    MAKE ME CAR FREE!

Shopping bags Ho do you get your shopping home?

    FACTS

Plastic bags are made from oil which is a natural source which

is unsustainablePlastic bags take up to 500 years to decay

Paper bags could be use but easily get wet and have to be transportedi.e., in a car

An alternative is a organically sourced, fair traded hemp or cotton bag

but if you have heavy shopping it still as to be transported by a car.

    IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE?

The winner will be the team whose bridge supports theweight (200 grams) for 5 minutes with the least amount

of materials used for the bridge.

In your groups you have 30 minutes to research intobridge design using the website

    PACKAGING How can packaging promote

    sustainable design?

Packaging is necessary for many products. Its design, and the logos, trademarks and images can give important messages about the quality of

    the product.

Packaging is also seen as wasteful and logos and brand identity are dislikedby many as the symbols of large corporations.

You are to design packaging for 3 items which shows that you

have minimised the amount of packaging used to house the items

    IN YOUR GROUPS -

.You must be able to see the items inside of the packaging

.You must be able to see the brand and logo on the packaging

. You can use any materials that you want, particularly if they arerecyclable

LYNX (TRADEMARK)AND DARK TEMPTATION (BRAND) must bepresent on the packaging.

Incorporate the swirl logo into the packaging

Final presentation drawing must be drawn on a piece of A3 paper with thecut outs of the 3 items below displayed as though you were looking at the packaging

    from the front.

Question? What have all these designs got in common?

(here are my suggestions, you should be able to add more)

    22/25

    Two approaches here:

    1. You have 10 minutes to sketch some of your own ideasfor a product (see design sheet on next page)

    2. Collect a piece of A4 paper for each person in your team

    2. On each piece of paper you should sketch at least

four different ideas for your Alessi product.

Each pupil has to vote for the 4 they think is the best

and fulfils the criteria. (slide 2) (a little tick on each they choose is

    appropriate)

This approach shows that there are lots of ideas, its easy

to do and sharing ideas gives you more options.

    24/25

In your groups you must now:

Model all four ideas using card and scaling the object to a

    estimated correct size.

If the product is a potato peeler you can make a 2 dimensional

model ( 1 piece of card)

If your product is a kettle you will have to make a 3 dimensionalmodel (at least 2 pieces of card)

You will present the most accurate, well made and Alessi influenced

    prototype stating:

    what the product is

    how it works

the brandname given to the product
