IF NOT NOW, WHEN?I once taught a ‘Disciple’ Bible Study class and one of

the persons who came, talked about how it was pretty tough to work the class into her busy schedule of caring for her husband and raising three children as well as being active in the church, but she continued, “I’ve never done this before, but I’m 40 years old, if not now—when?”

Some years ago I was at the end of a two-day continuing education workshop and the presenter said, “If you don’t integrate what you learned into your church structure and practice in two days, you never will.”

Several years ago I was answering questions on a health survey the Conference was taking and it was asking about exercise: “if you do not presently exercise regularly, when will you begin doing so?” The answers were something like a) tomorrow b) one week c) in a month d) 6 months. I put down “c” because I knew that was realistic – I knew I wouldn’t get that change made right away—but it made me again think—yes but if you go too long you still won’t do it even though know you should.

2

I was pleased to hear, after Sunday’s sermon from the “Whisper” series, that some people had immediately tried driving in their cars without the radio on or CDs being played in order to ‘quiet their soul’ and be ‘attentive to God’s voice.’

The question remains concerning deepening our relationship with Jesus, growing deeper in our faith, becoming whole persons in Christ or learning to walk in the Spirit’s power---if not now, when?

Is there a change you need to make?Is there a change you and Jesus need to make together?

If not now, when?Pastor Bobb

(Now that you’ve read the article, go back & actually answer those last three questions and act on them.)

Spring is here and it’s time for an update on ReNEW Student Ministries. Speaking of spring, it was FINALLY warm enough recently for us to get

outside for some “human fooseball!”

In April we had a big group of students and adults from the church watch the powerful movie “I Can Only Imagine.”

4

Later in the month we attended the Rend Collective concert in Rock Island.

For the month of May, middle and high school students will NOT meet on Mother’s Day, May 13th or Sunday, May 27th because of the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

May 6th- Join us in the 11am service for Confirmation Sunday as we confirm our Confirmation class.

May 20th- Join us in our Sunday services as we recognize and pray for our high school graduates for 2018.

It will be later in August before we return to this weekly Sunday schedule. Stay tuned for details on special summer events for middle and high school students. Veggie Tales and So Much More

Children's Church will continue to dish out healthy portions of veggies ... Veggie Tales that is.  This video series helps us focus each week on specific Christian

values and scripture.  Most recently we have shared how God is with us always and how we can do big things with God's help.  We've also witnessed to the truth that lying is not part of God's plan for His people.  Currently, as we look to the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho, we're learning to trust God's instructions, even when they don't seem to make sense to us.

We plan to do some marching around the walls of our church, when we get a warm Sunday in May, as we celebrate our annual March for Jesus.  Also, don't forget to mark your calendars for Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13. The children will sing a special "Medley of Joy", consisting of Ho-Ho-Ho-Hosanna, I've Got the Joy, and Ah-La-La-La.  Have Dad drop off the kids at 9:00 a.m. in the music room, while Mom gets a few extra ZZZs.  We'll sing at the end of the early service, and again after Sunday School at the start of the 11:00 a.m. service.  There will be Children's Church up in the Chapel in the Sky every Sunday in May.

Sincere thanks and appreciation to our church

family for your support and help as we celebrated

World Vision and Heartwork

“And if you SPEND YOURSELVES” on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will SHINE in the darkness… Isaiah 58:10

At the start of 2018 our youth began a journey together called “30 Days of Heartwork.” During this time we were challenged to make the needs of others more important than ourselves. With God’s help and the support of the church, the youth also raised $2,000 for UMCOR and the disaster relief they provide to those in need. It was an awesome start to the year!

At a recent Christian concert we attended everyone in the audience was challenged to consider sponsoring a child through World Vision. All I know in that moment was that I needed to raise my hand to indicate that I wanted to receive a brochure with a child’s name and information on it. Here is the child I received that night.

Ma is seven years old and lives in Myanmar with her parents, 1 brother, and 2 sisters. Her parents struggle to provide for the family. Her mom and dad are both farmers and despite their efforts, it is difficult to meet the family’s needs.

I talked with the students and youth leaders who came that night and we agreed that we wanted to make this an extension of the Heartwork campaign and help this child through our monthly financial support. Our $39 a month will help enable good health, education, spiritual nurture, and protection for Ma. If you would like to reach out to our youth for some special service projects to help us with our monthly support of Ma please do so. We are

7

excited to see how God will use our support and prayers to make a positive impact on Ma’s life!

For more information about World Vision you can go to their website: www.worldvision.org. For more information on Heartwork: www.heartwork.tv.

50 reasons to celebrate The United Methodist Church

By Fran Coode Walsh*

Five decades is always an important milestone, and 2018 marks the Big 5-0 for The United Methodist Church. That’s the reason we’ve compiled a quick list of 50 reasons the world is a better place thanks to the witness and work of the people of the UMC.

