by the crowds. Our congratulations go out to Emily Walden, who rode her Saddlebred to victory in the Burlington Spring Horse Show. Also, Caytlyn Jensen qualified at District to ride in poles and barrels in the state competition. Way to go girls! Elite celebrates your accomplishments and we look forward to many more. We are so thankful for all the parents and mentors who support us and help us in every way. It’s not too early to begin thinking about joining our team next season. Project club news

PHOTO FREZNY CLUB Photo Frenzy Club will have free workshops at the Extension Office on Wednesday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 25 from 6:30-8:00 pm. No regis-

tration is required. Our July 25 meeting will include a tutorial on Photoshop, in addition to the regular lesson. We will also be meeting out-doors on Wednesday, August 1 at the Environmental and Nature Center from 6:30-8:00 pm, to tour

the Nature Center and take outdoor photographs. Please bring a camera (not just a cell phone) to the August 1 meeting. Also, please email us at [email protected] on August 1 if the weather looks questionable, to see if the outdoor session is cancelled. All 4-H members ages 9-18 are welcome to join us, and parents are welcome to stay as well.

AEROSPACE CLUB We would like to thank the Cynthiana, KY EAA Chapter president, Gordon Davis, for not only being our May guest speaker, but also for inviting our club members to take part in their June Young Eagles Rally. Several members of our club took a free sightseeing airplane ride, and got to tour a military airplane and first responder vehicles that day as well. We normally meet the first Thursday of each month, but due to the Fourth of July holiday this month, we will not be meeting. We will be touring CVG Airport in July, though. Existing club members need to let us know by July 6 if you would like to go on the tour set for July 21. Our next regularly scheduled meeting will be Thursday, August 2 at the Environmental and Nature Center on Camp Ernst Road from 6:30-8:30 pm. We will be doing drone flying and several forms of rocketry, including model rockets with helicopter and glider recovery, and water bottle rockets. New members are welcome to attend our August 2 meeting. Email us at [email protected] with any questions.

KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP July is Berry Month. The supply of local strawber-ries may be winding down, but some should be available at the store. Blueberries are the next berry to be picked, with raspberries following close behind. Blackberries may not be ready locally until

August. A fun dessert to make is a flag cake. If this newsletter isn’t received in time for the Fourth of July, the cake still adds a nice note of patriotism at your next gathering. No exact rec-

ipe is required, although many exist online. A sheet cake, either in or out of a pan, forms the rectangular flag shape. The type of frosting is up to the baker. However, a cream cheese frosting would taste great with the berries. Real whipped cream is an-other option, too. Blueberries are used for the blue section, and raspberries and/or strawberries are used for the red stripes. More frosting or whipped cream is used for the white stripes; just squeeze the frosting/cream out of a pastry bag to allow for straighter and easier-to-create lines. Stars can also be piped out of a pastry bag onto the blueberries fitted with a star tip. If you don’t have a pastry bag decorating set, an inexpensive one should work just fine. It will be difficult to make an exact replica of the flag, unless the sheet cake is very large. In bak-eries, these are called a full sheet cake. Home cakes are more like a ¼ sheet cake. Most likely though, those getting ready to eat the eye-catching cake won’t be counting the stripes and stars!

WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB At our last meeting, we made plans for the dog show that is being held at the Boone County Fair on Saturday, August 11 at 11:00 am. We also had a booth at Pet Fest on June 24, selling toys and

bandanas so we would be able to donate the money made later in the year. In addition to selling items, we recruited new members and gave out information about 4-H. We hope you can join us at our next meeting on July 24 at the Boone County Fairgrounds, where we will be practicing for the

fair. We hope you can join us! For questions or more information about our club, please contact Robin Huddleston at 859-512-8505 or at [email protected].

4-H PLEDGE

I pledge… My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service,

My HEALTH to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

When you say the 4-H pledge you are saying that you want to grow in:

HEAD mentally, your knowledge and wisdom,

HEART spiritually, your concern for and understanding

of mankind,

HANDS socially, your skills and service to others,

HEALTH physically, your clean thoughts and sound body.

GUINEA PIG CLUB At our last meeting, we learned about grooming dif-ferent breeds of guinea pigs, nail care, and nutrition for our pets. We also made treat boxes filled with

healthy veggies for our pigs. Our next meeting will be July 3 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Extension Office. We will be having a “pot

luck” picnic for the guinea pigs and guinea pig rac-es! New members are always welcome! For ques-tions or more information, please contact Ben or Christie at [email protected].

EXTREME ENTOMOLOGY Our next meeting will be on July 17. We will be meeting a little later than normal; we will start at

8:30 pm and end at 9:30 pm. We will be meeting at the Nature Center off of Camp Ernst Road, across from the arboretum. We will be hanging up a large white sheet and pointing a black light at it to attract bugs. Please bring your kill jars or plastic containers with

lids if you would like to bring bugs home to pin. In the event of bad weather, please contact Fran Mar-tin at 859-468-4432. We may have relocate to the Extension Office. Contact [email protected] for additional information.

