Powitalny (Welcome) Dzień dobry (pronounced jehn-doh-brih) or - Hello! It’s time to join the IVAS Congress “Destination Poland!” September 12-15, 2019 (Thursday-Sunday) at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. We celebrate 45 years of IVAS Congresses, and the mission of providing, promoting and supporting veterinary acupuncture. By hosting the IVAS Congress at the Veterinary University in Wrocław, we will increase awareness of veterinary acupuncture in Poland and throughout Europe.

The Program Committee has done a great job of putting together a very dynamic speaker line up this year. Inside you will find the Congress schedule, presenters, topics and the wet lab selection to choose from. This year we are offering both morning and afternoon wet labs at the University so that you can choose to attend more than one!

We are very excited about the Keynote Presenter, Daniel Keown, MCEM, MBChB, LicAC Author of “The Spark in The Machine” and his new book “The Uncharted Body: A New Textbook of Medicine.” Dr. Daniel Keown is one of the worlds premium experts on acupuncture and health. Dr. Keown is incredibly passionate about the power of acupuncture to get people healthy and keep them healthy and is only one of a few doctors in the world who are dual qualified in Eastern and Western medicine.

As a reminder there is no host hotel for Congress, so you are free to choose a hotel that fits your style. Accommodations in Wrocław range from high end to budget friendly. We have some recommendations on the IVAS Congress page, or you can go to many of the online hotel booking sites to find a hotel. The University is located at Norwida 25, 50-375 Wrocław, Poland. The part of the campus where the Congress will be is across the river from old town and most of the hotels are about 1.2 miles from the Congress venue.

Getting around Wrocław is easy. You can walk to the Congress venue in about 15 minutes if you are up for it, take public transport or grab an Uber. Yes, Uber operates in Wrocław, so it is easy to get from your hotel or air B&B to the University.

Polish is a hard language to learn; however, if you want to learn a little before going it will be much appreciated by the locals. There are tons of smart phone apps out there that can help you learn the basics. September is a great time to visit and is the start of Fall with warm days and slightly cooler evenings. The currency is the złoty pronounced in Polish (ZWO-tih) and in English (ZLo-tee) the exchange rate is very favorable and a great value to eat, stay and see the sites. Poland has a rich history and there is so much to see and do in Wrocław, we know you will enjoy your time in this charming city. Polish food is hearty and tasty but also inexpensive. When you see a “Bar” sign in Poland, it doesn’t mean alcohol – it means cheap grub. Eating at a bar mleczy (pronounced bar Mlech-neh) it is a milk bar and it is an essential experience to eat at one. These cafeterias you will see all over the country of Poland and are a great way to get a good cheap meal. Poland is also famous for Polish Vodka so you can find a “Bar” of that kind as well.

Don’t forget about the Post Congress Fun! Inside you will find the details of our plans to leave the city of Wrocław and travel to Kraków. Because we are changing locations this year you will need to sign up and book your travel to Kraków in advance. If you are interested in joining the Post Congress Fun group, read inside and get your name on the list to receive all the details of how to book travel and the tours.

I look forward to seeing you at Congress and Na zdrowie! (pronounced nah-zdroh-vyeh) or - Cheers!

Wet Lab Descriptions

Katja Görts (Small Animal Only) – “Hirudotherapy and Acupuncture”

Description – Familiarize the attendees with the biology, therapeutic effects and scientific evidence of medicinal leeches in general and in combination with acupuncture. Provide practical guidelines including how to handle the leeches, locate the best site and how long they might stay attached and examples for the use of hirudotherapy and hirudopuncture in this small animal wet lab.

Today hirudotherapy gains more and more relevance in the treatment of lymphatic and venous insufficiencies, dentistry and pain control, e.g. in active osteoarthritis. The saliva of medicinal leeches contains at least 30 single substances that are not fully described and identified regarding their structure and pharmacological effects. The therapeutic effect is based predominantly on a combination of blood thinning, antithrombotic, analgetic, antiphlogistic, and local anesthetic effects.

University Morning Wet Labs 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Francesco Longo (Equine Only) – “Myofascial Trains and Energetic Meridians in the Sports Horse: The Original Integrity of the Movement”

The integration between fascial therapy and acupuncture and Tui na therapy implements the medical act in the horse physical and sport medicine.

In the diagnostic phase, the similarities between fascial restriction and the finding of acupoints sensitive to palpation exam will be highlighted. In the therapeutic phase, the manual stimulation of specific acupoints through Tui na (Chinese Massage) techniques and Myofascial Massage techniques will be demonstrated.

