Old Meets New with Visionary Adaptability

A story rich in American history is unpacked at the Mansion Estate of 44 Montvieu Court in Cockeysville, MD nestled in an area once called “Battle Ray” during the Civil War.

The story is one of adaptability and vision as each of its historic owners made modifications and improvements of the day, that somehow still work seamlessly together to make this estatemansion both livable and quite beautiful. Originally a farm and nursery, a farmhouse residence was built in 1850, (now the center section) with a servants receiving room, kitchen, fourbedrooms, a laundry and full bath. There was also an attic and root cellar. Original finishes still in place include German Lap Board wood siding, operable wood shutters, a carved wooddesign repeated on the porch and interior back stair, and wood floors throughout the main house made of long leaf yellow pine of random widths.

The history of ownership reveals both adaptability and vision by a variety of owners. Now designated as the “Hawkins Estate” after it was purchased by Dr. Hawkins in 1869, who’s great-granddaughter Jaqueline Parks, who is still living, and who visited many times, recounting her memories to the current owner. He continued with modifications and upgrades that includedmarble fireplaces. In 1874, Dr. Hawkins added the main house with two stories. It was a modest two story home addition to the left off the original farm house with a center hall running fromthe front of the home to the rear. There were just three rooms on the main level and four rooms with a bath on the second level. He also added wainscot and crown moldings throughoutthe home. Stylistic additions included the arched doorways, Victorian carved balusters on widows walk, a servant’s porch rail, back stair rail and back porch rail in the same design. Theestate was later lost due to back taxes by his daughter Nanny Carter.

In the 1930’s, Mr. Young, a tax collector purchased the property including 187 acres for $18,000.00. His modifications included the debut of a grand two story marble portico with soaringSouthern style columns that replaced the modest front porch on the main house. He took out two fireplaces, and closed off the original French doors from the dining to the now family room.He also removed a wall between two servants’ bedrooms to make a larger bedroom, and removed a door between the other two, and finally, he added an oil burning base board heat.

The residence, much loved through a rich history, has been saved and reinvented through several owners. The current owners, Mr. & Mrs. Strauch purchased it in 1985 and consulted withan Historic Architect named James Wollan from Annapolis, Maryland before making upgrades. Their extensive modifications include enclosing the back porch for a Four Season room witha dedicated heat pump, installing a raised English Garden terrace, a full bathroom addition and renovations to existing bathrooms. In addition to renovating the exterior including porches, the garden, and every interior room, they also added a new furnace and chimney, new AC, 80 gallon water heater, and two 250 gallon oil tanks for heat service. In 1994 a new modern 2-car garage was added with 20’ ceiling. The careful design and height allowed the garage addition to seem natural, as though it was always there.

Now, designated as an Historic Property, this Mansion Estate home boasts ten foot ceilings, large hand blown windows, three fireplaces, eight bedrooms, and five stair cases (three from themain level to the upper level, and two to the basement). Nestled on over three acres of lush lawn and terraced gardens with award winning “champion” trees including a very large arborvitae, this charming estate home, reminiscent of a landscape painting could be yours!
