- 2 - St John the Evangelist, Leonia NJ DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

How should we prepare for this great Feast of Mercy? Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when “all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened.” (Diary 699) Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast of His Mercy, now called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic Church. Jesus promised that “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Commun-ion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and pun-ishment.” (Diary 699) He went on to say “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mer-cy.” (Diary 1109) We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence on this great Feast of Mercy “Divine Mercy Sunday”. We want you to benefit fully from these promises, and we also want you to notify all of your family and friends about them too and urge them to return to the practice of their faith! It is required of all Catholics to con-fess their sins at least once every year. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet this obligation, then take ad-vantage of this wonderful opportunity to receive an out-pouring of an ocean of graces that Jesus promises. Those who have already confessed sins for Easter could make room for others. It is allowed for one to go to Confession up to about 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday.

CROSSES We complain about the cross we bear, but don't realize it is preparing us for the dip in the road that God can see and we cannot. Whatever your cross, whatever your pain, there will always be sunshine, after the rain… Perhaps you may stumble, perhaps even fall; But God's always ready, to answer your call.... He knows every heartache, sees every tear, a word from His lips, can calm every fear... Your sorrows may linger, throughout the night, But suddenly vanish, by dawn's early light... The Savior is waiting, somewhere above, to give you His grace, and send you His love. May God fill your day with blessings!! Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle!

SMILE

A smile’s a gift you give yourself by giving it away, because it comes right back to you in a warm and friendly way. A smile can speak a thousand words wherever you may be, in simple unas-

suming ways that anyone can see. A smile shows you understand when hearts are filled with pain, for it sheds a little sunshine where there was only rain. A smile spins a cheerful web that binds us one and all with thread of hu-man kindness wherever it may fall. A smile’s a rose that when returned becomes a Spring bouquet. A smile’s a gift you give yourself by giving it away.

Sunny dispositions make even the darkest skies shine.

EASTER PEOPLE We are Easter people and Alleluia is our song!

—St. Augustine

CLOTHING BINS “In your Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it” are some of the lyrics to a very popular song which reflects the joys of the Easter season.

Some people, however, have difficulty experiencing these joys due to their circumstances in life. Catholic Charities aims to help relieve the suffering of many in our society through its various programs. Please help Catholic Charities continue its mission by donating your unwanted clothing to the bin located on our property. May the spirit of the Risen Christ resound through your generosity. Thank you.

SUPPORT THOSE WHO SUPPORT US It is through the generosity of our advertisers that we are able to place this bulletin into your hands without cost to the Parish. Why not get into the habit of looking through the ads and give these neighbors/merchants a chance to serve your needs. Tell them you read about them in the St. John’s bulletin.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It has been said that the most convincing sign of the Ris-en Christ is the Risen Christian. Today, in parishes around the world, new life is drawn from the waters of baptism, and new Christians are thrilled to see the crowds pour in to join in the feast. On Easter, we do not say the Creed, but rather renew our baptismal promises with hearty responses. We are taking the first joyful steps on a fifty-day-long celebration. In the southern hemisphere, the world is slipping into winter, but for us in North America, the earth itself seems to sing hymns to Christ’s victory. Look this morning for the fresh paschal candle standing near the baptismal waters. It was consecrated in the hours of the night, will burn brightly for fifty days whenev-er we gather for prayer, and will glow again at every bap-tism and every funeral in the year ahead. Even though we may be gathered around the candle someday in sadness, today’s joy at Christ’s victory over death will shine through. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FEAST OF FAITH The Eucharist: Food for Resurrection

How do we celebrate Easter, the greatest of our Christian feasts? By doing what we do every Sunday and every day: celebrating the Mass. On the first Easter, as the heartbroken disciples walked the road to Emmaus, the Lord was with them but they did not realize it. They only recognized him “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 22:35). It is the same for us. In the Mass—the breaking of the bread—we meet the risen Lord together. We meet him in each other—for by our baptism into his death and resur-rection, we have become members of one body, the Body of Christ. We meet him in his word—in the liturgy the scriptures are proclaimed to us, that they might take root and grow in us. And we meet him in a special way in the Eucharist, the sacrament of his Body and Blood, which is food for resurrection: “whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:51). The Lord is risen indeed, and it is the Risen One who truly presides at this and every Eucharist. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE EASTER OCTAVE Sunday, April 4 - Sunday, April 11, 2021

Eastertime lasts fifty days: seven weeks of seven days (seven equals Biblical perfection) plus one day: perfection plus! Like an eight-day Jewish wedding, or a child who can’t bear to let go of Christmas, birthdays, and school vacation, the Church celebrates the Easter Octave: “the marriage of heaven and earth,” as the Vigil calls Jesus’ resurrection; our new members’ baptismal re-birth; our renewal of baptismal vows; our hearts’ “divine vaca-tion” (Latin vacare, “to be empty”), newfound time and space for love of God and neighbor. Make home an Easter garden! Adorn the dining table with a pillar candle (your “paschal candle”), a bowl full of water (ideally, from the parish’s baptismal font), a vase of flowers or bowl of sprouting grain with Easter eggs. Even non-singers can handle the three-fold Gospel Alleluia! Let that be your grace before meals, perhaps with a prayer recalling Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35): “Be known to us, Risen Lord Jesus, as you were to the first disciples, in your word, in the breaking of bread, and in everyone we meet.”—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

- 3 Easter Sunday Attend Mass weekly, not weakly.

SPIRITUAL EXCERPT WILLINGNESS TO CHANGE

“A woman was dragged by a friend to the monastery one afternoon. I met her and offered her a set of my mini books on the spiritual life. She declined. I said, "Why don't you want to take them with you?" She said, "Because I don't want to change." Boy, I thought, this woman is bad off. We must be constantly willing to change into what the Father wants us to be. What you want is unimportant. After all, what do you know?” Mother Angelica, Little Book of Life Lessons page 41.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS An Acceptance of Suffering: Jesus promised us that suffering would be a normal part of a disciple's life (see Lk. 9:23-24). So, when we mark our bodies with the Sign, we are embracing whatever pain comes as a conse-quence of our faith in Christ. Making the Sign is our taking up the cross and following Him (Lk.9:25). At the same time, however, it comforts us with the realization that Jesus, who endured the Crucifixion for us, now joins us in our suffering and supports us. Signing ourselves also announces another significant truth: with St Paul, we are celebrating that our afflictions as members of the Body of Christ contribute to the Lord's saving work of perfecting the Church in holiness.

EASTER IS MORE THAN SOMETHING TO DYE FOR.