Uwe Petermann (Equine and Small Animal) – “Gold Bead Implantation in Ear Acupuncture Points for Treatment of Musculoskeletal Disease”

Description – This wet lab he will be demonstrating in the horse and dog, all ear points for joints and vertebra. The use of RAC will be used. (NOGIER PULSE REFLEX to figure out the affected joints and vertebra blockages) Demonstrations of how to carry out lameness diagnostic by RAC controlled ear acupuncture. Laser Treatment of the ear acupuncture points to reduced pain and inflammation in the corresponding joints. In addition, a demonstration of the use of semi-permanent needles in ear acupuncture, how to produce the ear acupuncture gold implants and how to insert the implants into the ear acupuncture points.

Are Thoresen (Equine and Small Animal) – “7 and 12-Element Anthroposophical Acupuncture Vs Classical TCM 5-Element Acupuncture, Especially for the Treatment of Cancer”

Description – This wet lab will be for both equine and small animals. Attendees will learn the “Genuine” command points and use pulse diagnosis in the horse and dog. You will learn how to use the 12-Element system instead of the 5-element system to avoid translocation of the disease as well as how to use your mind in diagnosis and treatment. The best times to visit Wrocław for ideal weather are May 7th to September 30th based on average temperature and humidity from NOAA. Wrocław is warmer than much of Poland. It has a mild summer (Jun–Aug) and a cold winter (Dec–Feb).

September signals the official start of the beautiful autumn season in Poland, with pleasant temperatures and falling rainfall amounts. The area sees an average daily temperature of 14°C (about 57°F), a fantastic temperature for getting out and exploring.

We can expect 20°C (68°F) daytime temperatures in the shade with on average 5 hours of sunshine per day and an average night-time temperature of a cool 9°C (48°F).

Post Congress FunWith the help of our new President-Elect, Dee Craig, IVAS has planned the Post Congress Fun. Join IVAS as we move from Wroclaw to one of Poland’s best destination cities, Kraków. This beautiful, old fashion city buzzing with history seems to be made for strolling!

Kraków (pronounced KROCK-oof), also correctly pronounced as KRACK-cow is compact, flat and easy to navigate, we can walk to just about everything from the main square in about 15 minutes.

As a reminder, IVAS no longer sponsors or pays for Post Congress events. Everyone will be responsible for their own transportation, lodging, tours and meals. To be part of the Post Congress Fun you will need to contact [email protected] to be placed on the list. Those on the list will receive information on how to pay for and book your tours and travel with the

group. Traveling with the group is not required, one can arrange for their own travel from Wroclaw to Kraków.

Post Congress Fun Plans:

Monday, September 16, 2019 - We will be traveling by van from Wroclaw to Kraków. You will need to prepay to be part of the van trip. Cost is approximately 75-95 Euros per person depending on how many we have in our group. Deadline to sign up for and prepay for the transportation to Kraków is July 31, 2019. Once paid for there are no refunds. IMPORTANT NOTE: We will not be able to add anyone to the trip by van after the July 31st deadline. If you wish to join the Post Congress Fun after the deadline - you will need to find your own transportation to Kraków. (Plane, bus or train can get you there) There is also luggage restrictions for the travel by van, so please be honest with your luggage size! There is an extra fee for oversized or extra luggage. Trip may be in several cars, vans, etc. depending on our group size.

We will be picked up by private transportation from the Hilton by Doubletree in Wroclaw at 9:00 am. From there we will travel through the countryside of Poland as we make our way to Kraków and are dropped off at the Hilton Garden Inn Kraków (Konopnickiej). Along the way we will stretch our legs and enjoy the view of Moszna Castle.

Moszna Castle - Primarily it’s a visual adventure, with its ninety-nine turrets and spires, its sharply-angled pink rooves and plethora of variously-styled windows. The sense of upward thrusting space is complemented by breadth of space inside. The castle has 365 rooms composing a total floor-space of 7,000 square meters. It’s set within an extensive park which has no discernible boundary, blending into nearby fields, meadows and forest. The park, with its charming avenues of horse-chestnut, oak, and lime-trees, is a delightful place for a stroll on which to admire the castle’s ever-changing perspectives. Its central section is reconstructed baroque, its eastern wing is neo-Gothic with an adjoining conservatory, while the western is neo-Renaissance, each witnessing different phases of its history from its aristocratic Sixteenth Century beginnings to the turbulent Twentieth.

