrounding communities, Bourgeois said he received approval from Air Educa-tion and Training Command leadership to extend the history through the 2015 fi scal year to give encroachment a fuller treatment.

“Encroachment issues were just starting to ramp up again,” he said. “We would have had to stop the conver-sation. We would’ve had a big break in the topic.”

The fi scal 2014-fi scal 2015 history is divided into three chapters: Leadership, Mission and Organization, which addresses changes of command, the vision and mission of the wing and the changes resulting from joint basing; Operations and Production, including encroach-ment and its potential impact on the mission as well as changes in the remotely piloted aircraft program; and Mission Support, which discusses how the wing is miti-gating the bird strike problem.

Bourgeois, who cross-trained into the history ca-reer fi eld as an active-duty member, is now work-ing on the 12th FTW’s fi scal 2016 history, which he said will be completed by April. Encroachment remains a big issue, along with topics such as the remotely piloted aircraft mission and the wing’s efforts to reduce the risks caused by bird strikes.

“These are things commanders need to know,” he said. “If you know where you’ve been and what you’ve done, you can chart a future.”

Bourgeois, who has also served as historian for the 71st FTW at Vance Air Force Base, Okla.; Air Force Recruiting Service and the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base, Italy, said he enjoys writing unit histories.

“It’s a lot of work, but doing it, you get a tremendous amount of satisfaction,” he said. “I do my best to bring structure to the document.”

Most wings have one historian, Bourgeois said, but the 12th FTW – which comprises the 12th Operations Group, the 306th Flying Training Group at the U.S. Air Force Academy, the 479th FTG at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., and the 12th Maintenance Directorate, which will soon receive group status – has two historians.

In addition to Bourgeois, who is assigned to 12th FTW headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, a historian at the 479th FTG headquarters is responsible for documenting the combat systems offi cer mission.

Bourgeois’ duties can be divided into four categories, he said. He handles administrative tasks, collects data for the unit’s history, writes the history and responds to queries from wing staff and squadron personnel as well as the general public.

“I usually average about 10 queries per month,” he said. Query topics range from unit lineage, honors and emblems to the issues faced by leadership.

Much of the data collected by the history offi ce is preserved digitally, but Bourgeois said he can also rely on the wing’s history repository contained in a room adjacent to his offi ce in building 200, especially when responding to queries.

The repository, a giant automated fi ling cabinet that rises more than 20 feet, includes photos, vid-eos and many thousands of pages worth of docu-ments, reports and other written material dating back more than 60 years.

The role of historians is proactive since they work as researchers and reporters, attending meetings, talking to subject-matter experts and collecting doc-uments, photos and videos that chronicle the unit’s history, Bourgeois said.

“The biggest challenge for me is collecting documents – getting the kind of information I need to produce a good history for the unit,” he said.

It’s important to inform leaders of the historian’s role, Bourgeois said. It’s not just about the past.

“We’re interested in what units are doing now,” he said.

re-enlistment and what to expect when entering the ci-vilian world, the Palace Chase and Palace Front brief-ings focus specifi cally on Air Force Reserve options, he said. Palace Chase briefi ngs are scheduled quarterly and Palace Front briefi ngs are held monthly.

Serving as a Reservist offers several advantages, Higgins said.

“The main advantage is the fl exibility the Reserve of-fers,” he said.

Traditional Reservists serve 39 days a year – one weekend a month plus two weeks a year – while in-dividual mobilization augmentees have the ability to complete all service days at once.

The Air Force Reserve’s health care program is an-other plus for Reservists, Higgins said.

“It’s called TRICARE Reserve Select,” he said. “It costs less than $50 per month for an individual and less than $225 per month for families.”

Because most Reservists also have jobs in the civil-ian sector, the Reserve provides them with additional income, said Higgins, who also serves as an in-service recruiter at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, and at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston. Master Sgts. Karen Ericson and Cindy Rositas serve JBSA-Lackland as in-service re-cruiters; Rositas also serves half of the Air Force popula-tion at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.

Still other benefi ts of being a reservist include op-portunities for advancement, paid vacation, train-ing, tuition assistance and access to base exchanges, commissaries, fi tness centers and other amenities.

The Air Force Reserve has proved to be a popular

option for active-duty members assigned to JBSA-Randolph, Higgins said.

