Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its

Mr. Gaudí

In Barcelona Mr G of course you are everywhere Were you born with this picture of creation This audacity of design and concept Were you struck by lightening or God’s hand Why are they still building for you now in 2014 Is it your brilliance or is it your way Of telling this city to get stuffed We will not forget that they left you to die Under a tram Neither my friend will you.

Pastor’s Post-It

Having just returned from Barcelona I cannot help having Gaudí on my mind, so thus today’s poem. Barcelona is a glorious city noted worldwide for its architecture. No one adorned the city more lavishly and creatively than Antoni Gaudí. Many architects have a signature style that marks their buildings. You can tell at a glance that it is their work. With Gaudí each edifice is utterly unique. The man had a magnificent imagination. It boggles the mind to realize that his creations were from the 1880’s and 90’s and into the earliest years of the 20th century: undulating ceilings, sinuous and anatomical like adornments, chimneys that look like Darth Vader, shards of bright colored tiles on the facades, large lizards spewing water, and wrought iron gates with foreboding dragon sentries. Even our 21st century eyes find them astounding and futuristic.

His last and perhaps greatest work is the Basilica of Sagrada Familia, which he never finished. As the poem notes, he was run over by a trolley in front of it and Barcelona’s star architect laid unrecognized in a hospital bed for days until he died. He never left the plans for his great church. It was all locked in his head. The basilica remained unfinished for decades with only minor tinkering until recently. The efforts to complete it are now in over- drive. The question remains, whether Gaudí would approve of someone else’s ideas for what he might have done? He did largely complete the exterior before he was struck down. It stands in the middle of Barcelona like a gothic cathedral on crack — wildly imaginative, and whimsical and perhaps slightly irreverent.

Gaudí with all of his unorthodox innovations and flights of fancy was a very pious and religious man. He was a particularly devout Catholic and at present his cause for canonization is well underway. He proves that saints can be playful and take a certain license in depicting the mysteries of God. Gaudí’s wild creativity is after all but a gift from a Creator who made giraffes and black holes, rainbows and sunsets, rattle snakes and Tasmanian devils...and us!

Antoni Gaudí, pregueu per nosaltres (Antoni Gaudí pray for us).

Last week at Vacation Bible School we had such a wonderful time of worship, learning, sharing, great music, crafts and games. We spent time with old and new friends from other Christian Churches. It was an amazing experience for all of us! Let us pray…

Dear Lord, We pray in thanksgiving for the beautiful time

that was shared. We pray for the volunteers who made the week so

successful. May they rest and relax for the remainder of the summer. May they sense God’s pleasure and

satisfaction for the work that they did. We pray that what was learned during VPS will make a difference in the lives of all those who participated.

May all of us continue to be enthusiastic about praying, learning and sharing as we were during this

awesome week! Amen.

This weekend our entrance hymn is a favorite of Christians everywhere. How Great Thou Art began as a poem written by a 26 year old Swedish preacher named Carl Gustav Boberg in 1885. The inspiration for the poem came after returning home from an afternoon service and is described by the composer himself: "It was that time of year when everything seemed to be in its richest colouring; the birds were singing in trees and everywhere. It was very warm; a thundercloud appeared on the horizon and soon intense thunder and lightning began. We had to hurry to shelter. But the storm was soon over and the clear sky appeared. "When I came home I opened my window toward the sea, it was still and mirrored the surrounding nature. There evidently had been a funeral and the bells were playing the tune of 'When eternity's clock is calling my saved soul to its Sabbath rest.' It was this series of sights, sounds and experiences that inspired the writing of the 9 stanza poem titled “O Store Gud” which translates to “O Great God”. Boberg published the poem in a religious periodical and was surprised and delighted several years later to hear his poem being sung by a church congregation to the tune of an old Swedish folk song. According to Boberg’s great-nephew, Bud Boberg, “it was used in the “underground

Music Ministry Continued.... church' in Sweden in the late 1800s when the Baptists and Mission Friends were persecuted." In the early 1900s the poem was translated into German by Manfred von Glehn, who entitled it Wie gross bist Du. In 1925, an American, Reverend E. Gustav Johnson, translated the Swedish poem into an English version that is somewhat different than the one popular today. For instance, the first line of Johnson's hymn reads: “Oh mighty God, when I behold the wonder”. In 1927, I.S. Prokanoff translated Glehn's German version into Russian, to be enjoyed by that culture also. Throughout all of these translations, the original Swedish folk tune remained the same. In 1933, English missionaries to the Ukraine, Reverend and Mrs. Stuart K. Hine heard the song for the first time, fell in love with it and sang it often throughout their missionary journeys. As they traveled the Carpathian Mountains, the couple got caught in a thunderstorm, they too were inspired by the incredible beauty and translated the first three verses of the song into English. When WWII broke out in 1939, the Hines returned to England carrying How Great Thou Art to its new home. After the war they wrote the fourth verse and arranged the original Swedish folk tune to be published in English hymnals. Although its origin had roots in Europe, it was not widely known here until it became a popular part of the Billy Graham Crusades of the 1950s where it was performed by gospel singers George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows. According to Dr. Graham, “I like How Great Thou Art because it glorifies God. It turns a Christian’s eyes toward God, rather than upon themselves. “Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to thee; How Great Thou Art, How Great Thou Art!”

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Holy Innocents' American Heritage Girls Troop is forming units for 2017-18. We invite you to gather your daughter and her friends, and join us! AHG gives girls a scouting experience that is not only fun and adventurous, but also based in faith and character-formation. AHG leaders can tailor their groups to their interests, with excellent program support and resources. No experience necessary; just a desire to help girls grow socially and spiritually, in life skills, leadership, and teamwork.

AHG is for girls in kindergarten through high school. Units are based on age, and meet Fridays once a month 6:00-7:30pm, with occasional weekend service projects.

Anyone interested in leading an AHG unit and/or signing up a daughter, please contact Justine at [email protected].

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 13, 2017

First Reading: 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a After fleeing from the revenge of the King of Israel, Elijah hid in a cave, but at the command of God, he went outside and stood on a mountain. There the Lord came to him, not in the wind nor in the earthquake, but in a “tiny whispering sound.” Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5 Paul is deeply pained because the Jews - in spite of everything that has been given to them - have rejected Christ. Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew vividly recounts the event of Jesus walking on the water. When the disciples see this, they are terrified, and Jesus chastises them for their fear. Peter begs Christ to let him walk on the water; he is at first brave but begins to sink and loses faith, crying out, “Lord save me!” Christ rescues him for his faltering faith.

“Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the Lord said, ‘Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord: the Lord will be passing by.’ A strong wind…but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire – but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound…”
