THE 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY
AT UBC
STEPHANIE, JOSH, AMRIT
LOCATION
The Nest
This is the student union building, and a
center of activity on UBC campus.
It is located at 6138 Student Union
Boulevard, and is a short 5 minute walk
from the central bus loop.
If you are unable to find the building,
don’t hesitate to ask someone on
campus, because almost all students are
aware of its location.
PLACE UBC campus is unique as there is a mix of old and new
buildings and architecture. Travelling through the
campus you can see buildings representative of mid
20th century architecture as well as recent constructions,
illustrating a more international approach that the
University has taken in the 21st century. Constant
throughout this period of time has been the influence of
the Northwest Coast Peoples.
HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS
Although the university may appear to be an artificial
environment, in recent years it has taken a number of
initiatives to make the campus more sustainable. One
example of this is the UBC Farm, which is a center for
sustainable food systems.
MOVEMENT
At UBC information and ideas move almost
as rapidly as the students moving to and
from buildings. There is a transfer of ideas
from professors to students, as well as from
student to student. The scholarly ideas are
then dispersed from UBC to the rest of the
world.
UBC has a series of thoroughfares like west,
east, and main malls, that make it easy to
navigate the campus. UBC also hosts
students and scholars from countries around
the world.
REGIONS UBC CAMPUS IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR REGIONS:
1) WESTBROOK MALL- MANY BUILDINGS, RESTAURANTS, AND VARIOUS OTHER SERVICES.
THIS IS THE MOST DENSELY POPULATED PART OF CAMPUS AND WHERE STUDENTS SPEND
THE BULK OF THEIR TIME.
2) SOUTH WESTBROOK: RECENTLY DEVELOPED PRIMARILY RESIDENTIAL AREA WITH MANY
CONDOMINIUMS, RESTAURANTS AND OTHER SERVICES.
REGIONS CONTINUED • 3) PACIFIC SPIRIT PARK: BORDERS SOUTH WESTBROOK TO THE EAST AND NORTH. IT IS THE
LARGEST REGION AND IS MADE UP OF A VARIETY OF HIKING AND MOUNTAIN TRAILS.
• 4) MARINE DRIVE: THE MOST WESTERLY POINT OF THE CAMPUS. IT INCLUDES SUCH
ATTRACTIONS AS THE MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE BOTANICAL AND NITOBE
GARDENS.