Monday, September 16, 2019 Evening – Traditional Dinner with folk music at 5:00 pm; the cost will be US$60.00 per person (Includes the tour guide, dinner and tip). There is a tram ride from the hotel to the restaurant and a short walk thru Main Market Square. (Note tram fees are extra.) The cut off date to reserve and pay for your dinner is July 31, 2019. This is optional.

Tuesday, September 17, 2019 – One day trip to Auschwitz and the world famous Wielicka Salt Mine. The tour we have chosen has excellent reviews for the past three years on trip advisor. You will need to book your own tour. The cost is approximately 64 Euros and includes lunch.

We have chosen the Auschwitz and Salt Mine 1-day tour - everyone needs to choose 9/17/2019 pick up time is 7:30 am from the Hilton Garden Inn Krakow Konopnickiej to be included in the same group. We will be back to the hotel between 7-8 pm. Dinner on your own after or we can pick a spot to eat for dinner as a group.

Auschwitz – pronounced OWSH-vits refers to a series of camps in Poland. Why visit a notorious concentration camp? Auschwitz survivors and victims’ families want visitors to come here so that the Holocaust is always remembered - so nothing like this will ever happen again. There are many inspirational and remarkable stories of survival and for many this visit is a life-altering experience. This is a heart rendering experience. An important note when visiting the Memorial and Museum, visitors should behave with the appropriate solemnity and respect and dress in a manner befitting a place

of this nature. It is unlawful in Poland to refer to “Polish Death Camps”; it implies that Poland was responsible rather than the occupying German forces. The museum asks that one thinks carefully before posting on social media negative comments about lines, wait times and facilities as these things are trivial in the context of the horrors experienced by those that arrived unwillingly. Selfies are another cause of hurt and offense.

Wieliczka Salt Mine – pronounced veel-EECH-Kah. This salt mine has been producing salt since at least the 13th century and until a few years ago the mine still produced salt. The Wieliczka miners spent much of their lives underground, leaving before daybreak and returning after sundown, rarely emerging into the daylight. Miners lived and worked underground including the horses used to work the mines these horses spent their whole adult life without ever seeing the light of day. To pass the time, and to immortalize their national pride and religiosity in art, 19th century miners began to carve figures, chandeliers, and eventually an elaborate chapel out of the salt. You will go through vast underground caverns, past subterranean lakes and art. Your jaw will drop as you enter the enormous chapel of St. Kinga, carved over three decades. You can expect a lot of walking! Make sure to bring a jacket or dress accordingly as the temperature is 57 degrees Fahrenheit 443 feet below the ground.

Wednesday, September 18, 2019 – Kraków City Walking Tour – Three hours of walking. Cost per person will be US$15.00. (Includes guide and tip) Deadline to commit is July 31, 2019 as you will have to pay for this upfront. No refunds if you need to cancel. Tour starts at 9:00 am and we should be done around noon. Kraków City Walking Tour – Certified local guides for a breathtaking trip back in time. Walk around the city where each building, statue and corner tells a different story. Learn about the boiling pot of cultures and nationalities which allowed Kraków to become one of the most modern, rich and powerful European cities in its time. The tour gives a unique possibility to understand all the facts, reasons, intrigues and behind the scene plots that molded the great city and its inhabitants, throughout time to the shape in which you can find it today. We will start our visit at the biggest square in Europe called in polish “Rynek Glowny” and the most spectacular buildings located on it. Later, we will follow our Guide on the Polish Kings and walk down to the Wawel Castle. Next step will be the Jewish quarter with its own specific character, as this is probably the most charming place in Kraków. Our guide will answer all our questions and show us all treasures of the Kraków’s Old Town.

Getting Around

Wrocław does have its own airport (Wrocław Nicolaus Copernicus Airport (WRO)) so flying into the city is an option. It’s very economical to fly into Warsaw and from there take a train or bus to Wrocław or any other city in Poland.

It is also quite easy to reach Wrocław from other cities in Central and West Europe. For example: it only takes six hours to get from Prague, Czech Republic to Wrocław by bus.

Getting To

Public TransportWrocław’s public transport system is easy to use and extensive, with 120 bus lines and 23 tram lines. You’ll rarely need trams or buses to get around the Old Town, but many affordable hotels and some sights (like Centennial Hall) are located outside the center. Major hubs for trams and buses include the main train station, Pl. Dominikański, and Pl. Jana Pawła II. Buses and trams run roughly from 04:00 to 24:00, with irregular night buses running after that.

Wrocław’s transport system now runs on a modern ‘Urban Card’ automated system, which has largely replaced the purchase of individual tickets for locals. Tourists, however, should have no trouble using the English option on the ticket machines now stationed at most transit stops and, on all trams, and buses. Note, that while ticket machines at transit stops accept coins and cash, those on board trams and buses only take plastic.

