WHAT IS SKIN ANYWAYS?

The skin is actually one of the body’s organs, much like your liver, kidneys, or heart. It is very important and you are right to want it as healthy as it can be. Perhaps the best way to start you off on the journey towards healthier skin will be with a better understanding of what your skin is all about. After all, it is the largest organ in the body.

So...what constitutes your skin?

The skin is made up of three layers:

§ The epidermis is the outermost skin layer and is the part of the skin that we see. It is continuously making new cells and also has melanin which gives the skin its color and protects you from harmful UV rays from the sun.

§ The layer underneath the epidermis is called dermis and you cannot see it. It contains blood vessels, nerve endings, sweat glands, and oil glands. The nerve endings help you feel and make you know if things are cold or hot

when you touch them. The blood vessels bring in oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and remove toxic waste. Sweat glands release sweat when it is hot to cool you down.

§ The subcutaneous (also called the hypodermis) layer forms the bottom layer and is mostly made of fats that help your body stay warm. The hairs on your body start at this layer, and it is the sebaceous gland that gives your hair some shine.

Now that you have some technical information about the make up of your skin, let’s go back to the basics. Healthy skin is what we all want to have because it looks great and feels so nice. It is natural for us to want to look our best, and in this e-book, we are going to give you five simple tips to help you foster healthier skin.

How beautiful and healthy your skin looks will always be a reflection of the work, care and attention you give yourself. Be ready to wow and turn heads with radiant skin and in that same process, boost your self esteem and general wellness.

Here are five tips you can use to cultivate healthier skin:

TIP NO. 1: Keep Your Skin CleanThis is the simplest way to take care of your skin. Clean skin is happy, healthy skin. When you wash your skin you remove dirt, germs, and bacteria before they have a chance to multiply and cause problems.

When bathing, wash your skin with warm (not HOT) water, and use beauty products to enhance your routine. Always use soap that is mild and gentle on your skin. If you switch to a new brand of soap or body wash, it is a good idea to test it out on a small portion of your skin first to see whether you have any adverse reaction to the product.

To improve your skin’s health, add skin brushing to your bathing routine. Brushing your skin acts as a form of exfoliation, which helps remove deep rooted dirt and dead skin cells and reveals cleaner and smoother feeling skin.

Brushing your skin while bathing can improve blood circulation. Using soft circular motions, brush your entire body paying extra attention and using caution around your face and other sensitive parts of your body.

The feeling of thousands of soft bristles running all over your skin is great, especially when you are immersed in a cozy bubbly bath. It can get addictive, which is good, because it will feel like a spa moment in your bathroom.

Dry brushing your skin before taking a bath or shower can also be beneficial for your health. Your lymphatic system will benefit every time you dry brush because most of your lymph vessels lie just beneath the skin. As you dry brush, you not only stimulate these vessels, but also unclog your skin pores and enable your skin to breathe!

TIP NO. 2: Eat a Healthy DietYou are what you eat, so it has been said, and the truth of this has been scientifically proven. Glowing, healthy skin starts with nourishment from within. Knowing that the skin is continuously shedding old cells and creating new ones, it is important that you eat a nutritionally balanced diet to feed your skin what it needs to stay healthy, soft, and blemish-free.

Our health is always under threat from all the pollution around us. We may have little control over this situation, but we have the ability to work towards ensuring that we protect our health and skin from the damage caused by toxins that get into our body.

Detoxifying yourself is something that you can achieve by including fruits and vegetables in your diet. They have antioxidants that protect your skin from the cellular damage caused by the effects of free radicals from pollutants.

Aim to have at least five portions of fruits and vegetables a day. Ideally, vegetables and fruits should constitute half of your plate, while one quarter should be grains and the other quarter should be proteins. It is a good choice to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables for wider benefits.

Dark green vegetables provide different nutrients from the red and orange colored ones. Whole fruits are a better choice compared to fruit juices since they have fewer calories, no added sugar, and contain more fiber. Choose whole grains instead of the processed meals since they contain fiber that will keep you feeling fuller for longer. They are also more nutritious.

Proteins help the body build and maintain muscles as well as perform essential tissue repair. So be sure to always include protein in every meal.

TIP NO. 3: ExerciseRegular body exercise leads to healthy skin. Physical activity increases your blood circulation, which means all your organs, skin included, remain well oxygenated, receive beneficial nutrients and get cleared of wastes. Increased blood flow actually flushes out debris in your skin on a cellular level, thereby cleansing it from the inside.

When you work out, your body is encouraged to maintain a healthy level of cortisol, which is a hormone associated with stress. High levels of cortisol cause the breakdown of collagen which keeps your skin firm. This breakdown often leads to acne breakouts, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Exercising also boosts the production of collagen.

While you are working out, either jogging outside your house or swimming at the beach, do not expose your skin to the harmful rays from the sun. Use a sunscreen that will protect your skin from sunburn, wrinkles, and premature aging. Choose a good sunscreen and ensure it has a safe chemical composition. Sunscreens made from minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxides are normally safe.

A thorough body exercise should work out a good sweat on you. When done with your exercise, nothing could be better and healthier for your skin than a gentle bath. Throw in the Rengöra bath brush into that mix and the treat will be complete! Gently brush your skin in circular motions from your feet upwards towards your heart. You will be amazed at how this will leave you feeling.

TIP NO. 4: Maintain HydrationWater is life. The value of water in our bodies goes down to the cellular level. It doesn’t matter what you are aiming for – a healthier body, a shinier and fuller head of hair, or younger, softer, radiant and more glamorous skin. Pure, clear, clean water is Mother Nature’s answer to all that.

Drinking water regularly keeps your whole body hydrated, which is essential to every part of your body and even more so for your skin. More than half our body is water, and it is critical for the proper functioning of all your organs.

When you take up a healthy routine of drinking plain and clean water, you give your body exactly what it needs to deliver key nutrients to all cells and flush out toxins from the body. The skin (being an organ) has cells that are principally made up of water. When that water is depleted, the skin tends to dry out, flake, wrinkle, and become more prone to infections.

Drink water religiously and don’t worry about what has been or hasn’t been proven scientifically because the bottom line is: water is good for you, and it will definitely be good for the health of your skin.

TIP NO. 5: Adopt a Skin Friendly LifestyleThere are some lifestyle habits that are just bad for your skin, and if what you want is healthier skin, you will do yourself a whole load of good by just staying clear of these. Smoking tops that list of habits, and it will not only damage your skin, but also make you age faster! Now who needs that? Excessive alcohol, too much caffeine, a lot of sun bathing and that habit of popping zits are some of the other habits that are not good for the skin.

On the bright side, here is what you can adopt to promote healthy skin that will stay with you for a long time;

• Give yourself enough sleep, at least 7-8 hours a day. It is really good for your skin.

• Don’t sleep with your make up on, if anything, take a good bath before going to bed.

• After cleansing your skin remember to moisturize. Use mild lotions that contain natural ingredients.

• Take some time to meditate in the quietness of your home; get in touch with your inner self.

• Avoid stressful situations or circumstances that will stress you. They say life is short, so it’s better to spend it happy.

• Learn to enjoy life and appreciate anything and everything that you have. It is the little things in life that really make the difference once we start to appreciate them.

So... what should you take from this book?

You can foster healthier skin for yourself and teach those you love to do the same. It takes some effort but if you have the basics down like what these five tips propose, you will be surprised at how easy it is to improve the look and feel of your skin.

Practice these tips daily and before long, you will begin to see just how beautiful and healthy your skin can be and indeed your whole self. Why not start today?