“More than 33 percent of all qualifi ed separating active-duty members continued their service in the Reserve during the last fi scal year,” he said.

Higgins said he fi nds satisfaction in his job by being able to make sure active-duty members have all the information to make the best decision moving forward for them and their families.

“I would hate to know that there was someone I could have helped make a better decision only if they had the information to do so,” he said.

Although she is younger by 19 minutes, Staff Sgt. Codi Goodwin never misses an opportunity to brag about her older fraternal twin sister or tell people she also happens to be stationed at Joint Base San Antonio.

“Whenever we get new command in, they always go around the room and ask one thing about you, so I always brag that I have a twin sister at Lackland,” said Goodwin, 359th Medical Group health service manage-ment craftsman, stationed at JBSA-Randolph.

With nearly 100 installations spanning three continents, Goodwin and Senior Airman Kaley Weir know it’s a rare opportunity for siblings to be stationed in the same place, and they plan to take advantage of it for as long as the Air Force allows them to do so.

“With twins in the military, you would think they’d be at different bases,” said Goodwin. “But we’re 20 to 30 minutes away from each other, so that’s pretty sweet. You just don’t see that combination.”

But the Seal Beach, Calif., natives didn’t both end up at JBSA by chance. While in technical training, Weir received an assignment to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., but switched with a fellow classmate to go to JBSA-Lackland.

After seeing the amount of respect her father, a re-tired Navy master chief petty offi cer, received at work, Goodwin said she knew from around her sophomore year of high school she wanted to join the Air Force.

Weir, however, didn’t have the same career aspirations and planned to go off to college.

After spending two summers in a Toyota parts factory working in welding, Weir was ready for a change.

“I didn’t want to join when she did,” said Weir, 802nd Security Forces Squadron corrections specialist. I knew she did it, and I thought it was too scary. I didn’t want to leave my friends. I tried the college thing, and I re-ally didn’t like it.

“I wasn’t going anywhere,” continued Weir. “I saw how good she [Goodwin] was doing and I said, ‘I have to try that.’”

So three years after Goodwin enlisted, Weir raised her right hand and joined the Air Force in 2013.

Now Weir works at the confi nement facility at JBSA-Lackland Medina Annex, a job she applied and was se-lected for. She achieved senior airman below the zone and has been selected for staff sergeant, which she will

put on in May or June 2017. All of which wouldn’t have been possible if her twin hadn’t joined before her, she said.

While the sisters know they won’t be at the same base forever, they’re enjoying spending as much time together as possible, watching movies while Weir cooks her special, shrimp tacos, for Goodwin and her hus-band and Weir’s boyfriend. They also meet up with their cousin, Genny, who is also stationed at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.

And although they aren’t identical, they still get a laugh at being occasionally mixed up as the other at the gate.

“It’s going to be so boring when I PCS,” said Goodwin. “I always have something to do or somewhere to go [with Weir]. I feel like actually not a lot of people have that. People think the military keeps you away from your family, but obviously, it brought us closer.”

Joint Base San Antonio Outdoor Recreation offers several options for active-duty members, retirees and Department of Defense civilians and their families who are planning activities during the holiday season.

Whether it’s for an outdoor or indoor activity, JBSA Outdoor Recreation rents out equipment at all three JBSA locations, items include equipment for camping, fi shing, boating, family gatherings, birthdays, sports ac-tivities and home and garden chores.

JBSA Outdoor Recreation has a wide selection of rental equipment, including tables, chairs, bounce houses, cotton candy and popcorn machines, marga-rita machines, dunk tanks and canopies for gatherings and birthday parties, and camping and cargo trailers, as well as camping accessories, kayaks, canoes, boats, water accessories, trash cans, coolers, grills, grill acces-sories and generators for outdoor activities.

“We have everything you can possibly need for family and social gatherings,” said Trever Gilman, 502nd Force Support Squadron assistant community services fl ight chief for recreation.

Gilman said JBSA Outdoor Recreation staff members instruct customers how to set up and operate specifi c equipment for indoor and outdoor activities.

Military members, retirees and government civilians can reserve any of the parks at all JBSA locations for gatherings and birthday parties through JBSA Outdoor Recreation. Parks include Salado Park, located on 13 acres next to Salado Creek at JBSA-Fort-Sam Houston; Stillman Park, Upson Park Pavilion, Lion Park and Stapleton Park at JBSA-Lackland; and Eberle Park at JBSA-Randolph.

