    5 Phases of Growth :

    1. Growth through Innovation:

Akio Morita was born into a wealthy family which regularly bought all the latest electricgadgets. His fathers purchase of an electric phonograph triggered his interest in electrical

things. So intense became this interest that it interfered with his academic studies, and he came

close to flunking out of school.

Morita was at Osaka University during World War II, passing out to become a navy technicalofficer. In the navy, he met Masaru Ibuka.Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded a company

called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K., the company built Japan's first tape recordercalled the Type-G. While most American companies were researching the transistor for its military applications,Ibuka and Morita looked to apply it to communications.

Later released the Sony TR-55, Japan's first commercially producedtransistor radio. They

followed up in December of the same year by releasing the Sony TR-72, a product that won

favor both within Japan and in export markets, including Canada, Australia, the Netherlands andGermany.

The company also later released the TR-6, which featured an innovative slim design and sound

quality capable of rivaling portable tube radios.

Similarly the growth steadily raised through innovation, with the centralized structure washeaded by Masaru Ibukaand Akio Morita.

    2. Growth through Direction:

With the increase in the business and the demand of the products there was a need for specific

    functional departments to be developed:

    1

    )

    Service Department

After the spread of all-wave receivers in society and introduction of household appliances and

televisions, service departments ought to place more importance on both the quality and

    frequency of their services.

With this in mind, our company plans to provide the best service by utilizing both its

technological skills and measuring instruments. The use of compact service cars is an

    example of such a service.

For rural areas, since the number of high quality products are still small, it was planned toservice the products on a specific date by making arrangements with a specified radio shop.

Orders for repair work are increasing as there are many people who were affected by the war

and because of a lack of trustworthy radio shops.

    2). Measuring Instrument Department

Compared to the number of radio manufacturers, there are only a few companies that make

measuring instruments needed to produce and repair radios. The number was even smaller for

radio dealers that are capable of repairing products with these instruments. Although radio

receivers which are commonly used by the public can be fixed by non-scientific methods, itwill not be possible to do so in the future as equipment becomes more complex, and as people

begin to use high quality receivers and all-wave receivers.

    3). Communication Equipment Department

This department helped the company to grow in the future by performing research and

    development of special communications equipment.

    a) Time Split Multiplex Method

    b

    )

    Simple Multiplex Telephone

    c) Recordable Letter Communication Device

d Program Selection and Reception Method

    3. Growth through Delegation:

Sony being such a huge giant where it certainly difficulties were faced but decentralization was

the path chosed by the company only in certain areas. In which one was the supply chain area

    where the company

By pursuing a supply-chain segmentation strategy and aggressive change, Sony BPE reduced theinventory to sales ratio by 90% through an 80% increase in sales and an 80% reduction in

    inventory.

The concepts of supply-chain segmentation and value density have been documented anddiscussed for many years. However, they are often overlooked in supply-chain design projects,

whereas they should often be regularly monitored and reviewed.

    4. Growth through Collaboration:

Collaboration is a core part of being "Sony United," which is our internal slogan for a variety of

measures aimed at "uniting" Sony, including promoting teamwork, cooperation and the marriage

    of key resources.

Sony has developed a Software Forum, where its strategic priority is to strengthen software-

oriented product development, and to enable this objective, corporate headquarters hosted a

forum bringing together front-end software engineers, hardware engineers, and management.

The Forum's purpose was to provide an cross-border and cross-business setting to freely share

engineering activities, achievements, challenges, and opportunities.

The forum included a keynote presentation, workshop session, and panel discussion. The 750

participants engaged in a proactive dialogue on how to improve software development activities,

particularly on sharing and leveraging internal resources.

Sony will continue the Software Forum on a regular basis to improve software developmentproductivity, innovation, and strategic alignment with the business needs.