There are so many more we could list and you surely have your own reasons. We encourage you to share them using #UMC50.

8

Our people

1. John Wesley, who was called to create a movement, that grew into a church. He could’ve been a Jedi,really.2. Susanna Wesley, whose steadfast faith and bold witness inspired her children and made her the true “Mother of Methodism.”    3. The 750,000 members of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and 10.3 million members of the Methodist Church who came together in the tumultuous year of 1968 and created a new church. 4. More than 300 missionaries who serve across the world. 5. So many amazing kids, doing so many acts of kindness for their neighbors. 6. Leaders and trailblazers like Bishop Joaquina Filipe Nhanala of Mozambique, who is the first female United Methodist bishop in Africa. 7. Young adults sharing their gifts, like blind artist Jeff Hanson who has raised millions for charity. 8. Our bishops, past and present. You can get to know more about their personal faith journeys in podcasts, like the one with Bishop Harald Rückert of Germany who had a previous career in food technology. 9. The Methodist mother-daughter team who created a holiday for moms. 10.  Members of the two United Methodist churches that were the first to host Father’s Day celebrations.

Our places

11. The Philippines, where United Methodists care deeply about climate change and planted more than 3,000 trees on Mindanao.

12. Washington, DC, where we have the only non-governmental bldg. on Capitol Hill and it has a green roof!

13. Honduras, where the only United Methodist church in Latin Americais found.

14. Kansas, where a United Methodist Church houses the world’s largest stained glass window.

15. Congo, where ministries like the Goma Orphanage offer job skills and education to those struggling after wars.:

16. China, where United Methodists continue to support Chinese Christians and promote ecumenical dialogue.

17. Côte d’Ivoire, where The Voice of Hope radio station transmits to more than 1 million people in 18 languages daily.

9

18. Alaska, where United Methodists preserve Native culture and share God’s message no matter the weather.

19. New Jersey, where “God’s Square Mile” can be found on the beach at Ocean Grove.

20. Sierra Leone, where the United Methodist University of Sierra Leone opened in Freetown in 2017.

Our musicians

21. Charles Wesley, whose hymns were considered as influential in the Methodist movement as his brother John’s sermons.

22.   Fanny Crosby, a blind, musical visionary who penned "Blessed Assurance" and more than 8,000 songs in her lifetime.

23. Choir members the world over, who use their talents to praise God and grow their own faith while inspiring others with their music.

24. The Amazing Grace Guitar Ministry in Dallas, that offers young people lessons and rewards them with a guitar as part of a mentorship program.

25. The Africa University Choir, who sang for South Carolina United Methodists in the wake of the 2015 shootings at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

26. Composer, conductor and teacher Jane Marshall who debuted in a big way with the anthem "My Eternal King."

27. Ukelele choirs like the one from Frisco, Texas with musicians aged 8 to 60, who performed at the 2016 General Conference.

28. Betty Trotter, who has played the piano for Spring Creek United Methodist Church in Tennessee for more than 70 years.

29. Beyonce, who sang her first solo at her home church, St. John’s UMC in Houston. In 2017, she teamed with her pastor Rudy Rasmus and the congregation to help survivors of Hurricane Harvey.

30. The Steel Pan Ministry at Westchester UMC in the Bronx, which combines the influences of many cultures to create a unique orchestra that serves the church and the community.

Our mission

31. To alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing. Since 1940, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has been providing aid to families like those hurt by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

32. To focus on ministries with women, children and youth. 800,00 United Methodist Women work across the globe, including in Liberia where UMW offered meals and lifesaving information during the

10

Ebola outbreakof 2014.

33. “To empower the ministry of Jesus Christ through men within the congregations of the UMC.” United Methodist Men offers spiritual resources, like Strength for Service devotionals for the U.S. military.

34. To volunteer in relief efforts around the world. Volunteers in Mission do construction, teach, conduct medical clinics, lead Bible study, and more.

35. To plant new churches and encourage congregations to “see all the people.” One vibrant example is Embrace Church in northern California, which launched in July 2015.

36.  To discern God’s call in our lives and use our spiritual gifts. 37.  To address the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of all. The

church’s Abundant Health initiative encourages members to embrace healthy living and hula-hoops.