Most of the JBSA parks have amenities including pic-nic tables, grills, pavilions, trash cans, restrooms and playground equipment.

For military members and their families who want to take a trip out of town during the holidays, there is the JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake, located 52 miles north of San Antonio. The park is on 254 acres on Canyon Lake. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake offers a safe getaway for military members, retirees and their families which is close by, Gilman said.

“It has a controlled entry,” he said. “It’s a nice getaway from San Antonio and it’s a nice park. It has a lot of amenities that are offered for families.”

JBSA members can reserve any of the park’s 81 lodg-ing units, day-use picnic areas and pavilions, camping facilities and sites at its RV park, which has both full-service and electricity-only sites with restrooms, laundry facilities and dump stations available.

The park has three lakefront beaches with grills, pic-nic tables, pavilions and restrooms and two marinas operated by the park. Park patrons can rent ski, fi shing, pontoon and paddles boats, canoes and kayaks at the Hancock Cove Marina, or bring their boat and rent a slip at the Sunnyside Marina.

In addition, the park has a country store that provides food items, beverages, fi shing gear and other items for purchase.

During December, rates for both the bunkhouses and bungalows at the JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake are half price. Bunkhouses can be reserved for $12.50 per night, bungalows for $17.50 per night. The bunk-house includes air conditioning, heating, a refrigerator and room to sleep four people. The bungalow comes with a refrigerator, sink, microwave, a full-size bed, bunk beds, room for four people to sleep, air condition-ing, heating and a bathroom with a hot shower. Park patrons must bring their own linen for both accommo-dations.

Boat rentals at the park are also half price in December. Cost includes required safety equipment such as life vests, but does not include fuel. Before tak-ing the boat on the lake, park patrons must take the Boater’s Safety Course through the state of Texas. The boating safety course is offered at the JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake or any of the Outdoor Recreation locations at JBSA installations. Boat rentals are on a fi rst-come, fi rst-serve basis.

The JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake is open year-round from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, from Oct. 1 to April 30 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday from May 1 to Sept. 30.

This year’s General John P. Jumper Information Dominance Outstanding Civilian Award was awarded to Michael Boykin, 502nd Communications Squadron Information Technology project manager from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

The Information Dominance Award recognizes individuals for superior per-formance and outstanding contribution to Air Force or Department of Defense warfi ghting integration and operations support capabilities that reduce cyber at-tacks and enhance the decision cycle.

Boykin handled the installation of 120 laptops in each classroom of the Airman Training Complex and Dining and Class-room Facility’s dorms. He called this sig-nifi cant project that landed him the award a “major undertaking.”

“You have 16 classrooms set up with laptops in each dorm and they are com-munications intensive,” Boykin said. “The equipment supports Airmen as they are coming through Air Force basic military training and they are able to complete certain training in these classroom en-vironments prior to going to their fi rst permanent duty station.”

In light of his accomplishment Boykin is not resting on his laurels.

Boykin is in discussions with commu-nications carriers about establishing four-gigabyte coverage across Joint Base San Antonio. The plan would entail cell tower construction at all four installations.

“Phone users at JBSA-Camp Bullis don’t have the same phone capabili-ties that people at other JBSA locations have,” he explained about the need for four-gigabyte coverage. “We want to alleviate that problem so our leader-

ship in their forward thinking is seeing how they can go about providing this capability and doing it in a way that doesn’t the tax the government from a funding standpoint.”

The ability to tackle different projects is what persuaded John Collums, 502nd CS Project Management chief, to nominate Boykin for the award.

Collums commended him for being a “high caliber professional” that excels at his job and never retreats from a challenge.

“Michael’s positive attitude always comes across as a force multiplier,” said Collums. “He assembles a team, manages all phases of the installation, and ensures that nothing is left to chance.”

Operating on various projects is what Boykin loves about the communications fi eld since entering the fi eld 24 years ago as an Airman. He has served as 502nd CS IT project manager since 2012 after retiring from the Air Force after 20 years of service.

He credits God for “fi nding the perfect niche for things that I have been gifted to do” while deferring to his employees for his success.