Schedules posted at each stop are fairly accurate. ‘W dni robocze’ means Monday through Friday and ‘w dni wolne’ means Saturday and Sunday. For route planning, visit the website: www.wroclaw.jakdojade.pl

TaxisThe marked taxis in Wroclaw are well regulated, honest, affordable and reliable. But beware of unmarked private taxis near the railway station and certain hotels, which are unreliable and overcharge. Check that your cab is clearly marked, has a rate card in the window and that the driver turns the meter on.

Car RentalAll most travelers need to rent a car in Poland is to be 18 years of age, a credit card (not debit), and a valid foreign driver’s license. Be aware, however, that those from countries that didn’t ratify the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (United States, China, others) cannot legally drive on their home licenses; technically an International Driver’s Permit is required in those cases (in the US these are issued by AAA for a fee). If you don’t have a license in line with the Vienna Convention, or the required IDP, you may be denied the ability to drive a rental car.

Money MattersPolish currency is called the Złoty (zlôdē, zlädē) (meaning, literally, "golden" or "gold one"). Current conversion rate 1 Poland złoty equals 0.26 United States Dollar

Credit cards are quickly becoming the standard in Poland. With that said, it won't hurt to keep a little change in your pocket. Although you'll have no problem paying with plastic at a hotel or a shop, don't be surprised when a cafe or restaurant asks for the paper stuff.Linguistics

Poland’s native language is Polish, one of the Slavic group of languages. English, however, is relatively widely spoken by younger people. Of other European languages German is probably the next most common. Here are few basic words and phrases, with a simplified pronunciation guide. Underlined syllables are emphasized; the letters “zh” imply a pronunciation similar to the “s” in “pleasure”. The letter “r” is always pronounced strongly – almost rolled in a way similar to the Scotish.

There are a whole range of Polish words which look pretty similar to their English equivalents, so signs such as POLICJA, RESTAURACJA, HOTEL and TAXI are hardly going to tax most travellers, but here are a handful of others that may be useful:

Kawiarnia – Cafe Herbaciarnia – Tea House Ksiegarnia – Book Shop Mieso – Butchery Nabial – Dairy products Sklep – Shop Prasa – Newsagent Dworzec – Station Lotnisko – Airport

Since one of the main things you’re likely to be doing while in town is eating, here are a few words you’re likely to encounter on any menu. Smacznego (smat͡ ʂˈnɛ.ɡɔ)! (Enjoy your meal!)

Eating & DrinkingWrocław Milk BarsThe Polish milk bar became a societal institution after WWII when authorities sought to popularize milk-drinking (as opposed to vodka), inspired by Poland’s large surplus of dairy products. Originally, no hot

dishes were served; the milk bar was a place where you went simply to enjoy milk, served in a glass with a straw (so classy). But the proletariat can’t run on milk alone and soon the Party concept had shifted to providing cheap, dairy-based meals to the masses; a worker’s salary often included meals at the local milk bar. In addition to milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese and other dairy concoctions, milk bars offered omelettes and egg cutlets, as well as flour-based foods like pierogi.

The diversity of restaurants in Wrocław is ever improving and the city’s number of international restaurants reflects its status as a thriving urban centre.

Polish food is famous for being simple, hearty and not especially colorful. You simply haven’t had a thorough sampling of it until you’ve tried some of the traditional dishes found in almost any Polish restaurant or milk bar in town. Smacznego!

ExploringOf all the cities in Poland, Wrocław possesses perhaps the most torturous and turbulent history of them all. Known under dozens of different names as it was passed repeatedly between four countries (and the numerous kingdoms that preceded them), Wrocław was one of the most culturally and architecturally diverse cities in Central Europe before being reduced to rubble a mere 65 years ago. As the city proudly and painstakingly rebuilt itself, the post-war period saw a new wave of migrants from today’s western Ukraine enrich not only Wrocław’s ethnic makeup, but also its cultural wealth as many cultural treasures from Lwów were transplanted here. Since shedding the yoke of communism in 1989 and being ‘rediscovered’ by the west, Wrocław has firmly established itself among Prague and Kraków as one of Eastern Europe’s top tourist destinations and one of the undisputed highlights of Poland.

