Dear Colleagues,

With demand for management talent outstripping supply, companies are getting the shorter end of the stick when they align pay policies with market practices in order to retain high performers in talent-scarce China. According to analysts, China’s wages are set to increase by 10 percent or more in 2015.

Market pressure in China has made many companies raise salaries regardless of whether it leads to increased performance levels or higher return on investment. Although this helps to attract the right talent, it does not necessarily retain them as employees regard such increments as the norm. The message to employers in China is clear: larger paychecks won’t stop your talents from leaving. It merely results in a rising wage bill and without a corresponding return on investment, it is definitely unsustainable in the long term.

Thus, it is critical for HR professionals to re-evaluate their Compensation & Benefits structures to ensure that they engage key talent and more importantly, retain them whilst controlling costs at the same time. This will allow organizations to accelerate growth and gain a competitive advantage in the industry.

This March in Shanghai, Clariden Global brings together the wide range of challenging Comp & Ben issues at the China Compensation & Benefits Conference. Join us for a gathering with global and local HR gurus and practitioners from multinational, Chinese state-owned and private companies. Meet industry leaders who will present case studies, research and showcase the latest Comp & Ben best practices. You will discover, engage and experience everything there is to know about Compensation analytics, Total Rewards and EVP, Flexible Benefits, Expatriate Compensation, International Mobility and Pay for Performance.

Designing an Effective Total Rewards System that Increases Talent Retention & Workforce Performance

Workshop Outline

Across all sectors and regions, organizations are struggling to re-build profitability following the economic slowdown. With revenue growth hard to come by, they are focusing on cost containment and performance improvement as the paths to profit growth. In particular, with the talent crunch in China, organizations are very concerned about retention and motivation, particularly for top performers, high potentials and those with scarce skills. However, the option of paying more for retention or performance is often no longer available and companies are focusing more on intangible rewards such as motivational leadership, challenging work and career development to boost engagement. The challenges ahead are how to develop and deliver reward programs that are cost effective and drive performance improvement.

This comprehensive and highly interactive executive program “Developing an Effective Total Rewards System” is specifically tailored to meet the needs of Directors and Senior Managers who are seeking to deploy total rewards to better leverage the performance of their workforce as well as to retain talent and manage people with excellence. Through this one-day program, you will learn to optimize your current rewards process in order to better engage and retain talents in your company. You will also learn the common pitfalls and mistakes made by organizations in aligning their rewards programs to their business strategy. This program will also empower you with skills for the diagnosis and design of effective rewards programs which lead to organizational change and improve people effectiveness. Throughout the program, you will be challenged to experiment with new approaches in applied learning sessions, receive constructive feedback and insights from our workshop leader and fellow participants and leave with specification plans for deploying an effective Total Rewards System in your workplace.

Tom Farmer is an American total rewards professional with 30 years of experience in compensation and benefits, including 15 years in corporate management roles and 10 years in consulting. Prior to starting his independent consulting firm, Freelance Total Rewards Pte Ltd in January 2013, Tom was Principal and Asia Pacific Leader for Mercer’s Global Mobility practice. He first came to Asia in 2007 with his family with InterContinental Hotels Group as VP Compensation & Benefits for the Asia Pacific region, after holding the same role for the Americas region.

Tom’s consulting clients include The Coca-Cola Company, General Electric, Auburn University, CapitalOne Financial, Synovus Corporation, Verizon Wireless, The Home Depot, Kraft Foods/Mondelez, Darden Restaurants, Yum!