“I would rather celebrate the things 502nd CS have done as whole because it’s not just about one person,” Boykin said. I wouldn’t be talking to you if not for the efforts of our cable and networking shops and the efforts of the project management partners who support me.”

“I work with a lot of smart people and I leverage their knowledge,” Boykin said. “I have been blessed to pull from that knowledge and put it together so com-manders use that information to keep airplanes fl ying and ultimately warfi ght-ers have the capabilities needed to win the war.”

Career Assistance Advisors are an often under-utilized resource available to Airmen. In addition to answering career and retirement questions, they can also assist Airmen with fi nding which professional development classes they can most benefi t from.

Advisors can answer questions related to retraining options, retirement and issues with Air Force forms. If they don’t know the answer, they can connect you with the people who do.

“The primary goals of career assistance advisors are professional development and providing career guidance to help Airmen make informed decisions,” said Senior Master Sgt. Sarah Sullivan, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland career assistance advisor. “We’re here to help. These are people’s lives we’re dealing with. If there’s a gap in the process, we fi ll it.”

Career assistance advisors can also help Airmen fi nd developmental courses which would be the most ben-efi cial to their careers.

Developmental courses are taught by volunteers

across JBSA who want to have a positive impact on the lives and careers of Airmen, said Master Sgt. Elliott Velez, JBSA-Randolph career assistance advisor. The volunteer system not only empowers Airmen to bring their ideas forward and use their skills to teach oth-ers, but also encourages other Airmen to follow in their footsteps.

“The Career Assistance Advisor Program is the road-way to professional development, however, the car is driven by the Airmen,” Velez said.

Sullivan and Velez encourage Airmen to take advan-tage of professional development courses. A variety of topics are covered in the courses, but focus on helping Airmen understand Air Force processes such as the Airmen Retraining Program, Palace Chase and the Enlisted Commissioning processes.

“True success comes from learning the process,” Sullivan said. “You can then use the process to your advantage.”

Some of the upcoming courses being offered across JBSA include a strategic writing seminar, senior non-commissioned offi cer leadership development, fl ight chief course, creating a successful organization, John

Maxwell’s 21 indispensable qualities of a leader and fi rst term airman center profession of arms center of excel-lence briefer training, just to name a few.

“If Airmen come with an open and trainable mind, they’ll get something they can add to their toolbox every time,” Velez said.

Airmen of all ranks should take it upon themselves to seek opportunities for growth, Velez continued.

One of Velez’s favorite John Maxwell quotes is “change is inevitable but growth is optional.”

Velez feels this statement is important because he be-lieves “by stepping outside your comfort zone and being momentarily uncomfortable, you can become a stronger person and a stronger Airman.”

Career Assistance Advisors pave the road to professional success

Joint Base San Antonio bowling centers will be offer-ing family activities, a giveaway and special game rates for bowlers during the holiday season.

Holiday activities begin Dec. 17 at the JBSA-Randolph Bowling Center, building 870, with "Bowling with Santa and the Grinch" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $12 per child, which includes two games of bowling, rental shoes and a goodie bag. Both Santa Claus and the Grinch will visit, bowl and take photos with children. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

Children who will not be bowling can also have their picture taken with Santa Claus and the Grinch for $6 from 9-10 a.m.

Steve Barinque, JBSA-Randolph Bowling Center man-ager, said both children and adults will have a fun time at the event.

"It's pretty awesome," Barinque said. "The families are all on the lanes, and it's a festive time. There is a lot of interaction between the kids, Santa and the Grinch."

The JBSA-Randolph Bowling Center has special rates for bowling - $2.50 per game per person and $2.50 shoe rental - from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 21-23; 1-8 p.m. Dec. 26; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 31. From noon to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, people can bowl for $1.50 per game, with $2.50 shoe rental.

In addition, the JBSA-Randolph Bowling Center is of-fering special packages for families to bowl. The Family Day Special, from 1-6 p.m. Christmas Eve, costs $40 and includes two hours of unlimited bowling for up to six

bowlers, shoe rental, a 16-ounce soda for each family member and a large pizza; and the Day After Christmas Special, from 1-8 p.m. Dec. 26, includes two hours of bowling, shoe rentals, a 20-ounce soda for each family member and one large pizza per lane for $50.