There are three essential areas that visitors shouldn’t miss. The first is the Old Town, with the marvelously restored Market Square at its centre and its maze of cobbled streets, canals, bridges and church spires. While you’re at it, keep your eyes peeled for Wrocław’s adorable and elusive gnomes; there are over 300 of these little rascals running about the city centre

Bound by the Odra River to the north and the Fosa Miejska – or city moat – to the south, this area that was once encircled by the city’s medieval defensive

walls is where you’ll find the bulk of Wrocław’s historical monuments and museums, as well as many beautiful University buildings, soaring churches, and the city’s infamous gnomes. The Old Town also includes the ‘District of Mutual Respect’ – a unique neighborhood southwest of the market square which includes almost side by side the places of worship of four different denominations, including the city’s only surviving Jewish synagogue.

Ostrów Tumski, the ‘Cathedral Island’ is within easy walking distance northeast of the market square and was the first part of Wrocław to be settled by Slavic tribes in the 9th century.

Finally, no visit to Wrocław is complete without a trip east of the Old Town to Centennial Hall. The city’s only UNESCO World Heritage site, this outstanding piece of architecture

turned 100 in 2013 and is surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens, including Wrocław’s Zoo and a spectacular multimedia fountain (which turns into an ice rink in winter).

TouringThere are many options when it comes to touring the city. There’s the “Auschwitz-Birkenau Tour. ”From Wrocław, take a day for a sobering visit to the former Nazi concentration camp complex of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Discovering new foods is a huge part of visiting new places, but finding the best spots is hard. You can wander at random; you can spend days reading reviews; or you can join try the “Delicious Wroclaw Food Tour.” Bike riding, walking, electric cars, there’s a way for everyone to enjoy the beauty of Wrocław.

More to See and DoOne of Wrocław’s most popular, memorable and iconic attractions is not a cathedral, nor a castle or monument, but a legion of little people: Gnomes, or ‘krasnale’ (in local parlance), to be precise. In Wrocław’s city centre these merry munchkins are simply ubiquitous - dotting doorways, alleyways and street corners; constantly underfoot but only seen by the observant. You may well overlook the first few that cross your path, but inevitably – and often literally - you will stumble upon these popular local residents. Keep your eyes peeled and you’re bound to notice the little fellas engaged in a variety of activities about town – from guarding public space to passed-out drunk. Beloved by locals and tourists alike, and the object of more photos than the towering Cathedral, these prolific pranksters have become the unlikely symbol of one of Poland’s most picturesque cities.

Culturally Wrocław has grown into one of the most exciting cities in Poland. This was emphasized when it received the nod as European Capital of Culture 2016, a title which no other Polish city except for Kraków (back in 2000) had previously held. With the new National Forum of Music, an esteemed opera, puppet, pantomime, and song theatre troupes, a clutch of great museums and galleries, and a festival calendar luring more high-profile international acts each year, Wrocław has something to offer everyone. The city’s best contemporary art is on display in Galeria Awangarda, great live music can regularly be heard in Firlej, Eter, and Vertigo music clubs, and the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema is one of the best in Poland.

Cross the picturesque Zwierzyniecki Bridge and you find yourself immediately alongside the cagey enclosure of the Wrocław Zoological Gardens. A product of the city’s dynamic development in the late 19th century, Wrocław’s zoo dates back to 1865 (celebrating 150 years in 2015!) and became the oldest in the country when Poland inherited it after World War II. Suffering severe wartime damage, many of the zoo’s elegant historic buildings were reconstructed and can be found in the southern part of the park; also don’t miss the splendid Soviet-era neon sign at the entrance. Brand-new to the zoo is the impressive African aquarium complex - or ‘Afrykarium’ - three levels of exhibits focussed on the diverse water environments of Africa, including hippos, sharks, manatees, crocodiles, penguins (in Africa? Who knew?), and more. With over 14,000 critters of some 1,100 different species, the zoo is one of Wrocław’s most visited attractions (don’t be surprised by long entry lines on sunny weekends) and also provides foreigners with an opportunity to pick up a few phrases from one of the only Polish-speaking macaws in the world.

There are plenty of indoor activities too! Besides the opera, museums, art galleries and the cinema, you can also find Jump World. Jump World is a multi-trampoline main arena, foam block pit, and zones for playing volleyball, dodgeball, or shooting hoops. Perhaps your more of a speed demon? Check out the 850m go-kart track inside Wrocław’s immaculate football stadium features high-speed corners and sweet straightaways on which you can try to beat the track record.

Take the kids to Humanitarium! It’s all about scientific exploration. Here learning is made fun with an interactive exhibition filled with nifty experiments and workshops catering to age groups from preschoolers to high school students.

Whatever you do, take the time to enjoy yourselves.