38.  To support the rights of workers and fight for a living wage. Learn ways you can support worker justice.

39.  To remember our role as stewards of God’s earth and care for Creation.

40.  To recognize the sin of racism and seek racial justice. Learn ways you can take a stand against racism.

Our method

41.  Core spiritual practices, which led to the nicknames for early Methodists.

42.  Our Wesleyan heritage, which put an emphasis on “practical divinity.”43. A history of disciple-shaping groups, the foundation of the movement. 44.  The Articles of Religion and other foundational documents. 45.  Four theological guidelines. 46.  Sacraments and sacramental acts, which are part of our life’s journey 47.  Prayer, which comforts and connects us. 48. Our Social Principles and Social Creed, which guide our thinking and

acting. 49. General Conference, which is the only body that speaks officially for

the church. 50.  Our history, which gives us roots and can inspire us today.

We need YOUR help with

Summer Special Music and Altar Flowers!

Sign-up sheets are located at the back of the church for two

worship opportunities.

MUSIC-During the summer months, while the Chancel Choir and Hallelujah Ringers take a break, there is a need for Special Music at the 8:30 a.m. services.  If you have a musical talent and would like to share, please select a date, list your name, contact information, and if you will need an accompanist.  April Blount is willing to play the piano or organ, and offer assistance, if needed.

FLOWERS-On Sundays when the Worship Committee does not have a special arrangement on the altar, members of our congregation are encouraged to provide flowers.  This can be done on your own, by going to a flower shop or using garden flowers, or by contacting Mary to make arrangements for a florist to have them delivered.  The cost for this service is $35, and payment must be made in advance. The flowers can be given in memory or in honor of someone or to commemorate a special occasion.  Indicate this on the sign-up sheet or let the office know by Tuesday morning, prior to the Sunday observance.

Fumc News - Staff ChangesMany of you have heard the news about Pastor Bobb

being appointed to another church. None of us, including Pastor Bobb, was aware that this was going to happen, but within the United Methodist Church, ordained clergy, like Pastor Bobb, agree to go wherever the Bishop and Cabinet (made up of the 8 Conference Superintendents) have prayerfully determined they should serve. Each ordained pastor understands that they could technically be moved every year or at anytime, though the rule-of-thumb is that moves happen between 5-12 years. By July 1st, when appointments typically begin across the Conference, Pastor Bobb will have served the Clinton First for 11 years. There are over 40 churches coming open because of retirements and moves to non-local-church ministries, so this is a year of a lot of pastoral changes.           Pastor Bobb's move does not affect Michael's position and because Michael is hired, rather than appointed, he is not subject to being moved by the Bishop. Michael will continue as the Lay Ministry Assistant at First Church.             Pastor Bobb is being appointed to Adel UMC in Adel, Iowa which is just West of Des Moines. Adel is experiencing explosive housing growth and is soon to be a suburb of Des Moines. Challenges facing the Adel church, which is a little smaller than Clinton in average worship attendance, are reaching, welcoming and engaging the many new people coming and within a few years to build a new church building, as God directs, to handle the growth.             Pastor Bobb will be with Clinton First through June. Appropriate 'send-off' and 'welcome' celebrations will be planned by our Staff-Parish Relations Committee.

20

PASTOR CHRISTINA SUNG APPOINTED TO CLINTON FIRST UMC

The appointment of Pastor Christina Sung to Clinton First was announced Sunday at both worship services. Our Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee met with our Conference Superintendent, Kiboko Kiboko and Pastor Christina last Sunday afternoon to begin the process of receiving her as our Lead Pastor beginning July 1, 2018.

Pastor Christina grew up Buddhist in her native Korea and accepted Jesus as

her Savior and Lord through Korean Christian friends when she was studying in Germany. She has earned a Doctorate, has been a candidate for election to the office of bishop and has spent the last three years in mission work in Israel. She has a great heart for Jesus and for the leading of the Holy Spirit.

When Christina returns from her travels to Israel and the United Arab Emirates where she is closing out her mission work, she will meet with Michael and our staff to begin looking ahead and be brought on board concerning the ministry setting here in Clinton.

There will be opportunities to officially greet and welcome Pastor Christina when she arrives. One of the best things you can do now is to pray for safe travels and for an open heart to all that the Holy Spirit wants to accomplish through Pastor Christina in our congregation.

21

Our church has opened to the entire congregation the “Netflix” for Bible study!

We have created channels for you to try including, parenting/families, kids, youth, Sunday series, faith in action, just to name a few. There are videos for studies, for personal devotions and for family devotions with children of different ages. This is a FREE resource and purchases are not necessary.

We have been using RightNow for a number of years for adult studies and small group gatherings and a lot with our youth. Now we are able to open to the whole congregation.

As we continue to develop our communications policyPlease note:

Mirror is limited to 24 pages. Community events are limited to one page and are on a first come first serve basis and only if we have room.

Bulletin insert is limited to 1 page front and back. NO community events will be printed in the bulletin inserts as we reserve that limited space for church events only.

If you want a community event announced before church please contact Pastor Bobb or Michael a few days ahead of time so we may start our services on time.

Thank you for your understanding!