Whether they are bowling with friends or family, bowlers will have a good time when they stop by the JBSA-Randolph Bowling Center during the holiday sea-son, Barinque said.

"They can have fun and spend some family time and eat, bowl and be merry," he said.

At the JBSA-Lackland Skylark Bowling Center, building 6476, "Bowl with the Grinch" will be from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 17. Chil-dren ages 18 and younger will get to bowl one game for free, take a picture with the Grinch and receive a snack and refresh-ment. While their children are having fun, parents can bowl for $1 per game with a $1 shoe rental.

The JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Bowling Center, building 2521, will have its holiday giveaway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 20-23. For each game they bowl, bowlers will re-ceive a ticket to enter a draw-ing for a $50 gift card, with drawings at noon and 2 p.m. each day.

The 502nd Civil Engineering Squadron was awarded a U.S. Air Force Design Award for bringing a pair of recently-completed building structures located in the Airman Training Complex at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland into the digital age.

The Air Force Design Award annually recognizes the top level of innovative building design across the service. The ATC development project stands alongside other fel-low award-winning projects located at Scott Air Force Base, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Minot Air Force Base.

The two structures, ATC Dorm No. 3 and Dining Class-room Facility No. 2, are part of a six-building quadrangle consisting of four dorms and two dining facilities that caters to thousands of Air Force trainees each year.

The award recognized the building project as a “tre-mendous” technological upgrade over the old “thou-sand-man dorms of yesteryear,” said Camilo Morales, 502nd CES supervisor and team lead.

“This award is a big feather in our cap, both for the civil engineering squadron as a whole and for all Joint Base San Antonio,” Morales said. “It’s arguably the most prestigious engineering award we’ve gotten here at JBSA-Lackland.”

Work at the JBSA-Lackland ATC included a laundry list of impressive upgrades, Morales noted.

Dorm No. 3 is a 280,000 square foot, four-story struc-ture that houses up to 1,250 Airmen. DCF No. 2, at 108,000 square feet, can accommodate up to 2,500 Air-men dining within a 90 minute period. DCF includes a fi rst fl oor dining hall, while the second and third fl oors

contain eight auditorium-style classrooms that can ac-commodate 120 students each.

Both structures are part of an ongoing ATC proj-ect aimed to replace the “old, outdated” 1,000-man dorms with bigger, more technologically advanced and much more energy-efficient struc-tures, Morales explained.

“The energy savings on these new buildings are just incredible,” Morales explained. “The old dorms were just energy hogs. We were just wasting an unbelievable amount of energy. Now these new buildings operate a lot smoother and more effi cient, even though they’re about 250 people larger.”

DCF classrooms are equipped with laptop connections and other digital upgrades.

“The old thousand-man dorms didn’t have all these high-tech communication abilities,” Morales said. “That’s something we’ve never had before.”

The award committee jurors were particularly im-pressed with the DCF building, which combined cafete-ria and educational space, said Dave Duncan, Air Force Design Award program manager.

“This is ‘mixed-use’ done the right way,” Duncan said. “The jurors made a big deal out of the dining hall being right under the classrooms. Airmen trainees are always on a tight schedule, so this design ensured that Airmen signifi cantly cut down on travel time.”

Jurors also praised the composition of the two struc-tures, Duncan noted.

“With the rotation of trainees through this facility, the buildings are going to be subject to a lot of hard use,” Duncan explained. “So the designers selected some du-rable but really attractive materials.”

Morales agreed.

“All the materials, the technology, the engineering, the utilities – everything on this project was just so well thought-out,” he said.

Morales and Duncan both deferred much of the credit for the award to Merrick & Company, a national con-tracting fi rm that partnered with the 502nd CES for the project. Merrick & Co.’s San Antonio branch oversaw an eight-month planning stage for the structures, which included design work and construction administration services.

The company’s top priority was helping JBSA-Lackland build a “durable, beautiful” ATC facility, said Tammy Johnson, Merrick & Co. spokeswoman.

“We needed to design something that looked good and lasts forever,” Johnson said. “We were motivated to produce a sustainable design, so we really focused on energy and water use effi ciency as well.”

The ATC project represents an ongoing partnership between JBSA and Merrick & Co. which continues to fi ll several government contracts at installations across the nation, Johnson noted.

