Small business owners are busy, fact. Whether you’re a team of one or twenty you’re busy with day to day tasks putting your customers at the top of the list. If you ask any business owner growing their business and improving their image is important to them, but where do you find the time? Where do you start? I sat down with Jay Velikovsky of Graphic FX to come up with 5 key elements of branding that are often over looked by small business.

1. The sign that hangs above your front door

If it’s backlit with florescent tubes it looks like it’s from the 80’s, you would let your house look like this so why would you let your business. L.E.D accent lighting and some raised lettering will get you up to date and provide you with the image you want your customers to see, modern and cutting edge.

2. Business cards

These get dated faster than your sign did, if you haven’t re-designed your cards in the last three years make it a priority. Your business is often your first impression with a potential customer, it’s a reflection of you and your business, so get a great card designed, on good heavy stock, and hand it out with confidence.

3. Your Vehicle

Personal or company any vehicle is a moving billboard and for a lot of small businesses with tight budgets a vehicle wrap provides some of the best branding value out there. If you run a mobile business this is especially important, like your business card this can be the first impression a customer has of your business, so make it a good one!

4. Your showroom

Whether it’s a trade show, your office, or a retail space, it’s the place you interact with your customers and it should reflect the quality of the product you’re offering them. Stop buying those ready-made “special tags” and throw away all the cheezy free signage you got from your vendors and start doing it right. Have your sale tags highlighted with your logo and website or Facebook page, have your vendors send you some images that you can have printed and personalized. You’ll be amazed at the difference and you customers will have the confidence of a structured and organized chain, with the warm personal service of a local business.

5. Consistency

Your branding should be consistent, everything from your sign to your marketing material should have the same look and feel, the best way to do this is to find a designer you trust and stick with them. When I met with Jay we talked extensively about the complete solution, he’s grown his staff to 18 members not only to be able to offer everything we’ve mentioned above but to get the job done in a timely fashion. Graphic FX recently completed a ground up project with Westcore Training Center handling everything from the front window to the back office, Mayor Dean Fortin even commented on how Vibrant the upper Johnson area now looks.