PAWS AND CLAWS CAT CLUB At our June meeting, we practiced how to show a cat at a cat show. We also reviewed true or false

cat facts. Our next meeting will be on July 11 at the Boone County Extension Office from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. We will play some cat games. Members voted to bring kitten supplies to that meeting for the Boone County Animal Shelter. These are supplies that the shelter needs: dry and canned

kitten food, non-clumping cat litter, old towels, and paper towels. New members are welcome to join us! For more information or questions, please contact Joan at [email protected].

John Hancock was the only member of the Continental Congress to formally sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The Fourth of July was not declared a federal holiday until 1938.

Three United States presidents died on the Fourth of July: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe.

Back in 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, 2.5 million new people lived in the US. Now, 242 years later, approximately 323 million people live here.

The now American-celebrated song, Yankee Doodle, was originally written by officers of the British army to make fun of backwoods Americans.

The Nathan’s hot dog eating contest began on Coney Island in 1916, apparently because of a disagreement among four immigrants over who was the most patriotic.

$600 million is spent on fireworks in one year in the US, and more than 14,000 displays are put on across the country.

Back in the 1770s, people celebrated the July holiday by eating turtle soup, poached salmon, green peas, and boiled potatoes.

Who is eligible to enter 4-H projects in the Boone County Fair? You must be an enrolled Boone County

4-H member as of June 1 of the current year to enter projects in the Boone County Fair. Watch the 4-H newsletter to see when 4-H fair passes will be available. You will need these passes to enter the fairgrounds free of charge and to

register your fair entries.

What 4-H projects may I enter in the fair? Eligible projects are ones made after the fair last year. The Boone County Fair catalog explains what categories and units you may enter. Check the overall 4-H rules as well as the rules for each specific division. If you need clarification, call 586-6101 to speak to a 4-H representative.

How do I enter my 4-H project in the Boone County Fair? Entries will be taken in the Lutes Floral Hall at the fairgrounds on Monday, August 6, from 11:00 am-4:00 pm (crops, fruits & vegetables, & honey are entered 2:00-7:00 pm—see fair catalog). No projects will be accepted after 4:00 pm.

How are my 4-H projects judged? In 4-H, we use the Danish System of judging. In this system, each exhibitor is recognized for his or her efforts and accomplishments. Each exhibit is considered in comparison with the ideal and is evaluated and awarded a ribbon as follows: Blue means excellent, Red means good, and White means

fair. Thus, each entry is accorded a rating based on how it compares to the ideal or standard, not in competition or comparison with other entries. After all individual ribbons are awarded, the individual

Comparison System is used to consider each blue ribbon entry in comparison with other blue ribbon entries. From that group, first, second, and third place winners are determined. Entries qualifying for State Fair will have a sticker displayed on their ribbon. Please note that State Fair rules determine what each county is allowed to bring as entries. You may contact the Extension Office at 586-6101 for more details. Please be aware that some categories are county level only and do not advance to the State Fair.

Page 10: 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT NEWSLETTERboone.ca.uky.edu/files/july_18_4-h_news_for_web.pdfCooperative Extension Service Boone County 6028 Camp Ernst Rd P.O. Box 876 Burlington, KY 41005–0876

What happens with the 4-H projects after they are judged? Once items are judged, they will be arranged in a display. All entries will remain on display in Cloverville during the fair week.

When do I get my 4-H projects back? All items, except those selected to go to the State Fair, must be picked up in Cloverville located in the Lutes Floral Hall on Sunday, August 12, from 2:00-4:00 pm. If you cannot pick up your project on that day, ask a friend or relative to do so for you. Projects not picked will be taken to the Extension Office and held until September 28; they will be discarded after that date.

My 4-H project is going to the State Fair...what do I need to do? Nothing really, unless you have a food item. You should prepare a duplicate food item and bring it to Cloverville at the fairgrounds on Sunday, August 12 by 3:00 pm. Those items and all the other State Fair bound entries will be boxed up by 4-H staff and taken to Louisville. Your entry may be required to have additional paperwork. If you are unsure, please check with Paul Adkins to make sure 4-H has everything

Your entry may be required to have additional paperwork. If you are unsure, please check with Paul Adkins to make sure 4-H has everything necessary for your project. Please be aware that projects can be damaged or stolen during the state fair.

When will I get my State Fair items back? State Fair projects should be available for pick up at the Extension Office on Thursday, August 30. Office hours are from 8:00 am-5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Items will be held until September 28. After that date, they will be discarded.

How do I collect my prize premiums? Prizes receiving first, second, or third place are

awarded money. If you have prize money coming, you may collect your check from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 13, at the

Lents Building/Fair office, the small green building straight back from the front gates. After Sunday, checks may be collected at the Extension Office.