“It has been Merrick’s honor to work, and contin-ue working with JBSA-Lackland and the Air Force,” Johnson said. “We’ve relied on the expertise and friendship of numerous individuals across many organizations at JBSA-Lackland along the way. It’s been a true team effort.”

Helping the 502nd CES win an Air Force Design Award was an added bonus for Johnson.

“We’re beaming with pride to have been involved with two projects that directly support the men and women who serve our country,” Johnson said. “And we can’t say enough how rewarding it is to be recognized for an Air Force Design Award as a result.”

“Trusted Care” is all about transforming the Air Force Medical Service, or AFMS, into an organization that con-sistently produces outcomes better than expected no matter what the operational environment. This means training medical Airmen to better engage with their patients, provide better overall care, reduce harm and continually engage in process improvement.

These aren’t new aims for the AFMS, which has al-ways strived to provide the best healthcare, but Trusted Care is about applying real, practical change to help medical Airmen attain those goals. It’s something that has been ongoing for many years and will continue going forward because Trusted Care is not simple.

“Healthcare is a complex endeavor. There are a lot of things that can go wrong,” said Col. John Oh, Air Force Medical Support Agency’s chief of preventive medicine. “Zero harm seems like a utopian idea, but it’s not. That’s what this whole high-reliability organization concept is all about. If we put in some of the principles that have

been successful both in healthcare and outside health-care we can achieve Zero Harm.”

Zero Harm is a key result from an organization built on Trusted Care, and it gets there by building on a series of principals, including cultural enablers and domains of change.

The cultural enablers include “Duty to Speak Up,” “Respect for People” and “Commitment to Resilience.” They are guiding principles that need to be embraced across the AFMS to create a foundation for change and results.

Col. Gianna Zeh, Air Force Medical Operations Agency vice commander, believes these enablers are essential to establishing a line of communication between leaders and the Airmen who work for them.

“Once you’re communicating, people will articulate what they’re doing,” she said. “Once they tell you what they’re working on, they’ll tell you what they’re strug-gling with.”

The domains of change include ‘Leadership Engagement,’ a ‘Culture of Safety,’ and ‘Continu-ous Process Improvement’ all while focusing on

patient centeredness. “We’d like process improvement with a patient

centered focus to become ingrained in the medical culture. Let’s make it a natural way of doing busi-ness. It’s not something new. It’s just the way we approach care,” said Col. Tim Stevens, the project offi cer for Trusted Care Patient Centeredness at AFMSA. “If we can make improvements in the sys-tem, we can get back to what drew many people to this area of work: providing and caring for other people.”

The more medical providers build on those principles and mold them into a patient-centered focus, the closer they get to the ultimate results of zero harm and maxi-mizing value for the patient.

“Ultimately it’s about providing care for the patients that we would want for ourselves. I think everyone who has been in the position of a patient or family member wants to feel like they’re being heard. When we can meet the needs of our patient population, it translates into better health, better outcomes and better readi-ness,” Oh said.

The latest twist on “phishing” is “spear phish-ing.” No, it's not a sport, it's a scam and you're the target.

Spear phishing is an email appearing as though it was from an individual or business you know, but it’s not. It's from the same criminal hackers who want your credit card and bank account numbers, passwords, and the fi nancial information on your personal computer.

Unfortunately, the growth and impact of phishing emails is on the rise. A recent Osterman Research survey found 41 percent of organizations surveyed have lost sensitive data from an employee’s com-puter and 24 percent have lost sensitive data from a corporate network.

One of the most targeted victims are government organizations likely to possess sensitive information such as login credentials and passwords. The report found “one of the primary reasons that phishing is so effective is that many email users are not suffi -ciently skeptical or discriminating about suspicious emails, often because they lack training about how to identify phishing attempts. Our research has found that once users are trained about phishing, they are

less susceptible to these attempts.” Spear phishing has become the more successful

vector when it comes to email-based compromise due to the potential victims providing phishers with more information than they need in order for them to craft appropriate looking messages.

The rise of social media places a great deal of information at the attacker’s fi ngertips. More often than not, individuals will post sensitive information about their lives, giving the attackers the information needed to successfully compromise the victim.

The best way to ensure spear phishing does not become a more serious problem is training. Organi-zations must know what spear phishing emails look like and how to differentiate the emails. Otherwise, the next batch of email leaks may be because the individual was not properly trained.
