Course Description:

The course serves as an orientation to Hawaii Medical College. Students will be introduced to the expectations of the workplace and of a healthcare professional. Students will also take a personal skills inventory and begin a career plan. Course work includes relevant information about careers, skills, employment, and academic excellence. Career Preparation sets the precedence for how to be a successful student at Hawaii Medical College, as well as how to become a healthcare professional.

Course Objectives: 1. Understand the Holistic Approach to Successful Training2. Understand healthcare workplace expectations3. Articulate the difference between fixed and growth Mindset4. Explore what motivates you to succeed5. Create a time management plan and gain support from home6. Understand the importance of developing professional habits7. Develop a Career Plan including volunteering and externship8. Identify obstacles to success and make a plan to overcome them

Grading: This course is PASS/FAIL. To pass this course students must:

1. Complete majority of assignments by the last day of class (No assignments after the lastday of the module will be accepted resulting in the student not passing the course.)

2. Score 70 percent or above (70% out of 100%) in the following professional areas:• Assignments in on time - no partial points for partial assignments completed• Professionalism – based on Professional Performance Appraisal criteria• Class participation – oral and engagement

Professionalism Points System: Each student starts with 100 points for professionalism each day. Please review the professionalism handout on the Moodle homepage see a more comprehensive list. Points will be deducted in following areas:

a. Homework and class assignments completed(To receive points, ALL assignments must be turned in before the start of class)

b. Lack of participation, focus(Determined by “engagement” with subject matter/discussions)

c. Lack of professionalism(as listed in Student Professionalism Performance Appraisal)

Assignments:

All assignments are listed on the course homepage on http://moodle.hmi.edu/. Ask instructor if you do not understand assignment and/or assignment due date.

Attendance: 1. No absences for the first 4 classes are allowed. An absence during any one of these 4

classes can result in student having to re-start the course.2. An absence due to an unpredictable nature (traffic accident, medical emergency) or

unavoidable situation (medical, legal, military obligation) may be made-up at thediscretion of the instructor. (Note: Documentation detailing the specific cause will be required, “undocumented emergencies” will not be accepted.)

3. Only one excused absence will be allowed during the entire course4. If you are going to be absent let the instructor know in advance

Make-ups: 1. To make up a class, you must notify instructor and make arrangements to sit in the

same class offered2. If no classes are offered, you must arrange to come on-campus for 3 hours and complete

a make-up in the instructors presence.3. Contact instructor to schedule a make-up class and to obtain a make-up packet

Late Arrival / Early Departure: 1. There is a 10-minute grace period at the beginning of class. Any student arriving after

that time will be marked as absent and will have to make-up the class (3 hours)2. Attendance policy states that you can lose points if you are not in class during the

scheduled times3. Any student leaving before the end of class will be marked absent

Instructor Professionalism Expectations: 1. Cooperate and respect others in the community. Please refrain from talking while anyone

is speaking in class or working on assignments.2. Honesty and academic integrity

3. Cell phones are not to be used in class. This includes break time. Please go to the 6th

floor patio to text and/or place calls. You may be asked to surrender your phone atbeginning of class.

4. Students are to be in full dress code (ID, uniform) at all times while on campus, includingmake-up hours, meetings, fundraising events, and certification testing.

5. Follow instructions, pay attention to detail and focus. This means no internet browsing.6. Ask questions – during or after class or by email - if you do not understand7. Create healthcare professional habits!

Facility Rules 1. Absolutely NO food or open beverages may be consumed or stored in classrooms or

labs. Use 6th floor roof top deck. This includes chewing gum, snacks and candy. Watermust have a sealable lid.

2. Smoking is only permitted on 6th floor roof deck in the designated smoking area away frompathway and buildings.

3. Do not loiter outside of classrooms located in office tower before class or during breaks.Classrooms open 15 minutes before class. Please wait on 6th floor patio.

GETTING READY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS….

Here is a list of items you’ll need ahead of time so you can prepare:

I. Admission Documents and Tuition payments

All documents are due at Orientation unless other arrangements have been made, in advance.If you have a down payment with us, it is due prior or on orientation.

II. Course Schedule

You will be given a sequence of classes for your entire program at Orientation. Make sureyou understand the first week class schedule before you leave orientation.

III. Supplies (Recommended):1. Flash Drive - can be purchased at the Facilities Office (6C) for $102. Something to take notes on: loose-leaf paper with folder/binder or composition book.3. Writing utensils: pens and/or pencils.4. Copy paper5. Black Sharpie6. Index cards: 200 3”x3” or 4”x7” - colored/white cards7. Highlighter pens8. O-rings for the index cards

IV. Uniforms - will be issued at Orientation1. Covered flat shoes (no open toe, sandals, slippers, heels)2. A light sweater (HMC logo sweater can be purchased for $30), not hooded sweaters.3. For Pharm Tech’s and Coders: khaki pants. You will be issued two HMC polo

shirts. Additional shirts can be purchased for $26.00.4. Make sure you try uniform on at orientation, so you have the correct size.5. Picture for your Student ID will be taken before or at Orientation. Student IDs

are required to be worn at all times while on campus.

V. e-Books

You will be able to download your e-books during the first day of class. If you want topurchase a hard copy textbook instead, please notify your Advisor in advance. Note that hard copies are more expensive than ebooks and will increase your monthly payments.
