    H.V. CABLE GLANDS FOR 13.8kV & 33kV SWITCH GEAR:

    1. SCOPE:This specification covers the requirements of SCECO, Central Region, of the manufacture and

    supply of H.V. cable Glands for 13.8kV & 33kV switchgear and transformers.

    These cable glands can he insulated or uninsulated.

    2. DESIGN:

    2..1 The purpose of the cable gland is to provide an adequate, corrosion resistant earth bond for the

    metallic cable armours together with means of sealing the cable sheath terminations.

    2.2 These cable glands are designed to accommodate 3-phase HV XLPE cables specified in SCECO,Central Region, specifications Nos. 5/2 and 5/3 (Latest Editions)

    2.4 The cable glands are designed to allow enough space inside the switchgear cable box to allow

    cross core connection and ease interchange of phase. Details are shown in drawing No.

    SC/P/665/48.

    2.5 Contact between armour and gland is ensured by two worm drive clips. This contact should be

    designed to withstand 21kA for 1 second for 13.8kV network and 25kA for 1 second for 33kV

    network.

    2.6 A stud (M10) is welded on the cable gland to connect an earthing cable. Adequate nut and

    washer are provided.

    2.7 The cable glands should be made of galvanised steel to prevent corrosion.

    3. INSULATED CABLE GLANDS:

    3.1 Where insulated cable glands are used; the glands are insulated from the metalwork of the

    switchgear by a square insulating insert.

    The fitting must be secured by 4 insulated nuts, bolts and washers or by ordinary nuts, bolts and

    washers in conjunction with insulating devices. Details are shown in drawing No.

    SC/P/665/51.

    3.2 In this case all insulated accessories (insert, nuts and bolts) must be designed to withstand a

    power frequency test voltage of 10kV for 3 sec.

    3.3 The thickness of the insulating insert must be not less than 9 mm.4. COVERING SLEEVE

    Connection between armour, gland and conductor will be covered with a heat shrinkable

    internally coated sleeve which seals the gland to the cable sheath as shown on SCECO, Central

    Region, drawing No. SC/P/665/50 and in accordance with general specification No.5/12 -"Heat

    Shrinkable Cable Terminations and Joints" (latest edition).

    5. FORM OF SUPPLY:

    The cable glands should be supplied in the form of 4 different kits as given below:

    Type 1: Non-insulated Cable Gland 3x240, 3x300 or 3x185 mm2 cable including:

    1- Gland, type A.

    2- Worm drive clips.
