ABSTRACT•A new wireless technology could beat fiber optics for speed in some applications.

•There’s a new type of wireless transmitter and receiver that can send and receive data at rates of more than one gigabit per second -- fast enough to stream 90 minutes of video from one tower to the next, more than one mile apart, in less than six seconds.

•This kind of point-to-point wireless technology could be used in situations where digging fiber-optic trenches would disrupt an environment, their cost be prohibitive, or the installation process take too long, as in extending communications networks in cities, on battlefields, or after a disaster.

•This technology is different that it exploits a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum however, transmits at 71-76, 81-86, and 92-95 gigahertz frequencies, where these conditions generally do not cause problems.

INTRODUCTIONThe GigaBeam wireless communications solution is a protocol

independent, high-speed, point-to-point and line-of-sight wireless communications link established between two GigaBeam transceiver

units

Wifiber Is Point-to-Point Wireless Microwave Radio.

WiFiber digital millimeter-wave radio is the first product to exploit the recently released 71 - 76 GHz, 81 - 86 GHz and 92 – 95 GHz frequency bands (lowest potential for atmospheric interference).

WiFiber offers true full-duplex Gigabit data rates (1.25 Gbps) in cost effective radio architecture. Transmission distances of over 1 mile can be achieved with carrier-class 99.999% availability under all weather conditions.

A WiFiber radio operates at much higher frequency bands than any other services using much greater spectrum bandwidth. Technical rules allow the full 5 GHz of bandwidth to be used to host both the transmit and receive data.

•GigaBeam links utilize a highly directional millimeter-wave (MMW) antenna and a low-noise amplitude-modulated transceiver. The antennas generate a pencil-like beam less than one degree wide. This narrow beam translates to a small illuminated “footprint” at the receiving antenna location

•This product is light weight (approximately 50 lbs), easy to install, consumes very little power (less than a small light bulb) and can provide link distance of about a mile.

WORKING•This communications links can be established between two buildings or locations by installing a GigaBeam transceiver unit on the rooftop or at one of the windows of each building.

• These two transceiver units are “linked” wirelessly through the alignment of their antennas and their transmission of data via radio signals in the 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz spectrum bands.

•The GigaBeam transceiver unit on each building is also connected via cables and switches to a communications network within its building, such as a local area network used by one of the building’s enterprises or a city, nation or global wide area network with a fiber optic backbone connection in the building.

•As a result, once a GigaBeam link is established between the two buildings, the internal networks in each building are wirelessly connected and communications traffic can be carried from one network to the other.

•By running a network cable directly between two “back-to-back” transceiver units, each of which is then wirelessly linked to a transceiver unit on another building, an operator can also connect more than two locations to form a more extensive network or “virtual fiber” loop, as demonstrated by the following graphic:

2.1 Radio description

•The WiFiber G1.25 radio is a high data rate point-to-point communications device optimized for 1 Gigabit of Ethernet traffic. The radio operates in a dual band FDD format meeting the technical standards of FCC regulations. The radio bands used are 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz

2.2 Millimeter wave subsystem

The system operates Dual Band FDD: one end of the link transmits within the71 GHz band and receives within the 81 GHz band. The other end of the line does the inverse: transmits within the 81 Ghz

band and receives within the 71 GHz band, Figure 2-3.

2.2.1 Transceiver

The transceiver is a multi-functional device that sends and receives data and includes a receiver, transmitter, and synthesizer. This is a GigaBeam custom design.

Receiver. The receiver is a single conversion unit.

Transmitter. The transmitter output results from digital modulation driven into a modulating mixer just prior to the power amplifier.

Synthesizer. The Local Oscillator signal is created in a low-noise, high-stability, phase-locked source and is multiplied to appropriate frequencies.

2.2.2 Modem

The modem is a data interface system that performs two functions: data generation and data recovery. The system operates with industry standard Ethernet at 1.25 Gigabits per second. Forward Error Correction (FEC) is enabled by default and is always active. This is a GigaBeam custom design.

2.2.3 Controller

The controller is a subsystem powered by a microprocessor. The operating system provides powerful software capabilities such as the CLI and the SNMP, which commands the radio to transmit upon receipt of a valid network management input.

The subsystem also monitors vital signals from the radio system and reports status to the network management system. This is a GigaBeam custom design.

2.2.4 Power supply

A power supply converts 48 Volts DC (VDC) to required voltages needed within the radio. An external 120 Volts AC (VAC) rectifier will provide the 48 VDC source.

CONCLUSION

Commercially available equipment can provide fiber-like performance at a fraction of the cost of laying fiber or leasing capacity.

Equipment is commercially available with full-duplex data rates in excess of 1 Gbps in cost-effective, reliable architectures, with carrier class 99.999% availability at distances of one mile or more. Several other technologies exist to provide gigabit services, but 70/80 GHz wireless is the only solution that offers carrier-class reliability at any significant distance at a cost that can transform backhaul and

access business models.
